Downtown Golden is gearing up for eight weeks of schoolhouse rock. The Miners Alley Performing Arts Center opens its “School of Rock” stage musical on July 26, featuring a cast of both adult and youth performers who play their own instruments, sing and dance. “It’s like going to a rock concert,” director Warren Sherrill said. “ … It’s a very entertaining piece of theater.” The stage musical is based on the 2003 movie of the same name and features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The show follows wannabe rock star Dewey as he poses as a substitute teacher at Horace Green prep school, and subsequently turns the straightA students into a rebellious rock Meika Qutub, center, and her “School of Rock” cast members perform “Time to Play” band.
Lookout Mountain Road will look very different in the coming years, thanks to two separate Jefferson County projects. The first is the ongoing Lookout Mountain Road study, which recently started its second round of public input and with the final recommended designs expected to be announced in October. At a July 10 open house, county officials outlined possible changes to the corridor that would improve safety for all users, including protected bike lanes and high-visibility crosswalks. The second is installing gates across the 4.1-mile roadway for overnight closures. The gates are expected to be installed in November. Jeffco Open Space and its partners are hosting an open house on the gate installation project from 6-7:30 p.m. July 31 at the Lookout Mountain Nature Center. The public, especially those who live in the area, are invited to attend and provide feedback.
