Littleton residents have until the end of July to weigh in on a draft of a sprawling document that will guide development in the city for decades to come. City officials released a draft of the Universal Land Use Code (ULUC), a total overhaul of the city’s zoning and land use codes, on June 7, and will accept public comments until July 31. City council is expected to ratify the final version of the ULUC in October. The ULUC is the culmination of years of work by city staff and council, intended to replace the city’s current land use codes, which were originally written in the 1970s and have been amended many times since. The goal is to bring Littleton’s zoning into the 21st century, said Jennifer Henninger, Littleton’s director of community development. “The last time our code was overhauled was the Carter era,” Henninger said. “Think of how much our world has changed in that time,

5 things to know: Improved water safety could save lives Swim school business owners give tips for keeping kids safe this summer BY ELLIS ARNOLD EARNOLD@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Here’s something parents might not know: Drowning is responsible for more deaths among children aged 1-4 than any other cause except congenital anomalies, or birth defects. “Drowning doesn’t look like drowning the way it’s portrayed in the movies,” said Lindsey Talaga, owner of the Goldfish Swim School Centennial East location. “Drowning is actually often silent with no frantic waving or yelling.” The process of drowning can begin in mere seconds. That’s why it’s important to take precautions around pools and other bodies of water where kids swim and play. Talaga and Wendy Skaalerud, owner of the Big Blue Swim School’s Centennial location, shared some tips to keep families safe as summer break begins. Drowning a common emergency Every day, on average, about 10 people die from unintentional drowning, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of those, two

are children aged 14 or younger. Among children aged 1-14, fatal drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional, injuryrelated death — behind motor vehicle crashes, the CDC says. For every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency-department care for
nonfatal submersion injuries, according to the CDC.
to always jump into the pool — never dive, Skaalerud said.
‘Never swim alone’ Never swim alone, Talaga said. Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved lifejacket, especially when swimming in lakes and oceans where water conditions can be uncertain and unpredictable, she added. “Designate a water guardian who keeps a vigilant eye on the swimmers, and be sure to change guardians every 30 minutes so he/she is alert and refreshed,” Talaga said. Always keep a watchful eye on children and remember that “lifeguards are not babysitters,” Skaalerud said. “In a busy pool, lifeguards are watching so many swimmers, they could miss a struggling child. Parents need to always, always be watching a child near or in the water,” Skaalerud added.
Learn CPR Talaga advises parents to get CPR-certified. CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and is a lifesaving technique that’s useful in emergencies, such as a heart attack or near drowning. “Being prepared — and trained — for an emergency is one of the best water safety tips out there. At least one person in your family should be CPR-certified, with rescue breathing,” Talaga said. “It’s a relatively quick and easy class, and it’s offered by community centers and other local groups. It could save a life.”

Talk through rules Talaga recommends parents talk to their kids about water safety and establish family rules and expectations. “Rules like no running, no diving in shallow water and no dunking are important, and you can create additional rules specific to your children and their swim abilities, like no swimming in the deep end, or breaks every hour,” Talaga said. but Littleton’s code hasn’t adapted.” The philosophy, Henninger said, is to build a code that more proactively describes the city’s land use goals, rather than simply serving as a list of restrictions. “The old code is full of ‘gotchas,’” she said. “It’s very complicated.” Old zoning has spurred trouble Littleton’s old code has led to controversy in recent years. Residents in south Littleton were caught off guard in 2018 when a shooting range was built in keeping with what then-mayor Debbie Brinkman called antiquated zoning that predated much of the area’s residential development. Along Broadway, commercial development in the Littleton Village Metro District is stalled in part over what developers call dysfunctional zoning. At Santa Fe Drive and Mineral Avenue, the city currently faces a lawsuit from a developer whose rezoning application for a mixeduse development was rejected by the city council in May, while to the south, city staff are struggling with a large-scale housing development moving forward under decades-old zoning that doesn’t mandate impact fees. The hope is that the ULUC will head off further zoning-induced headaches, Henninger said, with a
June 24, 2021 greater focus on community character. The ULUC, largely written by consultants from Kendig Keast Collaborative, is built on years of studies, surveys, community meetings and outreach from city officials. The so-called visioning phase led to the 2019 ratification of the city’s first new comprehensive plan since the 1980s, and the ratification of a first-ever transportation master plan. What types of housing, where? Among the more notable zoning changes in the ULUC draft is the formulation of a “corridor mixed use” zone, primarily along Broadway and Santa Fe Drive, which would streamline mixed-use developments with businesses beneath high-density housing. Also notable is a framework for accessory dwelling units or ADUs — also called carriage houses. The draft ULUC would allow attached, detached and internal ADUs in certain housing zones, some as use by right and others by conditional use. The draft also provides more robust definitions and standards for duplexes and triplexes, though it does not allow the conversion of single-family homes into higherdensity in any zones where it is not already allowed under existing code. The draft also incorporates short-term rental regulations ratified by city council in 2020, which mandate a licensing structure for short-term rentals and restricts which zones allow them, but does
not limit the number of STRs in the city, how many one licensee can own, or where owners must live. All of the above — mixed-use development, high-density housing, single-family zoning conversions, ADUs and short-term rentals — factor into the increasingly significant debate over affordable housing in Littleton. One of the comprehensive plan’s “core values” calls for a range of housing types with a variety of price points, and sets a goal of building more than 6,500 new housing units in coming decades. A landmark housing study commissioned by city council in 2017 found Littleton’s housing is increasingly unaffordable to middleand lower-income earners, with a 2020 update finding the problem only getting worse. The update also found the proportion of young families in Littleton is on the decline as housing prices soar, a factor Littleton Public Schools cited last spring as part of the decision to close several elementary schools. Two studies presented to the TriCities Homelessness Initiative last winter found that climbing rates of homelessness are largely driven by spiking housing prices. Median single-family home prices in Littleton currently hover around $600,000, a roughly 300% increase from the turn of the 21st century, though wages are up only about 50% in the same time period. But the draft ULUC does not offer definitions or goals for affordable housing, though City Manager
Mark Relph said there’s a good reason. “The ULUC provides a foundation,” Relph said. “It’s a framework that can be added onto. It won’t answer all things in October. There are years of work ahead.” City council has identified affordable housing as a stand-alone goal with plans to develop a citywide strategy in coming months, Relph said, and plans to work closely with the Denver Regional Council of Governments as it seeks to understand and implement a sweeping new state law which would allow municipalities far more leeway in mandating affordable housing. Draft doesn’t go far enough, critics say Still, the soft-touch approach toward affordable housing has drawn criticism. Littleton resident Emily Dykes heads a nascent group called Vibrant Littleton, with the goal of loosening zoning to boost housing affordability. Dykes told council on June 15 that she was puzzled the draft ULUC didn’t seem to incorporate what she called widespread support for expanding ADUs citywide, and hoped the draft would allow for more duplexes and triplexes in single-family zones. “I think this is a major missed opportunity,” Dykes said. “I think this draft has a long way to go ... I grew up in Franktown, and spent much of my youth riding horses. My dad and brother are engineers, and I thought that’s where I was headed. Instead, I ran away from undergrad and wound up in Americorps. I helped with disaster response after hurricanes Charlie, Francis, Ivan and Jean. I love emergency response and animals, and I decided to become a veterinarian. I loved emergency medicine, but horses were my passion. I assisted at an endurance race, and I noticed heart murmurs in several of the horses, and it made me want to turn away from research and head right into working with horses. All the pretty horses Our clinic is in Elizabeth, and sometimes people bring animals to me, but most often I’m headed out into the field in a truck. I cover a lot of Elbert and Douglas counties. We have people with show horses, and people with horses in their back yards. But I’m also the primary care veterinarian for the Harmony Equine
Center of the Dumb Friends League. I treat a lot of starved or feral horses, and those that need new homes. It’s easy to end up with a wild horse if you just don’t pay attention to them. Not so much in this area, but in the mountains, the Western Slope or on the eastern plains, you can end up with large herds of horses who don’t know what people are. A matter of demeanor Approaching a hurt or nervous horse is all about your demeanor. If you’re scared, they get scared. It’s about not getting psyched out and staying relaxed in a crappy situation. Some will lose their minds regardless. But if you’re an animal person, they can pick up on that. Medications can help too, of course. Sometimes we are doing surgery in the field. The most common field surgery is castration — it’s the fastest surgery you’ll ever see. Wound repairs are common. For more specialized issues, we do have a surgery center. It’s made me realize how much just a very small interaction can make such a difference, for horses and people. I appreciate when an owner calls in tears, and I can reassure them that I can make it better. That’s one of the best parts. are asking for ADUs, missing-middle housing and walkability.” Corey Reitz, who heads South Metro Housing Options, Littleton’s housing authority, told council at the same meeting that recent zoning amendments covering downtown — effectively early elements of the ULUC — cost his agency an affordable housing development. The newly-imposed four-story height limit in the downtown zone, intended to preserve downtown’s character, ruined the economic viability of a proposed affordable housing development, Reitz said. “It was a huge opportunity missed in terms of missing out on affordable housing we’re in need of,” Reitz said. What about sustainability? City council watchdog Pam Chadbourne, who has long called the ULUC an opaque process that’s overly friendly to developers, said she is disturbed by something else absent from the ULUC draft: sustainability goals and climate change mitigation standards. “The people of the future are looking to you,” Chadbourne said to council on June 15. “They’re dependent on you. They won’t know who you are, but they’ll know the mistakes you make.” Though the draft includes an environmental management section, it largely deals with floodplain issues, and noise, waste and pollu-
tion rules. Again, Relph said those discussions are yet to come. “With sustainability, there’s a universe of things you could do. First we need to take an inventory of what we’re doing now, then talk about next steps. We’ll be bringing that discussion to council beginning in September.” For now, city officials are simply hoping to receive as much feedback on the draft as possible. The draft, available at EnvisionLittleton.org, includes tools to leave comments on every subsection of the code. City officials are mainly hoping to receive feedback online, said Henninger, the community development director, with very few paper copies available. “When you print it out, it’s almost 500 pages,” she said. “It cuts into the budget. We’re planning on having a couple paper copies at (Bemis) library.” Still, Henninger said the city plans to go on a marketing blitz at the end of June and into July, with plans for posters with QR codes linking to the draft to go up around town, online outreach, and a pair of open houses in July. City council, Planning Commission and the Historical Preservation Board all have public meetings on the draft scheduled for July, and Henninger said city planning staff are happy to sit down one-on-one with residents to go over the draft. “We want to hear from you,” Henninger said. “Let us know if we’ve got this right.”

The past keeps populating the present
or the past year and a half, old acquaintances I haven’t heard from in five, ten, fifteen and even twenty years have written to me. QUIET Has the same thing been happenDESPERATION ing to you? Most have been former students. There are over 10,000 of them. It’s possible some of them are reevaluating the time we spent together in the perspective Craig Marshall of maturity; i.e., Smith maybe I wasn’t such a (expletive deleted) after all. Perhaps others want to know if I am still alive. These reunions have a short shelf life. They last for an afternoon, a couple of days, a week at most. Once we have provided updates, they enter an odd phase of wondering, “Where is this going?” Often they begin with, “You might not remember me.”
Often I don’t. Schoolteachers, especially at the college level, encounter an extraordinary range of individuals. I’m convinced college art teachers encounter the most (unusual) individuals. Art attracts all kinds. Misfits, flakes, dilettantes. Also focused, committed, insightful. Any one of the classes I taught could have had its story made into a film. Invariably, there was both drama and conflict. Because art is a subjective experience, students often distrust their grades. Low grades were generally a result of absences, failures to complete projects, or drawing a shoe when the assignment was to draw a fish. But taking personal responsibility for a low grade requires an ability to be honest some don’t have until later on. “I realize now the grade you gave me was deserved. Sorry I stuck a screwdriver in your tire, Mr. Smith.” The subjectivity I refer to doesn’t
occur in math classes. Two plus two always equal four. If a student answers “Nine,” well, they’re wrong. How can one drawing of an apple be better than another? Trust me, it can. Many of the emails I’ve received have been heartwarming. I am, despite a contrary illusion, a sentimentalist. Some messages are comical, some poignant. “My husband and I stay together for the kids, I have been vaccinated, but he refuses, the dog is incontinent, I haven’t picked up a drawing pencil since your class, goodbye.” “You always played music while we were drawing. I heard a song today you used to play. It brought back some good memories.” Perhaps that’s why I have been hearing from people out of the blue: good memories. Since, oh, 2016, the scrapbook has not been filled with jollity. Unless you are The Amazing Criswell it’s impossible to remember the future. Sometimes it’s difficult to remem-
ber what I had for breakfast. But somewhere in the brain’s reliquary are enduring memories. I’ve been reminiscing about Little League baseball. My dental assistant’s son is 8. He’s playing T-ball. I played T-ball when I was 8. The following year we had pitchers on the mound. My team was unbeaten for two years. I still have my glove. It’s my “Rosebud,” if you get the film reference. After Little League, Life came along. The internet makes these reunions much easier than they once were. You can find almost anyone now, unless they have changed their name. There’s an artist named Grow Love. Her name used to be Robyn Frances. If you’re looking for Robyn Frances, look for Grow Love instead. Saul Bellow: “Everybody needs his memories. Experiencing life’s abundance
O
ne of the bigger misconceptions and mistakes I see or hear is around abundance. For some reason, many of us immediately associate abundance WINNING with money. And WORDS although having an abundance of money rarely hurts us, having an abundance of other more important things in life usually always helps us. And if we are abundantly blessed Michael Norton with good things, sometimes we need to appreciate the abundance of troubles that come our way as well. Experiencing abundance may begin right here with this quote by Zig Ziglar, “You can have everything in life that you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” Let’s start by talking about those other things in life outside of money, that when we have them in abundance, can make such a huge difference. Appreciation is first. I have a few

friends that I stay connected to each day by phone, email, or text. And one thing we talk about most is our gratitude bucket. The more we show appreciation for what we have today, the more we will have to be grateful for tomorrow. Building others up is an absolute key to finding abundance. The more we can provide others with a little hope and encouragement, and help them to increase in their own abundance, the more that we become blessed and enriched ourselves. Unconditional love and forgiveness might just be the most powerful and best-kept secret ingredient when it comes to abundance. When we can demonstrate this trait and make it a core value, it is a gamechanger. Needs of others. When we put others above ourselves, focusing on what they need most, and do whatever we can that is within our ability to help, it will be one of the more rewarding feelings that we can experience in life. Daring to be different in a world that is “me” focused instead of “we” focused. Daring to be an agent of change in a world of conformity. Breaking through our comfort zone
to be a difference-maker in turn, makes all the difference. Asking for what we want in life always pays off. The old saying is true, “If you don’t ask, you don’t get.” People may never know, even our closest friends and family, that we are in need unless we ask for assistance. And when we do, I have found that someone is always there ready to help. New relationships, innovative ideas, and keeping things fresh will keep us on our toes. When we look for the newness in the world around us, our creativity increases and our inspiration flourishes, and when that happens abundance abounds. Celebrate the wins and the losses in life. There is nothing so big that happens along life’s journey where we couldn’t celebrate it more; nothing so small or insignificant occurs that we shouldn’t celebrate it with utter joy and enthusiasm. Elevate effort. Hope and motivation alone will never help us achieve our goals and realize our dreams. But when we elevate our effort and apply action, we begin to rise above the noise of negativity that may be going on inside our own heads. That voice that says, “No, you can’t.” We
can suppress those voices by taking the initiative and steps necessary to find whatever results and success we are striving for. You may have picked up on this by now, but the first letter of the first word in each paragraph above beginning with appreciation and ending with elevate, spells abundance. This has been my personal formula for experiencing abundance in each area of life. I actively seek to help others find abundance in mind, body, and spirit. Here’s the recap. Equity markets wave yellow flag
R
ecent stock market headlines seem contrary to the real economy … or maybe they are predictions. Investors can choose opposing rationale FINANCIAL and find justifiSTRATEGIES cation in print virtually anywhere. Are investors focused on inflation, valuations, too much tech, too much debt or tax hikes? Can you sell your real estate for 10% over asking Patricia Kummer price? Should you buy crypto currency? Or will the economic growth and corporate earnings justify any investment? Technology stocks were the place to be in 2020. Now they are pulling down portfolio returns, and the bulls have moved to financials and health care.¹ It is difficult to know if you have a green light or a red light to equity investing these days. Several analysts suggest a yellow light may be more appropriate, meaning proceed with cau-
tion.² Financial planners will tell you never to proceed without a well-thought-out plan, especially in these uncertain times. Otherwise, you could end up with investor whiplash trying to keep ahead of the market fluctuations. I see this economic predicament: The economy is growing; therefore, equities should be a good investment, right? Especially as bond yields are set to rise but still remain stubbornly low. But wait. What about current high stock valuations, aren’t I buying high? And what about the burgeoning federal deficit fueling growth, will that bring inflation? The list of uncertainty goes on. Will there be an infrastructure deal and a tax increase yet this year? On the other hand, wouldn’t reopening the economy bring better growth and consumer spending? Perhaps all of the above are true which is why the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde stock market is getting the yellow light. This is a strange time, where we thought the economic recovery from an unprecedented pandemic would be predictable. And who
would have thought that inflation is coming from shortages such as not enough computer chips to build cars, and a housing shortage, rather than the flood of free money recently pumped into the economy. There are some things that we do know and that could be a good place to start. Then you can build a strategy. We believe equity ownership remains valuable, especially over long periods of time. We believe interest rates will not decrease again in this business cycle, but rather will start to increase. We know tax rates have been artificially low since the Bush tax cuts in 2001 and 2003. Sector rotation is alive and well with commodities up in price and technology lagging.¹ Yet the majority of corporate earnings beat expectations, and investment outlook for this equity cycle is strong. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) last month was the largest positive surprise on record. Bloomberg states that “nearly 60% of the month-overmonth increase was comprised of just five components — used cars,

In “Residents worry as city mulls future of Geneva Village,” The South Platte Independent, David Gilbert, June 10, it was reported that the fund for Geneva Village “had more than $630,000 in cash at the beginning of 2009 … but city council made several transfer from Geneva Village into the general fund between 2009 and 2013.” Because of the Great Recession, a total of “$630,000” was withdrawn. With very modest transfers back to the Geneva Village fund, the fund is “still $455,220 shy of the total amount withdrawn.” At the federal level, for over 50 years, both Republican and Democratic administrations have withdrawn hundreds of millions from Social Security that has not been paid back. It seems that, at every level, money allocated for the welfare of the people, who need it most, is taken by governments, and not fully paid back. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Take care of elderly Low-income residents are already being moved out of city housing. Even with a stipend from the city, some people are finding it difficult to find decent, affordable apartments. Now, with Geneva Village likely to be on the chopping block, where will the elderly poor go? May I suggest that the City of Littleton convert the East Elementary School property to low-income units for families and seniors? The nice playground areas could be kept as park space. Should a city provide affordable housing for its residents? Yes! Seniors who raised families here and supported the businesses and schools should be able to remain here. Low-to-moderate-income residents should be able to stay in a safe, vibrant city. It seems the wealthy buy up modestly priced homes only to convert them to McMansions. A city should value all of its population. We need to show the elderly and the poor that we care, not frightening them by removing safety nets. Kathryn Skosich Littleton

Linda Johnson 1948 - 2021
Linda Johnson, 72, passed away peacefully at her home June 10th, 2021, following a brief illness with ALS.
and developed a real passion for medicine. Linda’s daughter Elizabeth married and moved to England in 2003 and Linda enjoyed several trips to Europe.
Born Linda Hunt in Denver in 1948 to parents Zula and Ray Hunt, she lived her life in Littleton and Centennial and her heart was also often in Creede: She was a true Colorado Native. Having attended and graduated from Littleton High School Class of 66, Linda worked at Milner’s Bakery and at the Crestwood Restaurant on Littleton Boulevard where she met and married her first husband, Edmond Tardy in 1970. The following year she and Ed had their daughter Elizabeth. Linda raised Elizabeth as a single mom but found time to be part of the Mustang Club and had several interesting side jobs that would bring her into contact with so many life-long friends. For 28 years Linda worked at Safeway where she met Delton Johnson: they married in 1988 and her stepsons Todd and Tyler, and stepdaughter Tiffany came into her life. After retiring from Safeway Linda briefly worked at Lafarge and eventually went back to School in 2004 to qualify as a Medical Assistant. As an MA she worked at four different doctors’ offices in the South Metro area
Throughout all of Linda’s life friendship was at the centre of her being. She loved meeting and getting to know people, from all walks of life and backgrounds. She had a special place in her heart for her best friend Darla Wolcott. Linda will probably be best remembered for her love of animals. She rescued any dog or animal in need that wondered into her path and in the latter years grew to love Dachshunds. Linda was a vivacious person, did not shy away from what she believed in and worked very hard over her life. Linda is survived by her brother, Jim, her sister, Sue, her husband Delton, and her two dogs, Sully and Sadie. She will be missed by many, but especially her daughter Elizabeth. Dana Paul Crocker, also known to many as “Daytona Dana”, age 58, of Littleton, CO passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully, on May 29, 2021. Born October 4, 1962 and a native to Colorado where he lived in Aurora, CO until age 23 then moved to Thousand Oaks, CA until 1999, before returning to the mile-high state. He is survived by his daughter, Shanda Tillman (fiancé Chris) of Rifle, CO; grandson, Ryatt Hunter; mother, Paula (Husband Leon) Meurer of Parker, CO; father Dave (Wife Kay) Crocker of Foxfield, CO; stepmother Jo Doornbos of Paradise Valley, AZ; brother Darren (Wife Lacy) Crocker of Brighton, CO; brother Vernon Doornbos of Parker, CO; sister Susie (Husband Louis) LoSasso of Aurora, CO; nephew Colton (fiancée Meghan) Crocker, niece Kayla Doornbos, nephew Joey LoSasso, and nieces Makenna Crocker and Gracie Crocker. ‘Communal experience’ of movie theaters returns

fter long stretches of staying closed amid the coronavirus pandemic, the nation’s major movie theater chains reopened locations in recent months. And with capacity restrictions on businesses now lifted around the Denver metro area, the traditional moviegoing experience appears to be on its way to a full return. It’s a change that could help people’s “reintegration” into socializing, said Vincent Piturro, a professor of film and media studies at Metropolitan State University of Denver. “If you haven’t seen friends in a year and a half: ‘Hey, let’s see a movie.’ It’s a sort of a soft landing for socialization,” Piturro said. The Regal and Cinemark theater chains have reopened locations in Colorado, and nearly all of AMC’s Denver-area theatres reopened at the end of 2020 or in the first few weeks of this year. Those AMC theaters had closed in March 2020. “I believe most or all reopened for a period of time in the summer and fall of 2020 and then closed again in accordance with local directives,” said Ryan Noonan, a spokesperson for AMC Theatres. As of May 16 this year, several Denver metro counties are now operating in what they call “level clear,” generally with no local restrictions — and that’s likely to continue unless things take a turn for the worse. Some counties, such as Douglas, had already been living under no local restrictions. AMC theater capacities are still slightly reduced, with ticketing systems blocking the spots on either side of a party’s seating — but aside from that small precaution, the theaters may remind crowds of how moviegoing felt before the pandemic. Seeing movies again may serve as a “boon to our psyches” on the way to returning to normalcy, Piturro said. “We’ve gone to movies our whole lives — we may not have gone to bars our whole lives or certain restaurants our whole lives,” but movies were a constant presence, Piturro said.

Public health officials strongly encourage anyone who is not fully vaccinated to wear a mask in indoor public settings and to avoid large gatherings. Generally, indoor settings pose a higher COVID-19 risk than outdoor settings, particularly when social distancing is difficult and when customers are inside for extended periods of time, said the Colorado State Joint Information Center, which takes questions for the state public-health department. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists the risks of certain activities depending on whether individuals are vaccinated. Coloradans ages 12 and older can get vaccinated, and more than 1,400 vaccine providers are located across the state, according to the center. the pandemic?” said Darrin Duber-Smith, an expert on marketing at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Streaming services, such as Netflix and Disney+, had served as competition for theaters long before the pandemic, Piturro said. Theater attendance was declining for several years before COVID-19, Piturro and DuberSmith pointed out. Fighting to adapt, theaters have made changes in recent years such as adding morecomfortable chairs and serving alcohol and higher-end food — trying to “increase the luxury,” Duber-Smith said. One feature that “really took off during the past year” is AMC’s private theater rentals, said Noonan, the AMC spokesperson. That’s a program that allows customers to reserve an entire auditorium for a private party of up to 20 people. “The moviegoing experience is just that: It’s an experience. It’s going out. It’s an event. You can’t duplicate that at home,” Piturro said, pointing to the “oohs and ahhs” and “the
communal experience.” ‘Will they go out?’ In the long term, though, the pandemic may serve as “a nail in the coffin” for the theater industry in its current form, Duber-Smith said. Amid changing consumer habits, he’s expecting a “bailout,” where movie-production companies will “vertically integrate” by buying out theaters, keeping them running so movie producers can still profit from them. “Is (the industry) going to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels? I don’t think so,” Duber-Smith said, adding that even the pre-pandemic level of activity wasn’t adequate. Piturro, the film professor, takes a more optimistic view, arguing that movies aren’t going to have to compete with online services but, rather, will compete with other forms of in-person entertainment such as baseball games or the opera. “I see younger crowds (likely) going to the movies in record numbers and the older crowd, without kids, going back to the theaters as well, especially whose kids have left the home,” Piturro said. “The wild-card is the middle-age demographic: those with kids at home.
Will they go out to the movies? They were the group that stayed home in bigger numbers in the pre-COVID years. This is the group that we are unsure about, and this is the group that other entertainment venues will vie for. “Still, either way, I see a positive trend in moviegoing in the near future,” Piturro said, noting that “the longterm prospects are a bit cloudier.” Piturro envisions theater crowds having a “spillover effect,” bringing more patrons to nearby bars and restaurants before or after they attend a movie. “I think that’s healthy for the overall economy,” Piturro said. Duber-Smith expressed skepticism about whether increased numbers of theater patrons will help shopping centers to rebound, though. He expects the theater industry itself to shrink although some theaters may expand. “Overall, I think you’re going to see a reduction in the number of movie theaters,” Duber-Smith said. People won’t fully return to movie theaters in the next few months, Piturro expects. He noted his own concerns about COVID-19 even though

For now, he’s anticipating delving back into that environment. “For me, there’s nothing better than sitting in a dark theater … getting lost in a world for 2 1/2 hours is really one of the great experiences for me,” Piturro said.

After Englewood’s school board changed the name of the school district’s athletic stadium last year in honor of Randy Penn — a longtime Englewood athletic coach, teacher and former mayor who died at age 71 last September — the historic figure will soon be remembered at a memorial event at that stadium. Penn Services will begin at 5 p.m. Aug. 21 at Randy Penn Stadium, located on The Englewood Campus at 3800 S. Logan St., home to Englewood High School. The event is open to the public, said Debbie Penn, Randy’s widow.
Debbie Penn asked that the public wear black, blue or white, and the dress code is casual to account for the August heat. The family would like attendees in the stadium stands by 5 p.m. Penn, who left a lasting mark on young athletes and students for decades, passed away on Sept. 3. Penn began teaching in Englewood Schools in 1981 and remained with the district until 2008, where he coached Pirates sports including football, swimming and track. He served as Englewood’s mayor from 2011 through 2015 and then moved into leadership of the Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce before retiring in spring 2019. Englewood Schools Superintendent Wendy Rubin commented on Penn’s legacy around the time the school board renamed the stadium in October. “In all my life, I’ve never met someone so committed to their community and their schools and to lifting up those around them,” Rubin said. Fast starts are always good for a team in any sport. Cherry Creek’s girls soccer team stunned Arapahoe and many in the crowd at the Stutler Bowl June 18 by scoring three goals in the first 3:48 of the game and went on to notch a 5-2 victory over the Warriors in a quarterfinal state playoff game. The Bruins (11-1) faced second-seeded Broomfield (11-0-1) in one of the semifinal games on June 23 at Englewood High School while top-seeded Valor Christian (11-0-1) battled Rock Canyon (11-1)in the other semi. It didn’t take Creek long to start its scoring as Kelley Francis pushed a header into the goal just 53 seconds into the game. Alyssa Glover scored for Creek a minute, 35 seconds later and Masen Frey pushed the Bruins ahead 3-0 with 36:12 still to play in the first half. Addie Follett and Francis’ second goal of the game gave Creek a 5-1 halftime lead and Arapahoe’s Paige Foa scored the lone goal in the second half to account for the final score as the Bruins beat their Centennial League rivals for the third time this season. Francis had two goals and an assist in the game while Follett added three assists to her one goal for five points. “We just came out with so much intensity that Arapahoe just did not come back from and that’s what set us apart was those three goals,” said Francis. “We all knew if was going to be a different game because it was a playoff game. We played them three times and beat them twice before but coming out like that took away all the nerves.” Creek head coach Dave Gamelin was concerned having to play Arapahoe for a third time. “I was so worried about this game,” he admitted. “They adjusted to us and I know they know us but we have a strong team this year and I couldn’t be prouder of the girls and the way they handled this game and everyone that got on the field performed. “That start just doesn’t

happen. We have the skills and came out on fire. You also have to have a little bit of luck to finish every single one of your chances. That was fantastic. That Arapahoe team is a strong team.” Arapahoe finished the season with a 9-3 record with all the losses coming to Creek. “This game is about limiting the space and taking advantage of the opponents in space,” said Arapahoe coach Mark Hampshire. “I give Creek credit. Their offense is the best offense we’ve seen all year. “They have some incredible talented young ladies up high in their front line but I think we matched up better than the score indicated. We didn’t give them anything in the second half, and we had some good offensive opportunities. We only have five seniors and we have a lot returning. They are going to be a force to be reckoned with next year.”

Mountain Vista is the only unbeaten team in the Class 5A, double elimination baseball state tournament after the Golden Eagles scored 10 runs in the third inning on June 19 to defeat Valor Christian,14-3. Ponderosa is unbeaten in the Class 3A tournament in Pueblo after the Mustangs collected a 1411 win over Holy Family on June 19. And Lutheran has a loss but is still alive in the Class 3A state tourney being held at Frederick High School. The Golden Eagles (16-4) will play Fairview (16-4) in a 9:30 a.m. semifinal game June 24 at All-Star Park while Valor Christian (16-4) will face Fort Collins (16-5) in a 1:30 p.m. elimination game on June 24. The Golden Eagles, the 2018 state champs, will have to lose two games in the tournament which
continues on June 25 to not win the state championship. Ponderosa scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to remain undefeated in the Class 4A tournament and the Mustangs (18-2) will have to wait to see which team they will play on June 26 knowing they will have to be beaten twice. Lutheran (19-1) will face Faith Christian (16-3) at 10 am. on June 25 in a game that will determine which team continues to play. The state Class 5A baseball tournament this season is a little unusual without two of the perennial state contenders not in the eight-team, double elimination tourney. Cherry Creek, an eight-time state champion, and 2019 winner and three-time champ Regis Jesuit were eliminated in regional
state playoff games on June 15. Valor’s Radek Birkholz limited Creek to one hit in five innings and got three hits himself in a 10-0 victory over the Bruins in the Region 8 title game. Legacy downed Regis, 7-3, to win the Region 4 title. In other 5A regional contests, Heritage scored in the bottom of the ninth inning on Christian Ramirez’ run batten in for a 1-0 win over Rock Canyon in the Region 1 championship game. Heritage downed Fairview 8-1 in the first game of the double elimination state tournament but then lost 11-7 to Mountain Vista and 6-5 to Fort Collins. Mountain Vista’s Canon Humphreys had three RBI in a 10-0 victory over Brighton in the finals of the Region 3 meet. Brighton had advanced with a 10-4 victory

Girls Lacrosse Semifinal games are set for June 21 with Colorado Academy (11-0) going against ThunderRidge (11-1) and Regis Jesuit (8-4) facing Valor Christian (10-1).Winners will advance to the June 23 championship game. In quarterfinal matches played on June 19, Colorado Academy whipped Air Academy, 19-3, and ThunderRidge knocked off perennial power Cherry Creek, 13-12. Regis Jesuit defeated Fairview, 11-7, and Eliza Osburn had five goals in Valor’s 17-7 triumph over Kent Denver.

Concerts under the stars are welcomed back ... and most are free for families. Think picnics, Colorado’s gorgeous summer nights, LIVE music of all kinds ... (we’ll probably add more in future issues — here’s what we know today — happy tidings): • Littleton Museum concerts are held on the big lawn under the stars at Gallup Street’s Ketring Park, sponsored by the Friends of the Littleton Library/Museum, tend towards folk/rock and draw a family crowd, many with picnic suppers in hand. All on Wednesdays, the first concert is scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on July 14 and will feature Faces West, “a fiery blend of rock and blues,” with
Faces West, a band that performs rock and blues, will appear on July 14 starting at 6:30 p.m. on the lawn of the Littleton Museum.

Notice is hereby given that Littleton Public Schools in the county of Arapahoe will on or about July 20, 2021 pay retainage and make final settlement with Flintco, LLC for BID PACKAGE #09 Kitchen and Nutrition CM/GC Services partial release of retainage for work completed Summer 2020. Any person, co-partnership, association of persons, company or corporation that has furnished labor, material, team hire, sustenance, provisions, provender or other supplies used or consumed by the contractor identified above or any subcontractor thereof in or about the performance of the work contracted to be done or that has supplied rental machinery, tools, or equipment to the extent used in the prosecution of the work whose claim therefore has not been paid, by the contractor or subcontractor, must file a verified statement of the amount due and unpaid on account of such claim, which statement must be filed on or before July 20, 2021. Claims must be submitted to the Board of Education to Littleton Public Schools at the school district’s Property Management Department, 5776 S.
