A $14 million facelift for south Washington Street in Thornton is sorely needed, say city officials. But they admit such a huge outlay is not immediately possible, meaning any improvement for the wellworn corridor will have to be piecemeal. “We need about $14 million over the next several years, but we can’t afford that,” Interim City Manager Brett Henry told city council members this week. “But we will see what we can afford.” The city is hoping a makeover will encourage more commercial investment and allow residents better access to business along south Washington, Henry said. “We want to make it more attractive for all residents,” he said. “In the end, the city will attract more sales tax.” The targeted area is primarily from 84th Avenue to Eppinger Boulevard. It’s home to about 80 businesses and almost 1,000 jobs, according to the city. The plan presented to council members calls for the city and local SEE WASHINGTON, P6
