City traps 111 rodents since May By Maureen Sullivan Assistant Editor MARLBOROUGH – There have been fewer sightings of rodents of late, but the city is still concerned. During the Board of Health meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 10, Board of Health Director Paul Dinwoodie provided an update on sightings and the bait box program. Since the program began in May, Dinwoodie reported that 111 rodents have been trapped and exterminated. “I wouldn’t say it’s a lot,” he said. The boxes, which are distributed on public spots throughout the city, are being monitored weekly; some boxes will be moved around depending on the need. He added that 29 sightings were reported in August — a decrease from the 38 sightings reported in May. One of the challenges in conducting the bait box program has been where to place them. When the program began, the city decided to place the boxes on public property. Officials soon began to reach out to private property owners. According to Ryan Egan, chief of staff in the mayor’s office, “In order to more effectively and creatively mitigate the rodent issue throughout the city, we began approaching private property owners in affected areas Rodents | 4
Hudson Recreation celebrates the Dogs Days of Centennial By Sarah Freedman Contributing Writer HUDSON – Centennial Beach went to the dogs on Sept. 19 as the Hudson Division of Recreation held the Dog Days of Centennial. The event supported the proposed dog park at Sauta Fields. Those in attendance were given a sneak peek at the new dog park design and were able to give input on the draft for policies that will be enforced at the park. Music was provided by Brian Chaffee, who sang a set that included “Rainbow Connection” and “Fast Car.” Addressing the attendees, Recreation Director Steven Santos credited Tiffany Newton, the recreation program coordinator, and Dan Hannon, the assistant director, for their work in making the event happen. As the dog park has been a project that has been years in the making, he said, “We’re really excited about where we are in the project right now.” If everything goes as planned, Santos said that construction could begin by the summer or fall of 2025. He also thanked the vendors and Kith and Kin,
