As we continue to look at ways to save you money, we have entered into an agreement with Volunteer Energy, an energy provider in Pickerington. Volunteer Energy has teamed up with First Energy Solutions
of Akron to sell electricity at a discount to Hilliard Chamber members. Eligible companies will pay from 6.35 cents to 7.29 cents per kilowatt-hour, which Volunteer estimates is 10 – 40% less than AEP charges most local businificant dollars. the recent recession has led to nesses. Board of directors happenings We would like to welcome Tom Baker, Baker & Associates Insurance Agency, to the Board of Directors, fulfilling the unexpired term of Tom Minturn. Tom has been an in volved Tom Baker member of the chamber as a volunteer, member of the Ambassador Committee, attendee at luncheons and business after hours, etc.
We look forward to having Tom on our board! The Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce has 12 board positions each with three-year terms. Christmas events in Olde Hilliar The Olde Hilliard Christmas celebration began with the annual tree-lighting ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 2 at the Historical Village at Weaver Park, located next to the Franklin County Fairgrounds. The Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce, Old Hilliard Civic Association, Franklin County Agricultural Society, Hilliard Arts Council, Northwest Franklin County Historical So-
ciety and Destination Hilliard in coordination with the City of Hilliard are inviting businesses and residents located in Old Hilliard to decorate their b usiness or home for the holiday season. Old Hilliard is defined as Norwich Street and Main Street from arch to arch. Get out those lights and yard decorations and get ready to show the world your spirit this
holiday season! The Holiday Lighting Contest runs through Thursday, Dec. 30. All entrants are asked to leave their holiday scenes and Lighting displays assembled for the enjoyment of the public until Dec. 30. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 15. Trolleys will take passengers down the streets to see the lights

on Dec.17 and 18. On Dec. 12, guests may ride in a horse drawn carriage for a small fee. Restaurants in Old Hilliard will feature specials. Hollyfest scholarship auction a success We had over 200 people attend the 28th Annual Hollyfest Scholarship Auction, which raised money to fund scholarships for the Hilliard students going on to further their education. The highlights included the students who have received the scholarships talking about the impact it has made, the attendees taking home a souvenir with their pictures from the photo booth, active bidding on silent and live auction items and the reverse raffle prize of $1,000. We also had some outstanding pieces of artwork donated by school students and community artists. The artists that we have in our area are amazing. We appreciate the support of the community by donating and bidding on the great items. Chair’s perspective
Sticking with your New Year’s resolutions in 2011 As 2010 wraps up, this is a great time to reflect on how your year went – both personally and professionally. Did you stick with your Ne w Year’s resolutions? If not, why? Take a candid look at your goals and whether you succeeded in meeting them. Taking inventory in your business is a must, but taking a yearly inventory of your goal progress is necessary as well. In reviewing our Chamber Mission and goals, we certainly made some great strides toward meeting or exceeding most of our objectives. We had two board retreats this year. We were able to come to a good consensus on what is most important for our Chamber to be a relevant and positive organization for our members. We added a new (and fantastic!) event – Taste of Hilliard & Business Expo. And we were able to continue to grow our important fundraiser – The Hollyfest Scholarship Foundation – thanks to your donations and your help. We, as a Chamber, had a positive year in membership, activities, and programs. We hope you were able to join us at man y events. If not, add a new resolution for 2011 to make it out more often.

This site also has planning pages to help you through your workday as well. The Fly Lady is all about taking HEATHER “baby steps” to get organized and this is really great advice. If KECK you weren’t born with that “organization” gene, then her advice can really help you have a better year. Check it out – all the information is free and helpful. Although the economy has been v ery difficult on all small business owners, and 2011 may not look any better, I hope you made the most of 2010 every day. Are you buying locally—especially this holiday season? 1. Significantly more money recirculates in the area. When you purchase at locally owned businesses rather than nationally owned, more money is kept in the community because locally-owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses, service providers and farms. Purchasing local helps grow other businesses as well as the Hilliard area taxbase. 2. Nonprofits receive greater support. Local business owners donate more
to local charities than non-local o wners. 3. Unique businesses create character and prosperity. The unique character of Hilliard is what brought us here and keeps us here. Success calls for two kinds of passion without a healthy attraction for business fundamentals, passion has only slightly more value than a dream. As the Texans say, it’s all hat and no cattle. This will be on the test: Success as a small b usiness owner requires two kinds of passion: The first is the love of what you want to do, as described above. This is like the way a mother loves her newborn baby, and it’s the easy kind. In fact, it’s too easy. The object of the second kind of small business passion is less adorable but not less important. This is passion for a profession that requires dedication to learn and practice management fundamentals and acceptance of a return-on-investment timeline that pushes the deferred gratification envelope. See, I told you it was less adorable. The closest kin to this kind of passion would be that which is required for parents to love their teenagers anyway, during those moments
when they don’t like them very much. It’s critical for a starry-e yed start-up to make the distinction between these two types of passion. Passion for what you sell won’t be enough when payables exceed receivables, making payroll (“Is it Friday again? Already?!”), when customers are the most difficult, when an employee becomes part of the problem, etc. These and a long list of other abiding small business challenges will require you to deliver on the management fundamentals you became good at because you had that other kind of passion - the kind that made you become a high-performing, professional business owner, not just someone who dreamed of being one. Over the years, as I have talked with budding entrepreneurs, it continues to amaze me ho w many have not conducted anything close to a prudent amount of research as they start their businesses. Indeed, they often act as if they must get their business going right now or they will just pop. This kind of impatience is dangerous. Doing my best to talk them down off the ledge, I walk the fine line between slowing them down a little and dousing the fire of their entrepreneurial passion with my tough love. Yes, passion is important. And when would-be small business owners get that far away look in their eyes at this impetuous stage of a start-up, they have plenty of passion for what the business does.
