FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT Dear CMC Members: It is an honor to be your new CMC President. While COVID-19 has brought us a new set of challenges, I remain confident about the Club’s future, and I am fortunate to work with a State Board with wide-ranging skills and talents. When the outbreak began in spring 2020 and the economy began to free fall, we were not sure how the Club would manage. I’m happy to report that, eighteen months later, we are stronger and more resilient than ever. Still, it has been a tough couple of years, and we are looking at another challenging few months ahead. We continue to navigate legal issues related to the crimes of Chun Chiang. Our 2020 revenue alone dropped by nearly 30 percent, attributable in part to the loss of school and youth education revenue as well as our adventure travel programming. We received two sizable federal PPP loans, most or all of which will be forgiven, and a number of smaller grants. We also received a significant EIDL loan with favorable terms. Our summer 2020 appeal raised over $65,000—more than $50,000 over a typical summer appeal. This has kept us afloat. Unfortunately, we had to make some hard financial decisions in 2020, including a reduction in schedules for staff by 20 percent as well as other measures. It continually amazes me how Executive Director Keegan Young and our staff have stepped up to meet the daunting tasks of keeping the Club alive and financially intact. They have skillfully controlled and reduced expenses. They continue to keep our members engaged through online classes, the CMC Online University, press sales, and a resumption of wilderness first aid classes in both hybrid and in-person formats. Incredibly, our membership has grown over the past two years. We are all excited for the Club as we return to the wide offerings of the CMC, including trips, schools and adult education, Youth Education Program, conservation, and social activities – albeit with certain COVID-19 restrictions in place as we recreate and educate safely with the pandemic remaining a part of our lives. I hope you have had the opportunity to read our 2025 Strategic Plan, which was developed from the ground up, with (or by) our members. We traveled the state and listened to what you wanted from the Club. Now, the Strategic Plan is driving the CMC State Board of Directors’ actions. We are focused on a OneCMC approach to align our regional groups, as well as recognize the unique culture of each group. We are also working to increase the number of trip leaders with greater training and support, expand our activities, grow financial stability through broader individual donations and corporate sponsorships, and fashion the CMC brand around our mission and values. The bottom line: the Club is not going anywhere. We look forward to being Colorado’s major outdoor recreation source for the next 109 years, and I look forward to being part of that journey. THE CMC + COVID With more than a century of colorful history under our belts, the CMC has weathered big storms before. Our members have supported us during world wars, the Great Depression, and even another pandemic way back in 1918. Through it all, members have been the lifeblood of our organization, and they showed up in unprecedented ways during the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020. Donors contributed more than $65,000—the most successful fundraising campaign in our 109-year history—in summer 2020, and we’re thrilled to report that our membership has remained steady despite the recession. COVID also required CMC staff and volunteer leaders to find creative ways to build community, such as the new CMC Online University, Strava Club, and virtual CMC Press events. As we prepare to take on 2022 and beyond, we’re more grateful than ever for our mountain community. 2
