̒Parasite̓Makes History Yet Again The First Best Picture Oscar Awarded to a Non-English Film
"Parasite" is now the first non-English film to win the Best Picture Oscar! During the award ceremony on February 2, 2020, Director Bong Joon-ho stated via the translator, Choi, “Writing a script is always such a lonely process; we never write to represent our countries.” He then added in English: “But this is [the] very first Oscar to South Korea.” After the Best Picture win, Bong ceded the stage to Kwak Sin Ae, his co-producer. “We never imagined this to ever happen. We are so happy.” She said via Choi. “I feel like a very opportune moment in history is happening right now.”

he 2019 South Korean thriller and comedy film stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-Kyun, Cho Yeo-Jeong, Choi Woo-Shik, and Park So-dam. The popular film follows the story of a poor household scheming to be employed by a much wealthier family by posing as unrelated, highly qualified individuals. This film made international history on Sunday, February 2, 2020, as the very first non-English film to win the Best Picture category at the Oscar awards. "Parasite" won four categories
at the Oscar Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Original Screenplay. Koreans and Korean Americans are celebrating the awards. As the winner of the Best Foreign Language Film category, it joins films such as Spain’s “Pain and Glory" and France’s “Les Misérables.” The Oscar Awards, however, are not "Parasite's" only achievements. The film has garnered international interest and attention from its release in 2019. On January 4th, the American film critic organization convened in New York City to vote for its annual awards - one of the most prestigious film critic awards in the United States. “Parasite” emerged triumphant as the winner of both Best Picture and Best Screenplay awards. It was also the first Korean movie to be named Best Picture by the National Society of Film Critics. At the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, "Parasite" became the first Korean movie to win the Palme d’Or. It made history as the first Korean film ever to be nominated for three Golden Globe Awards. At the 77th Golden Globe Awards, on Jan. 5th,
"Parasite" won the Foreign Language Film award. These awards only grant a peek at the history-making film's achievements. The film's achievements contribute not only to Korea's recognition but also to Korean individuals alike. Korean American actors and actresses seem especially excited for a better chance to

Will Korean Consulate Office Open in Aurora? City of Aurora Strives to Improve People’s Quality of Life

appened just last week on February 6th Thursday, there was an important meeting between the mayor of city of Aurora, Mike Coffman, and the leaders of Korean community at the City Hall of Aurora. The invitation was specifically from the mayor’s office, and every participant gladly joined the discussion for the City of Aurora’s grand project. Lunch was served – Vons Chicken – and everyone enjoyed the crispness and variety of Vons Chicken’s Korean flavors. Located at the gateway to the beautiful Rocky Mountains, home to innovation and diverse industries with access to the world by way of our proud international airport, the city of Aurora is clearly at the center of it all. With more than approximately 41,000 Korean residing in the state of Colorado, there has been a great need of Korean Consulate office in the city of Aurora. Every time our residents need to take care of governmental documents or immigration related tasks, they have to travel all the way to either east coast or west coast. It costs them immense time, flight fee, hotel fee and much more. However, since recently, the city of Aurora has been taking its greatest effort to establish the Korean consulate office
by working closely with the Korean government to develop the business model, rollout plan, and timeline. As 1 of 10 cities in the United States with an Immigrant Integration plan, the City of Aurora is committed to a successful integration of the Korean Community alongside our diverse immigrant population. With over approximately 320 Korean-owned businesses in Aurora alone, Aurora has significant ly more Korean-owned businesses in
comparison to surrounding cities and states in the region. As the mayor and his team strive to establish the Korean Consulate in order to ultimately improve Korean residents’ quality of life, this project’s future is very bright. “As we progress to receive more letters of support from various voices of the Korean community, I would also like to pursue meetings with important community leaders like Christopher Hill, the current dean of the
Josef Korbel School of International Studies and former U.S. ambassador in South Korea, to give us support to convince the Korean government,” the mayor mentioned in his speech. “Let us make the newest home of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Aurora, Colorado to serve the Rocky Mountain region better and work with our partners to improve Korean community’s quality of life,” he encouraged By Rachel Y Cho the whole room.

The Coronavirus, and the Xenophobia that comes with it The Coronavirus outbreak has created a wave of anxiety for people on a global scale. There have been over 40,000 confirmed cases of the virus and a death count of over 900. At the end of last month, a tweet went viral. The tweet was a response to an Instagram post, UC Berkley made about common reactions to the coronavirus. The now-deleted Instagram post stated that Xenophobia was a “common” and “normal” reaction to the Coronavirus. Xenophobia is prejudice against or dislike of people from different countries. But, this isn’t anything new. Stereotypes against Asians have been reenforced and practiced over decades. Such as the Chinese Exclusion Act, signed by President Chester A. Arthur, which banned the immigration of Chinese laborers for 10 years. Many stories of racism and bigotry are now being uncovered under the guise of ‘concern for the coronavirus’. Business Insider Reporter Sarah AlArshani reported an 8-year-old child being told to “go away” because the worker didn’t want to get the Coronavirus. The father of the child, Devin
Cabanilla, said that his boy was “focused on how he looked” and that he wondered is it is because of the way his mother looked. His mother is KoreanAmerican and Devin is from many ethnic backgrounds. Even in Europe, La Republicca reported that the Director of Rome’s esteemed Santa Cecilia music conservatory suspended lessons from all “oriental students (Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc)”, and most of these students are second-generation students that have no relationship with their mother country. One of the more shocking stories come from Australia, a 60-year-old man was left to die on the pavement from a heart attack because bystanders were too afraid to give him CPR. Located in a district in Chinatown, onlookers were afraid of getting the virus, therefore they refused to resuscitate the man. There is also a question of whether it is bigoted to focus solely on the bad Western reactions. For instance, when Ebola happened, people all over the world were doing the same with people who were of African descent. People who have never even stepped foot in Africa were being attacked for having Ebola when in reality, there was
no risk. Adding on to Wuhan, citizens of the city have been ostracized not only internationally, but in China as well. Other Asian countries have done the same, and it begs the question, how do we redirect the focus to the victims and the people in need? In Wuhan and a lot of mainland China, the situation is alarming. In response to the virus, the Chinese government has put many cities in quarantine, and The World Health Organization has declared the Coronavirus an international public health emergency. It has officially killed more people than the 2003 SARS pandemic, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

As more and more time goes by Asian Americans have been speaking up about these microaggressions and sometimes even blatant acts of racism and Xenophobia. As the virus spreads further, The National Health Commission has announced a temporary official name for the virus, Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia. One thing people can do to help is to donate to organizations that provide masks and medical supplies o the areas affected, and when bystanders see or hear xenophobic things, they should make sure to inform and to correct any misleading facts. At times like this, it is important for people to stick together, regardless of nationality or race. For now, however, Wuhan has announced that they have built a new hospital and are doing everything they can to fight the virus.

A Detailed Look at 'Highland Ranch' Single Family Home Market for 2020 Dear Real Estate Column Readers, Hot! Hot! Hot! The single-family homes priced around $300,000 to $600,000 in Highlands Ranch seems to be on FIRE! My buyer clients have lost out on getting 2 homes under contract in the past month. The first home was priced around $500,000. Our offer was above asking price by $12,000 but our offer was rejected. There were around 5 competing offers. The next home my buyers decided to submit an offer on was not much different. It was listed at $470,000 and we were competing with a similar amount of offers and although our offer was $10,000 higher than the asking price, it was not high enough to even be considered as a back-up offer. It could have been that the above two listings were priced under the market and drew an overwhelming response from potential buyers in the market-
place. Either way, I want to dig a little deeper and see what the Highlands Ranch detailed data looks life. The data I used is from ReColorado. com. These are data based on homes (Single Family) priced from $300,000 to $600,000 in the city of Highlands Ranch.
▶Close Price to List Price Ratio: 99.1% (Jan/2020) ▶Active Listings: 48 (Jan/2020) ▶Median Closed Price: $465,000 (Jan/2020). This is an increase of $20,000 (up 4.3% from Jan/2019)
▶Number of Sales (Jan/2020) $300,000 to $400,000: 3 (only three!) ▶Number of Sales (Jan/2020) $400,000 to $500,000: 44 (A lot in this price range) ▶Number of Sales (Jan/2020) $500,000 to $600,000: 14 ▶List Price/Living Area (Fin Sq. Ft) Ration: $225 (Jan/2020). Last year was $215 (Jan/2019)
In summary, it looks like most activities are in a $400,000 to $500,000 price range. Thus, the competition would be fiercer in this price range. Maybe I should encourage my buyer clients
to look at $500,000+ listings. It looks like prices are on its way up this year at around 4 to 5% increase from last year. If last year is a good indication, then the highest Living Area (Fin Sqft) Ratio could potentially hit $253. I don’t have the crystal ball and world events; i.e., coronavirus or a sudden change to the interest rates (we are at historic lows at this time) could alter my prediction. Anyway, if you are in the market to buy a home in Highlands Ranch or other similarly hot real estate markets, then I would say be prepared and have your loan fully pre-approved before submitting an offer in and you would need to have a lot of patience as your offer may not get accepted at the 1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd try. Update on the Novel Corona Virus (2019-nCoV) The Novel Corona Virus remains at a high-risk level globally. The most recent situation report by the World Health Organization (WHO) confirms 37,558 cases worldwide. While 37,251 of these cases remain in China, there are 307 cases outside of China. Many Korean entertainment events have been canceled or postponed in order to prevent further spread of the virus including Winner's Singapore concert, AKMU concerts, ASTRO's fan meeting, and the Manila Running Man Fan Meeting.
The Situation of the Cruise Ship Diamond Princess On February 9, the Japanese National Health Authorities provided WHO with an update on the situation of the Cruise Ship Diamond Princess, currently located in Yokohama, Japan. After the confirmation of a 2019-nCoV case, all crew and passengers are in quarantine for 14 days onboard the vessel. They are to stay in their cabins, as much as possible, and wear a mask when leaving their cabin. All crew and passengers were medically examined and tested for 2019-nCoV when displaying any signs or symptoms suggestive of 2019nCoV disease. The quarantine period will come to an end on February 19. Epidemiological and environmental investigations are ongoing. As of February 8, 64 individuals were found to have been infected with 2019-nCoV among passengers and crew members. All individuals testing positive were admitted in infectious disease hospitals in the Yokohama area. Close contacts of the infected passengers are asked to remain in quarantine for 14 days from the last contact with a confirmed case.
Updated Statistics of the Novel Corona Virus There are 37,251 confirmed cases in China with 2,657 newly confirmed within the last 24 hours. Of these, 6,188 are severe and 812 led to death. There are 307 confirmed cases outside of China with 19 newly confirmed within the last 24 hours. Only one of these cases has led to death. Cases are confirmed in 25 different countries, including China. For a complete list of countries with confirmed cases, please see the graph and table.
