The Golden Police Department and surrounding community continues to mourn Officer Evan Dunn, who was killed while responding to a traffic accident Nov. 6 along Highway 58. GPD confirmed Nov. 7 that Dunn, 33, was a U.S. Army veteran and active captain in the Army National Guard. He’s survived by his wife, parents and two siblings. Dunn was remembered as an officer who “served this closeknit community with honor,” Police Chief Joe Harvey remarked in a Nov. 7 statement, adding how Dunn was “first and foremost a man of faith, loyal, steady, quiet and observant.” Dunn and his wife shared a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed camping

We can only continue doing the job he loved in his honor.” Dunn first joined GPD as a code enforcement officer, serving for a year until he entered the police academy. He graduated in July and was partnered with Officer Bethany Grusing, his field training officer, while responding to the Nov. 6 incident. Golden officials have delayed establishing a neighborhood permit parking zone along parts of Eighth Street after City Councilors raised concerns about its proposed May 1-Oct. 1 seasonality at a recent meeting. Goldenites have been considering a neighborhood permit parking zone along Eighth Street, as more visitors have been parking there to visit Clear Creek and/or downtown Golden. The street currently doesn’t have any parking restrictions, but officials have anticipated the new NPP zone would be like the one on Ninth Street. However, unlike the city’s other NPP zones, City Engineer Joe Puhr has recommended Eighth Street’s only be in effect from May 1-Oct. 1. During their Oct. 22 meeting, City Councilors voted to table a resolution establishing the Eighth Street NPP zone as some wondered whether it should be year-round or start later. Puhr said his office would rework the resolution and anticipated bringing it back to City Council for consideration “until the New Year,” he said in a Nov. 1 email. Golden conducted two neighborhood surveys along Eighth Street this summer to gauge interest in an NPP zone. Combining results from both surveys, 51% of respondents were in favor, 43% were opposed and 6% were unsure. Combined, the surveys had a 14% response rate. Based on both survey responses and community members’ feedback, Puhr and his colleagues recommended establishing most of the permitted parking spots along the eastern and central sections of Eighth Street. Some blocks would be permit parking only, while others would allow two-hour parking or a permit. The western section and side streets would be relatively unaffected to preserve existing street parking for the Golden Community Garden and other features locals enjoy, Puhr and others noted.
