Inmodernnarratology, anachrony referstoadiscrepancybetweenthechronologicalorderofevents andtheorderinwhichtheyarepresented.Storytellersoften employthistechniquetoaddintrigue and complexity, mirroring the experience of fragmented memory, shifting consciousness, or recollection out of sequence. As part of the graduate wind conducting program at Colorado State University,studentsarechallengedtodesignachamberconcertthatreflectsdifferenterasofthewind ensembletradition.Theseperformancesmayfeatureworksrangingfromtheeighteenthcenturyto themodern era, performed inanysequenceattheconductor’sdiscretion. Eachstudentcuratesthe orderbasedonpacing,thematicrelationships,orhistoricalchronology. Inthisconcert,notonlyare theworkspresented anachronistically,buttheyalsoexploretheveryideaoftemporaldisplacement.

Unlikemanynotablecomposers,JohnMackeycametomusicwithoutformalinstrumentaltraining. His earliestcompositions werenotborn from apianokeyboard or aconductor’s podium,butfrom theglowofacomputerscreen.UsingtheearlydigitalnotationsoftwareMusicConstructionSetand studyingmusictheoryfromhismother’soldtextbooks,Mackeydiscoveredadistinctcreativevoice ForMackey,thecomputerbecamehisinstrument,themeansthroughwhichrhythmandcolorcould comealive.ThisunconventionalpathledhimtotheClevelandInstituteofMusic,whereheearnedhis Bachelor of FineArts degreein thespring of 1995 under thementorship of composer Donald Erb. Upon completing his undergraduate degree, he began graduate study at The Juilliard School with Pulitzer Prize–winning composer John Corigliano, graduating with a Master of Music degree in composition. Since the breakout success of his first wind ensemble work, Redline Tango, he has become one of the most influential composers for the medium. Heavily influenced by his love of progressiverock,hismusicisdiscerniblebyitsdrivingrhythms,harmonictension,andanundeniable senseofenergy.
JohnMackey’s Fanfare for Full Fathom Five highlightsthedefiningelementsofhiscompositionalstyle throughthecommandingsoundofthebrassensemble.InspiredbythescaleandgrandeurofRichard Strauss’s Wiener Philharmoniker Fanfare, Mackey uses the ensemble’s power and depth to portray thestoryofShakespeare’s The Tempest. ThetitlereferencesAriel’ssong,whichdescribesadrowning andtransformationbeneaththewaves:
Full fathom five thy father lies; Of his bones are coral made; Those are pearls that were his eyes; Nothing of him that doth fade, But doth suffer a sea-change Into something rich and strange.
Theworkguideslistenersthroughdarkandshiftingwatersusingunstablechromaticism,trombone glissandi,andanevolvingharmoniccenter.BeginninginB-flatmajor,themusicdriftsthroughD-flat, G-flat, and E major tonal centers before reaching a powerful conclusion in E-flat major. These
harmonic shifts create a sense of displacement, sinking through unstable waters before finally arrivingattheshore,assuredofdefinitesuccess.

Franz Schubert’s Octet in F Major stands as both a product of its time and a fragment suspended outside of it. Left unfinished at the composer’s death, the work captures a moment of artistic becoming,aglimpseofwhatmighthavebeen,preservedinmusicalamber. Thoughhelivedonlyto the age of thirty-one, Schubert’s influence on Western music far exceeded his brief lifetime. By his death,morethanonehundredworkshadbeenpublishedunderhisname,nearlytwicethenumber publishedbyBeethovenduringhisentirelife.UnlikeBeethoven,however,Schubertrarelyheardhis instrumentalmusicperformed;audiences of his timeknewhim primarilyfor his lieder, or German art songs, of which he wrote over six hundred. His mastery of melody, harmonic color, and poetic expressioncontinuestodefinehislegacy.
AnativeofVienna,Schubertwasshapedbythecity’sdeepmusicaltradition.Fromanearlyage, he absorbed the styles of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, whose influence is evident in his earliest compositions,somewrittenasearlyas1809,whenhewasjusttwelveyearsoldandbeginningformal studies at the Imperial and Royal City College (Kaiserlich-konigliches Stadtkonvikt). During this formative period, he produced numerous sketches and chamber works, experimenting with both instrumentalcolorandclassicalstructure.ItwasinhisfinalyearasastudentthatSchubertbeganhis Octet in F Major forwinds.Onlytwomovementsareknowntobecompleted,withfragmentsofathird discoveredwhentheworkwaspublishedposthumouslyin1889.Unlikehismaturesongs,thisearly octetadherescloselytoclassicalform,revealingayoungcomposerstillfindinghisvoice.Yetevenin itsincompleteness,theworkoffersapoignantreflectionofanachronyitself:musicdisplacedintime, existing between potential and remembrance, and forever echoing the unfinished beauty of Schubert’sart.

Charles Gounod was oneoftheleading Frenchcomposers ofthenineteenthcentury, known for his lyricism, clarity, and elegantcraftsmanship. Asayoung man,hestudied harmonyandcounterpoint withAntoineReichabeforeenteringtheParisConservatory.In1837,heearnedsecondplaceinthe PrixdeRomecompetitionandwonthecovetedprizetwoyearslater,grantinghimtheopportunityto studyinRome,Austria,andGermany.Duringthisperiod,hemetFelixMendelssohn,whoseinfluence leftalastingmarkonhiscompositionalvoice.
Gounod’s early life was closely tied to the church his mother arranged a position for him as an organist in 1843, and for a time he seriously considered entering the priesthood. This spiritual connectionremainedcentralthroughouthiscareer,inspiringmorethantwentymassesandoverfifty othersacredworks.Yetitwasthroughoperathatheachievedlastingfameinthe1850s,with Faust (1859)standingashismostcelebratedachievement.Healsowrotethe Funeral March of a Marionette, later made famous as the theme to Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and contributed greatly to the developmentoftheFrench mélodie.MauriceRavelwouldlatercallGounod“thetruefounder”ofthat genre,recognizinghisgiftformelodyandharmonicnuancereminiscentofSchubert’s lieder.
Gounod’s Petite Symphonie,composedin1885,reflectshisneoclassicalsensibilitiesandhisresistance tothegrandioseRomanticismofWagner.Scored forwindsandflutesolo,thefour-movementwork recallstheHarmoniemusikofeighteenth-centuryVienna,thecourtlychambermusicofMozartand Beethoven,yetitinfusesthattraditionwithadistinctlyFrenchelegance.Byembracingrestraintand clarityoverexcessanddrama,Gounodcreateda“smallsymphony”thatservesasbothhomageand commentary:agracefultimecapsuleofClassicalformreimaginedthroughanineteenth-centurylens.

His works range from solo pieces to full orchestral compositions and have been performed by leading ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic,theNationalSymphonyOrchestra,theShanghaiSymphony,andtheOregonSymphony, wherehehasservedascomposer-in-residencesince2023.Akiho’sprolificoutputincludesnineteen soloworks,twenty-sevenchamberpieces,oneforwindensemble,andelevenfororchestra.Athreetime Grammy nominee for Best Contemporary Classical Composition (2022–2024) and a Pulitzer Prizefinalistfor his Seven Pillars (2022),Akihois recognized as oneof themostdynamicvoices in contemporary music. Asapercussionist,Akihobringsavisceral,physicalqualitytohiswriting.Hismusicoftenfeaturesthe steel pan, prepared percussion, and found objects, blending theatricality with sound in fresh and unexpectedways.His2008workto wALk Or ruN in wEst harlem fusesthesepercussiveinnovations within theinstrumentation of thePierrotensemble, twostrings,twowinds,piano, and percussion, anensemblefirstusedinSchoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire (1912).Highlypercussiveanddeeplypersonal, to wALk Or ruN in wEst harlem unfolds as afragmented memory, inspired byarealeventin which Akihowasstabbedandmugged.Thecomposerdescribesthepieceasanonlinearnarrative,shifting between flashes of recollection and disjointed emotion. The opening attack symbolizes the initial violence, followed by sonic impressions of chaos, rushing footsteps, slamming car doors, and the distant wail of sirens. Through its disordered chronology and vivid sonorities, the work embodies anachronyinitspurestsense:areconstructionoftimethroughsound,wheretrauma,memory,and rhythmintertwine.

Cameron Honnen, anative of Grand Junction (Colorado), currently serves as a graduate teaching assistant for Colorado State University’s comprehensive band program. As part of his masters in musicdegree(conducting), Mr. Honnen is aguestconductorwith theWindSymphony, Symphonic Band,andConcertBand.HisconductingteachersincludeDr.RebeccaPhillips,Dr.CalvinHofer,and Dr.JonathanHinkle.OtherCSUGTAresponsibilitiesincludesupportingtheathleticbands,including theCSUMarchingBand,PresidentialPepBand,andtheRampageBasketballBand,andmanagingthe CSUSymphonicBand.
Mr.HonnenearnedaBachelorofMusicEducationdegreefromColoradoMesaUniversity(CMU)in 2017,graduatingwithhonors.AtCMU,heplayedbasstrombone,tenortrombone,andeuphoniumin severalensembles,includingtheWindSymphony,JazzEnsemble,SymphonyOrchestra,12thStreet BrassQuintet,andvariousjazzcombos.HewasalsoafoundingmemberoftheMaverickStampede Marching Band and the Rowdy Brass Band, serving in leadership roles as visual captain, music captain,anddrummajor.In2016,hereceivedtheOutstandingLeadershipandTrailblazerawards. Upongraduation,Mr.HonnentaughtforsevenyearsinwesternColorado,firstasDirectorofBands at West Middle School (Grand Junction) for four years and then as Director of Bands (Fruita 8/9 MiddleSchool)andAssistantDirectorofBandsatFruitaMonumentHighSchoolforthreeyears.His programs included multiple concert bands, jazz ensembles, chamber groups, and marching bands. Underhisleadership,groupsconsistentlyearnedSuperiorandExcellentratingsatfestivalsandtwice receivedthe"ExemplaryBand"designationfromtheColoradoBandmastersAssociation(CBA).Inhis firstyearofteaching,hewashonoredwiththeCBAExceptionalYoungEducatorsAward.
Apassionatemarchingbandenthusiast,Mr.Honnenhasbeeninvolvedinthemarchingartssincethe ageoffifteen.HespentsixyearswiththeTroopersDrum&BugleCorps,fiveasaeuphoniumplayer, sectionleader,andhornsergeant,andhisfinalyearasadrummajor.Inrecognitionofhisleadership, he received the Jim Jones Leadership Award. Since 2017, Mr. Honnenhas also taught and assisted withseveralhighschoolmarchingbandsandtwoworld-classdrumcorps.Hisguidancehelpedthe FruitaMonument High SchoolWildcatBand becomeafinalistfor seven consecutiveyears, and his instruction contributed to the Troopers' strong competitive showings in 2024 and 2025. As an adjudicator, Cameron has judged marching band competitions in the Rocky Mountain region, includingcompetitionsinColorado,Wyoming,andIdaho.
Mr.Honnenisanaccomplishedbasstrombonist.HehasstudiedwithDr.SeanFlaniganandDr.Drew Leslie. He performed with the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra, Western Slope Jazz Orchestra, and ClarkGault’s SwingCityExpress. Healso played onnationaltoursforFelixCavaliere’s Rascals andtheCanadianBrass.HeiscurrentlyamemberoftheCSUJazzEnsembleI,trombonestudio,and trombone choir. Mr. Honnen is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the National Band Association, the College Band Directors National Association, Phi Beta Mu, and the ColoradoBandmastersAssociation.
