Jefferson County has announced a possible location for a new south county library, after originally seeking community input in early 2021. The proposed site is five to six

acres of land at the Sledding Hill Park on the corner of S. Kipling Parkway and W. Ken Caryl Avenue. The land is owned by Jefferson County Open Space and would be sold to the Jefferson County Public Library, according to a press release from the county.

The original community input was on what people wanted in the new library, with the county hearing from about 1,300 people at the time. In that feedback, people generally wanted some sort of classes at the library like painting, space for personal computer use and collections

The Jefferson County Board of Education received a recommendation from district staff on Aug. 25 to close 16 elementary schools — including K-2, K-5 and K-6 schools. The district’s presentation by David Weiss, chief of schools for the District, and Lisa Relou, chief of strategy and communications, cited underenrollment as the main reason for consolidating schools. The population of school-aged children decreased by 30,000 between 2000 and 2020, Relou said.
