Marlborough Hudson An edition of the Community Advocate
New 14-house development planned in Hudson By Paul Hopkins Contributing Writer HUDSON – The Hudson Planning Board and abutters to a proposed 14-lot housing development had their first public look at the plans July 1. Planning Board Chair Robert D’Amelio promised a thorough process that could require several hearings. The development would employ Hudson’s Open Space Residential Development (OSRD) zoning bylaw for the first time since its adoption at Town Meeting in May 2007. The bylaw allows so-called “cluster housing” with remaining open space to be conveyed to the town in perpetuity. In this case, clustering homes would keep the footprints farther from the Assabet River. The 11.3-acre area is now mostly wooded land between Field Stream Lane, Kattail Road, and the Assabet River. About 6.8 acres would be preserved for open space, and it is expected that land would be conveyed to Hudson. Gerald Sarno, principal of Quality Crafted Residences based in Hudson, said all the homes would be custom-built to buyers’ specifications. “Like everything we do, we hope to increase the value of neighboring homes,” he told the Planning Board. Sarno said the firm’s focus is on quality construction and preservation, right down to keeping shade trees that can lower a home’s cooling costs in the summer. Nearly 25 others, including abutters, were in attendance and had questions concerning the status of a new road, which would be privately owned and maintained, and water runoff. 14 Houses | 7

‘One of the most selfless people’ McNair named Commonwealth Heroine
By Shealagh Sullivan Reporter MARLBOROUGH – For Pamela McNair, work isn’t about getting recognition. She was named one of this year’s Commonwealth Heroines on June 26 – an award she said took her by surprise. “When it first happened, I was like, ‘Wait. No, me?’” McNair said. “It was one of those things where you felt like they must be talking about somebody else, because you never feel like you’re all that much different than everybody else.” She serves as the treasurer and Ward One chair of the Marlborough Democratic City Committee, is a member of the Marlborough Lions Club, and is the founder of One Marlborough and Indivisible Marlborough. “Pam is one of the most selfless people that I know. She does everything for everyone at the drop of a hat, and she’s made an impact on so many different community organizations,” said state Rep. Danielle Gregoire.
