BUT
“As they were walking along the road, a man said to him ‘I will follow you wherever you go
Luke 9:57
By Rev Dan Minor
In Tolstoy’s novel War and Peace, the main character Pierre makes the statement, “Yes, Lord, I h ave s i n n e d , bu t I h ave s eve ra l ex c e l l e n t excuses!”
When we do not want to do something, we tend to make excuses An example is the stor y about an elementar y school teacher who asked one of her students why he did not complete his homewor k The boy responded “My dog ate my assignment!”
We may say things like, “Yes, I will do that, but or “I would but ” There is always a “Yes but ” In following Chr ist, excuses are not allowed Near the end of Luke’s account of the gospel (Luke 9:57-62), three men say to Jesus, “I will follow you w h e r eve r yo u g o B u t ” T h o s e wo u l d - b e disciples were not willing to count the cost One of them says he would follow Him, but must first bur y his father Jesus says to him, “Let the dead bur y the dead ” Another one is willing to follow but wishes first to say good-bye to his family Jesus’ response to him is “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God ”
The words of Jesus sound harsh until we look beneath the surface Jesus is not condemning the family After all, He created the family What Jesus was saying to them (and to us) is to count the cost of following Him Many are like the shopper who goes into a store and is asked, “May I help you find something?” The shopper responds, “No, I am just looking
The question is are we shopping for easy religion? Those ear ly disciples of Jesus knew the cost of following Him They paid the pr ice with their lives What Jesus wants from us is total commitment He wants our relationship with Him and His kingdom to take top pr ior ity in our lives
The holy season of Lent is a time of self-reflection, self-denial and rededication to our living Lord May it be so for us

Our Business is helping your business! A brief history....
The Community Shoppers Guide was founded and published in 1940 by Howard Bargwell. He did all the work by hand. The paper was distributed once a month to approximately 1000 Otsego residents for free. The paper changed ownership through the years, and was bought in 1945 by Grant “Mack” Bennett. He increased circulation into Plainwell and delivery to once a week, distributing to approximately 3500 residents. In 1970 computerized typesetting was offered and purchased to improve the publication. Circulation was increased to 8500 residents. In 1974, due to the high costs of the postal service, the Community Shoppers Guide started its own delivery system. In 1975 it relocated to the Downtown Otsego office that it is currently in now. Ron Bennett, Mack’s son, took over ownership in the early 1980s. Then, Ron’s son, Marty Bennett, took over in the early 2000s.
The Community Shoppers Guide is a three generation owned company Since 1945
