“LABOR OF LOVE”

“Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” ~John 16:33

Minor - revdminor1945@gmail.com

A few months ago I was in a conversation with a well-known long-time business owner in our area. We got talking about summer jobs we had growing up. He made a comment that stuck with me: “In every job I had, I learned something that helped me down the road.”

For me, those summer jobs included such things as delivering newspapers, mowing lawns (my brothers and I had our own lawn mowing business), cleaning floors, selling ice-cream (I had my own ice-cream business), working in a kitchen, working in a paper mill and painting houses.

In each of my jobs I learned to be responsible, dependable and trustworthy. I discovered a love for people which has stayed with me to this day. Working develops character, self-discipline and self-confidence. All of these qualities served me well in over four decades of full time pastoral ministry. We are all familiar with the saying, “If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.” The church I retired from (fourteen years ago) gave us a week-end celebration. We could feel the love. Love for God is a circle. We love because God first loved us (I John 4:19). When we share God’s love with others, that love comes back to us and makes the circle complete.

It is love for God and people that has called me back to part-time pastoral service now for a second time. I feel the love every time I step into the pulpit of the church I am presently serving.

On this Labor Day weekend, I want to call attention to our labor for the Lord. In Proverbs 16:3 we read, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”

I want to remind us that our work for the Lord is never in vain (I Corinthians 15:58). In this way, our work is truly a labor of love (Colossians 3:23).

Prayer: Dear Lord, whatever we do, we will do it for Your glory. In Your strong name. Amen.

Bronson Healthcare Earns Forbes Best-in-State Employer Award for Fourth Consecutive Year

Bronson Healthcare, the largest employer and leading healthcare system in southwest Michigan, has once again been named to the Forbes list of America’s Best-In-State Employers. With over 9,300 employees and 1,700 medical staff members, the award highlights Bronson’s continued commitment to building a workplace that is supportive, inclusive and rewarding for all team members.

In Michigan, Bronson is the 8th highest ranking employer in the healthcare & social services category and ranked #39 overall across all employer categories and industries.

"We are truly honored to receive this recognition, and it is a direct reflection of the incredible people who make up the Bronson team,” said Cheryl Johnson, Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer, Bronson Healthcare. “This award belongs to every team member whose dedication, compassion and commitment to excellence have shaped Bronson into a healthcare employer of choice. We are deeply grateful for the culture we have built. One that supports each other, cares for our community and makes Bronson a place where people truly want to work.”

Bronson provides care across 70 locations, including four acute care hospitals in Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Paw Paw and South Haven. It is home to the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, children’s hospital and high-risk pregnancy and birthing center. Bronson’s commitment to its workforce includes comprehensive health, dental and vision coverage; generous paid time off; tuition reimbursement and robust career development programs; mental health and wellness resources; and inclusive workplace initiatives and employee recognition programs.

“Being named a Best-in-State Employer is a testament to the connection our own team members have to our mission, which is to advance the health of our communities,” said Bill Manns, President and CEO of Bronson Healthcare. “This recognition reflects the shared dedication our team has to creating a workplace where people feel valued, supported and empowered to grow – because when our employees thrive, so do our patients and communities.”

In addition to this Forbes recognition, Bronson is also ranked by Newsweek as one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Women (2023),by the National Association for Business Resources as one of the Top 101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For (2023-2025), and is a National Elite Winner (2024) and West Michigan Elite Winner (2025). Fall Means Football

I love the fall season for lots of reasons. But the thing I enjoy most about fall is football, watching it and playing it with my sons. Fall football reminds me of a time when I took a hard fall playing football. It was a chilly fall Saturday morning. I was 10 years old, playing organized tackle football. The team we were playing that day destroyed every other team they played. We were the next victims. When their players got off the bus, they seemed too big and strong to be playing in a league for 8-10 year olds. If I remember correctly, some of those kids had beards and prison tattoos. Just joking, but they were really big and strong. By the third quarter, the score was extremely lopsided but we kept trying. Then it happened. I was playing on the defensive line. The ball was snapped, and I ran across the line. I was chasing the running back and, out of nowhere, this 300 pound (at least he felt that big) player on the other team crushed me. I never saw him coming. I took a fall and was flat on my back in pain for what seemed like forever. I looked over to the sideline hoping my coach would come save me and help me up. He took his good old time walking onto the field. What happened next was so embarrassing.

Running on to the field in front of all the players and fans was my mom. I jumped to my feet fast and ran off the field, hoping no one saw my mom. Everyone did! On the sidelines, I yelled at my mom. “Why would you come into the field like that in front of everybody?” I’ll never forget what she said to me. “Honey, did you really think I could stay on the sidelines while you were suffering on the field? I had to do something.”

And this is the Gospel of Jesus Christ! When God our Father saw us suffering on the playing field of life, he just had to do something. He jumped into human flesh, blood, and bone so he could come onto the field with us, to suffer with us and for us. God loves us too much to stay on the safe sidelines. And because Jesus suffered, he is able to not only help but save those who are suffering. “For God so loved the world” that he ran on to the field for you.
