A Message from the General Manager Dear Columbia Members, One of the things I continue to enjoy most about summer at Columbia is that it reminds us that we are much more than a golf course, racquets facility, pool complex, or dining operation. We are a community. Over the past several months, I have watched members gather for everything from opening day at the pool and family events to championship golf, racquets, and dinners with friends. While the activities themselves are important, what stands out most is seeing the connections that are made along the way. It is what gives Columbia its personality and what makes the Club special. That spirit was on full display during the 105th Maryland Amateur Championship in June. Columbia had the opportunity to welcome players, officials, volunteers, and guests from across the state, and the feedback we received was exceptional. While the condition of the golf course and the professionalism of our operation were frequently praised, what people seemed to remember most was the hospitality of our members and staff. I would like to thank Head Golf Professional Steve Delmar, Golf Course Superintendent Andrew Crawford, and their teams for the tremendous effort required to host a championship of this caliber. I would also like to recognize the eleven Columbia members who competed in the event and represented the Club with pride, sportsmanship, and class throughout the week. A special thank you goes to Mr. Jack Barse for his countless hours working alongside Columbia and the Maryland State Golf Association to help ensure the championship's success. His dedication was instrumental throughout the planning and execution of the event. As we look ahead, there is still much to enjoy this season. From family events at the pool and Club Championships to wine dinners, social gatherings, and countless opportunities to spend time with friends and family, the months ahead promise to be some of the best of the year. Thank you for your continued support of the Club. I hope you and your family have a wonderful remainder of the summer, and I look forward to seeing you around Columbia in the months ahead.

LOSE WEIGHT LIKE A PRO GLP-1 drugs are all the rage nowadays. Everyone knows someone who is taking them, and it is impossible to get through a few minutes of television without an ad popping up. While these drugs help around 30 million Americans shed some weight, they have other side effects that are important to keep in mind, such as muscle loss and decreased bone density. So, how do these drugs work, and what should we be aware of before taking them? Let’s dive in.

HOW DO GLP-1 DRUGS WORK? GLP-1 drugs mimic our natural gut hormones, reducing appetite and slowing the movement of food through our digestive system. These are just fancy ways to say that GLP-1 drugs help people eat less. And when our body consumes fewer calories than it burns, we lose weight.

WHO CAN TAKE THEM? Currently, anyone with a BMI above 30 (or a BMI above 27 paired with a specific health condition) and a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.

ARE THERE ANY DOWNSIDES TO TAKING A GLP-1 MEDICATION? Like most medications, GLP-1s have side effects that can be quite severe, though they are rare. More importantly, research suggests that a significant amount of GLP-1 weight loss comes from lean body mass, mostly muscle. These estimates range from 25-40%, meaning that for every 10lbs weight loss, between 2.5 and 4 of those pounds are muscle. It is important to note that this muscle loss is common with any weight loss strategy and is not exclusive to GLP-1s.

WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? Muscle tissue is incredibly important for overall health and function. Not only does it keep you toned, but muscle helps regulate blood sugar, burns calories, and prevents disease. That is why it is so important to do everything we can to preserve, and if possible, build more muscle. And nothing builds muscle better than consistent and heavy resistance training.

THE BOTTOM LINE Resistance training is the BEST way to minimize muscle degradation during a weight loss phase, though it should be a consistent part of your exercise routine no matter what. Contact the Fitness Center today to get started with a goal appropriate training routine. 301-951-5066 | jklimkiewicz@columbiacc.org

A Message from the Director of Racquets Dear Columbia Members, Over the past few months, I have had the privilege of settling into my new role here at Columbia, and I can honestly say that everyone has made me feel right at home. The “Warm Columbia Welcome” is definitely a real thing, and it has meant so much to me and my family to feel so welcomed into this special community. It already feels great to be part of the Columbia family. I have also found a great rhythm with our Racquets team, and I am incredibly thankful for the hard work, energy, and care they bring to the department each day. Together, we have spent a great deal of time enhancing our events and the Racquets Pro Shop. We've been bringing in great new vendors, refreshing the overall experience, and introducing member pricing as one more way to show how much we value and appreciate your support. The events we have hosted so far have been a lot of fun and have given me a great opportunity to see firsthand what makes Columbia so special. The Men’s March Madness Paddle Tournament, Ladies Tennis Opening Day, the Men’s McNair/Myers Tennis Member-Guest, and the Ladies Margaret Lundy Dell Tennis Member-Guest were all wonderful events filled with great tennis, paddle, camaraderie, and member engagement. The support and participation from the membership has been outstanding, and it is easy to see why Columbia has such a strong and special racquets community. As we head into the summer, I am excited to continue building on that momentum with new events, fresh programming, and a few special additions to the schedule. One fun new piece for our juniors this summer is the introduction of “Racquet Bucks” at summer camp. Racquet Bucks will serve as our new junior currency in the Racquets Department. Campers will have the opportunity to earn them throughout the summer and spend them in their very own special pro shop, adding another fun and engaging element to the camp experience. Thank you again for the warm welcome and for making these first few months so enjoyable. I look forward to continuing to meet more of you, spending time on court together, and helping you and your families enjoy the Club for many years to come. Sincerely,

Jeff Wiedemann Director of Racquets

CHOOSING THE RIGHT STRING & TENSION FOR YOUR RACQUET One of the most overlooked parts of your tennis equipment is also one of the most important: your strings. The right string and tension can have a major impact on comfort, power, control, spin, and overall playability. In my past life, I spent many years as a professional racquet stringer on tour, with the opportunity to string at Grand Slam events including the US Open and Australian Open, as well as tournaments around the world such as the China Open and Miami Open. Over the years, I have strung racquets for players including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, the Bryan Brothers, and many more. After stringing more than 20,000 racquets, one thing is clear: the best setup is different for every player. When choosing string, there are a few main categories to understand:

NATURAL GUT Natural gut is the softest, most playable, and most arm-friendly string available. It offers outstanding comfort, feel, power, and tension maintenance, making it a great option for players with arm issues or tennis elbow. The downside is that it is expensive and not as durable as some other options.

MULTIFILAMENT Multifilament string is often the best choice for many club players. It offers some of the comfort and playability of natural gut at a much lower price point. It is soft, powerful, arm-friendly, and a great option for players who want comfort and feel without the cost of gut.

POLYESTER Polyester, often called “poly,” is the stiffest of the common string types. While it is used by many professional players because it offers control, spin, and durability, it is not always ideal for recreational players. Poly loses tension quickly and can be tough on the arm, especially if left in your racquet for too long. Professional players restring every single match for this very reason.

HYBRID SETUP Some players also benefit from a hybrid setup, which uses two different strings in the same racquet. This can help combine the benefits of different strings, such as comfort and power from gut or multifilament with added control or durability from polyester. Tension is just as important as string type. In general, lower tension gives you more power, comfort, and depth, while higher tension gives you more control and a firmer feel. For many adult club players, a softer multifilament string at a moderate tension is often a better choice than a tight polyester setup. A good rule of thumb is to restring your racquet as many times per year as you play per week. If you play twice per week, restring at least twice per year. If you play four times per week, restring about four times per year. Also, avoid leaving your racquet in the car during the heat of summer or cold of winter, as extreme temperatures can compromise the string job and affect tension and performance. The right string and tension can make your racquet feel better, protect your arm, and help you enjoy your time on court. If you are unsure what setup is best for your game, our Racquets team is always happy to help! Columbia Country Club | 11

from the columbia foundation 2026 Community Impact Fund Update On May 27, 2026, the Columbia Foundation held our 2026 Community Impact Fund (CIF) award ceremony at the Club. Based on member input, we solicited grant applications from worthy non-profit organization across the area, focusing in 3 key areas: Housing, Health and Wellness, and Family and Child Welfare. While all of the applicants are worthy of Columbia Foundation grants and assistance, we make one award per category, in the amount of $15,000 per grant. Our strategy is to deliver fewer, more impactful grants, to help these organizations prosper and serve the community. We were pleased to receive 16 incredible applications for the 3 grants, including a handful of organizations that are new to the Columbia Foundation. It was a pleasure to review their applications and proposals and understand how a CIF grant could impact these teams and the community members they serve. We are proud to announce the 3 winners are:

Housing: Hope & A Home Hope and a Home's mission is to empower lower income families with children in the Washington, D.C. area to attain their aspirations. Their mandate is to break the cycle of poverty for qualified families through a series of programs and services, all aimed at helping families create stable homes of their own and to make lasting changes in their lives. The grant will support the housing program and wraparound services helping to ensure children grow up in safe and stable homes with the resources they need to learn and thrive.

Health & Wellness: KEEN KEEN's focus is to empower youth with disabilities and impact volunteer coaches throughout the DMV through participation in free, non-competitive, one-onone programs of physical activity and fun. These programs support the overall health and well-being of all participants, improving the quality of life for them and their families. KEEN programs help KEEN "athletes", as they engage in various sports activities, to improve their social skills, develop their independence and provide them with a strong inclusive community. This grant will provide additional financial resources to allow KEEN to continue to grow and reach more families in Montgomery County. It will also facilitate new and exciting activities in collaboration with the Best Buddies program aiming to start in the Fall of 2026.

Family & Child Welfare: Christ Child Society The Christ Child Society of Washington DC, a 135-year-old organization much beloved by many Columbia members, received a grant in the Family & Child Welfare Category. The grant will be used by Christ Child to support its work with CentroNia at the Martha Gudelsky Child Development Center in Silver Spring, MD. Funds received will be applied to expand an early literacy program called “Read to Me” and to provide books, layettes and toddler sacks to families, the vast majority of whom live at or below the federal poverty level. 14 | July/August/September

Dear Members of Columbia Country Club, Community has always been at the heart of The Columbia Foundation—both within the Club and beyond its doors. For more than 25 years, the Foundation has been privileged to serve a community-focused mission, made possible by the generosity of members like you. Over the past six years alone, your Foundation awarded more than $750,000 in grants — providing critical assistance to Columbia employees facing hardship, supporting educational aspirations for employees and their families, and strengthening charitable organizations that make a meaningful difference across Montgomery County and the metropolitan area:

$400,000+

$75,000+

$50,000+

$200,000+

to 137 employees needing hardship relief, and employee appreciation initiatives support

toward education for 20 employees and 7 family members

to the First Tee of Greater Washington, DC program

to 15 impactful local nonprofit organizations

Behind those impressive numbers is a friend, a family or a neighbor whose life has been meaningfully impacted. Today, we ask for your continued support as we set an ambitious goal: to raise $250,000 over the next 6 months to expand and deepen our investment in the people who make our Club exceptional -- our employees. Your contribution will allow us to continue providing vital hardship relief to employees in need and supporting educational opportunities that open doors for employees and their families. It will also enable us to introduce new initiatives, including English as a Second Language (ESL) programs to strengthen communication across our team, as well as financial literacy resources to support long-term stability and success. Investing in the people who serve our community every day directly improves their lives and, in turn, gives life to the “warm Columbia welcome” and strengthens the Spirit of Columbia that we all value. We invite you to make a tax-deductible gift of any amount, be that $100, $250, $500, or more. Donations can be made either online at www.thecolumbia.foundation, or by mailing a check payable to The Columbia Foundation (please include “Employee Fund” in the memo): The Columbia Foundation 7900 Connecticut Avenue Chevy Chase, MD 20815 Every contribution, at any level, makes a meaningful difference. Thank you for the continued generosity and for helping carry forward the Foundation’s legacy of supporting others. With gratitude,
