Littleton city officials stepped up their efforts to build support for a slate of potential budget fixes on June 8, speaking to a packed house of civic and business leaders about the dire state of the city’s capital projects fund. The city faces a “critical point” if budget issues aren’t addressed, City Manager Mark Relph told more than 120 attendees at a State of the City address, a $30-a-plate gathering at the Ashley Ridge event center in south Littleton. Without new sources of revenue for the capital projects fund, which finances infrastructure, Littleton could be “faced with a slow degradation of our quality of life,” Relph said. “The city won’t be in a position to address the impacts of growth ... We can’t let it sit this way.” The capital projects fund, which draws most of its money from gasoline taxes, building fees, and a regular infusion of cash earmarked for road repairs, is currently projected to run dry by 2025, finance director Tiffany Hooten told the crowd. After Jack Padilla, a freshman at Cherry Creek High School, took his own life in February 2019, his father, Rick Padilla, made it his mission to make a difference in the lives of youths who face mental health challenges. Along with experiencing depression, Jack Padilla had dealt with bullying at school and on social media. In western Colorado, a Montrose teenager named Caitlyn Haynes died by suicide in 2015. She, too, experienced bullying. Both teens’ families pushed for a bill in the state Legislature called “Jack and Cait’s Law,” a proposal that hopes to change how schools address bullying. On June 7, Gov. Jared Polis signed the bill in a ceremony with the Padilla and Haynes families standing alongside him. The families were “trying to make meaning of tragedy and difficulty,” and they turned their loss into an effort that can help others, Polis said at the ceremony. The Colorado Department of Education had already written a “model bullying prevention and education policy” in recent years to provide guidance to school districts developing their own bullying prevention policies. el policy was not required to be adopted by any local education agency — rather, school districts are only encouraged to follow the state’s policy, Rick Padilla said. “That has resulted, in my opinion, in a patchwork of policies across the state,” Padilla said. Now, the new law named after Jack Padilla and Caitlyn Haynes — officially called state House Bill 211221 — requires that school districts adopt certain aspects of the state’s policy, Padilla said. Making changes Colorado’s bullying prevention model policy was first published on the Colorado Department of Education’s website in July 2019 and is required to be updated every three years. Jack and Cait’s Law requires that the model policy “clearly differentiate between a conflict and bullying and between harassment and bullying,” according to the law’s text. That’s important because some school
districts classify what would otherwise be bullying as “student conflict,” Rick Padilla said. The new law also requires the state’s model policy to “clarify the role of cyberbullying during online instruction, which may occur on or off school property.” Another change pays more mind to the emotional damage students can cause. Public schools are required to submit annually a written report to their district’s board of education about the “learning environment,” and that report must include violations such as incidents of bullying. Under the new law, behavior that creates a threat of emotional harm — not just physical harm — to students is included in the types of violations that must be reported. Despite the emotional harm that bullying can cause through social media, if a parent were to raise the issue with a school, officials would probably say they can’t control it, Padilla said. “Well, if you look on Snapchat, if you look on

Instagram, if you follow this stuff, you can intervene,” Padilla added. ‘The bully and the bullied’ After Jack Padilla’s death, Rick Padilla was unsatisfied with an investigation by local authorities. Currently, families have no recourse or ability to appeal the handling of a bullying incident to higher powers without taking legal action, Padilla said. If a principal classifies an incident as school conflict, and a family wants to appeal the situation up to superintendent level or to the school board or, if desired, to the state level, that’s an option Padilla wants them to have. He’s pushing for that ability to be added in the 2022 revision to the state’s model policy. Jack and Cait’s Law requires that the state use a “stakeholder process” when updating the model policy — and that the process include participation by the parents of students who have been bullied. “Between now and 2022,
we’re going to spend time and go through the state’s model bullying prevention policy line by line to come up with really substantive changes,” Padilla said. He added that he feels that revision effort will reduce suicide rates. Last year, Padilla pushed for a similar proposal to the recently passed law, but the bill didn’t see success as the coronavirus pandemic consumed last spring’s legislative work. “What’s really important to us with this bill is this is really a mental health issue,” Padilla said. Padilla wants more resources to help “the bully and the bullied,” he said. Students who bully need counseling instead of being suspended for two weeks and then coming back to continue the problem, he added. Bolstering mental health resources is a goal he and other stakeholders plan on addressing partly via the state model bullying policy. “We have to take a different approach to this,” Padilla said.

Former Littleton city councilmember Kyle Schlachter became the first candidate to officially declare for this fall’s mayoral race, which will mark the first time in many years that citizens will directly elect the city’s mayor. Schlachter, 40, served at-large on city council from 2017-2019. He narrowly lost a reelection bid, coming in a close third among five candidates vying for two at-large seats in 2019, behind Pam Grove and Scott Melin. Voters overwhelmingly approved Ballot Question 3A in 2020, which allows citizens to vote directly for the Littleton’s mayor. The mayor’s role will not change, however. Mayors will still preside over meetings, but will remain one of seven equal votes on city council. Schlachter said he has stayed involved in city politics since he left council, and is eager to make a comeback. “This is a pivotal moment —
Littleton is emerging from COVID, and there will be a lot of challenges and opportunities in the next four years,” he said. “We’ve got to keep the city moving in the right direction, and that means we need to make sure the city can function properly to provide the services citizens expect.” High on the list is addressing transportation and mobility issues, Schlachter said. “It’s about more than just cars,” he said. “It’s about making Littleton safe for wheelchairs and strollers.” Another big item: housing affordability. “It’s important for governments to do what they can to encourage affordable housing,” he said. “There are give-and-takes to be made on things like density, setbacks and height. We need the political willpower to provide options for people of all income ranges.” Schlachter also said he is eager to honor Littleton’s history and preserve its character. Schlachter said he is supportive of the concept of a city sales tax increase to bolster the dwindling capital project fund, which could go before voters as soon as this fall. “The capital projects fund isn’t looking so great,” he said. The lawsuit specifically calls out councilmembers Scott Melin and Carol Fey, saying in part their objection to the senior housing facility as high-end was in error as “there was no evidence in the record to support such arbitrary conclusions.” The lawsuit also rejects Melin’s urging for Evergreen to wait for the outcome of Littleton’s forthcoming Unified Land Use Code (ULUC), an overhaul of city zoning expected to be ratified in October. “The proposed new Code has not yet even been published, much less has it gone through the oftenlengthy process of consideration, which may or may not lead to approval,” the lawsuit reads in part. The City of Littleton responded to a request for comment with a statement from City Attorney Reid Betzing: “The City believes the application was properly denied by the City Council when evaluating all the facts presented at the hearing and applying them to the City’s adopted criteria. The City continues to work with Evergreen Devco, Inc. going forward on delivering their possible development project(s).”

A 60-foot cottonwood tree smashed into three parked cars at Sterne Park around 11 a.m. on June 8, landing just feet from a gazebo filled with members of a retired schoolteachers’ club and an aerobics class. No one was injured. Arborists with South Suburban Parks and Recreation District, which manages the park, removed the tree from the cars shortly after 1 p.m. It wasn’t immediately clear why the tree fell, but South Suburban arborist Eldon Garcia-Caldwell said he suspected the soil around the tree grew soggy throughout the wet spring, to the point that a gust of wind could have toppled it. It’s not unheard of for mature trees to fall, Garcia-Caldwell said. “We’re always concerned,” he said. “There’s no such thing as a safe tree. We’re just glad nobody was hurt.” Maureen Supple, whose 2002 Toyota Camry took a direct hit, had left her car just seconds before the tree fell. “I’ve cheated death before,” said Supple, a retired software engineer. “My friends have been telling me I deserve a new car anyway. Maybe I ought to go buy a lottery ticket too.”

She was sitting in the gazebo and turned just in time to see the tree come down. “It felt like an earthquake,” she said. Paula Nowfel, also a retired Littleton schoolteacher whose 2018 Ford Escape took heavy damage to the left side, said she had been excited to come to the park. The meeting was the first in-person gathering since the beginning of the COVID crisis for the Alpha

During the week of June 21-25, about two dozen skilled plein air artists will be able to access private properties in Douglas County, capturing images of pristine conserved land in the county which is not open to the public. Jagged rock formations, distant mountain views, closeup meadows, rich colors and more will fill a gallery afterwards ... On Saturday and Sunday, a large number of paintings will be exhibited and on sale at the White Pavilion, 414 Perry St., Castle Rock (June 26, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and June 27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.) Sales will benefit the Douglas Land Conservancy, formed in 1987 through a citizen initiative, to protect large tracts of land from development for perpetuity. DLC has preserved more than 26,708 acres of open space in Douglas, Elbert and Jefferson counties and is accredited nationally accredited by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission and is a certified Land Trust in the State of Colorado. Patti Hostetler is executive director of the Douglas Land Conservancy and is excited to present the
eighth annual exhibit of “Capturing the Beauty of Open Land.” She says they are bringing in “new artists as well as favorites from the past.” Individual artists will each bring their own world view and refined technique for capturing color, weather, rock formations, mood and time of day as they look for the perfect spot to set up an easel and art lovers will be able to take home one-of-a-kind treasures that will become family heirlooms. (Or consider a perfect gift for newlyweds or perhaps a recent graduate, just starting out with a new home.) Some painters will work in watercolor and others in acrylics or oil paints. Some will focus on a close-up image, while others will present a vast expanse ... all have been recognized for their particular skills, so a visit to this exhibit will offer many images and a real treat for any viewer lucky enough to include a visit to the exhibit on the weekend of June 26-27. Failing to be facile was tassel-related hassle
Y
ou might think being chosen to speak at a high school graduation ceremony would be a welcome opportunity, espeQUIET cially for someone who is filled with DESPERATION opinions and loves the English language. No, I was mortified and begged them to reconsider. The one I gave might have been the worst high school graduation Craig Marshall speech in history. Smith It was humorless, for one thing, and veined with seriosity. That night, inside a ninetydegree gymnasium with humidity outside close to it, flashed before my eyes when I read, “Ousted California principal escorted off campus after graduation speech.” Ben Nakamura, former principal at Stagg High School in Stockton, Calif., “focused more on his grievances with the school district than
the students he was meant to send off in the world,” the article read. I made the same mistake by focusing on myself instead of the group in green gowns sitting behind me, or the parents in front of me who had made sacrifices on behalf of their children, and demonstrated inordinate patience with the menu of problems many teenagers face. The word “ceremony” gives me a pain. Defined as a “ritualistic event with a purpose,” a graduation ceremony is usually a dull affair with too much pomp for me. The ritualistic event with a purpose I am in favor of is called “lunch.” Not the ones with robes and mortarboards. If you’re wondering where a mortarboard gets its name, it comes from the board brickmasons use to hold mortar. They slip, slide, look silly, and come with tassels you’re supposed to move from the right to the left once you’ve graduated. Then what? For some reason,
you’re expected to throw the mortarboard in the air. “Student loses sight in one eye from mortarboard incident.” I should have opened with a joke. “Why did the teacher marry the janitor?” “Because he swept her off her feet.” But I didn’t. Believe it or not, I’d like to do it all over — a Mulligan — and try my best not to be so profound (i.e., pretentious) and avoid clichés like the plague. I’d say something about the teachers too. I don’t know how they do it. Or why. The pay is low, the disrespect high. “Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?” The story goes that the script of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” took six days to write. It has its moments. The scene in the Art Institute is the best. The film’s overall theme seems to be that high school is the enemy. Likewise, the overall theme of “The Breakfast Club.” Both movies were written and directed by John Hughes.
High school isn’t the enemy. Neither are the principals nor the teachers. The bullies are. If I were given the opportunity to give my speech over, I’d name the names of the bullies and the ones they bullied. That would be something, wouldn’t it? But there’s a hitch and it’s a big one. The gymnasium is gone, the school is gone, and a third of my classmates are gone. A few died in the war. The speech I gave was years and years ago in an Ohio high school that has since been closed because of low enrollment. I’d close with a joke. Maybe what Charles Schulz said. “Don’t worry about the world coming to an end today. It’s already tomorrow in Australia.” Class of 2021, good luck. You’ll need it. Up until this week, I had always attributed this quote to our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. With increased frequency, it seems that many of us these days are finding out that we may have been fooled or misinformed about lots of things over the years. Maybe even in very recent history. Perhaps even today. If we see it, it must be true. If we read it, it must be fact. If we hear it from a reliable source, it must be

indisputable. If it appears on social media, there must be no doubt about its authenticity. “Never let the truth get in the way of a good story” — Falsely attributed to Mark Twain Sadly, many of us now filter everything we see, hear, read, or experience through the lens of potentially being duped. Our trusted sources are no longer trustworthy. Opinions have become facts. And no longer is it just the deemed famously important politicians, celebrities, athletes, and others who previously held the title of influencer, it is anyone and everyone propagating misinformation or disinformation to further an agenda or action whether that agenda or action is good or evil. It used to be that we could easily discern the difference between the good guys and the bad guys. Books, TV shows, comic books, movies, and plays all clearly depicted good versus evil, right versus wrong, up versus down, and nighttime versus daytime. Today we count on posts, memes, ads, apps, and ads on apps to provide that same guidance. The legitimacy of what is being said and
received has everything to do with priority and agenda propagation and nothing to do with reality. The validity of what we see, hear, read, or experience is determined by our threshold of hope or fear in that very moment. Somewhere along the way I heard this one, “The problem with quotes on the internet is that it is hard to validate their authenticity.” — Abraham Lincoln (Anonymous). Think about that one for a minute. As a society, how funny have we become? And it’s not only ha-ha funny, as there are some tremendously amazing comedians among us, but it is also strange funny with stories so outrageous that we just might be led to believe that Abraham Lincoln really did make a quote about the internet. The thing is this, the horse has left the barn, the train has left the station, and there is a good chance that neither horse nor train is ever coming back to the barn or the station. For those of you familiar with my column you may be asking yourself, “What pessimist wrote this trash and what did you do with my
forever optimist?” Well, stay with me because here it comes. You already know everything you need to know about right and wrong, good and evil, up and down, and night and day. No one must tell you the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. You don’t have to “log in” to “be in” the know, you already know. The only two things you really need are already within you, and they are approximately 18 inches apart. That is the distance between your heart and your head. All you need to do is connect the dots. Pride Month brings a time to increase mindfulness

his column has nothing directly to do with race, politics, religion or beliefs. Phew! It does, however, have everything to do with being good neighbors. The only agenda I have is for all of us to be continually imGUEST prove to provide a COLUMN considerate Colorado community. I do not have lived experience as a person whose identity is in the minority. Today, I write as a cisgender (meaning I identify as the same gender Linda Newell as I was assigned at birth), heterosexual woman. I am a mother, sister, friend and ally of those who identify differently than me. Like you, I just want to see Colorado as a place where we have respect for each other and live the lives we want to live. It’s Pride Month in our country, when we celebrate and recognize diversity in sexual orientation or gender identity. What a perfect time
to talk about how we talk respectfully with and about our LGBTQIA2S (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Two-Spirit) friends and families and why it’s so important. For those of us who identify or express ourselves as heterosexual and cisgender, labels may not seem important. We go about the activities of our lives with little to no care or notice about what we call ourselves, how we show up at school or work or who’s looking at us in the grocery store. Yes, we may be carrying with us some other issues of self-consciousness or insecurity at times, but we’re in the norm. Most people look like us and identify similarly. But for those of the LGBTQIA2S community, it is not always as comfortable to express themselves and other challenges. He should be asked to write guest columns. I feel there are many taxpaying citizens who want to voice their opinions but are too afraid because of retaliation. Parade June 24. When a few residents and employees met to plan the upcoming parade, it started me thinking. Why is our parade important to me? I researched the history of pride parades and the police attack on patrons of the Greenwich Village Stonewall Inn early on Saturday, June 28, 1969 that incited not just gay people, but people of many sexual orientations who lived nearby. The reaction led to marches by gay people and supporters nationwide. So I asked myself a question. Why am I walking in our parade? Why does this old, white, straight man feel he must participate, plant gay pride flags outside his apartment, encourage others to take part? My answer: I will walk proudly with my neighbors and friends to express my love for others, who may look and act a lot like me or may be so different and unique that I admire and love them for who they are. For the Wind Crest Pride Parade, I will not judge, I will celebrate our diversity and proclaim our humanity. I will be in the Wind Crest parade to show that I am human, that I accept who I am and am proud to accept others for who they are. Everyone is worthy of my love and respect, and human rights matter. EMILIO E. (LEE) FIORINO 1/18/1925 - 5/22/2021
Lee lived a long, healthful, prolific and vibrant life until his passing on May 22, 2021 at age 96. Born of Italian immigrants Emilio Fiorino and Ernestina Tessitore Fiorino in Little Italy, New York City on January 18, 1925, he served with the 204th Combat Engineers in Europe during WWII. After the war, he met the Love of his life, M. Madeleine Turgeon, and married her on September 24, 1949. As a young draftsman, he was selected to draw up safety upgrades for the Empire State Building’s observation deck. Recruited by renowned Denver architect Temple Buell, he moved in 1955 from NYC to Colorado to realize his ambition of becoming a prominent architect himself, and to raise a family in the wide open spaces of the West. In 1965 he designed and built a custom home for his fast growing family near Parker, CO. His several architectural design creations include Denver’s Tiffany Plaza. He retired to Tucson AZ, fulfilling a lifelong dream of living in the desert. There he continued his passion for photography and watercolor painting,
receiving several local and national awards for his work. His deep, abiding love and appreciation of music was a hallmark of his life and inspired the same within each of his children. A man of impeccable integrity, he was dearly loved by many and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Madeleine, their 5 children, Robert, Paul, Michelle, John, and Ted, 11 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his name to the Rocky Mountain Down Syndrome Association at www.rmdsa.org/ donate, which happens to be located in the Majestic Building that he designed. Charlie Carroll 1933-2021
Charlie Carroll of Littleton, Colorado was born on May 15, 1933 in Pittsburgh, PA entered into eternal life with his heavenly Father on June 8, 2021. He was predeceased by his father and mother Charles Carroll Sr and Elizabeth Stickney. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Marilyn Estey, son Craig Carroll, daughter Ann Carroll and daughter-in-law Sue Humm. He spent his early life in Pittsburgh before moving to Miami by way of Havana, Cuba – where he and his mother lived with his American born grandparents a few months while his father became settled, readying their home. Charlie received his BA in commercial art at the University of Miami where he was also a member of the ROTC and Kappa Sigma fraternity. His first military assignment took him to Denver, CO where he was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base then Ent Air Force Base in Colorado Springs. Charlie left the military in 1968 when he accepted a position as Director of Utilities in Englewood, CO and later as Deputy Director of Utilities in Aurora, CO. He received an MA in Public Administration at the University of Northern Colorado. Charlie’s personal life included a love of skiing, as auxiliary patrol in the Breckenridge Ski Patrol and as host of the ‘Over the Hill Gang’. He participated in
local stage productions, had a love of singing in choirs both in the military and his church. He had a love of cars, eventually buying an automotive repair business in Denver, CO after his years in public service. Charlie was passionate about the city of Littleton, involved in the community as president of Historic Littleton, board membership with Friends of the Library, the Denver Posse and the creation of the Littleton Jazz Festival organization where he organized an annual jazz festival in addition to other concerts. Charlie cultivated a large network of friends over the years and stayed close to all until the end. Charlie will be remembered for many things- his humor, pursuit of art and ink drawing, his love of stage acting and choir participation, his faith, and love of his family and friends. Charlie’s funeral service and reception will be held on Monday, June 21st at 10:30 am at the Littleton United Methodist Church, 5894 South Datura Street, Littleton, CO 80120. ardening is a challenge, yet it is such a satisfying pastime. “Gardening is one giant experiment. But that’s part of the fun of it,” said Keri Luster, manager of Plum Creek Garden Market’s Denver location. “There will be failures and OK, because you’ll learn from those. The key is just to have fun.” During Plum Creek’s off-season, Luster serves as a gardening consultant. “I really like helping people make the world a beautiful place,” Luster said. But not only that, Luster added, “gardening can help you grow as a person. It’s the pride of creating something.” Luster grew up in the gardening industry. Her father owned Groundcovers, which operated for about 40 years in the north University Hills neighborhood. Luster started going to work with her father when she was 12. In 2019, the city of Denver purchased the Groundcovers property and will eventually turn it into a public neighborhood park, Luster said. Gardening can provide you with something to be proud of, Luster said. “It’s hard work, but at the end of the day, you will be satisfied with what you did,” she added. All five of Plum Creek Garden Market’s seasonal pop-up markets opened on late April and are open seven days a week through June. Plum Creek Denver is located at 2150 S. Monaco Pkwy., which is in north Goldsmith. The markets boast more than 700 varieties of plants including perennials, annuals, vegetables, some fruits, herbs and some shrubs; as well as plants in hanging baskets; some accessories such as pots; and bagged goods such as soils, compost and fertilizers. “There were a lot of new gardeners starting to get into it last year because everyone was stuck at home,” said Matt Niemann, who oversees the operations of all five Plum Creek Garden Markets. “People wanted to make their home as beautiful as possible.” An industry goal this year, Niemann added, is to keep all those new gardeners interested in their new-found passion. “And one way to do that is to them be successful,” Niemann said. There’s always something new to learn — whether beginner or expert — and the more time a person spends around plants, the more knowledge that person will absorb,

because of the color they add to his yard. But he and his wife enjoy cooking, and especially so with fresh ingredients, so Lester’s garden includes a variety of vegetables ranging from tomatoes and cucumbers to squash and peppers, as well as an assortment of herbs such as rosemary, basil, thyme and cilantro. The Lesters even have a peach tree they can harvest. “Gardening will give you a creative outlet to do something outdoors,” Lester said. After all, he added, “Colorado has a lot of wonderful days to be spent outside.”

“The only new building we’ve built out there is because the fleet shop collapsed,” he said. “That’s not the way we want to support our community.” It’s not all bad news, Reester said. The city has collected massive new amounts of high-quality data on city assets in recent years, allowing for carefully targeted upgrades. But big items loom on the horizon. The intersection of Mineral Avenue and Santa Fe Drive is serving many times the cars it was built for, and matching funds to secure grants to fix it could stretch into the tens of millions of dollars. Sean Walsh, who heads a public polling firm contracted by the city, said recent public opinion polling found residents generally view the city and local officials favorably, and found far more residents favor increasing city revenues than cutting costs. The polling, presented to city council last month, found marginal support for the .5% sales tax increase proposal, though support for a .75% increase was below a majority. Relph said he feels there are few other options beyond increasing revenues with taxes. Federal COVID relief funds are one-time and tightly regulated, while city funds with larger reserves, like the sewer fund, cannot legally be used for other purposes. Even general fund reserves are expected to contract in coming years in the face of growing payroll costs. “We can’t cut our way out of this thing,” Relph said.

The fund pays for road maintenance, city-owned buildings and the vehicle fleet including police cars, and forms the basis of matching funds required to obtain state and federal grants for bigticket highway projects needed to address congestion, Hooten said. City staff have identified more than 70 unfunded capital projects with a projected cost of more than $98 million in the next 15 years, she said, adding that infrastructure projects only grow more expensive the longer they’re put off. Some of those projects include repairs and updates to the municipal courthouse, Town Hall Arts Center, Bemis Library and the Littleton Museum. Others include police radios and cars. The fund’s revenue streams are unreliable, Hooten said, with gasoline taxes proving feeble as hybrid, electric and more fuelefficient cars take to the road, and highly variable revenues from building use taxes. Littleton has fewer big-box retailers than neighboring municipalities, she said, making for a softer sales tax base. In the past, Littleton has paid for big-ticket items with one-time revenues such as by selling water rights, but Hooten said those just won’t cut it forever. “We’re out of one-time fixes,” she said. “We’re out of Band-Aids. Now is the time to confront this dilemma.” The answer could come from tax increases, Hooten said. City council has been exploring a range of tax increase proposals in recent months, which could go before voters as soon as this November. Recent opinion polling found broad support for a hike in the retail marijuana tax and the implementation of a first-ever lodging tax, though those are projected to generate up to $1 million each annually at the high end — still short of the $6.5 million a year city officials say is needed to meet that $98 million goal over the next 15 years. An increase in Littleton’s sales tax rate from 3% to 3.5% would generate the $6.5 million a year, according to city estimates, while an increase to 3.75% would likely generate an additional $10 million a year in revenues, which Relph said would help “address growth issues sooner than later.” Materials presented at the meeting also suggested a cost-saving measure: cutting Bemis Library and the Littleton Museum from the city budget, for an annual savings of $4.2 million. Public Works Director Keith Reester said Littleton’s roads are in a sorry state, and only getting worse. “We’re in the bottom quartile in the state” in terms of measured road quality, Reester said. “If we don’t take care of it, it becomes a million dollars a mile” to replace, he said. “We have segments of road that are there.” Meanwhile, the city’s public works campus is falling apart, he said, with most of the buildings dating to to the late 1940s.

Rock Canyon, Cherry Creek eye state titles after regionals

Regional qualifying tournaments provide an early look at what to expect at the girls state golf championships. And, Rock Canyon, Cherry Creek, Valor Christian and Loveland appear to be title contenders after winning regional titles. Each of the four Class 5A regional tournaments had two full teams qualify for the state tournaments and 13 individuals not on the two top regional teams also advanced to the state tournament which will be held June 21-22 the City Park Golf Course. Arapahoe, Legend, Mountain Vista and Chaparral will take full, four-player teams to state after being regional runners-ups. Rock Canyon captured the Central regional title in the tourney which was contested June 7 at City Park. The Jaguars finished with a 231 team total while Arapahoe was second at 241. Sloane Post of Arapahoe was the
Central medalist with a par 72. She sank three birdies on the final seven holes of her round. Three Jaguar players, Gisella Lagrimas, Amira Badruddin and Grace Dunkleberger, all came in with scores of 77 while Olivia Salvatore, the fourth Rock Canyon player, had a season-best 90. “The girls are improving in every meet,” said Rock Canyon coach Dave Vahling. “We are catching up a little bit after we had a lot of snowouts and rainouts. I think we’ve a top five team in the state.” Dunkleberger is looking forward to returning to City Park. “For our team a state, we can shoot a lot better,” she said. Cherry Creek, the 2019 state champs, was first in the Southern regional played June 8 at Broken Tee Golf Course and the Bruins’ Rachel Penzenstadler was the medalist with a 1-over-par 73. All four Creek players finished in the Top 10 as the Bruins won their fourth straight regional title with a team score of 236. Other members of the team were second place finisher Marielle Gojo (79), Alyssa Chin (84) and Aerin Pak (87). Legend was second (251) in the Southern regional while Castle View was third (277). derstood where to put the ball off the tee,” said Creek coach Randy Smith. “Our prep really paid off as the conditions were as difficult as summer conditions could be as the heat and wind really took a toll on all the players. “Rachel played extremely solid and as we like to say on the team, she played very boring. She put the ball in good positions and constantly hit a lot of greens and made putts when it counted. As tough as the conditions were, she made it look easy.” Valor Christian senior Grace Young had five birdies and an eagle in her round of 4-underpar 70 to grab medalist honors at the Western Regional which was held June 10 at Indian Tree Golf Course. The Eagles, with Jessie Scholte (77), Carmen Carpinelli (87) and Juliana Carpinelli (110) joining Young, had a 234 team score while Mountain Vista was second at 241. Loveland won the Northern Regional tourney which was held June 7 at Coyote Creek Golf Course. Mountain Vista was second in the team standings but 32 strokes behind Loveland. Katelyn Lehigh, a junior at Loveland, came in with three birdies and an eagle on the back nine to take medalist honors with a 5-under-par 66.

Cherry Creek won yet another girls state tennis championship on June 12 at the Gates Tennis Center but this one was a little different. Creek, two points ahead of Fairview heading in the final day of the two-day tournament, played strong in the semifinals and finals on the final day and won the championship by 27 points (66-39) over the Knights. It was the fourth straight state girls tennis title for the Bruins and marked their 22nd state crown in the past 23 seasons. Creek has now won 37 girls state tennis championships. Still, this year’s title felt different since the season started later and was shortened among the several changes dictated by COVID concerns. And the state tournament was modified from three days to two days with a new scoring system to tally team points with no playback matches. Cherry Creek, spurred by the disappointment after the 2020 season was canceled, advanced players into six of the seven singles and doubles finals and faced opposition from Fairview in five of the title matches. Creek won all five of those title matches against the Knights and added a sixth title in a No. 4 doubles

Junior Lorena Cedeno, who grew up in Venezuela, captured the No. 2 singles title with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 win over Fairview’s Natalie Stone on a hot day at the Gates Tennis Center. Freshman Anika Sharma took the No. 3 singles crown with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Alexis Bernthal of Fairview. Creek won all four doubles titles. Seniors Eliza and Nicole Hill were the No. 1 double champions. Eliza was the No. 2 singles state titlist in 2019 and Nicole took the 2019 No. 3 singles title. semifinals, won the No. 1 singles championship with a 6-7, 6-0, 6-4 triumph over Smoky Hill’s Valerie Negin who was trying to win her second state title. “I’m excited, proud, satisfied and everything,” said Creek coach Chris Jacob. “I’m just so happy for them. These girls have worked so hard and the seniors are such good players. To do that in six weeks is amazing. “Every match was tough. The seedings were real deep and to be able to push through two matches in this weather and stay focused shows what these girls do off the court and how they get ready.” Jacob pointed out the No. 2 and No. 3 singles wins as important to winning the state title. “The finals with the new system for points they were using, those singles spots were key for us,” she commented. “Lorena winning at two singles for us and Anika’s win at three single and by finishing second at one of those two spots would have had a tremendous lean point wise.” Creek picked up 13 points by taking the No. 2 and 3 singles titles. The Bruins also gained 10 points with victories in the doubles matches. “I played good super good with confidence,” said Cedeno. “It feels really good to be a state champion, and I’m so happy to be playing for Cherry Creek. I was so focused in the third set.” For Jacob the 2021 title will always

Good news for Millennials wondering if their Mortal Kombat skills are still sharp: You can test them on Friday nights in Littleton this summer aboard the Retro-Cade, a former DIA shuttle bus turned free video arcade. The Retro-Cade will be parked on Main Street every Friday night this summer as part of Weekends on Main, Littleton’s outdoor dining program. The bus features 13 cabinet-style arcade games, from Pac-Man to Mortal Kombat to NBA Jam and Cruisin’ USA — all free of charge. Oh, and hundreds of classic Nintendo games on a giant screen. The bus is the brainchild of Andy O’Connell, who fell in love with the mobile life while working on a pizza truck. Just before COVID hit, he

bought the old bus from Craigslist and outfitted it with his favorite games from childhood, cutting the arcade cabinets down to size to fit aboard the bus. Though the Retro-Cade had to be mothballed during COVID shutdowns, O’Connell said the summer of 2021 is the perfect time to roll it out as people emerge from the pandemic eager for fun experiences. In honor of Father’s Day
L
ong ago I lived out of a suitcase and performed in a soul band for six years. The band was the Satisfactions, a mix of Midwestern and BACK Washington, D.C. musicians that CHANNEL played one-to-fourweek bookings in nightclubs. We played a half-dozen major cities and many smaller ones — International Falls, Minnesota to the far north; Joplin, Mikkel Kelly Missouri to the south; Camp Springs, Maryland to the east; and Casper, Wyoming to the west. It was a simpler time. I had a suitcase, three suit bags, a tough Jean-Paul Germain gray raincoat and my guitar gear. My one monthly bill was $90 for Blue Cross health insurance. My father was a hospital ad-
ministrator and my mother was a registered nurse and community leader. One promise I knew to keep for them was to never go without health insurance. I made an appointment and secured my own policy before finishing my music degree. Soon thereafter, I jumped at the chance to travel and perform. Night life on the road was loud and jazzy, but I do remember my quietest Christmas ever at the Midway Motor Lodge in Elkhart, Indiana. I remember the eerie lapse of life in the hallways of the deserted motel and the half-present expression of the front desk clerk who drew the short straw to cover Christmas Eve graveyard shift.
