Colorado Influenza Stats & Tips Stay Healthy in the Influenza Season

A

lot more than just chilly air seems to be sneaking into homes. The influenza season continues to trouble us, especially when we feel we have no time to spare. There is nothing like the flu to break down New Year's resolutions and business goals. Here is a look at the current Colorado influenza situation and a few tips at avoiding the flu. • The geographic spread of influenza activity in the state of Colorado is widespread. • Sentinel hospital labs (17 of 23 reporting) tested 2725 specimens and 656 (24.1%) were positive for influenza. • Influenza-like illness patient visits reported by outpatient clinics was 6.7%. This is above the baseline level of 5.05%. This includes data from Kaiser Permanente and Primary Care Partners clinics located in the North Central, Northeast, Northwest, South, and South-Central regions of the state. • Syndromic surveillance of influenzalike illness patient visits in emergency departments in the Denver-metro area is at 6.7%. This is above the seasonal baseline level of 1.78%. • There have been seven outbreaks in long-term care facilities associated with influenza reported for the 2019-20 influ-

tance from anyone already infected with the flu. If you cannot excommunicate every sick person from your life, you should take care when you are around them! Avoid touching anything with their fluids, use masks and gloves, and constantly keep surfaces clean. The virus can still reach the extremely cautious, so keep your immune system up with plenty of sleep and vitamins. Vaccinations are key in helping your body get a head-start on the flu, in case it does reach you. Colorado Times wishes everyone a lovely and healthy start to the new decade. By Agnes Park

enza season. • One hundred and eighteen influenzaassociated hospitalizations were reported during the week ending January 4, 2020. The total number of hospitalizations since the beginning of the 2019-2020 season is now 765. • There have been no pediatric influenza deaths. The data above was provided by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Some quick health tips to avoid the flu: wash your hands, avoid touching your face, stay away from any sickly people, stay warm, get plenty of sleep, and get vaccinated. Washing your hands and shared surfaces helps to reduce your chances of getting the flu by killing the virus before it gets into your body. For the same reason, you should avoid carelessly touching your face, especially your nose and mouth. Obviously, this also means keeping a good dis-

2020 Denver Real Estate Market Trends Real Estate Column 14: Searching for Clues in 2020 Real Estate Trends

Dear Real Estate Column Readers, What does the Denver real estate market look like for 2020? Well, let’s look at the stats from December 2019 to gauge what is most likely to happen in 2020. The number of pending sales is much greater than the new listings that came on the market in December. This is putting extra pressure on the number of homes available for purchase, and in turn, driving down the number of weeks of inventory to 5 weeks. It looks like the 2020 housing market will once again favor the sellers as the inventory is at an all-time low in our real estate market. At the city level, a similar theme exists. In Aurora, there were 379 new listings that came onto the market in December, but there were 639 homes that sold in December, creating downward pressure on the inventor. In Castle Rock, there were 102 new listings, and again, the

sold homes were higher at 188 homes. In Centennial, there were 81 new homes for sale and 143 sold homes. In Denver, there were 637 new homes with 1120 homes sold. In Highlands Ranch, 66 new homes came on the market with 127 homes sold. In Parker, 109 new versus 168 sold.

All of the 11 cities that make up the greater Metro Denver area had more sold homes than the new listings that came onto the market in December. With the current 5 weeks of inventory of home, I think it is safe to say the price of homes will once again increase this year, barring any major issue with the

local economy or national economy. All the above data came from SMDRA’s (South Metro Denver REALTOR Association) Market Data session conducted on 1/10/20. They evaluated the numbers from its MLS data source, www.ReColorado.com. The homes were located within the 7 counties (Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Elbert and Jefferson). BTS BTS Comes Back Stronger Than Before Comes Back Stronger Than Before “Interlude: Shadow”

T

he popular South Korean idol group, BTS, seems to only be growing in popularity. BTS's recently released comeback trailer has quickly climbed in views even faster than before. "Interlude: Shadow" has almost doubled the number of views of their previous comeback trailer!

On January 10 at midnight KST, BTS dropped Suga’s hard-hitting “Interlude: Shadow” trailer for their comeback. The group is known to release a video featuring one member’s solo song as the first teaser for each comeback. The solo track serves as the intro to the new album.

Within 24 hours of its release, “Interlude: Shadow” hit 19.65 million views on YouTube, making it the biggest first day opening yet for a BTS comeback trailer. The video also reached 3.6 million likes within the same 24 hours. For reference, the following lists each comeback's solo song views in 24 hours from least to most recent. stalk the group. The lyrics in “Interlude: Shadow” speak about shadows that darken the brighter they shine. While the song might contain other meanings, it seems to speak on the dual nature of the K-Pop industry and how being at the top brings troubles of its own.

Many speculated that BTS could be a fad whose popularity would fade away as fast as it rose, but the recent views highlight a true "comeback" for the popular idol group. The group has announced that they’ll be dropping their new album on February 21st. The preorders for “Map of the Soul" began on January 9th. Details will continue to be shared via BTS’s fan cafe and WeVerse.

By Agnes Park

BTS fans are beyond excited for the comeback, as the rest of the world remains struck by the continuous popularity the group is experiencing. While it is exciting to see Korean influence rise globally through this popular group, this new edgy song may suggest difficulties of BTS’s massive popularity. The group members have expressed concerns about overtly passionate fans that

Hopefully, the popularity of this group does not chase them away as they continue to gain international recognition and draw attention to Korea’s entertainment industry. For now, congratulations to the group and its fan base on the most popular comeback yet!

”

meal, so don’t think that each of your Korean meal needs a lengthy procedure. Even with just some random vegetables resting in your refrigerator, you can finish a fine Korean dish with these simple and easy recipes.

Ingredients for 2 servings: 1 cup flour, 1 beaten egg, 1 cup water, sliced scallions as much as you would like, 1 teaspoon salt, a pinch of pepper, 3 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking) This Korean green onion pancake (Pa-Jun) recipe is easy to make and is always a big crowd-pleaser. It works as a hearty snack, an appetizer, or a side dish in a Korean or Asian dining. Pa-Jun works great with many different ingredients and even with different ratios of batter to scallions. First of all, after you gather all the ingredients, mix all ingredients and let sit for about 10 minutes. Check the consistency before cooking. The batter should be a little bit runnier than American pancake batter so that the Pa-Jun cooks evenly. Heat your pan over medium heat and coat it with a thin layer of olive oil. Pour batter to fill the pan in a thin layer and make sure to cook for 3 to 4 minutes until you see a golden brown color on the bottom. Serve with soy sauce or a spicy dipping sauce and ENJOY!

#2 Korean Egg Roll (Gaeran-Mari)

Ingredients for 2 servings: 3 eggs, ½ small finely chopped onion, ½ small finely chopped carrots, ½ small finely chopped green onions, 1 sheet of Korean roasted seaweed, 1 teaspoon salt with a dash of pepper This Korean rolled egg omelette (Gaeran-Mari) recipe is as easy to make as an American omelet, but it is an easy side dish for any meal. In a lightly greased pan, pour egg mixture and heat slowly over low heat. Continue heating slowly for 3 minutes until almost cooked, then place seaweed sheet on top of omelette. Roll omelette into a tight roll by lifting side with spoon or baking spatula. Let your Korean egg roll rest for a few minutes to cool down. When serving on a table, slice into 1-inch pieces and serve with cross-sections showing.

#3 Kimchi Fried Rice (Kimchi Bokumbap)

Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 cup kimchi, ½ finely chopped sweet onion, 1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic, 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon butter or oil, 1/3 cup finely chopped protein of your choice (beef, pork, chicken, spam), 3 cups cooked rice, 4 fried eggs Simple, easy, and quick to make, kimchi bokumbap is simple Korean home cooking for everyone. As we know, most Koreans enjoy kimchi every day of the year. It is rich in vitamins and minerals and makes for an extremely healthy food choice. First of all, on a lightly greased large pan, sauté kimchi and onion over medium heat for 3 minutes. Add garlic, soy sauce, and butter; sauté for another 3 minutes. Butter is an important ingredient because it creates both salty and sugary hint which makes the kimchi fried rice richer in flavor. Add your protein and continue to sauté until meat is fully cooked. Add the cooked rice and mix it well with rest of the ingredients. Salt to your own taste and top each serving with a sunny-side-up fried egg. By Rachel Y Cho
