Students say ICE presence in Marlborough is hurting school community By Leighah Beausoleil Assistant Editor MARLBOROUGH – One morning, Marlborough High School junior Maggie Morrissey awoke at 5 a.m. to pounding and yelling outside her window. It was the sound of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents raiding her neighbors home, she told the School Committee on Feb. 10 as the junior representative of the Student Advisory Committee. “They were masked and armed, but were wearing no identifiable uniform and were driving unmarked cars,” Morrissey said. Four of her neighbor’s employees had gone to a gas station that morning before heading to his house to retrieve materials for a job. Morrissey reported that because the men had been speaking Spanish at the gas station, they caught the attention of nearby agents. “The unmarked ICE vehicles then followed these men to my street, where they were violently detained. All four of those men were legally in this country, but did not have the physical papers physically on them to show, so they were taken away to a detention center,” Morrissey told the School Committee. According to Morrissey, her neighbor’s two young sons also witnessed the incident, then had to go to school after having ICE agents in their bedroom just that morning. What Morrissey wanted the School Committee to understand, she said, was this wasn’t an isolated ICE | 4

Once, at Hudson High School, the duo was visiting a classroom when Murf saw his presence was needed. “We were just visiting a classroom and a student was sitting on the floor, and Murf went and sat next to her,” Crogan told the Community Advocate. “The student just started crying, she said she had no idea why. She said, ‘I guess I just needed Murf right now.’” While at a conference of school resource officers several years ago, Crogan saw another
