From “Choose Your Fighter” from the “Barbie” soundtrack to Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” the Golden Library was alive with the sound of music May 3 as it hosted a public recital for Bell Middle School’s orchestra club. A dozen performers — Bell sixth- and seventh graders and a few fifth graders from local elementary schools — showcased their talents on piano, violin, viola and double bass. Some pieces were individual performances while others were small-group numbers. Lauren Phillips, Bell’s orchestra teacher, explained how the performers study the instruments on their own, usually with private tutors. The orchestra club is a before-school activity, and the students selected their own pieces for the May 3 recital. Phillips and teen librarian Emily Due explained how the club hosted an informal, private recital at the library in December. The club rented out the library’s meeting room during library hours. Although it wasn’t technically open to the public, Due said several patrons wanted to watch but the room couldn’t accommodate that many people. SEE ORCHESTRA, P2
