Submitted by Parks Canada Known largely for its roadside attractions, diverse landscapes and highway history, Kootenay National Park is a land of contrasts waiting to be discovered. In the north end of the park, glacier clad peaks line the continental divide and snow lingers well after the Victoria Day long weekend. Kootenay’s contrasting grasslands in the south welcome warm weather and spring hiking earlier than anywhere else in the Rockies. Dog Lake Beginning from the McLeod Meadows Day Use Area, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife tracks as you walk along this 5.2 km (return, 40 m elevation gain) trail to a peaceful lake. Surrounded by forest, the shoreline of this shallow lake provides views of Mounts Daer and Harkin – two prominent peaks in the Mitchell Range. Juniper/Sinclair trail Warm up your hiking legs on the popular 6.2 km (return, elevation gain/loss 260m) Juniper/Sinclair trail. From the Radium Hot Springs pools follow the sidewalk towards the west gate. Stroll through Kootenay’s spectacular rock gateway before following the winding trail deep into Sinclair Canyon. At the bottom of the Canyon, feel Sinclair Creek’s cool breeze on your face and admire the lush Western Red Cedars. The trail then climbs to a series of overviews where you can look down on Highway 93 or across at the Bugaboo Mountains. Finish your hike with a relaxing dip in the hot springs. Redstreak Restoration Loop Stroll along a 1 km loop (5m elevation gain) through the recently opened meadows surrounding the Redstreak Campground. Learn about the role prescribed fire played in restoring this area for big horn sheep to graze. Keep your eyes open – if you are lucky you may just see some sheep grazing. Picnicking Bask in the spring sunshine with family and a picnic lunch at Kootenay River or Olive Lake Day Use Areas. Sit alongside the rambunctious Kootenay River and watch the sun glitter off snow capped mountains or enjoy an easy stroll beside Olive Lake and a picnic in an old campground. Biking Kootenay has four biking trails located midway through the park. These trails can be accessed from the Kootenay Crossing Warden Station, Crook’s Meadows group camping and McLeod Meadows Day Use Area. The valley is a mountain biking mecca By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Mountain biking is one of the most popular summer pastimes in the Columbia Valley. The valley is certainly one of the best places in B.C. for both cross country and downhill mountain biking. “We’re definitely one of the unfound gems in the mountain bike world,” said Bicycle Works store owner Byron Grey. This summer cyclists both local and from outside the valley can find their way onto trails more easily thanks to the new Trails of the Columbia Valley map. The map, the first of its kind, is produced by the Columbia Valley Cycling Society and is available free in local bike shops and tourism centres. The comprehensive map features all authorized riding areas in the valley from Fairmont Hot Springs to Nipika Mountain Resort, Radium Hot Springs to Panorama Mountain Resort. “It lets visitors have easy access to all the trails we have around the valley and to some of the popular backcountry routes,” said Mr. Grey. Cross country riders will get all the fun they want and more on the speedy, flowing trails in the Toby Benches area. Along the Johnson and Kloosifier, both maintained by the Columbia Valley Cycling Society, are world-class singletrack with plenty of natural technical features and jaw-dropping views of Toby Creek Canyon — beware of considerable exposure on some parts of these
trails. Nearby Nipika mountain resort (on Settler’s Road, just south of Kootenay National Park) offers more than 50 kilometers of gnarly cross country singletrack and an additional 50 kilometers of wide-open cross country ski trails that can be biked in the summer. Downhill mountain bikers will love the seven steep, rocky all-mountain trails in the Mt. Swansea area, which is also managed by the Columbia Valley Cycling Society. Panorama Mountain Resort has a great network of lift access downhill bike trails for those who want gravity-fueled fun without the lungbusting uphill work. In Radium aspiring tricksters can test their mettle in the small bumps and jumps of the Pump ‘n Jump park. Families can cruise on the Old Coach Trail from Radium to Dry Gulch. The Spirit Trail, which winds 15 to 20 kilometers from Fairmont to Canal
Flats along the the east side of Columbia Lake, is one of the most interesting and scenic rides in the valley. “It’s a great, fast, fun, flowy trail ride for mountain biker of all ages,” said Mr. Grey. The trail, which has some challenging climbs, is great for intermediate or advanced riders (good endurance needed) and offers breathtaking vistas of the lake and the Purcell mountains behind. It passes through the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s environmentally significant Lot 48 — look up as you ride and you may spot eagles sitting in their nests. You can ride out and back on the Spirit Trail or loop back on a different, higher trail, also with stellar views. Backcountry rides, such as the Brewer Creek trail, Delphine Creek and Paradise Ridge, are a great challenging option for those looking for something more adventurous.

Running with a view By Joshua Estabrooks Special to the Pioneer The Columbia Valley has long been known as a place to stretch your legs for a scenic hike, but did you know it is also a place you can take to the trails at higher speeds? Trail running is growing in popularity, and there is no better place to feel the wind in your hair and the ground beneath your cross trainers than right here. Local shoe outfitter (Crazy Soles) and running enthusiast, Beva Kirk, explained that there are a number of trails with varying degrees of difficulty in the immediate area that are perfect for the trail runner in all of us. “I really enjoy running in the Juniper Heights area and the Deja View section of the Old Coach Trail,” she said. Both routes are located in the Dry Gulch area, between Invermere and Radium, and are easily accessed off the highway. views in every direction. Local runner, Ron Verboom, enjoys the Old Coach Trail as well, but he said that the trails in and around the Redstreak Campground area, just inside Kootenay National Park from Radium Hot Springs, also offers some incredible running experiences. For those with a bit more ambition, the Mount Swansea area is a challenging place to run as well, with lots of vertical gain. It makes for a great training run, Ms. Kirk said, but is a much more difficult area for the casual runner. Any type of shoe works on the trails, but a trail running shoe would be perfect for the terrain in the valley. A good resource for trail running is the trail map recently produced by the local cycling club, as most biking trails also work well as running trails, said Ms. Kirk. There are also six local races in the valley that anyone with a more competitive spirit can take part in. The TREK (Trail Races East Koote10:20:54 AM nays) Series begins in the spring and includes

Something tasty just arrived in the valley Eagle Ranch Golf Resort recently opened its Rustica Steakhouse and those hankering for top-quality, 100 per cent Canadian Prime steaks can get their fill and more on Eagle Ranch’s renovated premises, which included a new, upgraded deck that seamlessly blends comfortable eating with fine dining. “You can really tell the difference in the quality and the flavour when using the high-quality Canadian beef,” said Eagle Ranch clubhouse manager Andrew Hickson. Rustica expects to draw people from the valley and beyond, based on the enormous success and popularity of its sister Rustica Steakhouse in Silvertip Resort in Canmore, which is currently the number one restaurant in Canmore according to TripAdvisor. “We procure the finest prime beef from the top one per cent of all beef processed in Canada,” said Mr. Hickson.“You won’t get a better piece of beef. It’s so tender we don’t use a steak knife. Our steaks are prepared with house-made seasoning and then finished under a 1500-degree Fahrenheit broiler.” The golf resort previously had a high-end a la carte restaurant but opted instead for a more unique dining establishment. “We’re excited, it’s a brand new concept in the valley. I think we’re the only ones in the Columbia Valley that have a specialty high-end steakhouse,” said Mr. Hickson.

Going to market By Joshua Estabrooks Pioneer Staff While playing and staying in the Columbia Valley, why not do some paying as well by checking out the various markets available to locals and visitors alike? There are a number of markets in the valley, from Edgewater to Fairmont Hot Springs, so depending on where it is you’re staying you should have access to one or more or all of the markets taking place this summer. In Invermere, the farmer’s market is the place to find local handcrafted items and edibles to suit any taste or budget. The market is an official farmer’s market, operating under a “make, bake or grow” philosophy, organizer Julia Oaks said. “We will have organic produce, homebaked pies bread and goodies, handcrafted jewelry, local art, iron work, homemade food products and a whole lot more.” The market is growing exponentially, Oaks said, as not only the number of vendor applications are on the rise but last year’s attendees were in the thousands. There are currently 50 spaces in the market, with some vendors setting up shop for the whole season and some operating on a rotation schedule. The market runs every Saturday from June 22nd to September 14th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. With regards to the rumours of the market changing locations this year, Ms. Oaks said that it will remain in its current location this year. Radium Hot Springs’ community market is also a good place to browse this summer, as vendors can sell homemade and manufactured products. Organizer Kara Cassidy said that products range from Tupperware and homemade scarves to baking, jellies, hot sauces from up to 32 vendors. Music on Main will accompany the markets this summer, with live musical entertainment echoing through the downtown core. The vendors are set up at the Radium Information Centre and will be out selling their wares every Friday night starting June 28th from 4-9 pm and on long weekends Saturdays from 4-9 pm until September 7th. “Our first event is this coming Saturday, May 18th,” Ms. Cassidy said. “We will be doing a market and live music to give our May long weekend guests and locals something to do in town.” The first market will run from 12-7 p.m. For more information contact Kara at Tourism Radium, kara@radiumhotsprings.com or call 250-347-9331. Heading a little farther afield to Edgewater, the valley’s oldest community market will be kicking off on July 6th and running until September 7th. People can sell anything, not just vegetables or baked goods. It could be crafts, dishes, anything. It’s more of a flea market,” said organizer Vi Wittman.
