The new decade welcomes a chilly January that blows by with speed. Be careful not to miss these fun events while hiding away from the cold! Colorado is known for its snow-covered mountains that encourage winter activities and sports. This year we invite artisans and athletes from all around the world to join in the winter fun. From snow sculpting to ice climbing and snowboarding, stunning competitions are waiting for us this weekend.
Colorado International Winter Competitions X Games, Breckenridge Snow Sculpting, & Ouray Ice Festival 2020 X Games The 19th X Games brings the world's best winter athletes to Aspen's Buttermilk Mountain once again. There will be competitions for ski, snowboard, and snowmobile. ESPN first hosted the competition in 1997, and winter X Games continues to be a highly popular event. The event will start on Thursday (Jan 23) and end on Sunday (Jan 26). It is completely free to watch. The competition is located outside on the snow-covered mountains. The following is a list of some competitions held at the 2020 X Games. •Ski/Snowboard X •Ski/Snowboard SuperPipe •Ski/Snowboard Big Air •Ski/Snowboard Slopestyle •Snowmobile Freestyle •Snowmobile Speed & Style •Snowmobile Best Trick •SnoCross You can find the full schedule on http:// www.xgames.com/events/2020/aspen/ schedule/. There is more to the X Games than just competition, however. There will be live music and concerts in addition to four themed villages. The impressive list of artists includes Rae Sremmurd, Illenium, Alesso, and Bazzi. For hardcore winter games fans, there is the Major League Gaming X Games Invitational and the athlete signings and giveaways. The additional activities do require a separate purchase fee. Even if the cold and
prices keep you from going out, you can catch the event live on ESPN and ABC. 30th Breckenridge International Snow Sculpture Champions Sixteen teams from all around the world gather to showcase their skills in snow and ice. The teams: Argentina, China, Ecuador, France-Normandie, Germany, Great Britain, India, Mexico, Mongolia, Switzerland, Turkey, and various USA teams including our very own USA-Breckenridge team. The competitors must carve 20-ton blocks of snow into masterpieces completely by HAND. No machines, power tools, or fairy godmothers are allowed to assist the artisans in their pieces. They labor for five days (~96 hours) before revealing their art for judging. The event is free, but only available until the event site closes. Sculptures will only remain until the end of the last day. Make sure to catch a glimpse of these handmade wonders! Especially at night, when lights accentuate their features. The event begins with the first day of sculpting on January 20 and continues until January 19. Visitors can view the sculptures after January 24, once they are completed and voted on. 25th Ouray Ice Festival The Ouray Ice Festival hailed as the largest ice climbing event on the continent is back for its 25th year. world The exciting festival stretches over 3 days and 4 nights from January 23 to January 26 at the Ouray Ice Park. The competitors are selected by the Ouray Ice Park Board of Directors based on qualification and experience. However, there are over 100 interactive climbing clinics for every novice and pro to enjoy. While these clinics do charge a fee, watching and cheering at the competition comes at 0 cost. While New Year's celebrations have long past in America, Korea's New Year celebration is yet to begin. Korean New Year, or Seollal (설날), is the first day of year according to the lunar calendar. This year, it lands on January 25, 2020. As one of the most important holidays in Korea, the celebration usually lasts three days. It is a tradition to visit family during this time. Some even fly from overseas to be with family. Other than enjoying great company and food, many culturally rich traditions are at the core of this holiday. From traditional clothing and games to ancestral rites and bows, the Korean New Year activities rarely change from family to family. The Korean New Year celebrates the past and wishes for a blessed next year.
Zodiac Much like the Chinese Zodiac, Korea assigns a Zodiac to each year for a twelve-year cycle. The twelve Zodiac include the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. 2020 is the year of the rat! According to folktales, a competition decided the order of the animals. The rat was the first to arrive by riding the ox's head. They say it is ideal to begin something new during the year of the rat. Encouraging any who hope to get married or begin a new career! Additionally, it is said those who are born in the year of the rat are insightful, sociable, and ambitious. Rat years include 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, and 2020. Traditional Activities Charye is an ancestral ritual performed during the Korean New Year. A small table full of food including Korean
