Year 8 + 9
Activities Week 2014 14th-18th July
Activities Week 14th-18th July 2014—General Information This booklet will give you all the information you need to know about Activities Week 2014, an event held every year in July for pupils in year 8 and 9. There is a rich variety of activities at a range prices; there is something for everyone here. What to do: Read through the booklet carefully and decide which activities appeal to you. At the back of the booklet there is an application and consent form. In the boxes indicated put your top three activity choices in order of preference, then detach the form and hand into Mrs Jenkins in the general admin office by Friday March 7th 2014, please keep the booklet for your reference. Please be aware a first come first served basis does not operate. Only when all the forms are collected in do we allocate placements. Please remember that we have to consider all of your three choices as nearly 600 pupils require placements and many of the activities only cater for a small number of pupils, with some for only 10-15 pupils. Unfortunately these activity numbers are fixed and cannot respond to demand as deposits have to be paid and transport booked well in advance. You need to be flexible and be prepared to do any of your top three activities. Year 8 pupils must also be aware that priority is given to Year 9 pupils and that they will benefit from this when they are in year 9. If you are currently in year 9 please do not chose the activity you attended last year. If you are already signed up to either the Naples, Dali or Flanders trip you do not need this booklet and do not need to complete the forms at the back. This year you will see that we now have some activities that are a combination of other smaller activities. These are advertised at the end of the booklet and offer a mixed bag of activities and trips. These are called Combo activities and are numbered. When you select your ‘Combo’ choice you are choosing to attend all of the activities within that strand. It is also very important to be aware that when allocating placements no consideration can be made to friendship groups. Please be prepared to make a selection based upon what you personally want to do. Part of the beauty of Activities Week is meeting and mixing with new people across two year groups and many new friendships are formed during this week. Payments: Until all pupils are notified of the activity they have been allocated no payment is due. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY PAYMENT WITH THE APPLICATION FORMS. Pupils are made aware of their placements on the 23rd April via their tutors during registration and on the lists posted in the school foyer. The following week on Monday 28th April the payment window opens and payments can be made. The more expensive activities have a two month split payment plan with payments due by the dates indicated below. Split Payment Plan dates: 1st Payment: Thursday 1st May 2nd Payment: Thursday 5th June One-off Payment date: Thursday 5th June
Payment cont: How to pay for your child’s activity: When you child has been allocated a placement they will become part of the audience group for this activity and it will be linked to their WisePay account. To see this you need to login to your child’s account then view ‘Activities and Clubs’. Some prices advertised in this brochure are approximate prices, it will be here you see the finalised price for the activity and you can make your payment. Cash payments and cheques, payable to CVC with your child’s name, tutor group and activity on the back are also accepted. Those parents not on WisePay will receive a Parentmail notifying them payment is due and the required amount. Paper copies of letters will also be sent to parents without email. Please note a placement is not guaranteed until a payment has been made and all deposits are non-refundable. If payments are not made your child will not be signed up to an activity during Activities Week. If you have any issue with paying for your child’s placement please contact Mrs Jenkins, or one of the members of staff named below. FSM/Pupil premium: Pupils that qualify for Free School Meals or Pupil Premium can apply for financial assistance towards the cost of their activity. Please contact Mrs Stewart on 01223 262503 for further information. Exceptional Funding Support (EFS): This is a new funding option for pupils on FSM and low income families. Up to £100 can be spent on domestic trips. Please contact Alison Cronk on 01223 262503 if you would like further information. Arts Award: Some of the activities qualify for the year 8 Arts Award. The arts award is the arts world's equivalent of The Duke of Edinburgh Award and counts as a real qualification. With the Arts Award you focus on your creativity in any art form's you like: music, dance, art, craft and design, drama, photography and film, creative writing etc. To obtain the Bronze Award you need to take part in an activity, attend an event, research your arts hero and share your skills in some way. You collect evidence of these elements in a portfolio and then get it checked by one of the advisors in the school. Each department has a trained advisor that you can approach with the school’s Arts. The activities that qualify for this have an arts award logo on the page.

DanceWeek ‘Dance in activities week was great fun and was a good way of learning a number of dances in different styles such as street, jazz and contemporary. At the end we put on a big dance show that everyone came to see. The classes were exhausting but so much fun, we learnt loads of new moves and we got to meet people we might not have been friends with before, we all worked hard together and learnt some fantastic dance routines. The teachers were all really nice and were always there if someone was struggling. The show at the end was the best part, it was amazing to be able to show people all of our hard work and just showing what we could do was a brilliant feeling, and the amount of support we got from the audience was amazing. Dance week is definitely a great choice for activities week!’ Previous Dance Week pupil.

Trip to Naples
Year 8+9
See the wonders of Pompeii, Vesuvius, Capri and Herculaneum Whilst an intensive trip (due to the amount packed into our schedule!), it is a thoroughly enjoyable one. Pupils will visit and walk across a dormant volcanic crater, which still emits steam and sulphurous fumes, creating quite a stench! We also climb up the side of Mount Vesuvius to see the debris left from the last eruption in 1944 and are accompanied at the top by a mountain guide who tells us of the activity of the volcano. To help us understand the consequences of one of Vesuvius’ eruptions, we visit Pompeii and with a guide examine the ruins left from the infamous eruption of AD 79. We spend time exploring this site, studying the artefacts (including the plaster-casts of bodies) which archaeologists have discovered after years of excavation. To further understand this event, we visit Herculaneum to assess the differences between the experience of those living in Pompeii at the time, and those under 5kms away. To let off some steam (!) and see other areas, we catch a hydrofoil to the island of Capri to explore one of the lands of the rich and famous. This is a stunning, picturesque place where pupils are able to buy souvenirs, have lunch in a restaurant and take a chairlift to the top to experience the amazing views across the bay. Pupils also get the chance to learn how to make Italian gelato and sorbet, and of course eat it! They also have time on the beach to play games and paddle, and we host a quiz to test their general knowledge. Pupils often comment on the opportunity the trip provides to meet new friends across the year groups, and that these are established by the experiences they have on the trip. Pupils also return from the trip fascinated by the historical sights they have seen and the beauty of the Bay of Naples. Essential information: This trip has already launched but has 5 spaces remaining. Cost: £740 payable in instalments Please see Mrs Titchmarch in the Humanities office for an information pack if you are interested in this trip or contact her via the school email.
