RDEK remuneration sees much debate Columbia Valley Pioneer staff The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has approved hefty pay raises for its directors, but not before some spirited debate among members last week. The most passionate of the bunch was municipal director David Wilks (mayor of Sparwood), who reiterated several times that electoral area directors don’t get compensated enough for the many hours they dedicate to the job. “You (directors) go to countless meetings that no one ever sees . . . how many times have you had to give up family life when something happened and you had to go? It’s happened to me,” Wilks said, adding that area directors are not doing themselves any favours by thinking the increase is “too rich.’ How rich? The board approved increasing the stipend for electoral area directors to $60,000 for 2027, and increase it by the BC Consumer Price Index in 2028-2030. A comparison chart shows that their base remuneration per year is currently $33,252. A remuneration review panel recommended the stipend increase to $49,508 in 2027, but after debate the board approved the $60,000 amount. The board also approved increasing the municipal director stipend to $30,000 for 2027, compared to their current base remuneration of $15,506. The board chair stipend also goes up — $40,000 for 2027, compared to $22,914. The vice-chair currently makes $3,971, but that will jump to $10,000 for 2027. Alternate directors will get a pay raise of $500 per day in 2027. As far as travel allowance, the
board will amend it from $20 per hour to $0.25 per kilometre. Meal allowances will be updated to $30 for breakfast, $40 for lunch and $50 for dinner effective January 1, 2027. Municipal director Mike Gray (mayor of Radium) said electoral area directors do an extraordinary amount of work, noting he does a fraction of the work that they do. Electoral Area A director Thomas McDonald said it’s difficult to attract younger people to serve on the board, which is why a fair wage is important. “It’s very tough to do this role because you can’t really have a full-time job.” Wilks said directors are in an enviable position to be able to decide their own wage. He was blunt in saying that it doesn’t matter what the taxpayer thinks, noting some of them believe directors should work for free, while others say they wouldn’t not want the job “for all the tea in China.” Wilks was the one who suggested the remuneration be increased to $60,000 for electoral area directors. “That is closer to a live wage; $49,000 is too low, make it $60,000 and let the electorate decide if we were right or not.” Electoral area G director Roberta Schnider admitted she was feeling a little uncomfortable with this level of increase. “I think it’s a bit rich right now,” she stated, noting that some residents are saying that directors are giving themselves a big raise. “I’m fine with $49,000.” Electoral area F director Susan Clovechok agreed. “We do this work because we love our communities,” she said, “I’m not comfortable going to $60,000; we are not there yet.” Electoral area B director Stan Doehle agreed that $60,000 is a big raise, but he noted it’s still not a liv-
ing wage. “We need to attract the younger crowd to get into politics.” Another director said they are all sitting around the table with grey hair and wrinkles hoping that someone younger will come on board, but they can’t afford to at the current rate of pay. Kimberley mayor Don McCormick said the pubic originally saw this job as a volunteer position, but that has changed. “These aren’t volunteer jobs anymore, they are full time.” Again, Wilks said the pay raise is more than justified. “It’s the one goddamn thing we

Haley Watson made another court appearance on December 8 and 10 as families of the victims impacted by a tragic crash last year voiced heart-wrenching statements in court. The incident, which occurred on July 9, 2024, claimed the lives of three young men: Jackson Freeman, Gavin Murray and Brady Tardif. Court documents indicate that Watson, while driving recklessly under the influence of alcohol, lost control of her vehicle and drove over an embankment in Wilmer, striking a pole and killing her three passengers. On December 8, relatives and friends gathered in the courtroom, sharing heartfelt victim impact statements that encapsulated the pain and loss they have endured since the incident. Families painted a vivid picture of the emotional devastation, describing their loved ones as sons, brothers, and friends who were taken too soon. One statement stood out, expressing the anguish of a young child who will grow up without their father, a reminder of the long-lasting effects of this tragedy. Twenty-three-year-old Watson, who was charged with impaired driving causing death, was travelling at a staggering speed of 118 km/h — more than double the legal limit — while her blood alcohol content was also over the double legal threshold. At the time of the crash, she held a Class N licence (novice), which prohibited Watson from consuming any alcohol while operating a motor vehicle. During court proceedings, families reflected on how that fateful day changed their lives forever. “The loss and devastation have overwhelmed us; it will haunt us for the rest of our lives,” one family member stated. As the court deliberated on the case, the prosecution and defence presented their arguments regarding sentencing. The Crown is seeking a five-year prison sentence with an eight-year driving ban, while the defence has requested a much more lenient sentence of house arrest and community service. The judge’s decision is expected on January 30, 2026 when the court reconvenes for sentencing. Watson faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison for the charge she pleaded guilty to earlier this year.

Meanwhile, a grandmother shared her sorrow, stating how she now says, “Love you lots, miss you forever,” a painful testament to what she has lost. In her own statement to the court, Watson shared her feelings of despair, admitting that she has had suicidal thoughts since the accident. “If I could go back to that day, I wish it was me, not the three boys,” she said, though many family members felt her words focused more on her pain rather than addressing the hurt she caused. Families left the courtroom feeling a lack of true remorse from Watson, longing for a sincere apology that they felt was absent in her statements. The proceedings have opened a broader conversation about the consequences of impaired driving and the deep, ongoing impacts on families left in the wake of such irreparable tragedies. As the community continues to process the ramifications of this incident, the upcoming sentencing will serve as a pivotal moment for both the families seeking justice and for Watson as she faces the consequences of her actions. The shadows of that day linger on, with families clinging to the memories of their loved ones lost too soon.

RDEK adopts enforcement bylaw Submitted The RDEK board of directors has adopted a bylaw that will allow compliance officers to issue fines to a maximum of $500, as per the Bylaw Notice Enforcement Act, for a variety of bylaw contraventions. “Aside from short-term rentals operating without a valid Temporary Use Permit, our primary enforcement objective is voluntary com-
pliance; fines will not be the primary means of enforcement,” says RDEK general manager of Development and Protective Services, Michele Bates. “We have traditionally seen a high rate of voluntary compliance, and our intention is to pursue that before further steps are taken.” The bylaw contraventions include noise, unsightly premises, dog control, building bylaws, and more. The learning of Lucas Only seven more sleeps until Christmas. That’s what ‘Nanna’ told Lucas as she snuggled him into bed with his Spiderman teddy. Poor teddy. He sported a crooked smile after Hamus (their Dachshund) jumped him from behind when nobody was looking. Lucas glanced at the dazzling Christmas lights outside his bedroom window where a light snowfall dusted the driveway. “Nanna, how many presents will Santa bring me?” he asked. She peered through her cat-like spectacles and chuckled. “When I was a little girl we only received a pair of knitted socks and maybe an orange and a piece of candy.” Lucas scrunched up his face. “Huh? That’s not very fun, Nanna. Didn’t you get toys and stuff?” Nanna explained that folks didn’t have much money back then and couldn’t afford to buy toys. So, they made them out of wood instead. Lucas frowned again. “But Santa brings them on his sleigh,” he asserted. Nanna suddenly coughed, saying she forgot about that small detail. “I must be gettin’ old and forgetful,” she said. She then closed the storybook they were reading and explained to Lucas the true meaning of Christmas. “It’s not about toys and how many presents you get, Lucas, it’s about spending time with your family and helping others in need.” Lucas pondered while watching the snow pile up on his window sill. “Like how, Nanna? Like . . . if you were Santa, what would you bring everyone for Christmas?” Nanna thought carefully before answering. “Well, I would ask the elves to cook as many turkeys as they could to feed all of the hungry families in town. Then I would build houses for everyone who didn’t have a home.” Lucas smiled and immediately had an idea: “Nanna, can you tell Santa to bring me only one toy and give the rest to the poor kids.” He also decided to break his piggy bank open to help build a new home for them. Stronger action needed The Fairmont and Windermere community associations are calling on the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) to take stronger action on short-term rental (STR) enforcement and the increasing concentration of STRs in single-family residential neighbourhoods. On November 13 our associations presented two research papers to the RDEK Planning and Development Services Committee: strengthening enforcement of the STR Temporary Use Permit Policy and managing STR concentration. The presentations outlined concerns about ineffective enforcement, low fines and long compliance timelines, unreliable complaint mechanisms, limited transparency, reduced housing availability, and the cumulative impacts of STR concentrations on neighbourhood livability. In response to the presentations, RDEK plan-
ning staff prepared two reports to be discussed at the December 11 planning meeting. To assist directors in their deliberations, our associations have provided two summary tables comparing our recommendations with the staff responses and identifying where additional measures may be required to protect residential areas and ensure consistent enforcement. We emphasize that addressing both enforcement challenges and STR density is necessary to stabilize single-family residential neighbourhoods while continuing to support responsible STR operators and the local tourism economy. Village hires new CAO in Canal Flats By Steve Hubrecht

Cynthia White started in the role, which has been vacant for more than a year, on Monday, Dec. 1 The village hired White in late November. She has been working remotely from Merritt and plans to move to Canal Flats early in the new year. “We’re very excited to have Cynthia join the team. She brings plenty of experience and she’s hit the ground running,” Canal Flats corporate officer Sylvie Hoobanoff told the Pioneer. Up until December Hoobanoff had been interim Canal Flats CAO for 14 months, ever since former CAO Richard Wayken stepped back from the role. Wayken took leave from his CAO position in 2024 at a time when allegations flew about dealings between the village and companies owned or managed by Wayken’s son. These allegations have never been publicly proven one way or the other, but were a hot-button topic during a Canal Flats by-election in summer 2024 in which councillors Andrew
Wietzel and Paul Marcil were elected. Hoobanoff could not publicly comment what ultimately happened with Wayken, but did explain that the village had been actively searching for a new CAO for six months before hiring White. Prior to taking the reins in Canal Flats, White was CAO in Merritt for more than two years, from August 2023 to October 2025. Before that, she was SAO (senior administrative officer) in the Town of Fort Smith on the Slave River in the Northwest Territories from April 2021 to August 2023. White worked in several other roles at Fort Smith, beginning in 2013, before becoming SAO there. A biography posted to the Canal

Flats village website and Facebook page outlined that “When Cynthia is not at work, she coaches various youth sports and spends time outdoors with her family. She can often be seen trying to keep up with her kids — and usually failing — while snowboarding or skiing.” The Pioneer attempted to contact White for comment last week but was unable to reach her prior to press deadline. White patched into the Monday, Dec. 8 Canal Flats council meeting digitally and took the oath of office as new CAO. Another meeting the village had planned for December was postponed until January to give White a chance to get up to speed. Councillor Paul Marcil still felt “we have to get some scheduling going ... so that we know this budget is not going to be (done) three days before the May deadline.” But other councillors felt differently and were okay waiting until January.
“I do think the municipality is experiencing some risk and it needs to be addressed,” White explained during the meeting. “Maybe not wholly in this budget cycle, but over the next couple of years, there’s got to be some significant discussions about financial risk and infrastructure risk that the municipality is facing.” White said she wants a more “fulsome picture” of the situation from village staff, but later did elaborate that “there are some significant things that need to be discussed and considered and put into the public discourse around the lack of funding for infrastructure repair and replacement and the lack of reserves in general.” She suggested there could be additional meetings with council and staff and “some form of engaging engagement. Not just ‘here’s the budget, let’s talk about it’, but with the community.”

The Legion Courtesy Van is run by Royal Canadian Legion Windermere District Branch 71 and its first trip was on Friday, Dec. 12.

The van was once known as Katie’s Van and was started many years ago by local accessibility advocate Katie Gibbs, before more recently being operated by the Columbia House Enhancement Society (CHES). The Legion has been working for the better part of a year now to take over the fully wheelchair-accessible vehicle and get it ready to roll again. Legion volunteers refurbished the van, undertaking repairs and making some safety updates. “We saw there was a need for someone to step in and help keep the van going, so we decided to get involved,” Legion Branch 71 president Marius Hoofd explained to the Pioneer. The courtesy van is free for veterans and for local residents who need accessible transportation, with the aim of helping veterans and those with mobility challenges with hospital visits, medical appointments and recreational outings
within the Columbia Valley and as far north as Golden and as far south as Cranbrook. Although the van is free, the Legion is grateful for any donations from users or other community members. Such donations will not only keep the courtesy van on the road, but will also help build up a fund so that should the van “give up the ghost, we can get another vehicle to continue the service,” said Hoofd, adding the service “certainly is needed here in the valley.” The launch of the van comes just a few weeks before 2026, the local Legion branch’s centennial year. “It’s been 100 years of service, 100 years of remembrance, and 100 years of community,” explained Hoofd, noting the van is one of many community-oriented projects the Legion is involved with. Valley gives film company good vibrations

But trying to fill the gaps by investing is a gamble, she admitted. That’s why there’s a push to build interest and create production activity, she added. Shaak referred to the latest project “All Night Wrong” that was filmed in Invermere and Radium Hot Springs, noting it was exciting to see people coming out at 3 a.m. to watch the filming. An independent film company is promoting the Columbia Valley as a go-to venue for making movies. Sara Shaak and John Bell from Anamorphic Media Inc. (AMI) shared their enthusiasm with the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) during a recent presentation to the board. Shaak, an executive producer and former film commissioner, said the valley feels like “the last frontier” in film development. “ A few areas in BC haven’t been able to realize as much activity, and this area is one of them,” she said.

The Bylaw Enforcement Notice Bylaw is now in effect, allowing compliance officers to issue fines to a maximum of $500, as per the Bylaw Notice Enforcement Act, for a variety of bylaw contraventions, including noise, illegal campgrounds, dog control, building bylaws, and more. Aside from short-term rental use, the RDEK’s primary enforcement objective is voluntary compliance, so fines will not be the primary means of enforcement. The intention is to pursue compliance with the same approach as has been traditionally undertaken. In November, RDEK Compliance Officers were provided with access to the Province’s Short-Term Rental Data Registry. Currently, the RDEK Compliance Officers are forwarding requests to the Province to cease providing platform services for short-term rentals that are operating without an approved Temporary Use Permit. Decrease the waste As we head into the holiday season, it’s important to remember that while our festive spirit may grow, our holiday waste doesn’t have to. HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL TIPS FOR REDUCING WHAT ENDS UP IN THE LANDFILL:
• Wrap gifts in recyclable paper, or even better, use repurposed paper or fabric. • Ribbons and bows aren’t recyclable, so consider decorating with a sprig of greenery. If you do use ribbons or bows, save them to reuse next year. • Choose reusable boxes, tins, or bags for gift-giving. • Bring reusable baking or casserole dishes to dinners and potlucks. Picking up a few second-hand dishes ahead of time means you won’t worry about getting them back.
• Get creative with leftovers to help prevent food waste. • Consider giving experiences such as tickets to a show, a class, or a sporting event. This helps avoid unwanted gifts ending up in the landfill. • Look for sustainably made products. • Support local markets and shops, where goods are often produced closer to home with less packaging. • Invest in rechargeable batteries. • Use LED Christmas lights. They last for years and can be recycled.

It's a 'silver' start to the ski cross season for Windermere racer Courtney Hoffos. The local ski cross athlete began the World Cup circuit with a bang, finishing second in the very first race of the winter in Val Thorens, France last week and sealing a spot at the upcoming Milano Corina Winter Olympics. Hoffos started out slowly in the ‘big final’ on Thursday, Dec. 11 on the notoriously tactical ski cross course in Val Thorens, skiing in the back before pulling into third, then slipping into second and holding on to that spot to take the silver medal. After strong results, including multiple podiums and ‘big finals’ last winter, Hoffos came into this season needing just one top 16 finish to guarantee her place at the Olympics in Italy this February. Hoffos obviously cleared that benchmark by a wide margin by ending up on podium, and it seems her strong performance last season has carried over into this year. Ski cross combines elements of alpine racing and freestyle skiing. Skiers rip down a course filled with banked turns, gates, jumps and other obstacles in heats of four. The first two racers across the finish line advance to the next round (the bottom two are eliminated), and the heats continue, in progressive stages, until just four skiers are left and they race in the ‘big final’. In the Dec. 11 ‘big final’, Swedish racer Sandra Naeslund and French racer Mylene Ballet Baz pulled ahead early, with Hoffos and German racer Daniela Maier neck and neck in the back. By the time the skiers were about halfway down the course, in a shady zone, Naeslund was out in front on her own, followed by Ballet Baz. Hoffos was solidly in third, and Maier trailed behind. As the racers came into a sharp corner, Naeslund went very wide. Ballet Baz also went slightly wide, but Hoffos cut her turn tight — almost unbelievably tight to the eyes of a viewer — allowing her to skip ahead of Ballet Baz. The French skier tried hard to catch up to Hoffos through the final few features and turns of the course,
but Hoffos clung to her position and earned the silver. The very next day, on Friday, Dec. 12, Hoffos finished seventh in the second World Cup ski cross race of the season, also at Val Thorens. “It’s pretty unreal. It’s a huge boost of confidence,” Hoffos told the Pioneer. “The first race can be nerve wracking. You don’t know what to expect, there’s uncertainty, because the season is just starting. So it feels really good (to get silver).” Even though Hoffos had great results last winter, several top female ski cross racers were out injured at the time, and Hoffos was unsure how she’d stack up against them once they were back. Those injured skiers included Naeslund, who was a dominant force at World Cup races before missing all of last season, and who has clearly came back with verve this season. “I knew I’d been skiing well in qualifying and in the training runs, but anything can happen in a race,” said Hoffos. “The track is fun because it’s very tactical ... it’s one of my favourite stops (on the World Cup tour) for that reason.” ‘Tactical’ courses are those that give plenty of opportunities for racers to strategize and to pass opponents as they ski down. Other courses are ‘start races’ that offer fewer such opportunities and in which the racers who get out of the start gate the fastest typically go on to win. Hoffos loves the tactical side of ski cross partly because it’s just plain fun and partly because — as she concedes — “I’m not always the best starter. I’m not historically the fastest out of the gate.” The turn on Val Thorens on which Hoffos blew past Ballet Baz is famous among World Cup ski cross racers, who call it ‘the big negative’. It swings left almost 180 degrees, and after being skied hard in training and qualifying all week, it’s usually in rough shape — very bumpy and icy. “It’s a crucial turn. It’s make or break,” said Hoffos. To get around the ‘big negative’ racers can attempt to carve (going wide, but which generates more momentum) or can give up on carving and instead feather their edges, sliding a bit (which loses momentum but which means you can take a tighter line). Local skier gaining big momentum Continued from page 16 When Hoffos realized both Naeslund and Ballet Baz had gone wide “leaving the door open” she decided to try to cut inside and go tight. “Sometimes it works out well, but it really is a tough line to pull off,” admitted Hoffos. But pull it off she did. Hoffos burst onto the ski cross World Cup scene with a silver and a bronze medal in her first few races in 2019. She earned a spot at the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022, where she finished sixth. But in 2023 she suffered a serious injury, missing significant parts of that World Cup season. She recovered, came back, and then began hitting podiums and ‘big finals’ again last winter. Over the next couple of months Hoffos wants to “keep moving the momentum forward and building confidence for the (Olympic) Games. It would be great to contend or even get a medal there. That’s the overall goal for the season.” At her first Olympics in Beijing four years ago, Hoffos skied hard and did well, but admitted “I was kind of just taking it all in. This time I want to be even more focussed.” Hoffos has a few more World Cup races through December and early January before the Olympic team begins several weeks of training leading up to the Games. She extended her thanks to the Columbia Valley residents who follow and support her. “It’s amazing. I really feel the community is behind me,” she said.

SPORTS Cross fit competition taps holiday spirit By Steve Hubrecht
steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Local cross fit athletes were getting festive and getting a workout at the same time recently during the annual SnowSlam competition. The contest brought 38 athletes (all local Columbia Valley residents) on 19 teams out to Endeavor Fitness in Athalmer on Friday, Dec. 5 to compete across three different events. Contestants’ family and friends piled into the gym to cheer their loved ones on. SnowSlam co-organizer Bailey Yeats told the Pioneer the competition is a “fun light- hearted event” meant to built camaraderie, to allow the athletes to showcase their skills and to bring a blast of holiday cheer to the valley. The three events included ‘Tinsel and Tonnage’ (which incorporated weightlifting), ‘Technical Difficulties’ (which challenged participants to work as a team to com-
plete as many handstand pushups, kipping pull ups or hang power cleans and split jerks as possible), and ‘Sleigh the Day’ in which athletes lunged weight to load a sled, and then pulled that sled back and forth as many times as possible). There were prizes for team names and costumes, and the cross fit participants did their best to outdo each other in this regard as well as in the events. Team ‘Tropic It Like It’s Hot, for instance, competed in matching feathery pink flamingo outfits. Other uniforms included old, scratchy Christmas sweaters, as well as one athlete dressed as a yeti and another as Rudolph the reindeer. “The SnowSlam is a great way to gather everyone from all of the different classes, step outside comfort zones and come together to celebrate one another,” Yeats told the Pioneer, extending a thank you to the competition’s sponsors.

Rockies ride active highs and lows Submitted by Columbia Valley Rockies It was a week of hard lessons and high energy for the Junior A Columbia Valley Rockies beginning December 9 on the road in Creston and wrapping up with a packed, party-like atmosphere at home on December 12. On December 9 the Rockies travelled to Creston to take on the Creston Valley Thundercats and ran into a tough, disciplined opponent. Despite strong effort and pushback throughout the game, the Rockies were held off the scoresheet and fell 3-0 in a shutout loss. It was one of those nights where chances were there, but the bounces simply didn’t go the Rockies’ way. Friday night, however, was a completely different scene at Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena as the Rockies hosted their annual ULLR Takes Over the Stands game. Staff from Panorama Mountain Resort and Fairmont Hot Springs Resort packed the building bringing the noise, energy and a full après ski vibe to the rink. The visitors opened the scoring but the Rockies wasted no time responding. With just two
minutes left in the first period Carter Hensch buried the equalizer, assisted by Carter Velker and Johnny Lozeman. Just one minute later the roof nearly came off the building when Harrison Todd struck again for the Rockies set up by Lozeman and Daniel Betcher, giving the home side a 2-1 lead after one. The Rockies came out flying in the second period and needed just 35 seconds to add to their lead. Trae Lees found the twine off a feed from Todd, but the visitors answered back quickly just 20 seconds later. Undeterred, the Rockies poured it on. Cole King scored next, with helpers from Karson Schick and Isaac Sommer, followed by Lozeman who finished off a strong shift with assists from Betcher and Todd. After two periods the Rockies were firmly in control heading to the dressing room up 5-2. The third period saw a dramatic swing in momentum. The visitors came out with urgency and capitalized, scoring four unanswered goals to complete a stunning comeback and hand the Rockies a heartbreaking 6-5 loss. Despite the result, the night was a major win
off the ice. The atmosphere was electric with Panorama and Fairmont staff loud and proud in the stands. The drinks were flowing and the Custom Rockies Lager brewed in partnership with Invermere Brewing Company was the star of the show. ULLR kept the party rolling both in the stands and at the bar serving up cocktails including the night’s specialty Rockies Punch. The celebration carried on well into the early morning hours at ULLR following the game. The night also featured a festive Christmas party hosted by Vision Project Services, adding even more cheer to an already buzzing building. Emily, their executive assistant, capped off the evening in style winning the Shoot to Win contest and earning herself a round of golf at Copper Point Golf Course. The Rockies now turn their focus ahead with their next home game set for Saturday Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. when they welcome the first place Kimberley Dynamiters to town in what promises to be another big night of Junior A hockey in the Columbia Valley.

It was just over a couple of thousand years ago that three wise men delivered on to a new born child three precious gifts. Those gifts began a tradition of giving that has morphed into a massive industry. While history will have its solid believers, likely there will be some who will doubt that once there were three wise men. Nevertheless, those three gifts have caused an accelerated amount of giving every December. Store lights and seasonal music are a powerful pressure to become a material giver. Giving can become more difficult when the pressure is formidable. Real giving, however, arrives without pressure. Likewise, giving can be more meaningful when it arrives as a surprise following a moment of spontaneity. Giving might occur with a well thought out gift wrapped in neat paper all dressed up with a card and a pretty ribbon. It can also occur in a
hundred thousand other ways. A billionaire who has his/her name attached to a children’s hospital and has a front-page tribute in the daily paper will certainly be seen as a giving person. That gift is not to be diminished. Even if it was easy for that giver. It is nevertheless a gift to be recognized. It was an act of kindness. Just as touching, but much less noticed, is the hospice worker who, alone, visits and comforts a dying person. That gift – known only for a few – was a gift without glitter. It was a gift from the heart. A premium moment for someone who had only a few precious moments for connecting with another. This was a gift without paper and a card or a special object, but a gift of warmth with intimacy. A few connective moments before life ends. One thing that my life has taught me is that no one can be a friend if the other will never accept an offer

So, treasure – a material item– is not necessary. Time with kindness is a gift. Giving can also become a nuisance. If you gave a one-time donation to a major charity, you had better withhold your email address. If you did provide your email address you will know the reason that you should have kept it private. November 4, 1953 - December 9, 2025
Linda Chabot, 72, of Penticton, BC, passed away on December 9, 2025, at Penticton Hospital. Linda was born in Ashcroft, BC, on November 4, 1953, and spent much of her childhood in Invermere. She later set down roots in Victoria, where she lived with her parents and siblings and raised her young children. Linda enjoyed a fulfilling career in government, beginning as a BC Driver’s Licence agent in Victoria. Her work gave her the opportunity to live in several communities while serving various ministries. She retired as the Government Agent in Nakusp before settling in Penticton with her husband. Linda was predeceased by her parents, James and Grace Chabot, and her brother Jim Chabot. She is survived by her husband, Pat Sweeney; her children Brendan (Danielle), Chantal (Phil), Katie, and Nicole (Vince); her sister Dawn (Phil); her brothers Rob, Alan, and Mark (Marlene); and her beloved grandchildren Tayler, Jacob, Danniel, Ethan, Kamden, Alexandra, Charlotte, and Lily.
Linda loved biking, kayaking, and camping with her family. She had a passion for dancing and playing music, especially “Rock Party.” A devoted George Thorogood fan, she attended many of his concerts over the years. She cherished traveling throughout BC to visit family and enjoyed driving the province’s scenic roads, particularly around Penticton and Victoria. Linda was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter. Her humor and love for others shone through everything she did and will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. She is sadly missed by family and friends. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date via social media. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local Rotary Club, where Linda and Pat were avid volunteers during their retirement. In Loving Memory of Peter Cameron Sutherland July 10, 1940 – December 5, 2025
Peter was born in Cranbrook, BC. After graduation he worked for an oil company in Calgary for a few years then went back to school to become a teacher. He taught three years in Mica, then taught in Revelstoke for the remainder of his career. He loved the outdoors – camping, fishing and hunting with his camera. His favorite subject was bears! He was an avid reader and eclectic art collector. Peter moved to Invermere in 2021 to be closer to his sister Thelma. He lived in Columbia Garden Village until ill health forced his move to Durand Manor in Golden where he passed. Peter was predeceased by his parents, James and Eileen Sutherland, his siblings, Anne Pfund, James Sutherland, Thelma Letcher, Kathleen Letcher and by his niece Linda Letcher. He is survived by eleven nieces and nephews and nineteen Grandnephews and nieces.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Position: Casual Labourer Department: Public Works & Operations Status: CUPE – Casual, on-call Classification: Labourer The District of Invermere is seeking applications for our Casual on call Employee list for 2025/2026 in the Public Works Department. To be eligible you must possess a valid class 5 driver’s license. Special consideration will be given to people with previous construction or municipal works experience including Environmental Operators Certification. An air brakes endorsement or a valid class 3 driver’s license would be an asset. Under the supervision of the Public Works Supervisor, the casual employee performs a variety of manual labour duties and equipment operations. Work involves the general maintenance of municipal infrastructures including roads and streets, storm drainage, water and sewer systems, parks, gardens, cemetery and buildings. The primary tasks considered for this posting involve buildings, parks, roads and utility maintenance and repair and must be willing to come in contact with live sewer. Applicants must possess sound communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of WorkSafe BC regulations would be an asset. This position is within C.U.P.E. 2982 bargaining unit. FAITH The forgotten chapter By Brent Woodard Windermere Valley Shared Ministry There’s a part of the birth stories of Jesus that doesn’t get much attention. Most people know about the journey to Bethlehem, the baby being laid in a manger, the shepherds and wise men, and about the star moving in the sky. But most people don’t know much about the involvement of King Herod and the killing of innocent children in the birth story of Jesus. Of course, Christmas cards don’t include pictures of a mad king with soldiers killing children. When putting together a Christmas pageant, no kind teacher is going to get children to act out this part of the story. So, it gets minimized. Yet there it is, in the gospel of Matthew. Mary and Joseph are warned in a dream to flee with their child. They flee to Egypt. It doesn’t call them refugees or undocumented immigrants, but they are. They are fleeing political persecution. And then the story continues in the Bible under the subtitle “The Massacre of the Infants.” It reads “When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under ….” It is a grotesque part of the story. There is no historical evidence that it actually happened. It might have been written into the story because it is the same story that was told around the birth of Moses. The book of Exodus says that at the time when Moses was born “Pharaoh commanded all his
people, ‘Every boy that is born to the Hebrews you shall throw into the Nile….’” So, perhaps it is written into the birth story of Jesus because the writers wanted to connect Jesus to Moses. For them, Jesus was going to be a new Moses, a new liberator, and lead people out of that which holds them in bondage. In real life Herod was a sick guy who killed innocent people to maintain his jealous grip on power. The birth stories aren’t just about angels and starry nights and serene adults looking down on a plump baby in a manger. They include a crazy murderous person getting others to do unspeakable things to innocent people. Very sadly, it is an old story that is still with us. According to the British Ministry of Defence, more than one million Russian troops have been killed or injured since the invasion of Ukraine began in 2022. Ukraine has suffered casualties reaching approximately 400,000. More than 70,000 people have died in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023. Because USAID was disbanded less than a year ago, it is estimated 600,000 people, mostly children, have died due to the loss of medicine and food. There is more than one way King Herods kill innocent children. The forgotten story of King Herod in the birth stories of Jesus is a message that the Herods of this world are always threatened by awakened, enlightened people. In the midst of darkness, light is being born. Jesus was like a new Moses, teaching a way that was, and is, liberating and transformative for individuals and the world. The invitation of Jesus, and the invitation of Christmas, is to follow this way.
