Uncovering Hidden Epicurean Delights THE COMMITTED PIG (MANASQUAN)      Life Is Too Short to Not Try This … Welcome to Delicious! After a busy Saturday of running around, my fellow FoodSpy and I were in search of a high quality (life is too short to eat crap), low maintenance (jeans and flip-flop mode) meal along the Jersey Shore. For months I’ve been hearing of a place called The Committed Pig that started at the beach, and had grown to a couple of locations someplace up north – so I whipped out my ubiquitous cell phone, spoke to my digital assistant, and voila!.. There she was! Cool logo, mouthwatering pictures and an address. Another short conversation with the GPS and off we were to Main Street in Manasquan. En route, scrolling down the pages (at the red lights of course), we saw a mostly burger and grilled cheese menu. So the initial euphoria subsided as we are not normally Saturday Night “burger people” - hey, the FoodSpy has a reputation to maintain - and in fact, my companion hadn’t had a restaurant burger in “years”, being a mostly healthy “salad and fish person”. But nonetheless, after some tennis-match banter, we stayed our course and stuck with our initial intuition. And as the kids say (or text), “OMG” – what a complete find The Pig was! We entered into a semi-dark, casual, almost college-like beachy dining room with a dozen or so tables, where patrons were smiling, busy working on protein-centric dishes and conversation. A closer look at the menu stated the burger base was a blend of hanger steak, short rib and brisket (a custom blend by Pat LaFrieda, a legendry popular local butcher). Our curiosity was piqued, and then with a quick glance at the adjacent tables already served, we were quickly mouth-watered and were anxious to

read/eat on! After a quick conversation with our knowledgeable and friendly server, explaining it was our first time, she was almost excited for us to experience The Pig. The creative concoctions on the menu were inspiring and we gambled and went with the Baked Brie Burger (creamy brie, bacon and fig) and The Good Morning Burger (pork roll, egg and imported gruyere cheese) both with a choice of fries, kettle, waffle or sweet potato (with a salad option for the weak at heart). As dishes flew by, we second-guessed our selections with woulda, coulda and shoulda’s and eyed the Pig Fries appetizer (waffle fries with mornay sauce, bacon and gravy). But when our plates arrived, we came full circle. After letting the smells fill the air above our table, we had to decide how to attack the burger with manners or without. Bite one… eyebrows clenched and eyes squinted – WOW. Literally the Best Burger Ever? (And I’ve had dabbled on some of the best around the world). Understanding the gravity of what I just wrote, I sense your skepticism – but we were told this is not far from the common first reaction people have after they take their first bite. The menu has something for everyone – here’s a taste. If you want to live dangerously, one of the menu’s most decadent items, the Burgernut is two burgers and American cheese, sandwiched between slices of a glazed doughnut - the burgers’ salty juiciness playing flirtatiously off the doughnut’s sticky sweetness is debauchery. Also of note is the Jalapeno Popper with cheddar jack, tempura peppers and cream cheese – crazy! Another major part of the menu consists of gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. We honed in on the garlic avocado

with sun dried pesto, muenster cheese grilled in garlic butter and The Croque Madame with sliced ham, fontina, gruyre and white cheddar cheeses grilled on sourdough, topped with a fried egg and mornay sauce. Also on the menu page are crazy colorful fish tacos with battered cod, purple slaw, pico de gallo, chives and corn pudding. The smooth three cheese mac & cheese served with bacon and collard greens were a great entrée or side, or better yet, on a burger! The piece-de-resistance is the 20 Dollar Burger which is 1 pound of chopped meat, American cheese, BLT with onions, mayo, ketchup and mustard (or any combinations) served on a fresh brioche bun. Beyond the burgers is all other kinds of awesome, all day breakfast with options like creative omelets, bacon and eggs and oversized gourmet pork roll sandwiches (with toppings like imported cheeses and tempura avocado) as well as cookie dough pancakes and Nutella stuffed French toast. The place is JUST as popular in the morning, so the take away here is I can’t wait to go back for breakfast. The atmosphere is always casual, friendly and un-pretentious. This BYO has three locations; Main Street in Manasquan, Springfield Avenue in Summit and “on the square” on Park Place in Morristown. So go hungry, forget calories and open your taste buds to Jerry Rutunno’s Committed Pig.

The MONMOUTH COUNTY SPCA 23rd Annual Spring Dog Walk & Pet Fair Raises Over $136,000 | Proceeds to Benefit the Homeless Animals of Monmouth County Photos: Kim Levin Photography

The Monmouth County SPCA celebrated 23 Years of Paws Walking for a Cause at its Annual Spring Dog Walk & Pet Fair at Brookdale Community College. The event, held in conjunction with corporate partner Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, was a huge success for the organization, raising $136,000 for the thousands of homeless animals that pass through the shelter every year. Over 2,000 people and their pets convened on the Brookdale Campus to enjoy the festivities and support the mission of the MCSPCA. The MCSPCA welcomed back Senator Raymond Lesniak to discuss his important work in animal welfare for New Jersey. Guests enjoyed a variety of gourmet food vendors including Alternative Plate, Max’s Hot Dogs and the Empanada Monster as well as treats from Hinlickity’s Ice Cream Truck, Café Diem and Northeast Kettle Corn. Activities included live demonstrations from the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, Dog Agility through the Jersey Shore Agility Group (JAG), an Alumni Parade for dogs that were previously adopted from the shelter plus a Cutest Tricks Contest, which was judged by several of the special attendees. Over 100 vendors displayed their unique products, with many donating 10% of their sales back to the shelter. One lucky Oakhurst resident took nearly $10,000 home through the 50/50 Raffle but luckiest of all were the 10 dogs that found their forever homes at the event! The MCSPCA’s newest and most popular destination was the new “Puppy Pen”, complete with a live Facebook video stream, which generated a great deal of attention but more importantly lead to several adoptions!

They glow as they tell the stories of the families they have had the opportunity to bless. Kick Cancer Overboard has sent families to sea with the intent to create memories, memorialize a loved one, take a break from the battle, to celebrate, to honeymoon and to just have the rest and relaxation that a cancer diagnosis can quickly steal. Tom says it best. “We can't change their journey... but we can at least give them a break from it.” DonnaLyn's and Tom’s lives are full. They are blessed to have the opportunity of freedom that comes along with being business owners. They work daily maintaining and growing their insurance business, fitting in what Tom calls “pencil possibilities” – numerous activities to be a part of every day, from sponsored events to fundraisers for Kick Cancer Overboard and other worthy causes, and networking socials, to name a few. They fill up their calendars with places to be and things to do, keeping every day different, always doing something new. As a couple, when they just want to be simply DonnaLyn and Tom, they can be found at their favorite Monmouth County dinner spots - Tommy’s Tap and Tavern in Sea Bright, Salt Creek Grill in Rumson or McCloone’s Rum Runner in Sea Bright. They are sure to reserve Friday nights for quiet time at home to walk their dogs – Hanna and Hank - or surround themselves with nature their backyard provides. But mostly they are out and about. Even their vacations are working vacations. Taking turns, they travel to exciting locations; Tom to teach pickle ball and DonnaLyn to teach yoga. On the rare occasion their vacations aren’t work-involved, they are filled with action and adventure. Their current focus is for this October where they will be joining in the MMy Ride for a Cure Across America cycling event. This event offers cyclists a way to raise funds and awareness for Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF). DonnaLyn and Tom will be jumping in to finish out the last 62 miles of the event. Tom says it’s not about the bucket list any more, it’s just the list now. It’s what will you do today to make a difference, not about what you will do before you die. They hope through their story they encourage others to do the same, that it gives a call to action. Indian Hill School Honors Wayne White In April, a grateful group of students, staff, and parents gathered for a surprise celebration for Groundsperson Wayne White, who is retiring after three decades of serving the Holmdel Schools. Distinguished guests included Assistant Principal Mike Ferrarese who welcomed Wayne, Freeholder Serena DiMaso, who proclaimed April 20, 2017, “Wayne White Day,” and Board of Education President Joseph Hammer among others. A beautiful coral Japanese maple tree from Holmdel Nurseries was planted near Indian Hill’s main entrance to honor Mr. White. During his nearly 30 years of dedicated service to the Holmdel District, Mr. White has not only taken excellent care of school grounds, he has also consistently gone well beyond the job description of groundskeeper in his contributions to the Holmdel schools and community. For example, HHS Runners, Jumpers and Throwers Club leader Ana Vander Woude spoke about Wayne’s volunteer service. She said, “Wayne has always been incredibly supportive to all of our student athletes especially the track and field athletes” She went on to explain that Wayne volunteers as an official at the HHS Track Meets. Indian Hill Parent Liaison Group President Debbie Brew spoke about all the assistance Wayne has provided to their group and gave several examples including building the volleyball courts the PLG gifted to the school this year. She then shared her favorite memory which took place during a staff appreciation event where Wayne came up on the stage during the students’ lunch time and it turned into a competition of cheers for different teachers and staff members. “When the famous Mr. White got up there the competition was over; these kids roared, screamed, clapped and cheered so loud…the principal had to come in to shush them! All he had to do was stand on that stage, raise his arms up and they went wild. You see, he is not only loved by the staff, the PLG and all who know him…but these kids - they love Mr. White!”

After seventeen years of ownership, Amit Patel and his family have moved to Florida and passed the guardianship of the health of local residents to Robert and Ann Marie Cioffi. With twenty-six years of experience, Rob worked for CVS and Boyt’s Pharmacy of Metuchen concurrently. He and his wife, Ann Marie, met while both attending the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston and he will run the pharmacy while she oversees the gift-shop portion of the store. “I made sure my patients would be in good hands, finding someone who shares my experience and philosophy in the pharmacy,” Patel says. “Everyone will like and trust Rob. He has a ton of experience and great credentials. As for me, I will most miss the people I have met working in this town all these years.” The couple promises to keep the warm and friendly atmosphere the pharmacy is known for while implementing some changes. Most notably, the look of the store will be updated and modernized. “We’ll be open during renovations, doing most of the work after hours,” Ann Marie shares. “We’re doing the cosmetic stuff as well as putting in an immunization station in the back for flu and pneumonia shots. Mostly we are bringing in a lot of great new product lines and expanding what we offer as a gift shop. We’re keeping everything that has been offered as a compounding pharmacy and becoming more of a place to shop as well.” With a Grand Opening celebration planned for this summer, the couple is excited to become part of the Colts Neck community. Parents to three children, Nina, 21, Daniella, 20, and Michael, 17, and one 10-year-old ShiPoo dog named Zoey, Rob and Ann Marie count family as their most important gift. “Family means everything to us,” Ann Marie says. “And now we want our family to become part of the Colts Neck family. You’ll see our kids working in the store, it truly is a family business. And if I can convince Rob, you may even see our dog Zoey.” Ann Marie stresses that dogs are welcome in the pharmacy with dog treats at the ready. Suggestions are also welcome, and the couple is open to thoughts on new product lines. Store hours are remaining the same, lottery will still be available, and a new delivery service will be implemented over the coming weeks along with an updated website. “If you know Rob, you love Rob,” Ann Marie says. “He has a great rapport with patients because he always goes the extra mile. He really cares. That’s probably the thing that is most important to us. We want people to feel they can come to us with anything they need because they know we care. Even if it’s just to have us deliver them a bottle of aspirin or a bottle of shampoo. We want to know what people think and how they feel. All questions are on the table, no holds barred.”

Colts Neck Senior Citizens at NBC Studios Fifty Colts Neck seniors had a delightful day in New York City in April at NBC Studios. The seniors saw where famous shows like SNL, NBC Nightly News and The Tonight Show take place and the very important control rooms. The group “put on their own show”, and actually were filmed pretending to be the host, guest, announcer, camera crew and control room crew – each senior received copies of their “show”. Family Promise Of Monmouth County Honors Lieutenant Governor Guadagno Family Promise of Monmouth County celebrated its annual fundraising dinner, The Promise of Spring, at Jumping Brook Country Club with great success. This year, the organization proudly presented the 2017 Hope Award to Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno who has shown outstanding leadership in New Jersey. Her dedication resonates on so many levels as she serves as a positive role model not just in the state of New Jersey, but throughout the country. Her long-standing commitment to supporting families in need aligns with Family Promise’s mission. As a military mom, former prosecutor and the Garden State’s first Lieutenant Governor, Kim has been fighting for a better New Jersey by creating a better, more affordable state for families and businesses, and has been bringing relief and volunteer coordinated efforts together to assist Monmouth County families during times of disaster as the overseer of the Governor’s Office of Volunteerism and Community Service. Wounded Warrior Receives Trained Service Dog with Aid from Anonymous Monmouth County Family Thanks to the generous support of an anonymous donor in New Jersey, the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, II Memorial Fund was instrumental in providing a specially trained service dog named Scout to wounded warrior Justin to help him move forward with his life after suffering a traumatic brain injury. “This donation is possible thanks to the generous support we received from a very caring family in Monmouth County, who wish to remain anonymous,” said Marion Zilinski, co-founder of the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, II Memorial Fund. “We wish Scout and Justin success, health and much happiness together,” Marion said. “The continued support of the public is critical to the continuance of our success in aiding our wounded warriors. The Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski Memorial Fund provides care and support for those serving our country and their families. The SGT. DENNY PROJECT has sponsored 43 service dogs to date, costing approximately $15,000 per dog. The program is named for SGT. DENNY, a two-year-old German shepherd who was stationed in Afghanistan with his handler. For those returning home from combat, the transition back into society can be overwhelming. The hyper-vigilance and hyper-reactivity to situations, sensations, sounds and smells that kept them alive in the war zone often continues despite the peace of civilian life. Service dogs are trained to help wounded warriors with many of the fight or flight reactions and health issues they face upon returning home from combat. The Colts Neck Lions Club hosted its twelfth annual Wine Tasting and Kentucky Derby Day on May 6, 2017 at Bucks Mill Recreation Center in Colts Neck. The muchanticipated event welcomed 225 guests, which included members of the Lions Club, their families and members of the community. Upon entry to the event, everyone received a complimentary Lions Club wine glass. Once inside they were able to sample a large variety of wines, beer and bourbon, and were encouraged to ask the vendors questions about their products. A horse shoe throwing contest as well as the traditional hat contest was held and winners were chosen. A Silent Auction of items donated by local businesses and individuals offered guests the opportunity to win a gift. As they leisurely sampled the wines and socialized with friends, guests paused to watch the simulcast of the

We are currently looking for donations for this playground project.” President Lotano thanked everyone who attended and those who participated in this enjoyable, worthy event. “We at the Colts Neck Lions Club feel that this was the most successful event held over the past several years,” he shared. MONMOUTH PARK CHARITY FUND CELEBRATES

Kentucky Derby Day The fourteenth annual Kentucky Derby Day celebration sponsored by Monmouth Park Charity Fund was held on May 6, 2017 in the outdoor garden of the Blu Grotto Ristorante located at Monmouth Park Racetrack. Tickets to this highlyanticipated event sold out two weeks prior to the actual event. In attendance were 370 guests, which included members of the military. Longtime supporter of the Monmouth Park Charity Fund Ray Catena was the Event Sponsor. Event Chair Marilyn Lloyd, CoChair Maria Tanzola, and an amazing committee of 25 people presented a special evening that included simulcasting of the Kentucky Derby with betting available; an open bar; and food specialties made by Blu Grotto’s Chef John Corona. A hat parade and contest was also held, as well as live, silent and chance auctions. Honorary Co-Chairs were Tom Donovan, president and publisher of the Asbury Park Press and Phil Villapiano, former linebacker for the Oakland Raiders. Donovan was MC for the live auction and helped to raise more than $27,000. This year’s honorees were OceanFirst Bank (accepted by Christopher Mayer); Valerie Montecalvo, owner and CEO of Bayshore Recycling Corporation; Anthony Abbatiello, a decorated war veteran of the Korean War and Harness Racing Hall of Famer; and The Tigger House Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to achieving a positive impact by reducing the death rate of heroin and opiate addiction, started by Rick and Lisa Stavola. “Lincroft Eats” Food Truck Fest will be a Feast of Food and Fun for All What better way to kick off Father’s Day weekend than to go to a Food Truck Fest? The Lincroft Village Green Association (LVGA) is hosting its 2nd Annual “Lincroft Eats” Food Truck Festival at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft. The fundraising event will be held Friday, June 16, 2017 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. and will have popular food trucks, craft vendors, live music, kids’ activities and a classic car show. Admission is $5 for adults and children 12 and under are free. The gourmet food truck line-up is sure to please palates of any age. Whether one craves a juicy burger, savory empanada, smoothie bowls, fresh seafood, specialty coffee and more, there is sure to be any foodies’ favorite on the menu. Check out the website to see the list of food trucks attending this year’s event. What’s a festival without live music? The LVGA has a great mix of musicians taking the stage this June. Opening the show at 3:00 p.m. will be NYC-based Martin Rivas, who has cut six albums and traveled the world sharing his modern folk sound on stages in the United States, the UK, Ireland, and continental Europe. Performing at 4:00 p.m. is local band Kat Phunk, a band of three teenage musicians, (including Lincroft’s very own Sean Moran on keyboard). New to the music scene is DUB, a bluegrass band made up of members of the medical community, who will be opening for the headliner band of the evening, Not-OnCall. The LVGA is thrilled that Not-On-Call band members are taking a break from their busy schedules as doctors and nurses for an encore appearance.

Another highlight of the event is the Classic Car Show. Classic car owners who want to show their “pride and joy” and vie for a trophy can find the registration form at www.lincroftvillagegreen.org. The participants in the Classic Car Show will vote on the classic cars in six classes, based on both the year built (1992 and prior) and the category of foreign or domestic made. Space is limited to 130 cars so early registration is encouraged. The LVGA appreciates the support of its generous trophy sponsors that are featured on its website. The LVGA is accepting applications for art and craft vendors and plans to again have a variety of craft tents fill the large, open area of the Brookdale campus. If you or someone you know make unique, hand-crafted items this is a perfect venue to sell your wares! Local business owners are also invited to have a Business Information Booth. This is an opportunity to showcase your business. The cost for a craft or business booth is $40; applications can be found on the website. Business sponsorships and proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit an irrigation and beautification project at the Lincroft Village Green, free community events at the Green, and the LVGA Community Scholarships. Business owners and community members who are interested in supporting the fundraising effort can provide sponsorship at levels starting at $50. Be sure to bring your beach chair and blankets and relax. No outside food or beverage is allowed; no coolers please. Brookdale is a smoke-free and alcohol-free college campus.

ou’ve probably watched one of their TV commercials many times, the familiar sound of “May the Schwartz be with you” followed by the smiling faces of Jon Schwartz and his brother Jim in front of a car. But what you may not know is the legacy of service and community involvement the Schwartz family, of Schwartz Mazda in Shrewsbury, has in Monmouth County. Jon and his son, Jay, run the business today but it was Jon’s grandfather who set the pace and gave an example for his family to follow while forever helping to shape the town of Red Bank.

After being discharged for his service in World War I, Maurice Schwartz opened the doors of his automotive store on Maple Avenue in Red Bank in 1919 selling trucks. His first priority was customer service and he was known to mail his customers survey letters with a penny attached, titled, "A Penny for Your Thoughts". Maurice became well known for asking the question, “Does service count?” And he used his commitment not only for his business, but for the community at large. In 1928, Maurice was one of the original members to sign the charter for the

Eastern Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce in Red Bank, he was also one of the earliest members of the Rotary Club of Red Bank and served as President in 1934. But in between, as the Great Depression hit and many businesses and banks collapsed, Maurice worked tirelessly to save the Red Bank community. The Merchants Trust of Red Bank was to close its doors, leaving many with no money and no way to eat or pay their bills. Maurice used his influence and gathered his friends and together they formed a Reopening Committee that saved the bank and their community at large. Today the bank is PNC. During this time Maurice added the Chrysler/Plymouth and International Trucks lines to his business. Although in his fifties, when World War II hit Maurice attempted to enlist. He wrote letter after letter until finally being commissioned by General Omar Bradley and served in the China-India area during the war. He used his vast automotive experience and oversaw the assembly and management of 101,000 vehicles used in battle. When he returned home he was anxious to help his fellow veterans ease their financial burdens and implemented

a car-buying agreement that allowed them to pay in weekly installments versus paying the total upfront. By this time the business had moved to West Front Street and now included his two sons, Arnold and Edward. It would remain at that location in Red Bank for more than 50 years. Arnold, a graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a veteran of World War II, followed in his father’s footsteps and served as President of the Rotary Club of Red Bank in 1983. His son, Jon, would go on to complete the same service as President in 2004 making the family one of only a handful of Rotarians with fatherson such legacies. Jon’s son, Jay, now serves as a fourth generation Rotarian and continues the family’s commitment to the Club motto "Service Above Self". Both Arnold’s sons, Jon and Jim, joined the family business in the 1970s after attending Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft and Syracuse University and Clemson University, respectively. In 1975 the Mazda brand was added, and soon after the brothers were making commercials with the new tagline, "May the

Schwartz be with you!" The business continued to grow, as did the philanthropic activity of the family, and in 2000 the company was moved to its present location in Shrewsbury. Jon’s son, Jay, has joined the family business and is now the Vice President after having worked as a janitor, mechanic, and sales associate. While attending Northeastern University, where he received a BS in accounting and finance, his father encouraged him to pursue other interests, perhaps something outside the automotive industry.

“I tried to get Jay to do something other than cars. This is not an easy business,” Jon shares. “But it’s in his blood, I guess. Jay brings a lot of new and exciting views and modern processes to our business. Fourth generation at the dealership, fourth generation at Rotary, it’s just the Schwartz way.” The past few years have offered the Schwartz family several challenges both professionally and personally. “In 2009 Chrysler faced corporate bankruptcy and they dropped our dealership,” Jon explains. “We never saw it coming because we were one of their top dealerships in the Northeast. But we weathered the storm. It wasn’t always easy, and we had some lean times, but we stayed true to what our father and grandfather taught us. We know service does matter and now things are better than ever. We have the best customers in the world and maybe that’s why we’ve received so many awards.” The family’s greatest heartache came a few years later when, in 2015, Jim lost his battle to cancer. Schwartz Mazda continues Jim’s legacy and philanthropic efforts, and supports all the same charities Jim did, as well as having established the James L. Schwartz Scholarship Fund at Christian Brothers Academy. “That’s still very raw,” Jon says. “Losing my brother was horrible. Especially for my mother, Ethel Schwartz, who recently passed herself. She has an interesting story too. She was the daughter of Jonas Tumen, the Monmouth County Prosecutor from 1930 -1933 and she was one of the founders of the KaBoom! fireworks display in Red Bank. I guess my family has been around a long time, and to think it all started with Maurice who only had a sixth-grade education. Education was so important to him – education, service, community and giving back. It’s what he taught us.”

Burry recently was awarded the President’s Award by the Monmouth-Ocean Development Council (MODC) at its 52nd Annual Silver Gull Awards Dinner on May 4, 2017 at Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club in Farmingdale. The President’s Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated leadership and commitment to the bi-county area, and has significantly contributed to the goals of MODC. Burry began her journey in public service as a member of the Matawan Borough Council. From 1997 to 2006 she served as a commtteewoman, Deputy Mayor and Mayor of Colts Neck Township. Lillian was elected to her first term on the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 2005, and has served as Director in 2008, 2010, 2014 and 2017. Freeholder Director Burry’s public service covers a wide array of positions on local, county and statewide boards. She is the Freeholder liaison to the Planning Board, Parks, Library System and Public Services. Lillian was appointed by Governors Corzine and Christie to the FMERPA and FMERA Boards, and is a strong advocate for farmland preservation.

Girl Scouts raise almost $65,000 dollars to support programs for girls in Monmouth and Ocean counties THE GIRL SCOUTS OF THE JERSEY SHORE raised $64,700 during its recent Girl Scout Golf Classic at Manasquan River Golf Club in Brielle. Money raised during the event will help create additional opportunities for girls to become involved in the Girl Scout organization.

ON MAY 11, 2017 - the members and guests of the Newcomers and Neighbors Club of Colts Neck, Holmdel and surrounding areas attended a spring luncheon at Buona Sera in Red Bank. It was the final and major event for the calendar year. Everyone enjoyed a five course lunch and a presentation by noted numerologist, author and speaker, Michael Fierro. The installation of the new 20172018 board also took place at the luncheon. The Newcomers and Neighbors Club was founded in 1971 by Colts Neck resident Louise Martorana. Louise held the first meetings in her kitchen, but meetings soon became quite popular, and the turnout was so large that they had to be moved to the Presbyterian Church. Since then, the meetings have been held in many different venues and are now held at the Conover Road Firehouse #2. Louise is still a member of the club and is thrilled to see how much it has developed since she created it 45 years ago! If you are interested in educational activities, reading and discussion groups, social activities which include partners and spouses, trips to theaters and museums, evening activities, cooking groups and above all, meeting and enjoying new people, this is the club for you. Nicole Stefano, Tom’s daughter, explains the surgery is no longer radical and normally is done through a noninvasive laparoscopic procedure. The family has been tested, and for various reasons, are unsuitable matches. Tom has always been a big proponent of organ donations and taught his children at young ages the importance of checking the box for donations on their licenses. The difficulty with kidney donations is that the donation must come from a living, healthy donor and there is a seven-to-ten year waiting list for a kidney.

THE COLTS NECK BUSINESS ASSOCIATION (CNBA) hosted its second Round Table meeting at Huddy’s Inn on April 24, 2017 – which is a quarterly event that invites Colts Neck business owners to share a voice in the business district. My friend Tony at Colts Neck Pizza got me thinking last month. He joked, “I have a complaint. I read your articles, but you never say…have a pizza.” As I ate my pizza that evening, I thought about what he said. It made a lot of sense. Divorce is stressful even in the more amicable splits. When the acrimony is extreme, stress levels can skyrocket. People deal differently with stress. Some lose weight. Others gain weight. Difficulty sleeping or concentrating are frequent side effects. Irritability, raw nerves, or depression can occur. The list of symptoms is a long one. Mental health and medical professionals often advise that taking care of yourself physically can help you cope with the emotional aspects of stress. In turn, taking care of your mental health can help with its physical manifestations. For instance, doing your best to adhere to a schedule often helps you cope with the uncertainty inherent in divorce. Resolve to

eat three meals a day at about the same time each day. That will help you to avoid binge eating or force you to eat, even a little. If you can discipline yourself to stay on schedule, you will very likely see positive results. Go to bed the same time every night. Turn off the television. If you need a sleep aid, do what I do. Pick up a book. It works every time. Calculate your bedtime so you can get at least seven hours per night. Regular exercise can help to burn nervous energy. You don’t have to run a marathon or climb a mountain. Start slowly. Walking is a good place to begin. Increase your exercise as you can. You’ll feel the difference almost immediately. Exercise can create the “good tired” that comes from physical activity and should replace the fatigue that comes with stress. Exercise will help you sleep better and longer. When you feel better physically, you’ll surely feel better mentally. And when you feel better mentally, you’ll reduce the likelihood that the

The Friends of the Monmouth County Park System, a nonprofit charitable organization, is committed to raising funds exclusively for the betterment of the Monmouth County Park System. On April 27, they held a fundraising event that both honored New Jersey State Senator Joseph M. Kyrillos, Jr., and celebrated the Monmouth County Park System’s Battery Lewis renovations. The wine and craft beer tasting event was held at historic Hartshorne Woods Park in Middletown and was attended by 140 guests. The Friends of the Monmouth County Park System noted that it was proud to honor Senator Joseph M. Kyrillos, Jr. at this event and to thank him for his tireless service and dedication on behalf of Monmouth County and its citizens since 1988. Many comments shared at the event by this organization had a common sentiment, “Senator Kyrillos is a lifelong Monmouth County resident who has devoted his career to public service for the betterment of his fellow Monmouth County citizens and the State of New Jersey and we thank him for his service.” Senator Kyrillos responded, “Monmouth County Parks Systems is amongst the finest in all of America. I am proud to be honored at the Friends of the Parks very first annual event.” This event also celebrated the restoration work done at Battery Lewis in Hartshorne Woods Park. Colts Neck Alum Alexandra Calderaro earns top MIT Scholarship Award from Penn State University ALEXANDRA CALDERARO OF COLTS NECK, graduating senior in the Penn State Smeal College of Business Supply Chain and Information Systems (SC&IS) major, has earned first place in the Supply Chain Excellence Award from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The MIT Supply Chain Excellence Award is granted to an outstanding graduating senior in supply chain at Penn State as a result of a partnership initiated between the two institutions in 2013. The award grants a tuition scholarship for the student’s use toward the MIT Supply Chain Management Master’s Degree Program. After completing a minimum of two years of work, Alex applies to MIT’s Masters Program in supply chain management. Danny Yunes, a Smeal supply chain alumnus and graduate of MIT’s Supply Chain Management Program, visited the Business Building to present the students with their awards. The MIT Supply Chain Management Program is a 10-month study program designed for early career professionals that includes coursework, a company-sponsored project, and international travel.

Jersey Shore Wine Festival

Join in for the 7th Annual Jersey Shore Wine Festival on June 10 and June 11, 2017 from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. at the BlueClaws First Energy Park in Lakewood, featuring approximately ten award-winning wineries from around the great state of New Jersey. Autism MVP Foundation Hosted 2nd Annual Fundraiser During Autism Awareness Month In April, The Autism MVP Foundation hosted its 2nd Annual Brewing Awareness

for Autism Fundraiser at Beach Haus Brewery in Belmar. The group had 180 people in attendance and raised more than $12,500 to fund initiatives for the non-profit, including a groundbreaking program with Monmouth University. The Foundation, now in its second year, has partnered with Monmouth University on a “train the trainer” program where leaders in the University’s School of Education work with teachers in local school districts to better help children on the autism spectrum. This type of formal training is a need that is not being widely met and is endorsed by the New Jersey Department of Education.

During the fundraiser, guests enjoyed a night out with food, drinks, raffles, silent auction, and live entertainment from the Paul Marino Band. The event was made possible by local sponsors Circle BMW, Circle Hyundai, 94.3 The Point, K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, and Barger & Gaines.

The Autism MVP Foundation is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by Keith Green of Little Silver, who, along with his wife Donna, have been inspired by their young son with autism and the educators and therapists who have helped make a difference in his life. The foundation is committed to honoring, recognizing and creating the most valuable professionals in the field.

The Garden State Wine Growers Association (GSWGA) picks two New Jersey wine lovers each year and sends them on an all-expense paid wine excursion. Game Over on Cross Farm Fields

As a resident of Holmdel for nearly 20 years, I have always been proud to be a part of the mass of volunteers that help make this town special. We are fortunate to have so many people who are willing to give up their time and talents to make Holmdel a great place to live and raise a family. One of these volunteers who is always willing to give his time and energy for others is Dennis Pavlik. I first met Dennis on the softball diamond as opposing coaches, and then on the basketball court. Dennis was always willing to lend his time to coach his two daughters and their peers. Often times I would find him coaching 3 or 4 teams per season between his two girls and their recreation and travel teams. While coaching from the opposite bench I admired the fact that he was always teaching the fundamentals and preaching hard work to the girls. He was especially good at giving words of encouragement to all of the girls, not just the most talented. The last few years we have found ourselves in the same dugout coaching travel softball together. I have witnessed firsthand his relentless dedication to the girls and families of our team; but this is only a microcosm of his dedication to the people of Holmdel and beyond. Besides his 10 years as a volunteer coach, Dennis also spent over 6 years on the Board of Education. I know firsthand how much time and energy are required for commitments like that. Boards and Executive Committee members of volunteer organizations are often thankless jobs. Yet Dennis continues to want to do more for his community. My guess is Dennis developed his desire to help others while spending the last 17 years serving and protecting the citizens of Bergen County as a

Many Holmdel taxpayers were thrilled earlier this year when the Township Committee, under the new leadership of Mayor Greg Buontempo, rescinded the $3.3 million bond ordinance to develop synthetic turf fields and related bleachers, fencing & light towers on the green acres of Cross Farm Park. Upon realization that the primary users of these fields are private multitown participant sports clubs, most on the Committee came to the conclusion that this was not a prudent expenditure for Holmdel. The underlying privately-funded sports clubs remain discontented with this decision and continue their pursuit of taxpayer funded synthetic turf fields with light towers. Holmdel taxpayers certainly should not be footing the bill for these so-called “non-profit” private clubs that generate tremendous revenues for their operators and constituents, pay trainers very well for their services, and carry large cash balances on their books. In one case, a club’s latest financials detail the following annual figures: $800k (Revenues); $315K (Training fees paid); $400k (Cash/Savings balance). The multi-town private sports clubs have been getting a near free-ride at Cross Farm for years on the Holmdel taxpayer’s dime. It’s time to stop subsidizing them. I have heard that there has been discussion of providing more turf fields at the high school. This is a much more appropriate location for these facilities where they can serve the needs of our students, as well as other town residents, and the private clubs as availability permits. My name is Dennis Pavlik and I am running for the Holmdel Township Committee in the June 6th Primary. I am a proud resident of Holmdel and I am passionate about my goals and my campaign; it’s simply about Holmdel. Simply Holmdel describes a new leadership path that is proactive, inclusive, transparent and straightforward. This will be the hallmark of my positive, issuebased campaign. Cutting taxes, preserving open space, providing intelligent recreation

planning and ensuring both public safety and competent leadership are but a sample of the objectives of my campaign that is simply about Holmdel. Working hard for Holmdel has been an important component of my leadership for many years. I am an 18- year resident, married and father of two daughters who attend Indian Hill School and Holmdel High School. I work hard every day to keep people safe as a Bergen County Police Sergeant. When I am not working, I spend most of my time as a Travel and Recreation Softball and Basketball Coach. I understand the value of the great outdoors and both passive and active recreation. I see firsthand through my job what can happen if our youth are not involved in organized recreational activities that encourage teamwork and responsibility. Through my coaching, I see the rewards in many different ways that not only benefit the children, but also the parents and families watching, volunteering and participating. It is important for our township to provide this and other inclusive programs for our children and for our families. I am a parishioner of St Catharine’s church and I understand that we all have a responsibility to others to always do the right thing. Public service is and has been my life. During my six years serving on Holmdel’s Board of Education, I managed a budget over $50,000,000, worked on complicated negotiations, curriculum development, community outreach and infrastructure. The school budget trumps the local municipal budget by a large measure and, with your vote on Primary day, I will put those skills to work on Day One. My goals include developing a plan that includes teamwork to support, communicate and collaborate with all residents. Additional goals include cutting taxes, improving our roads, ensuring public safety and providing competent leadership that puts you and your family first. I support the progress Holmdel saw through programs and communication which we became accustomed to the last 2 years and I want to get us back to that momentum! We need to work together and utilize the great resources we have right here in our town of Holmdel. I am excited and I look forward to moving the Holmdel Republican Party to a brighter future with a fresh start and great ideas -- like yours. Your views matter. Your concerns matter. YOU matter. FREEHOLDERS UNVEIL NEW COUNTY SEAL The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders unveiled a new seal for the County of Monmouth. “The updated design is in keeping with the intention of a previous freeholder board who, on March 9, 1798, ordered a seal with a “Plough and the letters Monmouth,” said Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry. “There can be little doubt that our forefathers, and mothers, knew that agriculture would always be part of our local economy. The new seal includes a historically accurate image of a moldboard plow with the words ‘County of Monmouth’ and ‘New Jersey’ encircling the border of the seal.” Commonly used in Monmouth County for centuries, the moldboard plow has a curved metal plate that turns over the earth from the furrow. Plows similar to the one depicted in the new seal are used to till the fields at Historic Longstreet Farm. “The green field and the brown furrows on the lower half of the new seal represent Monmouth County’s green spaces and active farmland,” said Freeholder Deputy Director John P. Curley. “As the plough is pushed through the soil it creates long trenches, or furrows, in the fertile soil; the green field is a nod to both locally grown crops and open space preservation.” “The tree line and blue sky represent the County’s longstanding commitment to land preservation for the purpose of protecting farmland, open space, and water resources, said Freeholder Thomas A. Arnone. “Monmouth County is a state and national leader in preservation with more than 15,000 acres of preserved farmland and more than 16,500 of county park lands.” “A great addition to the new seal is including the year in which the Monmouth County was carved out of the Province of East Jersey,” said Freeholder Serena DiMaso, Esq. “On March 7, 1683, the Provincial General Assembly created the counties of Monmouth, Bergen, Essex, and Middlesex. “Pushing the plow forward is a farmer,” said Freeholder Gary J. Rich, Sr. “Representing the hardworking spirit of the people of Monmouth County, the farmer works from sun up to sun down. Our workforce continues that tradition in the farm fields, offices, retail shops, and our many Made in Monmouth businesses.” The new seal will be incorporated in County communications and be placed on the County flag and County vehicles, signs and other identifiers as items are replaced or upgraded.

Middletown residents Anthony Raisley, AJ Poznanski, Kyle Coffee, Matthew King, and Matteo Guzman are members of Boy Scout Troop 246 and recently earned Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank of Eagle Scout for organizing and leading these five community service projects. “We are very proud of each Scout not just for his work but for choosing projects with a personal connection and a way for them to use their talents to make Middletown an even stronger community,” said Troop 246 Scoutmaster Bill Jenkins. Jenkins, also an Eagle Scout notes, “Very few of the 1 million plus Boy Scouts ever achieve this rank so we are especially proud to have five members of the troop earn this rank during this school year.” THE PROJECT DETAILS ARE AS FOLLOWS: · AJ Poznanski (MAST 2018), built a new garden bed for OASIS tlc, center for autistic adults on their working farm. · Anthony Raisley (Middletown HS South 2017), created an iPhone app for Poricy Park Nature Conservancy. · Kyle Coffee (Middletown HS South 2017), repaired and upgraded the handicap accessible trail at Poricy Park. · Matteo Guzman (BioTech HS 2017), built a butterfly garden for Little Chief Learning Station Preschool located at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. · Matthew King (Middletown HS South 2017), upgraded Internet access and livestream capabilities for Christ Church.

FRIENDS OF JJ HOSTED ANNUAL

Ladies Night Out

On April 28, 2017, Friends of JJ (FOJJ) held its 2nd Annual Ladies Night Out, Shop Sip Support Fundraiser at Colts Neck Fire House #2. Over 100 ladies enjoyed an evening that included dinner and wine compliments of Tastefully Yours Catering by Joyce and Court Liquors Eatontown, luxury raffles and over 20 vendors. Guests were thrilled to shop at unique vendors such as LuLaRoe, Touchstone Crystal and Rodan+Fields. A few lucky ladies went home with designer handbags and major league baseball tickets. Premiere sponsors included prominent local businesses: Alfano Renovation, Eatontown; Toybox, Colts Neck; and Visci & Associates, Marlboro. Co-Founder Brenna Messana, along with the help of members of Friends of JJ, made this event an incredible success. Friends of JJ is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded by Brenna and Chris Messana to honor the memory of their brother, Jerry “JJ” Messana. JJ passed away in 2014 from Neuroblastoma, a pediatric cancer that he battled for eight years at MSKCC. Friends of JJ brings smiles to pediatric patients in over 16 hospitals throughout New Jersey and New York. FOJJ enriches the lives of children during their hospital stay. This can be done by sending toys, supplying visits from princesses or superheroes, gift cards, pizza parties and much more. “I would like to thank our Friends of JJ sponsors, supporters and members that helped to make this night a huge success. With the proceeds of tonight’s event, we have planned a day at Children’s Specialized Hospital (May 8th) where we will distribute hundreds of toys from Disney Princesses and Superheroes who will visit each patient one on one. This will be an incredible and unforgettable day for the patients and their families,” noted Brenna Messana, Friends of JJ Executive Director. Bringing Healthy Southern California Cuisine to Monmouth County Amelia’s Kitchen, which opened in April, is a fun new restaurant located at the Grove West in Shrewsbury. Serving Baja California Cuisine in a family-friendly atmosphere, the vibe is relaxed and the flavors are a combination of Mexico meets California healthy. Using fresh seafood, meats, vegetables, and a little Asian infusion, the BYOB is a green restaurant locally sourcing its ingredients. Named for the owner’s daughter, there’s a lot of family history wrapped up in Arthur Gregory Schlossbach’s latest offering.

Marilyn Schlossbach also owns Langosta Lounge in Asbury Park, and she and their brother Richard are investors in Arthur’s Amelia’s Kitchen.

“My Uncle Barry moved from Pennsylvania to southern California in 1937 and went to work as a studio actor for Paramount Pictures. He was drafted into World War II and couldn’t find acting work when he got out. So he and his fifth wife, also named Amelia, opened a small Baja grill restaurant. It was a farm-to-table concept using local ingredients,” Schlossbach says. “My sister Marilyn and I have kept the family tradition going and opened our third Pop’s Garage Mexican Kitchen in 2010. But now that my daughter Amelia is old enough, she wants to return to Uncle Barry’s original healthier concept. So Amelia’s Kitchen is an elevated farm-to-table Baja grill where the Shrewsbury Pop’s Garage used to be.”

“Our Baja Seafood Stew is going to be big. We take shrimp, scallops, and whatever seafood is fresh and cook them in a tomato fish stock. Then we put it over saffron rice. It’s really good,” Schlossbach says. “We also make a Brussel sprout dish and a vegan sweet potato and black bean chili that are both outrageous. We also feature a Caesar salad. Most people don’t know the Caesar originated in Tijuana, Mexico in 1924.”

Pop’s Garage, located on the Asbury Park Boardwalk, infuses surf, art, and community and brings the laid-back culture of Sayulita, Mexico to Monmouth County restaurant-goers.

Keeping some of the Pop’s Garage dishes on the menu, such as burritos, quesadillas, and enchiladas, Amelia’s Kitchen incorporates the culture of the Pacific Coast Highway with a menu offering numerous salads and seafood choices. All dressings, salsas, and guacamole are made in-house daily and in-season produce is featured as much as possible.

Available for private parties or off-premise catering, Amelia’s Kitchen offers a full menu for take-out and seasonal outside seating. There are even balloons and special menus for the kids.
