With that optimism in mind, I have created a season of unique and stimulating musical events around the idea of Celebration! We will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of the CSO and the diversity of our country and the wonderful, inspirational stories we all have to share.

Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 (Choral)

As the Columbus Symphony enters its 70th year, we do so on the heels of one of the most difcult periods in our country’s history. It is likely we have all been changed permanently by COVID-19, but it has not been without the proverbial silver lining. While the Symphony worked tirelessly to be there for our community during this troubling time, we received constant conrmation and support from patrons like you that we were making a difference. And we gained national and local attention for our efforts to continue to serve central Ohio throughout the pandemic. Patronage and support from across the community lifted us up and fueled our passion to inspire and reignite a weary world. The Symphony knows our success is the direct result of people like you who were there with unwavering passion and support of our efforts. Today, we remain proud and fortunate to have your patronage.

As we come together throughout the season, we bring with us renewed and overwhelming faith and belief in the power of music to transcend adversity. We hope you will rejoin us as we redouble our efforts to serve all area residents, be there for our children, and provide the peace, understanding, and beauty that music adds to our lives as individuals and a community.

Thank you for all you have contributed to ensure the continuation of our mission. We look forward to seeing you back in the hall.

We end our season on a high note with Beethoven’s grand Symphony No. 9, featuring Beethoven’s setting of poet Friedrich Schiller’s “Ode to Joy,” celebrating the universal ideas of fellowship, humility, forgiveness, and optimism.

Dear friends of the Columbus Symphony,

Dear friends of the Columbus Symphony,

As I write this letter introducing our new Masterworks season, I am full of optimism and excitement as we move in a direction that allows us to live in a post-pandemic world. I am hopeful that soon we will be closer to each other, experiencing the power of live music once again!

With that optimism in mind, I have created a season of unique and stimulating musical events around the idea of Celebration! We will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of the CSO and the diversity of our country and the wonderful, inspirational stories we all have to share.

Our Russian Winter Festivals will be bold and spectacular. Two iconic works for orchestra— Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition—will be paired with the music of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto, in the hands of the brilliant Inon Barnatan.

The CSO Chorus will be featured in our first-ever performance of Bach’s St. John’s Passion and the season’s grand finale: Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

In our 2021–22 season we will focus on the Romantic period, exploring some of the most celebrated works for orchestra from that timeperiod. For the rst time, the CSO will perform Liszt’s monumental “Dante” Symphony, featuring iconic illustrations of Dante’s Divine Comedy by the French artist Gustave Doré.
