phill@ourcoloradonews.com If firming muscles or losing weight on a solo basis is a real bummer then working out as a team might just be the ticket to health and fitness. “There’s a synergy that happens when you have people exercising next to you,” said Mary Nein, who owns Woodland Fitness, a 24-hour workout facility. To add oomph to 2014 resolutions, the facility takes a team approach to this year’s fitness contest, Thinner Winner, a twist on the Biggest Loser contest of the past. “Peer pressure is pretty amazing,” Nein said. “There’s something to be said about somebody waiting at the gym for you.” The contest kicks off Jan. 11 with weigh-ins and caliper testing to measure body fat. From there, entrants square off into four-person teams, each with a collective goal. This year’s contest includes a personal trainer for each team. “I can see a little competition going on among the personal trainers,” Nein said. The trainers will design a nutrition plan as well as a workout regime, each based on the contestant’s medical record and history

With the team approach, the contest taps into the competitive spirit as the innate cheerleader. “It’s going to be energy-packed because everybody is going to be drawing off each other,” Nein said. In addition to the machines, contestants have a choice of 100 fitness classes. “The hardest thing about making fitness your lifestyle is finding something you can do consistently that you don’t just hate,” Nein said. “Just find a class that doesn’t feel like you’re working out.” A one-hour Zumba class, for instance, burns 900 calories. “A normal diet for a woman is 1,200 calories,” Nein said.
The contest offers equal opportunities. “The contest winner loses the most percentage of their own body fat,” Nein said. “That means trim people can participate, too. It’s not about pounds, necessarily. A lot of people will be gaining muscle mass which weighs more but takes up less space.” An eight-week contest that ends March 9, Thinner Winner includes the personal trainer, the classes, use of the equipment, child care and 24/7 access. The fee for each member of the team is $49 for Woodland Fitness clients and $99 for non-members. The Body continues on Page 10

An old idea with a new twist, Hikes for Your Health comes with a teaser to couch potatoes as well as the physically-fit. “We want to give people an opportunity to go outside,” said Micelle Wheatley, superintendent at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. With 14 miles of trails available, along with rangerguided hikes, the program is a collaboration of the national park, Community Partnership and Friends of the Fossil Beds. In a time when the universal New Year’s resolution involves some form of improvement, the collaborators zero in on the one about health. “I think it’s often forgotten that parks are places where people can exercise,” Wheatley said. “We’re inviting our neighbors, people in Teller County, to participate in this program. This is a park in many people’s back yards.” The first hikes are Jan. 15 and 18 while resolutions are still fresh with possibilities. “Why not provide an opportunity for people to be with other people, to be outside in a beautiful setting?” Wheatley said. Lane is new firefighter at NETCO By Pat Hill
phill@ourcoloradonews.com Seeking excitement rather than a desk job to earn a paycheck, Dalton Lane went for the risk factor. A firefighter and paramedic with Northeast Teller County Fire Protection District, Lane, 30, is settled into a career characterized by the adrenaline rush. On a recent day in late December, Lane raced to respond to a 911 call to check on a possible carbon-monoxide leak, which turned out to be a false alarm. “All kinds of weird stuff go on here,” he said. “That’s what I enjoy about it.” The newest addition to NETCO, Lane is a graduate of Woodland Park High School and married to his high-school sweetheart, Tessa. Before discovering his niche, Lane earned an associate’s degree from Pikes Peak Community College. “I wasn’t one of the kids who grew up wanting to be a firefighter,” he said. “But I knew I didn’t want an ordinary job.”
A chat with a firefighter in Colorado Springs piqued his interest. “It fit my personality; I like doing new things all the time, get bored easily,” he said. “So firefighting sounded like a great job.” He started by volunteering for NETCO and was subsequently hired by the Cripple Creek Fire Department. “It’s busy up there just because it’s a casino town, with gambling all night and lots of alcohol-related calls,” he said. “We’re up during the night more than we are here.” While a Cripple Creek firefighter, Lane earned certification as a paramedic that involved commuting to Colorado Springs for two years and completing 750 hours of hospital and ambulance training. “It’s something I wanted to do,” he said. “That side of the job interested me. But it was a long two years.” With an ongoing commitment to Cripple Creek, which granted him a six-week maternity/paternity leave, Lane is working temporarily in both sides of the county, with plans to work solely

In 48-hour shifts Lane incorporates continuing education, participation in community events and kitchen-patrol duty. “That’s another thing I love about
this job, being around my friends, cooking together,” he said. The Lanes have four children, 7, 5, 2 and a new baby.

Marijuana sales begin in Colorado By Danny Summers
Dsummers@ourcoloradonews.com Those who are 21 and older and have a valid photo ID, can legally buy marijuana in the state of Colorado, a law that went into effect on Jan. 1. But those who reside in El Paso or Teller counties, will have to drive to Pueblo or Denver to obtain the drug from a licensed dispensary. So far, nine municipalities and seven counties in the state are allowing retail sales. However, all of the municipalities in El Paso County and Teller County have either opted out or put a moratorium on the issue. Amendment 64 was passed by Colorado voters in November 2012. It allows for state residents to purchase up to one ounce of marijuana. Out of state guests can purchase
only a quarter of an ounce. Selling marijuana in any form without a license remains illegal. Denver was issued 34 retail marijuana business licenses on Dec. 23. Statewide that number stands at 136, with most being in the Denver area. State officials also mailed licenses for 31 producers of marijuana-infused products and 178 marijuana cultivation facilities. Most of those businesses with state permits won’t be open immediately because of local licensing requirements. The law requires that the marijuana legally sold must be tracked from seed to sale. In December, officials from the state Department of Revenue said the system won’t be able to start tracking marijuana weights until after the

buds are harvested off the plant. One of the ways of tracking the pot is with the radio frequency identification system. Fox Run resident Craig Fleischmann is an account manager for Extend Data Solutions, which is based in Centennial. “We’re getting a lot of inquiries at my company,” Fleischmann said. “Hopefully it will turn into sales opportunities for us.” Fleischmann added that the cost of the device is about $3,000. The Colorado Springs City Council opted out in July. Manitou Springs put a moratorium on sales, but that expires Jan. 31, paving the way for legal sales. In September, the town of Palmer Lake put a moratorium on the issue, repealing an ordinance that was passed by the town council in August. The issue, as it relates to Amendment 64, will now be left up to the voters next April. “We want what’s best for the political process,” said town council member Dr. Michael Maddox. “We want a victory for the electoral process.” The state has more than 500 medical marijuana dispensaries that require a doctor’s clearance before patients can purchase pot. Only a fraction of those dispensaries applied to sell to retail customers; a change that requires them to either ban customers younger than 21 or keep separate inventories — and entrances — for patients under 21 and adult recreational users. The idea that people will be allowed to smoke on street corners and sporting events is simply not true. Amendment 64 does not permit the consumption of marijuana openly and publicly. It must be done at home. Under the law, an adult can consume marijuana on private property unless a property owner prohibits it. In addition, employers can restrict employees’ marijuana use.

phill@ourcoloradonews.com Struck down by cancer as well as a stroke, Kay Castle is collecting on a lifestyle of paying it forward. One of Woodland Park’s best-known advocates for veterans, Castle lives to give back, chiefly through the nonprofit organization Welcome Home, Warrior. Veteran of the Vietnam War, Castle is medically-retired from working as a drug and alcohol counselor for the Veterans Administration, which has covered 100 percent of her care. Cancer-free today, nonetheless Castle continues to suffer the effects of the stroke and returns periodically for treatment at the VA hospital in South Dakota, her former place of employment. While recuperating at home, Castle talks about the genesis of Welcome Home, Warrior and her role in the nonprofit organization, founded in 2007 by Donna Finicle. “This war is worse than Vietnam because of the longevity,” Castle said. “Soldiers have more problems with relationships with their families, with their children.” As a result, the organization’s mission is to help families cope with the psychological impacts of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. “Soldiers are back and forth, back and forth, to this war,” Castle said. “And it’s not over yet.” While some soldiers are deployed three and four times, others

Twain on risk vs. return in tech investing “Prophesy is a good line of business, but it is full of risks.” __ Mark Twain When considering printing technology, no one knew those risks better than Mark Twain. His pet project, the Paige Compositor, nearly sent him and his family tumbling into bankruptcy and never did see mass production. But the former printer’s devil would never give up on the idea of using new inventions to enhance the presentation of the written word. He would have been awe-struck with the possibilities of news aggregators, interactive novels, and new and improved display technology. But he most certainly would have wanted to get in on the ground floor of the most promising of the lot. And he would have promoted it vigorously. “All other inventions of the human brain sink pretty nearly into commonplaces contrasted with this awful mechanical miracle. Telephones, telegraphs, locomotives, cotton gins sewing machines, Babbage calculators, jacquard looms, perfecting presses, Arkwright’s frames – all toys, simplicities! The
Paige Compositor marches alone and in the far lead of human inventions,” wrote Twain in letter to his brother Orion, in 1889. The Paige Compositor, an automatictypesetting machine invented by James W. Paige, was designed to save time in the printing process. The well-known author invested as much as $300,000 in before pulling the plug on the project. “Though the Paige Compositor was faster than the Linotype, its 18,000 parts were prone to malfunction. Paige’s invention exhibited superior technological achievement, but its price and temperamental nature
made it unattractive to a business world that had already embraced the Linotype. Still, it is regarded today as one of the finest examples of nineteenth century mechanical engineering,” notes The Mark Twain House & Museum, where the only remaining one in existence resides in the basement. It has never been taken apart since it was loaned to the museum by the Merganthaler Linotype Company and installed there in 1958, for fear it may be impossible to put together again. In addition to his investment in the compositor, Twain is also credited with writing the first novel in America to be written on a typewriter. Twain, in his autobiography remembered that first as the manuscript for “Tom Sawyer” in 1874 but typewriter historian Darryl Rehr holds that it was “Life on the Mississippi” in 1882. Regardless, the Remington Typewriter Company seized the opportunity to drop his name to promote its product for years following the disclosure in his autobiography. The Twain (Clemens) House in Hartford Connecticut was one of the first to have a
telephone in that city and revered author was known to pal around with eccentric inventor of alternating current, Nikola Tesla, who had a lab in Colorado Springs and another one in Cripple Creek. “I have just seen the drawing and description of an electrical machine lately patented by Mr. Tesla and sold to Westinghouse Company, which will revolutionize the whole electric business of the world,” wrote Twain in his notebook in 1888. Later Twain visited Tesla’s lab and they both frequented The Players Club in New York and attended parties with contemporaries such as a Teddy Roosevelt, Rudyard Kipling, and John Muir. Tesla’s inventions, of course, have made possible some of the wondrous developments of the modern day. Like a “Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court,” Twain already saw such possibilities. But, as he was also fond of mentioning, “The more you explain it, the more I don’t understand it.”

Upon the news of Cody’s death, tributes were made by such dignitaries as George V (King of the United Kingdom), Kaiser Wilhelm II (the last German emperor and King of Prussia) and President Woodrow Wilson. Cody’s funeral was in Denver at the Elks Lodge Hall. His funeral procession was led by Wyoming governor John B. Kendrick, a long-time friend of Cody’s. Buffalo Bill’s grave sits atop Lookout Mountain, one of the larger foothills that overlooks Golden. According to the web site www.Buffalobill.org, Cody was a frequent traveler to Colorado. He first came here in 1859 as part of the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Colorado was still a territory at that time. Cody passed through the new town of
Denver on his way to the gold fields near Black Hawk, where he searched for gold for two months. Legend has it that upon his return to Kansas he stopped in the small Colorado town of Julesburg where he was recruited to ride in the Pony Express. Most of his time with the Pony Express was spent in Kansas, although occasionally he traveled across northeast Colorado. The Pony Express route did not go to Denver but cut north into Nebraska and Wyoming. By the 1870’s Cody’s early Wild West show was getting rave reviews. He performed in a local Denver opera house with the Buffalo Bill Combination. He continued to tour through Colorado, performing at the Central City Opera (still in operation) and at another opera house in Georgetown. After Buffalo Bill organized his Wild West show, he visited Denver and Colorado many times. The web site states that Buffalo Bill performed 35 times in Colorado between 1886 and 1916. Annie Oakley performed in his show as a sharp shooter. According to the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, Buffalo Bill performed his show in Colorado Springs 11 times. Cody was more than a showman. In ad-
dition to his time with the Pony Express, he was also a freight carrier on a wagon train, a bullwhacker for a wagon train, fought in the Civil war for the Army, was an Army scout in many of the Indian Wars, was a fighter and friend of Indians, and of course, a buffalo hunter. Buffalo Bill traveled the world. In 1887 he performed in London in celebration of the Jubilee year of Queen Victoria. He toured Europe for the first time in 1889. In 1893 he set up an exhibition near the Chicago World’s fair that greatly contributed to his popularity. In 1896, he founded the city of Cody, Wyoming. By the early part of the 20th century, the world’s fascination with the Wild West had begun to wane. In 1913, Cody’s Wild West show went bankrupt, so he formed a motion picture company to produce a film on the Indian Wars. Cody has remained a popular figure in American history. In 1960, when the city of Buffalo, New York, was granted a team into the old American Football League, the team picked “Bills” as the mascot in honor of Buffalo Bill. Buffalo Bill Cody is a true slice of Americana and someone who will not soon be forgotten.
I have discussed driving here before, but I thought this list I found might be of interest. It was published in the local newspapers in the early summer of 1921, not just for tourists, but for the locals too. They wanted the locals to be a good example for the summer visitors. The states, counties and cities were still at work on their driving rules. Here in many cities like Denver and Colorado Springs, they even wanted the tourists to have special tags on their cars to show that they had been granted the right to drive by the proper rules. Here are the rules as follows: Observe the speed limits. Fifteen miles an hour in the business district, 10 at intersections and 35 in the rural areas. The basic fine was $25 for the first ticket and a possibility of 30 days in jail for repeaters! Do not pass a street car that is putting on, or taking off passengers, unless they are at a designated “safe” stop. Dim your headlights when near street cars, or meeting other cars. Turn off your motor when your vehicle is parked. They had the “right hand rule,” where the car approaching on the driver’s right had right-of-way at intersections with or without stop signs. They insisted on having adequate brakes to stop your vehicle, a horn, bell or gong to alert anyone around you if needed, two white lights in the front and a red one in the rear for night operation, another white light to illuminate your number tag, and a drip pan to go
under the motor while it is parked. Children younger than 15 are not to drive the vehicle. Lock your car when it is parked in the open or in a public area. This does not mean what you might think, as I told about a while back here. A real padlock and chain was needed to prevent the vehicle from being stolen. When backing out of a drive, you needed to be sure no one was in danger of being run over, as well as waiting for any traffic on the street. No driving through a funeral procession or parade. Use your arm to signal drivers around you of your intention to turn or stop. Back then the driver was usually out in the open where other drives could see them. Park as close to the edge of streets as possible, and observe signs posted about areas where you are not to park. Some of these rules are still with us in many forms. The last driving suggestion on the list was to prevent accidents by observing reasonable speed limits on the country roads as well as on the city streets.
‘Buffalo Bill’ Cody and the Wild West Even though I was born in Albuquerque, raised in southern California, and lived in Colorado the last 13 years, I am not much of Wild West guy. Sure, I have visited Little Bighorn National Battlefield (the site of “Custer’s Last Stand”) in Montana and spent a day or two at Calico Ghost Town near Barstow, Calif. I panned for gold with my son in Virginia City, Nevada, and stomped my feet at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo. For good measure, when I worked for the California Angels in the 1990s I was honored to have had several conversations with Cowboy legend Gene Autry, who owned the Angles for more than 30 years. I even consider the 1985 movie “Silverado” among my top 150 favorites. One of the Wild West guys I have always been intrigued with is William Frederick Cody, better known as “Buffalo Bill” to most of the rest of the world. He had a Wild West name and lived a wild life. On Jan. 10, 1917, Buffalo Bill, at age 70, died of kidney failure surrounded by family and friends at his sister’s home in Denver. The day before, Cody was baptized into the Catholic Church by Father Christopher Walsh of the Denver Cathedral. Buffalo Bill, who became a Knight Tem-

Sleep deprivation may contribute to weight gain, obesity (Editor’s Note: This is part 1 of a 3 part series on sleep deprivation.) All right, I want each of you out there who has committed to losing weight in 2014 to raise their hand. Come on, get that hand up. That’s what I thought. There’s a whole bunch of you. Let me go on record as endorsing your effort. Being overweight or clinically obese has a whole host of negative health consequences. In support of your effort, let me suggest you pay some attention to an area of your well-being that you probably have no idea has a major impact on your weight … sleep. Yes, remarkably, sleep deprivation may be a contributing factor to both weight gain and obesity. “What most people do not realize is that better sleep habits may be instrumental to the success of any weight management plan,” says John Winkelman, MD, PhD, medical director of the Sleep Health Center at Brigham and Women’s
Hospital. Michael Thorpy, MD director of the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center at Montefiore Medical Center in New York adds, “Any American making a resolution to lose weight should probably consider a parallel commitment for getting more sleep.” In addition to having an impact on weight issues, WebMD claims that sleep deprivation can reduce your daytime performance and alertness by as much as 32 percent, impair your memory and cognitive ability, add stress to your primary relationships and reduce your overall quality of life. On another front, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administra-
tion estimates conservatively that drowsy driving is responsible for at least 100,000 automobile accidents each year. If that’s not motivation enough to get a good night’s sleep, a growing body of evidence links insufficient sleep to health problems such as depression, heart disease, heart attacks, hypertension, stroke and diabetes. Those are some serious issues for the estimated 50 to 70 million Americans who struggle with chronic sleep disorders and the millions more who are sleep deprived due to excessive work and social commitments. The causes of sleeplessness run the gamut from not allowing enough time for sleep to a wide variety of medical conditions and medications. Excessive worrying, depression, a poor sleep environment, working night shifts, food additives, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol can also be contributing factors. The most common symptoms of sleep deprivation are fatigue, lack of physical energy, irritability and edginess, an in-
ability to tolerate stress and difficulty with concentration and memory. Other symptoms include frequent infections, blurred vision and behavioral, learning and social problems. The amount of time a person needs to sleep changes with age and is specific to each individual. In general, newborns to 24 months old need 13 to 17 hours of sleep a night. Ten year-olds require 10 to 11 hours. Those aged 16 to 65 need 6 to 9 hours and people over 65 can get by with 6 to 8 hours of sleep. Stick with me for the next two columns to learn what the experts are suggesting as non-pharmaceutical solutions for establishing better sleep habits and where to go locally to get help if you think you may have a sleep disorder. The support for my sons’ unit in Iraq with the phone card is just one of the many wonderful outpourings of support I’ve received. Les Long, Woodland Park Editor’s Note: This letter was written to the Green Mountain Falls Board of Trustees. Dear Editor: These recommendations are based on a review of the draft Employment Agreement which was discussed at the meeting Jan. 17. General comments — The Employment Agreement as drafted is seriously flawed, dangerous, and irresponsible. Preparation was obviously rushed without thinking through the long-term ramifications of the provisions. It is unbalanced with too much favoritism for the employee with inadequate protections for the town. It puts the town over a barrel and restricts the decision-making of future boards concerning compensation and benefits. It calls for compensations and benefits that have never been offered to any employee in the past because they were not affordable considering our limited funds. Where are the funds? It goes overboard in unfairly “rewarding” a selected specific employee, over others — an action not ever deemed suitable in the history of the town. As elected trustees, board members bear the fiduciary responsibility of insur-
ing that the town remains a financiallyviable entity. This includes insuring that all taxpayers’ funds are spent wisely and avoiding unnecessary costs. The Employment Agreement, as proposed, fails to do this. I recommend board action on the agreement be tabled. No one really knows if Rob McArthur will be an effective manager and will satisfactorily perform the seven duties prescribed in Ordinance 03-2013. We can all speculate, but we will not know until he has performed the tasks. He has not performed any of those duties yet. It is totally inappropriate and dangerous for the board to promise an employee a guaranteed job for three years without first evaluating his effectiveness in that particular position. Twelve-month terms (renewable annually) are much safer for the Board to protect the Town should anything go awry. Add a Probationary Period The GMF Personnel Policy Manual states “All- full time employees are hired on a six-month probationary basis. This observation period allows the supervisor to evaluate the new employee.” Although Rob has satisfied the probationary requirement for Director of Public Works, he should now meet the probationary requirement for the new position. The manager position requires more demanding management skills and experience than the public works function. Rob has no prior experience or work record in a town-manager position. A long term Employment Agreement should not be signed until a probationary period is satisfactorily completed. Salary Delete in the ordinance “with the understanding that provisions shall be made to augment the fore-mentioned manager’s salary with project management fees, emergency management fees, and bonuses” Additional compensation for duties normally expected of a Director of Public Works is inappropriate. If future boards wish to reward the town manager n the future, they can vote to do so, while taking into consideration the current financial status of the town, but these should not be promised (or even inferred) in any Employment Agreement. As you will recall, Rob stated he
Arrest made in alleged kidnapping Teller County Sheriff ’s Office apprehends Vigil By Pat Hill phill@ourcoloradonews.com Teller County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Timothy Vigil, 42, Dec. 27 in a neighborhood between Divide and Florissant. Vigil is suspected of felony kidnapping in Colorado Springs. The FBI followed up the leads from
Colorado Springs Police Department and subsequently contacted the Teller County Sheriff’s Office requesting assistance in the possible apprehension of Vigil. Because of the fact that Vigil was considered extremely dangerous and possibly armed, the Teller County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team went to a neighborhood where it was believed that Vigil was hiding. Once information was gathered from citizens in this area, a warrant was written and submitted to an on-call judge who granted authority to apprehend Vigil. Vigil is now in custody at the Teller County Jail.
would perform as town manager with no increase in compensation. Termination — Delete the entire paragraph which promises severance payments. Severance pay and Golden Parachutes are used by large cities and corporations to induce highly-qualified and experienced managers to accept a job in a highly-competitive market for high-paid executives. This enticement is not appropriate for a small town (640 population) with a bare-bones budget. There currently is no competition for the job so extraordinary enticements such as severance payments are not needed. Previous boards discussed having a town manager but were unable to figure out how to cover the costs. The town attorney advised the board at the last meeting that they should not include anything in an employment
contract that promises funds that may not be available in the future. If a future board wishes to vote for a severance payment, it should do so considering the situation and the Town’s financial condition at the time. Do not take a chance on bankrupting the Town with promises to any employee. Administrative Leave Delete from the ordinance, “Additionally, the Manager shall be entitled to two weeks administrative leave per calendar year for extra hours worked, including evening meetings and other administrative duties.” Absolutely Ridiculous! rutus the Great Dane has found a home. Subject of a front-page story in the Dec. 25 edition of The Courier, Brutus had been staying at the Animal Care Clinic of Woodland Park. Guest of the clinic’s owner Terri Collins, the staff and David Volz, DVM, Brutus was treated at the clinic for injuries he sustained when hit by a car in Santa Fe, N.M. The dog and his owner, Larry Class, arrived on the doorstep of the clinic in October 2012. Through the kindness of the people at the clinic, in addition to Donna Zinko and James Singleton, the homeless pair found refuge. When Class died Dec. 8, Brutus came back to the clinic. Louise Peterson of Guffey knew about Brutus, initially said no when Collins reached out to her. But something nudged her to come in to the clinic and get acquainted. She came back a few times with Maia, the 4-yearold Great Dane. The bonding went so well, Peterson gave Brutus a Christmas present on Dec. 24. “He’s wonderful,” she said, the day after New Year’s. At first Maia was a bit territorial, Peterson said. “Maia is very particular about who lives in her space,” said Peterson, whose home in Guffey is 700 square feet on 35 acres. “But Maia told Brutus the rules and now they both sleep on the couch” While Brutus paced the floor the first night in his new home, he is adapting quickly. “He’s a chilled-out dog,” Peterson said. Peterson obviously loves the breed, as she earns her living sculpting bronze Great Danes. One of her pieces is near the Uncle Wilber Fountain on Tejon Street in Colorado Springs.

Sled dog racing coming to Divide in February Event will be part of 2014 Rocky Mountain State Games By Danny Summers
Dsummers@ourcoloradonews.com There is no need to head to Alaska any more to do your sled dog racing. It is coming to Divide in February. Officials with the Rocky Mountain State Games announced that they have added sled dog racing to the schedule. The Rocky Mountain State Games Dog Sled Race is set for Feb. 8 and 9. The organizers of the event hope to hold it annually. The two days of competition will take place at the Hayden Divide Community Park at the intersection of Highway 24 and Highway 67. The sled dog racing kicks off the 13th annual Rocky Mountain State Games. The event takes place the same weekend that the 2014 Olympic Winter Games begin in Sochi, Russia. This is the second year that the Rocky Mountain State Games has added a sport that involves both humans and their animal athletes. Last summer it was the hugely popular Dog Agility competition that attracted some 500 competitors and their four-legged athletes. The Rocky Mountain State Games dog sled race is produced by the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation. The race organizer is Colorado Mountain Mushers, which is based in Conifer. The race is sponsored by the Highlands Center in Divide. The slate of races will range from one mile to eight miles over the course. The main portion of the Rocky Mountain State Games will be held on two weekends, July 18-20 and July 25-27 at

The Sports Corp. were excited to add the dog sled race to the schedule of sports offered and produce the first sport ever held in the winter in the 13-year history of Colorado’s largest sports festival. There will be eleven divisions open to Colorado mushers and their dogs. Admission to watch the event is free to the public. The races will be staged from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. There will also be dog sled demonstrations held in Acacia Park in downtown Colorado Springs on Feb. 7 from 5 to 9 p.m. as part of the Sochi Olympic Downtown Celebration. Spectators who want to watch the action over the two days in Divide can bring their own dogs along to enjoy the races,
but they must be kept on leashes and away from the race courses and the competing teams. Sled dog racing is a winter dog sport most popular in the Arctic regions of the United States, Canada, Russia, and some European countries. It involves the timed competition of teams of sled dogs that pull a sled with the dog driver or musher standing on the runners. The team completing the marked course in the least time is judged the winner. A sled dog race was a demonstration sport at the 1932 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York, and again at the Olympics in Oslo in 1952, but it did not gain official event status in the Games. Registration for all other sports in the
2014 Rocky Mountain State Games will open Feb. 15 by going to www.rockymountainstategames.org. In 2013, a total of 9,312 athletes from 90 Colorado cities and towns, plus competitors from several other states in select sports, took part in the 12th Rocky Mountain State Games conducted by the Colorado Springs Sports Corp. The record turnout shattered the previous mark of 7,103 athletes who competed in the 2012 Games in Colorado Springs, led by the whopping turnout of 2,754 entries in the popular Colorado In Motion 5k Run on July 26. Snow and ice postpone Woodland Park basketball games The Jan. 4 games against Vanguard Charter will be made up this week By Danny Summers
Dsummers@ourcoloradonews.com Between Christmas break and Mother Nature, the Woodland Park boys and girls basketball teams will go almost three weeks between games. Both Panthers were supposed to take to the court Jan. 4 for non-league home games against Vanguard Charter. But a snow and ice storm forced postponement of the event just hours before tipoff when Vanguard officials determined it was not safe to travel up Ute Pass. Athletic directors from both schools got together on Jan. 6 and rescheduled the game for this week. “We had a phenomenal practice on Friday and we were ready to play,” said Woodland Park boys’ coach Joel Herman. “But what can you do.” Herman is in his second season as coach of the Panthers. He’s trying to rebuild a program that has fallen on hard times in recent years. Woodland Park was 6-17 last season after winning all of six games - against 59 losses - the previous three seasons combined. But lack of numbers, and what might be perceived as a lack of commitment by players, has led to frustration at times for
Herman. “As a coach I would like to see commitment,” Herman said. “I’m at a point where I have to start playing the younger kids because I have to look at the future.” There’s no doubt that the kids who show up for practice work hard and are committed to learning the fundamentals of the game. The problem for Herman and his staff is that he has yet to have a practice where all 10 varsity players are present at the same time. The first official day of practice was Nov. 13. “It was a tough (Christmas break) because of the number of kids who have been showing up at practice,” Herman said. “We had about six to seven varsity kids Monday through Thursday of last week. We only had four kids a couple of times.” Low turnout at practice is nothing new. Last summer, only four players signed up (two of them were incoming freshman) to attend a camp at Western State. That led to the cancelation of Woodland Park’s the summer season. Woodland Park is 1-8 to start this season. As challenging as that sounds, it is actually right in line with the remaining opponents on the Panthers’ schedule: Vanguard Christian (2-5), Calhan (0-5), Sierra (1-5), Widefield (1-8), Mesa Ridge (3-6), Coronado (3-7), Harrison (2-6) and Mitchell (3-6). Photo by Paul Magnuson man said. “Sierra is young, but their coach will have them ready.” Herman believes Woodland Park’s record is a bit deceiving. “We have played some of the premier teams in the state,” the coach said. “Buena Vista, Centauri, Palmer Ridge and Canon City could go far into the playoffs. I also think Discovery Canyon is pretty good.” As a team, Woodland Park is averaging
41 points per game on offense, but surrendering 65. The Panthers’ leading scorers are junior Sam Hopfe (9.1), sophomore Dominic Cunico (8.0), senior Randy Westfall (6.2), sophomore Trey Byers (6.0), senior Keegan Harman (5.0) and junior Dakota Herman (4.1). Westfall and Hopfe are getting it done on the glass, averaging 7.2 and 6.1 rebounds per game, respectively.

Preschool Start Smart Football
This program is a proven instructional program that prepares young children, between ages 3-6 years old, for the world of organized sports without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Parents work together with their children in a supportive environment to learn all of the basic skills. Benefits include building confidence and self-esteem, fun and positive experience, preparation for future sports, quality time together for parent and child, and helps parents learn how to support and teach their child. When: 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays, and 9-10 a.m. Saturdays, Feb. 4, 8, 11, 18, 22 Where: Gateway Elementary Gym

Boys and girls in grades three through eight can register for a volleyball league. Registration deadline is Jan. 24. Cost is $48, and $44 for additional family members. American Red Cross Learn to Swim
The Learn to Swim program follows
the criteria set by American Red Cross. Descriptions of the classes are listed on the city website. Please bring a swim suit and towel. Classes are for ages 6 months to 18 years. Cost is $45 per session, $41 for additional family members. Lessons are Mondays, from 4:30-5 p.m. for Guppies and Level 3; 5-5:30 p.m. for Level 1 and Level 4; and 5:30-6 p.m. for Level 2 and Level 5/6. Session dates are Jan. 13, 27, Feb. 3, 10, 24, 25. Classes take place at Golden Bell Camp.
Family Dog Training
Learn to teach your dog good manners as well as basic obedience commands such as loose leash walking, focus, wait, come, sit, stay, down, and leave it. No dogs at first class. Instructor is Alice Roszczewski. Class is from 9-10 a.m. Saturdays, Jan. 11, 18, 25, Feb. 1, 8, 15. Cost is $150 per session.
Mat Pilates
This class works to improve core strength and flexibility. Learn to move efficiently reducing the risk of injuries, while participating in other sports and activities.
Learn the Pilates Principles and how to apply them to your daily routines. All levels welcome. Class is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the parks and recreation classroom. Colorado Hunter Education Planning on hunting in Colorado? Anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1949, must have a Hunter Education Certificate before he or she may hunt in Colorado. This course is the completion class for the internet based Hunter Education Certification by the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife. All students must take one of the internet based classes found on the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife website; wildlife.state.co.us. Classroom education is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the required live-fire is from 4-7 p.m. Cost is $10 per participant. Class is led by Tanya Sharp, Division of Parks and Wildlife.
