Thornton council backs school ballot questions Adams 12, Adams 14 seek nearly $1 billion to fix aging buildings, boost staff salaries BY MONTE WHALEY MWHALEY@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Thornton City Council this month put its weight behind financial proposals for two local school districts that total nearly $1 billion. One of those plans would prevent aging Thornton High School from structural collapse, say school officials. Adams 12 Five Star Schools Board Vice President Amira Assad-Lucas told the city council that if a “windstorm came though, Thornton would have to close down the school for safety … structural issues.” Under an $830 million bond issue, Thornton High – which opened in 1975 – would be rebuilt. “Rebuilding Thornton High would not only revitalize Ward I in Thornton, but also give value to our kids,” Assad-Lucas said. The council needed little convincing to pass two resolutions calling for voters to support thebondissue for Thorntonbased Adams 12 as well as a $114 million bond package for theAdams 14School District in Commerce City. Adams 12 is also asking for a $34.5 mill levy override to largely help boost salaries for teachers, as would a $10 million override for the Adams 14 district. SEE BALLOT, P12
