An Interview with Assistant to the Principal, Tara Bell Have you ever heard of a stand-alone college and career preparedness facility accessible for high school students? The Cherry Creek Innovation Campus, the $60 million facility, offers pathways for students looking to learn a trade skill, rather than or in addition to attending a four-year college. Students can attend classes at the campus to work toward industry certifications while simultaneously earning high school and even college credit.

olorado Times visited this fascinating campus and had a scheduled interview with Assistant to the Principal, Tara Bell. “The Cherry Creek Innovation Campus (CCIC) provides courses that align with the industry standards for seven in-demand and growing career Pathways. In other words, students are put into work-based learning environments where they have opportunities to explore real-world skills, get high school and college credit, as well as industry certifications,” she said. In fact, whether students’ immediate post-high school plans include college, military, or entering work force, the CCIC offers a new kind of ‘bridge’ to college and successful careers.
The school offers seven pathways: IT and STEAM (a common acronym used to describe science, technology, engineering, arts and math), health and wellness, transportation, business services, hospitality and tourism, advanced manufacturing and infrastructure engineering. The following is a short description of each pathways (what students can expect to learn) that Tara kindly explained during our interview for this article.
1. Advanced Manufacturing Pathway
by giving students unique opportunities to be trained on manufacturing trends. Whether it be computer numerical control (CNC) manufacturing systems, materials processing, or precision measurement, students will be able to engage in hands-on learning experience with state-of-the-art CNC equipments including mills, lathe, water jets, routers, and plasma cutters. Advanced Manufacturing teaches fabrication, production, and machining and offers courses that can lead to NIMS certifications such as CAM, Machining, ITM, etc.

“Students attend the CCIC every other day during a morning or afternoon session. And most importantly, we provide transportation to and from each Cherry Creek School District high school.” Tara is devoted to enhance students’ accessibility to high quality education, where they can gain real-world skills not only from highly qualified teachers, but also by using state-of-the-art technology class settings. Thanks to Tara, Colorado Times witnessed each and every classroom and was very surprised to see most of the class settings closely resembling the real world - especially the ones equipped with high-technology devices, computers, and even robots. This state-of-the-art campus houses more than 1,000 students coming from all eight Cherry Creek High Schools.

2. Health & Wellness Pathway
Tara mentioned in an interview that Health & Wellness is definitely one of the most popular and growing in demand pathways. According to her, the Health & Wellness Pathway offers four program options: Behavioral Health Technician, Certified Nurse Aide (CNA), Physical & Occupational Therapy, and Pharmacy Technician. Whether a student’s focus is physical or occupational therapy, this pathway provides students opportunities to explore various Allied Health professions at the aide/technician level. Also, in these courses, students will meaningfully integrate their knowledge and skills with hands-on labs, authentic clinical settings, and industry-grade equipment.
5. Hospitality & Tourism Pathway
With a focus on leadership development, students in the Hospitality & Tourism pathway can develop the skills to manage, market, and operate foodservice establishments, hotels, and resorts. Whether through guest visits, site tours, or apprenticeships, students can learn diverse skills needed for the world of hospitality and tourism. At CCIC, students even develop their culinary skills in their classroom, which is equipped with industry-grade cooking equipment and cooking ingredients. Through this real-life experience, students can deepen their understanding of business operations and world-wide tourism.

3. Infrastructure Engineering Path- In a collaborative, startup-style learning environment, the Business Services Pathway way The Infrastructure Engineering classroom was truly amazing. From the real-life setting of the huge classroom to hands-on products which were mostly small rooms or even houses that students built, the environment vividly showed how students are taught and what they can expect to learn. Moreover, from the framing to the HVAC to the drywall, the Infrastructure Engineering pathway gives students a chance to explore several careers in building trades. With opportunities to operate cranes and/or forklifts, pour concrete, and framing buildings, students can get a chance to work with their hands and experience “on the job” training to build structures.
4.Transportation Pathway
The Transportation Pathway offers two programs: Automotive Technology and Aviation Maintenance. This pathway gives students a truly unique opportunity to get hands-on experience learning to inspect, service, and repair “actual” automobiles and aircrafts. From auto maintenance & light repair to aviation maintenance, students can get a precious experience that would last for a long time. Whether it be diving into the electrical circuits, tire alignments, and suspension repairs for cars or exploring the engine, landing gear, and hydraulic systems on airplanes, students will have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to build invaluable skills with industry-standard tools and equipment.

With a focus on building project management and leadership skills, students engage in digital marketing, customer relationship management, sales, and small business management projects.
7. IT & STEAM Pathway
The IT & STEAM Pathway offers two programs: Information Technology (IT), and STEAM. With CCIC’s state-of-the-art class equipment, students in the STEAM Pathway attend courses like Computer Aided Design, Drone Pilot, Product Design, Advance Robotics & Automated Systems, and even Virtual Reality. In other words, from virtual reality to cyber-security to robotics, the IT & STEAM Pathway gives students opportunities to use, learn, and create cutting edge technologies to tackle the challenges the future may bring. According to Tara, students actually learn skills to become ‘Ethical Hackers,’ using their own network in the specific classroom so that the entire school system does not get hacked. Through hands-on experiences, students can take ideas from conception to reality, learn to troubleshoot any kind of personal computing device or computer network, or build their own virtual reality environments.

“As you can see, our classrooms all have glass walls, which enable students to take a closer look at what other students are learning in the different pathways. This is highly motivating for them educationally because our school not only encourages students to indulge into a specific field, but also explore a new one if it interests them,” Tara said. cation is open. CCIC classes are for CCSD students who will be in the 10th, 11th or 12th grade during the 2020-2021 school year. In addition, some classes require completion of a prerequisite course. Monsta X Top 5 on Billboard 200 Chart
T
he Korean boy group, Monsta X, makes No. 5 in the Billboard top 200 charts with their new album - All About Luv. The group will perform with this same album in Colorado on June 29th. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. The rankings are based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. These units comprise of album sales, track equivalent albums, and streaming equivalent albums. The new chart with Monsta X's No. 5 placement will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Feb. 25. Monsta X's all-English album launched with 52,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. during the week ending Feb. 20, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. 50,000 of which are in album sales. All About Luv was released on Valentine’s Day as the vocal group’s first release for Epic Records since signing with the label in 2019. All About Luv’s first-week sales were bolstered by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer, dozens of merchandise/album bundles, in-store appearances during street week, and more than a dozen differ-
ent variants of the album available for fans to purchase (such as multiple CD editions, each with a different cover for one of the group’s members). While All About Luv is Monsta X’s first Billboard 200 entry, the act charted on other Billboard tallies since 2015 after it formed on a TV competition show in their home country that same year. Among those charting efforts were nine top 10s on the World Albums chart between 2016 and 2019 (all released via Starship
Entertainment). The World Albums chart ranks the week’s most popular albums in the U.S. that are, generally speaking, titles that contain native music or native-language music from countries outside the U.S. In comparison, the Billboard 200 includes all album sales in the U.S. Ranking in the top 5 of the charts is an incredible achievement for a K-pop group. Are you renting and would like one day to own your own single-family home? Are you planning to do that this year? Here are some facts based on ReColorado.com data: In the past 60 days, 68 homes sold priced from $231,000 (3 bedroom & 1 bath home with 854 square feet of finished area) to $1,632,940 (5 bedroom & 7 bath home with 5887 square feet of finished area). Thus, more than 1 home sold per day in the past 60 days. Currently, there are 41 active homes and 60 pending homes on the market. Thus, it will take less than 40 days before all the active homes will be gone. Historically, the average is between 120 days to 160 days on the market. Thus, if you are looking to buy a home in
Grandview High School Area, then you are probably going to see many homes with multiple offers if these homes are priced at market price or below market price. Simply put, you are in a “Seller’s Market”. So, how do you prepare for such a market if you still want to purchase a home this year? I would begin by getting your pre-approval in order. I would start with your REALTOR and ask him or her for their lending partners. Normally, REALTORs have access to many lending partners who can guide you in this competitive market. You would want to choose a lending partner regardless if they are a local bank, credit union, or mortgage broker, who can get the closing done on time. Your REALTORs could be a real asset for you in this regard since they have been working with these lenders for many deals and know which lenders may work best for your particular situation.
Anyway, I would probably not recommend working with a lending partner who has underwriters (loan decision-makers) who work in another state as they tend to cause delays in getting your loan approved. I would also advise you to get all your necessary paperwork into the lender even before looking at homes. Have the lending partner get you a “pre-approval” and make behave your loan go through the upfront approval process so that you can have a quick closing. This could be a difference between your offer and other offers that the seller will review. Of course, cash is King but still have the bank statements or proof of funds available before submitting your offer. Outbreak
in South Korea Just as the Diamond Princess cruise case settles, a COVID-19 outbreak puts South Korea on red alert. The number of confirmed cases in South Korea reached 602, as of February 23, 2020. Of these, 256 are new. Confirmed cases are increasing at an alarming speed. The sudden outbreak is mainly in Daegu among members of Shincheonji. Shincheonji is an infamous cult in South Korea, raising concern about the outbreak's containment.
Updated Statistics on the COVID-19 There are 78,811 confirmed cases globally, 1,017 of which confirmed within the last 24 hours. Cases confirmed outside of China total 1,769 with 17 deaths. The risk remains high globally, but those at the highest risk are the elderly, babies, and immune-deficient individuals. The confirmed cases in the U.S. rose to 35 from 15 on February 22, 2020. There have been no more increases to confirmed cases in the U.S. within the last 24 hours. The countries with the most increased confirmed cases are China, South Korea, Italy, and Japan in that order. The increase in South Korea and Italy are of particular concern and are under the careful watch of local authorities. Shincheonji The Shincheonji sect has a bad reputation in South Korea for its aggressive recruitment and the intense dedication of its members. Mainstream religions in South Korea label the Shincheonji sect as a cult and warns Shincheonji members not to infiltrate mainstream churches. Hundreds of the recently reported cases of COVID-19 are members of the
Shincheonji sect. The outbreak within this particular sect's members concerns health officials in South Korea. The bad reputation of the Shincheonji sect causes many members to hide their affiliation. While local authorities continue to search for members and scan for symptoms, there are over 700 members that have not been found, as of February 22, 2020. The Shincheonji member's dedication to recruitment is also of great concern to health officials. One particular patient slipped out of the hospital on two Sundays to attend crowded services without using a mask. Officials stated that over 1,000 Shincheonji members attended at least one of these services. While the rise of confirmed cases is concerning, Colorado Times encourages its readership not to panic as the disease is not deadly to most people. However, if you or a loved one shows symptoms of the COVID-19, it is recommended that you visit a hospital to prevent the virus from spreading to vulnerable individuals. President Trump’s Criticisms on “Parasite” in the Views of a Korean American.
O
n Thursday, February 20, President Trump criticized the movie, “Parasite” directed by Bong Joon Ho. President Trump responded to the first non-English movie to win the highest award at the Oscars to a cheering crowd by saying this, “The winner is a movie from South Korea. What the hell was that all about? We’ve got enough problems with South Korea, with trade. And, after all that, they give them the best movie of the year?” To add on to these remarks, this Friday he added onto his statements at his Las Vegas rally. “Look I get along great with South Korea, but I’ve never seen that movie before, they used to call it ‘the best foreign movie’. Now we do it that way,” he continued to attack “Parasite” and the fact that it won instead of an ‘American’ film. In response, the movie studio behind “Parasite”, Neon, tweeted this, “Understandable he can’t read.”
My Opinion as a Korean American I grew up in America, but at home, I was raised very traditionally Korean. I identify with my Korean heritage than the country that I was born in. Coming from this background, I found that one of the best parts of our country is the amount of variety you see in the people around us. We all build this country together. I can understand the controversy of a South Korean movie winning at an
American film award ceremony. However, I can say without a doubt in my mind that Korea and Korean immigrants have a large part in our country's culture, especially with the increasing popularity of K-pop. America has more immigrants than any country in the world, and among immigrant arrivals, Asian immigrants outnumber Hispanic immigrants in recent years, according to the Pew Research Center.
With this data, you could include that in the future there will be an influx of second-generation Asians that will contribute to America’s economy and society. Even now, there are a lot of second-generation immigrants that vote and participate in government activities. Many of these people feel very connected to their home heritage and still have deep roots with where they are from. It is impossible to separate America from the multiple cultures that are represented within it. Embracing the culture of America requires you to embrace the cultures that it is comprised of. A part of American culture that I feel was not well represented by Trump's recent commentary on "Parasite." As a young Korean American, I feel proud. I feel proud that South Korean culture is sweeping the globe. It gives us Korean Americans a way to connect and express our culture. BTS is Back ‘Map of the Soul: 7’ sweeps the BTS storm worldwide
BTS is officially back. Their highlyanticipated album ‘Map of the Soul: 7’ finally dropped on February 21st and it has dominated news cycles and broken pre-sale records. BTS fans, or the “Army,” are thrilled at the return of the group. Within an hour of the announcement of their comeback, the global fanbase generated millions of trending hashtags on Twitter, including #7isComing and #BTSisComing. For some, the excitement expanded past the album, and celebrated the hiatus. In the span of less than a week, BTS made history twice: first the Recording Industry Association of America(RIAA) announced that BTS’s 2018 album ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ was certified platinum. This made it the first Korean album to ever be recognized by the organization. For an album to achieve a platinum cer-
tification, it must record at least 1 million units in the U.S. A unit is equal to one album sale, 1,500 audio or video streams from the album, or 10 tracks sold from the album. Their new album ‘Map of the Soul: 7’ has already shown signs of making another global megahit after BTS clinched three No.1s on the Billboard 200 album chart within a span of one year, rewriting Billboard history. The new album’s title track “On” has already hit 80,575,946 views ready to rock the world music scene once again. This album is the second part of its ‘Map of the Soul’ album series, following ‘Map of the Soul: Persona,’ released in April last year. Like its predecessor, ‘7’ is a soul-searching musical journey, focused on facing up and embracing the shadows as well as the glories of the band’s eventful seven-year band career. The
lead track “On” is a powerful and captivating hip hop number, which parallels “N.O,” the lead track of the band’s first EP, released in September 2013, just three months after the band’s debut. In the music video, labeled as “Kinetic Manifesto Film : Come Prima,” a dazzling visual rendering of the new song. A team of approximately 30 dancers and marching band members help put on a majestic dance performance – which is BTS’s strength in most of their music videos – of the song against the background of an outdoor scene. “On” primarily explores BTS’s devotion and sense of being artists, developed and refined through the band’s seven-year history. The song poetically calls the double-edged quality of the band’s stardom and global musical career as “a beautiful prison into which I walked into with my own feet.” Of course, the new album’s other tracks
also made it to the top 10 lists of all the Korean music charts, taking them by storm. “It’s like a d eclaration that we have admitted our destiny,” member RM said. Looking back on the group’s musical journey so far, he said “We did expand our musical expanse and everything has been up-scaled… so everything got bigger and happier.” Member Jimin also said the Army may feel proud of themselves, knowing that “On” depicts the critical moments BTS shared with the fans. “It’s our comeback after 10 months. We spent a record length of time on the preparation and practiced for the longest time.” Following the TV appearance in the U.S., the band will then fly back to Seoul to host a global press conference in the South Korean capital on Monday.
