City Council approves MBTA zoning district By Maureen Sullivan Assistant Editor MARLBOROUGH – The city now has an MBTA multifamily overlay district. On Monday, Oct. 7, the City Council approved an amendment to Chapter 650 to add the new district, designed to encourage the development of more multifamily housing. Following a positive recommendation from the Planning Board, the council, led by Councilor Kate Robey, capped more than a year’s worth of work with a unanimous “yes” vote. “Well done, Councilor Robey,” said Council President Michael Ossing. The city will submit plans for the district to the state, per MBTA requirements. The proposed overlay district would be divided into three subdistricts — Royal Crest/ Briarwood, off Hosmer Street; Lincoln/Mechanic, adjacent to downtown; and Simarano, off Boston Post Road West. The units at Royal Crest and Briarwood were built in the 1970s. Simarano — the Green District — is under construction. Phase 1 (The Burrow – 235 units) and phase 2 (The Lodge) are completed; phases 3 and 4 have been approved by the city. The next two phases would add 475 dwelling units and nearly 700 parking spaces to the site. The site at Lincoln/Mechanic — Alta Marlborough — is also under construction. The site will include 276 dwelling units and 448 parking spaces. MBTA | 9

Horn sisters power Marlborough’s field hockey team By Evan Walsh Reporter MARLBOROUGH – Two sisters. Two hat tricks. One match. In a 9-0 win against South High Community School on Sept. 24, the Horn sisters lit up the stat sheet. Maggie — a senior captain on Marlborough High School’s field hockey team — scored three goals, and her sophomore sister Kacie matched her tally later in the contest. “It was really fun. I really wanted the hat trick, and I didn’t even realize we both got it at the time,” Kacie told the Community Advocate. The Horn sisters are at the heart of the Panthers’ success this season, helping the team to a 6-5-3 record at the time of publication. Both Maggie and Kacie have been playing field hockey since they were very young, starting their athletic journeys after their mom — who played the sport at Endicott College — enrolled them in clinics. From there, the duo started to play at Cape Ann Field Hockey Club in Worcester and continued to improve.
