Golden considering a neighborhood permit parking zone on Eighth Street BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
With more paid parking and increased enforcement downtown, Goldenites are seeing more people parking along Eighth Street between Washington Avenue and U.S. Highway 6. The street currently doesn’t have any parking restrictions, but Golden officials are considering establishing a neighborhood permit parking zone like the one along Ninth Street. Some Golden City Council members said recently they’d be in favor of doing so as long as residents supported it, and it was tailored for Eighth Street’s unique features. Matt Wempe, principal planner, said his staff would be bringing a proposal to City Council in the coming weeks based on a discussion at an Aug. 13 work session. The city conducted two neighborhood surveys along Eighth Street this summer to gauge interest in an NPP zone. Combining results from both surveys, 51% of respondents were in favor, 43% were opposed and 6% were unsure. Combined, the surveys had a 14% response rate. Councilor Bill Fisher wondered whether an NPP zone along Eighth Street could be seasonal, as the bulk of the issues seem to be in the summer. However, he added that the forthcoming Clayworks development will have long-term implications for Eighth Street’s parking, so he believed Goldenites should figure out a solution now. SEE PARKING, P9

Those who live and work along Colfax Avenue near Heritage Road should see improved intersections, completed sidewalks and better drainage once crews start a multi-year construction project this fall. The City of Golden and its partners are kicking off a four-phase construction project along Lena Gulch, spanning from the Gateway Village near Interstate 70 to Colfax Avenue and Violet Street. Overall, work will take at least three years to complete but likely more. The first phase will improve the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Heritage Road, including adding a round- U.S. Rep.
