Columbia Association’s Serve, Rally and Play program is designed for Play Tennis Fast graduates and 2.0 intermediate beginners. The class format of non-stop instructional play with our certified tennis coaches will allow players to hone their game in singles and doubles featuring a “Rally and Play” approach. Make new friends, and get started on a healthy social activity today. *Pre-enrollment is required as space is limited.

The Adult Instructional and Drill Tennis Program has offerings for all levels at various times. Classes consist of skill-building, technical refinement, and match play, depending on the class.

Class descriptions correspond with player’s playing abilities:
2.1-2.5 Advanced Beginner
This player is learning to keep the ball in play, but needs to improve court positioning and consistency.
2.6-3.0 Lower Intermediate (Approval of the Adult Tennis Director required.)
This player can play singles and doubles, but needs to improve net play and basic tactics.
3.1-3.5 Intermediate (Approval of the Adult Tennis Director required.)
This player has dependable strokes but lacks depth and variety. This player lacks consistency when trying for power.
3.6-4.0 Advanced Intermediate (Approval of the Adult Tennis Director required.)
This player is developing the use of lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys, and is seldom out of position in singles and doubles.
4.1-4.5 Advanced (Approval of the Adult Tennis Director required.)
This player has begun to hit with power, spin, depth and control and can move into a net position with some success in singles and doubles.

Level 7 Beginner (Red Balls)
36-foot court • Ages 5-6
A program of movement, balance, coordination, and motor skill development with a focus on self and partner rallying skills in the Micro Court. Both reception and projection activities will be emphasized. Children will learn the first stages of cooperative tennis. They learn how to initiate a rally, how to move and judge a ball (reception and centering skills), how to control the racquet at the contact point and control the height, direction and depth to be successful on the 36’ court. They will learn adaptive skills that will be the foundation of their future tennis development.

Level 6 Beginner (Red Balls)
36-foot court • Ages 6-7
Children will learn the skills of the 36’ court. By the end of this program, your child should be able to play minitennis using a full or abbreviated serving motion. They will learn how to move effectively so as to ensure good position and balance for each shot. They will be taught how to adapt to different situations and to control a followthrough on both the forehand and the backhand groundstrokes.

Level 4 Beginner (Red and Orange Balls)
42- to 60-foot courts • Ages 8-12
Students will learn the basics of tactical play as they transition from the 36’ court to the 60’ court for singles and doubles. Swing rhythm on the forehands and backhands will be emphasized. The children will be introduced to topspin and will learn how to differentiate between a volley action and a ground stroke action. A variety of serve progressions will be taught. Serve and return of serve will be covered in each class.

Ball control exercises that enhance consistency, direction, depth and spin will be stressed. A variety of adaptive skills will be trained using dead ball drills, live ball drills and competitive play situations in all areas of the court. Students should compete in Junior Match Play.

This program is for players ages 9-12 who participate in USTA-sanctioned tournaments and are going through the youth progression pathway. Class will focus on techniques needed to hit with heavier and higher bouncing balls. Class will prepare students for tournament training, middle and high school tennis teams. Some match play will be included during most clinic hours.

The Junior Competition Program is designed for the more advanced player. The program stresses technical refinement, situational training, mental skill development, and tennisspecific fitness training. Match play performance will improve with on-court tournament experience.

Tournament Training (by invitation only)
Designed for players interested in developing skills essential for competition. Students will focus on improving tactical and technical game-based applications. Attention will also be on improving match play performance with an emphasis on footwork and conditioning, match play tactics, mechanics, mental toughness and sportsmanship. Players must make a commitment to developing the mental, as well as physical aspects of the game. Workouts will be intensive and demanding. Competing in Junior Tennis Match Play/ Junior team tennis matches is strongly encouraged. Tournament preparation information will be provided.
