First of all, thank you for the extraordinary support you have shown in my inaugural season as Music Director of the Columbus Symphony. I will never forget the fantastic atmosphere during the performances of Carmina Burana and the euphoric reception of our Russian Winter Festival, to mention just a few!
Continuing the momentum of that energy and excitement, we would like to announce our 2016–17 lineup, which builds upon the innovative ideas we introduced last season—thematic festivals, enrichment programs, integrated experiences, and collaborations with other local cultural institutions.
In response to your enthusiastic comments, we have added one more Access Concert this season, for a total of three. Additionally, Preludes and Postludes will include more discussions, social events, and chamber music performed by CSO musicians.
Our Last Notes Festival will explore the final works of Tchaikovsky and Mozart, our Russian Winter Festival will feature some of your favorite Russian classics, and the exotic, multi-media East Meets West Festival will showcase the connections between different cultures. Not to mention the Beethoven Marathon and the Klezmer Celebration, which will certainly be both popular and unique!
There will also be so many amazing orchestral works and exciting, worldrenowned soloists (such as Gil Shaham), it will be hard to choose which ones to attend! In fact, think of our season as a chain of notto-be-missed events—unique, inspiring, and invigorating. Why not try to attend them all?
But if I have to choose one concert to highlight here, it would certainly be the performance of Mahler’s incomparable Third Symphony—a world unto itself that will no doubt change you once you experience it live! Nowhere else is the transformative power of music more evident than in this musical universe of passion, adoration of nature, and immense love. One cannot experience symphonic music fully until hearing a MAHLER SYMPHONY LIVE!
The fantastic musicians of the Columbus Symphony and I cannot wait to see you in our concert halls and share our passion for the music!
Yours, Rossen
Season 2016–2017
What’s happening at the
CSO!
Preludes
Each Masterworks performance will include a 30-minute, pre-concert dialogue with Maestro Milanov or WOSU’s Christopher Purdy regarding the works to be performed that evening. Each Prelude takes place in the theatre beginning at 7pm.
Postludes
Patrons are invited to stay after the concert and enjoy a variety of Postlude events following select performances. Postludes could include the performance of an additional, related work for a smaller ensemble, a post-performance discussion with Maestro Milanov and/or the featured guest soloist(s), dance demonstrations, or wine, beer, or dessert tastings. Each Postlude will complement that evening’s Masterworks program.
Access Concert Series
This innovative series is designed to introduce people with little or no experience in classical music to some of the most popular works in the orchestral repertoire. Led by the conductor of the related Masterworks programs of the week, each concert will examine one work, which will be taken apart with the help of the orchestra to illustrate important points and ideas. After intermission, the piece will be performed without interruption.
Festivals
The CSO will hold four festivals that combine music with art, knowledge, and thematically-related events. They include the Last Notes Festival (November 18 & 19), Russian Winter Festival I (January 6 & 7), Russian Winter Festival II (March 3 & 4), and East Meets West Festival (May 12 & 13) at the Ohio Theatre. Each festival program will be enhanced with a variety of educational and interactive offerings, enabling patrons to become immersed in each festival’s focus across multiple disciplines.
Friday Dress
Select Masterworks programs in 2016–17 will offer $20, general admission tickets to Friday morning rehearsals.
As part of each festival, the CSO and Columbus Museum of Art will collaborate in a series of afternoon lectures that pair chamber music performances by CSO musicians with works from the CMA art collection. The presentation will focus on specific periods in upcoming CSO Masterworks concerts and explore the common themes and aesthetic influences between music and visual art.
Subject Matter
On Tuesday of each festival week, The Ohio State University will host a free lecture given by a professor with expertise in the field the CSO will be exploring in upcoming concerts.
Soundbites
Discover the taste of music when four of Columbus’ top culinary masters create a unique dish inspired by a work featured on a CSO Masterworks program and add it to the menus of their outstanding local restaurants.

CHORAL MASTERPIECE
This passionate and spectacular piece touches every emotion, from drama to consolation, from stark terror to soothing beauty and an uplifting sense of spirituality. Although it is a sacred work, the deep theatricality that it shares with Verdi’s other creations has led to it being frequently described as “Verdi’s greatest opera.” To adequately convey the breadth of his vision, he called for the combined forces of full orchestra and chorus plus four solo vocalists.
