“LIFT HIGH THE CROSS”
“Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jer usalem” Luke 9:51
By Rev Dan Minor - revdm nor1945@gma l com
When I was pastor ing churches full time, I always b e g a n t h e s e a s o n o f L e n t by i nv i t i n g o u r congregation to sing the hymn, “Lift High the Cross ” I can still hear the majestic sounds of our church pipe organ as the choir processed down the center aisle, in their choir robes, leading the congregation in the singing of that great hymn Here are just a few tr uths we lear n from the cross of Chr ist
1 The Tremendous Courage of Jesus
In the words of the hymn wr iter “O young and fear less Prophet of ancient Galilee thy life is still a summons to ser ve humanity; to make our thoughts and actions less prone to please the crowd to stand with humble courage for tr uth with hear ts uncowed” – S Ralph Har low 1931
2 The Magnitude of God’s Love for Us “For God so loved the wor ld He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not per ish but have eter nal life” (John 3:16)
3 The Magnetic Power of Christ’s love Jesus said, “And I, if I be lifted up from the ear th, will draw all men unto me (John 12:32)
4 The Enormous Price Jesus was willing to pay for our Salvation “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, s o t h a t we m i g h t d i e t o s i n s a n d l i ve fo r r ighteousness” (I Peter 2:24) Let us, then, lift high the cross of Chr ist in our churches, our homes and in our hear ts
Prayer: Dear Lord, let us lift high the cross during this holy season and every season In Your strong name Amen
I love a good fishing story There was the time when a salmon got hooked and pulled my fishing pole off the bank and into the water Another time, I was fly fishing on the Dowagiac River from a drifting boat The boat hit the bottom and into the water I fell Yep, it was cold
“Follow me and I will make you fishers of people ” That’s what Jesus said in Matthew 4:19 He called Peter and Andrew, brothers who ran a fishing business, to leave the job of fishing for fish and join him in the mission of fishing for people If you have been “hooked” by the love of God in Jesus, then you have a mission that matters You are invited to partner with Jesus in doing for others what he has done for you You are called to a fishin’ mission, to help people find the Jesus who is lovingly looking and longing for them
Here are some of my favorite fishing stories Lou owns a printing business He is an excellent businessman That’s his job, but his mission is to fish for people So he leads an optional bible study for his employees during the lunch hour Charlie is retired and maybe even tired He is bored with his faith God nudges him to a fishin’ mission Charlie feels called to love on the homeless people in his community He starts to care for and support them, helping them to find Jesus Amy is a mom with the three kids under four years old She doesn’t get out much, but she feels called to fish for people with God’s love She hosts a group for young mothers called MUMs (moms uplifting moms) Moms are encouraged and refreshed by the grace of God
What’s your fishing story? How has the love of Jesus hooked you? And how are you fishing for others with the bait of Jesus’ love? You might have a career through which to earn a paycheck, but God has a calling through which you can build His kingdom “on earth as it is in heaven ” What a thrill!
See you Sunday! Pastor Lenny Luchetti
