Girl Scout troop gets sign approved for turtle crossing

MARLBOROUGH – Like the rest of the city, Sara Belisle can’t wait to move into the “new” Marlborough Public Library once the construction project wraps up later this spring. In her office are plans for the interior, from where the shelves will be located to the color of the carpets. Just down the street, work continues on the library building. As of March 1, the main staircase had been installed, the drywall on the second floor was almost done, and the exterior glass walls had been delivered and are being installed. HUDSON — Girl Scout Troop 64875 received approval from the Select Board on March 13 to install a sign on White Pond Road that warns drivers to slow down for turtles and wildlife in the area. The Select Board voted 4-0 to install a sign on the road. A letter written by the troop to the board said, “We have noticed that turtles have been killed on the roads by cars. We feel upset and heartbroken that this is happening.” The troop believes turtles are important to the ecosystem and thought that a sign may help them cross more safely if people are aware of the wildlife in the area. The sign installation is also a community service project that would help the troop earn its first high honor in the Girl Scouts, the Bronze Award. Several members of the troop, Stella Carrara, Arianna Maggio, Abby Beit, Emeline Garry and Mae Garry were able to go to the meeting and explain their request. Their troop member Ella Westley was also a part of the project, but she could not attend. After the meeting, they relayed a story about

City Council approves midyear budget transfers By Maureen Sullivan Assistant Editor MARLBOROUGH – The City Council formally approved several measures during its meeting on March 13. More than $1.6 million in midyear budget transfers were approved. Requests included $117,400.00 for four police officer retire-
ments; $41,700 for one firefighter retirement; $235,000 for anticipated contractual negotiations; $730,500 to cover various Department of Public Works expenses, including pump repairs, building maintenance and repair and an increase in costs for chemicals for water treatment; and $156,803 to offset Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School’s amended
