The Lakewood City Council mapped out the future of metropolitan districts in the city at their Monday evening study session meeting, continuing a year’s work that council members hope will become a model for increased regulation over the quasi-governmental entities in the state at large. Metro districts are a type of stateauthorized locality established to create infrastructure within a private development. Through an elected board, metro districts have the authority to control homeowners’ property tax assessments, levy and collect taxes and fees and provide services and facilities in the district. There are 2,021 metro districts in the state, the Colorado Department of Local Affairs reports. An estimated 142 are in the City of Lakewood, according to state data. Lakewood and the Colorado state legislature have been working separately to institute clearer policies and greater transparency regulations following news reports that have increased scrutiny over metro districts. In some cases, the homebuilding companies that developed the metro district originally have been known to keep control of the elected board, raising conflict of

It’s a problem that Susan Fisch came to know all too well during her time on the bench in Jeffco courtrooms. Offenders would appear in front of a judge like her and be told they would receive probation. As part of that agreement, they would have a whole list of obligations to meet ranging from paying fees to submitting to drug testing. It is something that would be a lot for anyone, let alone people who are often dealing with challenges ranging from drug addiction to mental illness to extreme poverty -- and often more than one such issue. “I was often concerned that they would even get to the probation department, let alone get to a treatment program, get a job and housing and transportation and the [urinalysis tests] and all the other things you have to do,” said Fisch. It was a fear that proved to be well-warranted as Fisch would watch time and again as offenders would fail to fulfill those obligations and end up right back in court, falling further into a

interest concerns due to their role in paying off subdivision debt — right back to the homebuilding companies. The state legislature passed regulations last month that mandate greater transparency from these metro district boards. Starting in January 2022, if the bill is signed into law by Gov. Jared Polis, metro districts must disclose their debt obligations to home buyers upon sale, as well as an estimate of what they could expect to pay in property taxes.

There must be a better way, she would think to herself, before eventually honing in on a situation she feels is one of the central barriers to success for offenders when it comes to breaking that cycle: there are plenty of resources available in Jeffco but offenders too often have trouble accessing them. “The idea was to use the resources we already have - community mental health, our drug treatment providers, our Medicaid and benefit providers - and get them housed in one place,” said Fisch. Now, thanks to the collaborative effort of those providers and other county offices involved in the criminal justice led by Fisch and Jeffco Director of Justice Services Dennis Goodwin, officials say Jeffco is the first county in the Denver metro area to have such a facility. Located in the county’s Remington Building a few blocks northwest of the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Kipling Street, the Community Connections Center (C3) has served 129 people since opening last August, with that number expected to grow dramatically as the center assumes what will be its normal operations following the pandemic. According to Goodwin, the center is set up to connect its clients with everything from getting a state ID and legal documents to accessing housing and addiction services (with many of those serUnder proposed regulations in Lakewood, however, metro districts could also be required to fill their boards with 100% “endusers,” or citizens with no connection to the homebuilders, within a certain timeline. “Probably, what the ordinance would require, is that those deadlines be a part of the service plan approved by the city council,” Lakewood Public Works Director Jay Hutchison told the council Monday. “It would be an obligation of the district.” Other regulations the city council worked to define included mandating greater information disclosures to potential and current homeowners within the

Pam Pilarcik, a client resource specialist at C3 said that while it is too early to tell how successful C3 will ultimately be in keeping its clients out of the system, the response among offenders to having such a “one-stop-shop” for services has been an overwhelmingly positive one. But for her, one of the biggest benefits of the center has been how its staff has worked with public defenders to help create a plan to help offenders once they are released. “I love the fact that those defenders are working with us and allow-

ing our input as far as treatment and what we might recommend,” she said. “We have offender’s families begging and pleading that these offenders not be released to be homeless and we are able to use that information to create a plan to better suit them so that maybe they don’t end up in court again.” Although C3 is helping offenders with all sorts of needs, Pilarcik said many of the biggest successes have come on the housing front. “We have been able to recommend housing for everyone that has asked for it,” she said. “And while we’ve had some clients that did not follow through, I would say the vast majority are still in sober living or transitional housing that we recommended.” Such successes, Fisch said, benefit not only those clients but the entire community. “When you’re assisting somebody who has got these issues that creates community safety because these are people that are going to be living in our community and when they’re hooked into these resources and supported it makes the community safer,” she said. But beyond community safety, Goodwin said the program is about setting up offenders to contribute to the community growing forward and raise families that will do the same. “We’ve got to do something different than we’ve historically done,” he said. “Or at least try something different.”

The council reached a consensus on each of the city’s Development Dialogue Ad Hoc Committee’s recommendations concerning metro district regulations Monday night. The council’s comments from the meeting will be given to city staff members as they begin drafting the proposed city ordinance, City Manager Kathy Hodgson told councilmembers. An update on a possible timeline towards passing it will be given at the next council meeting, Monday, June 28. “I look forward to seeing this on first and second reading,” Skilling said, “and this being, hopefully, a model ordinance for the rest of the state.”

How Listing Agents Handle Bidding Wars: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

I have written in the past about how we handle multiple offers and bidding wars on our listings using an auction style, which we feel is best for our sellers and most fair to buyers and their agents. Regrettably, very few listing agents handle multiple offers and bidding wars the way we do. Most are sticking with the “highest and best” approach, in which buyers submit an abovelisting-price offer without knowing what other buyers are offering. Usually agents maintain that their sellers won’t let them reveal the competing offers, but I find that hard to believe. Have they even had an honest discussion with their sellers about that? I have that discussion with every seller who hires me and invariably they agree that full transparency about offers in hand is not only going to net them the highest price for their home but is also fairest to the buyers. I have written in the past that 4 days on the MLS before going under contract

However, recently we have modified our policy because of more buyers submitting early offers which are too good to pass up. Do we keep our word not to sell before the 4th day, or take the offer? Rule #1 is that the seller makes that decision, not us. If the seller wants to accept a particularly sweet offer on day one or day two, we ask for 24 hours’ lead time so that we can notify all other agents who have set showings that our timeline has changed. “We have this great offer, and the seller wants to accept it.” That gives those agents time to accelerate their timeline and compete (or not) with that particularly sweet offer. Regardless of how an agent handles multiple offers, professional courtesy demands that they communicate with other agents and not just ignore the competing offers. Just call us and say, “My

We are still seeing way too many homes that are selling with zero days on the market, often because the listing agent convinced the seller to accept a contract obtained by the listing agent, thereby allowing the listing agent to keep his or her entire commission instead of sharing it with a buyer’s agent. The Colorado Real Estate Commission frowns upon this practice and has issued guidance that every listing agent should advise their sellers that they may be leaving money on the table (that is, getting less than they might for their home) if they don’t allow the home to be on the MLS for at least a few days so that all interested buyers have a chance to see it and make an offer. Tell your friends that they don’t have to get this newspaper to read my column. I send it free by email. Just ask!

Through our investigation we have not made any prior connection between our good Samaritan and our suspect.” A press release issued by the APD on June 25 stated that Troyke wrote a document expressing his disdain for the police department containing the following statements: • “My goal today is to kill Arvada PD officers” • “We the people were never your enemy, but we are now” • “This is what you get, you are the people who are expendable” • “Hundreds of you pigs should be killed daily” • “Today I will kill as many Arvada officers as I possibly can” • “I just hope I don’t die without killing any of you pigs” Surveillance camera footage released by the APD on June 25 shows Troyke emerging from his vehicle with a 12-gauge semiautomatic shotgun, approaching Officer Beesley and shooting him twice as Beesley turns to respond. Troyke then runs back to his vehicle to retrieve an AR-15. The video cuts out before Hurley responds to the incident and is shot. At the June 22 press conference, Strate said that the investigative team still believes this was an isolated incident and that the Arvada community and Olde Town are secure. “Communities need to understand and know what they ask of their police officers,” said Strate. “The sacrifices that they make, the cost to them for your

safety. While this was a deliberate act of violence, we still believe that this was an isolated incident and the community is safe.” Strate also gave more information about Officer Beesley and his career with the APD. “The death of Gordon Beesley is a tragic loss to this community and this department,” Strate said. “But most importantly, it is an inconceivable loss to his family. Gordon began his career with APD in September 2002. “As an Arvada police 0fficer,” Strate continued, “he worked patrol, as a field training officer, motorcycle officer and a school resource officer. He worked at numerous schools in Arvada since 2012. Most recently, Gordon worked at Oberon Middle School. During the summer months our SROs work patrol and Gordon volunteered to work in the Olde Town area.” Strate added that Beesley was a wellrespected member of the community. “Gordon (Beesley) was a true gentleman and a kind soul,” said Strate. He always had a smile on his face, and everyone felt better after having had a conversation with Gordon.”

On June 25, the Arvada Police Department gave the following timeline of the events that occurred on June 21 in Olde Town Square that led to the deaths of APD Officer Gordon Beesley, Johnny Hurley and suspect Ronald Troyke: • Suspect Ronald Troyke’s brother calls Arvada police at 12:49 p.m. asking for a welfare check because Troyke was going to “do something crazy.” • Officer Beesley and another Arvada police officer attempted to contact Troyke at his residence at 1:08 p.m. to check his welfare as requested. They are unable to make contact with him, and clear from the call for service at 1:18 p.m. • Dispatch receives a suspicious person call at 1:17 p.m. in the Olde Town Square. • Officer Beesley is dispatched to the suspicious person call at 1:30 p.m., arriving at the Olde Town Square at 1:31pm. The following events were given without corresponding timestamps but occurred in chronological order following Officer Beesley’s arrival at Olde Town Square: • Officer Beesley parked on Webster Street and walked

through an alley toward the Olde Town Square. • As Officer Beesley walked westbound, the suspect pulled into the area in a truck and parked behind him. • The suspect got out of his truck with a 12-gauge semiautomatic shotgun, ran after Officer Beesley and yelled at him. • Officer Beesley stopped, turned and immediately was shot twice by the suspect. • Officer Beesley did not reach for his gun and took no defensive action — he simply turned in response to the suspect who then shot and killed him. • The suspect then shot out the windows of patrol cars parked in the area and shot into the air. • The suspect ran back to his truck and retrieved an AR-15 rifle. • The suspect ran back towards the Olde Town Square with the long gun, where he was confronted by Johnny Hurley. • Hurley then shot the suspect with a handgun. • A responding Arvada police officer then encountered Mr. Hurley, who was holding the suspect’s AR-15. The officer shot him.

Two vigils held in Arvada honoring Olde Town shooting victims Peace Lutheran, St. Anne host remembrances as community grieves BY RYAN DUNN RDUNN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Two vigils were held in Arvada following the June 21 shooting in Olde Town Square that claimed the lives of Arvada Police Officer Gordon Beesley and Johnny Hurley. Peace Lutheran Church held a prayer vigil honoring Officer Beesley on June 22 and the Shrine of St. Anne Catholic Church hosted a vigil remembering both Beesley and Hurley on June 24. The Arvada community came together to grieve in droves, with over 700 people attending the vigil at Peace Lutheran and over 400 filling St. Anne’s later in the week. The vigil at Peace Lutheran featured speeches from Arvada Mayor Marc Williams, City Manager Mark Deven and two of Beesley’s co-workers at Oberon Middle School. After the speeches, religious leaders from the community shared thoughts, songs and prayers. The service at St. Anne’s included speeches from Arvada City Councilmember John Marriott, City Manager Mark Deven and APD Deputy Chief Ed Brady. Similarly to the vigil at Peace Lutheran, the speeches were followed by religious services,

After 64 years, Abner’s Garden Center says goodbye Neighboring Edward’s Meats taking over property BY PAUL ALBANI-BURGIO PALBANIBURGIO@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

According to a 2018 Forbes Magazine article, around half of all businesses fail in the first five years. So although the article did not say how many businesses make it over 60 years, it seems safe to say that Abner’s Garden Center in Wheat Ridge, which opened in 1957, is in rare company. “We’ve had a real long run here,

especially for a small business,” said Reed Becerra, who has run the garden center started by his father, Abner, since 2001. But it’s a run that will soon come to an end as Becerra says the time is right for him to retire and he will be closing the garden center on by the end of September. “I’m getting up there and I have no kids or anything to take over from me or anything like that,” he said of his decision. “So, it just seemed to be good timing.” Still, saying goodbye to the shop, which has been a part of his life since he was a young second grader

Faller said the joy of Abner’s was captured for her by one longtime customer, who recently told her that the store “was never just a place you would go for a transaction.” “They told me going to Abner’s was kind of like meeting up with friends,” she said. Becerra, meanwhile, said he will miss both the plants and people, especially those who patronized Abner’s for decades. “When you’re around long enough you start seeing the same people over and over again and then you start seeing their kids,” he said. “And it’s the same thing with the employees, I have some that started when they were teenagers and then they come back to shop and now they’ve got kids.”

Becerra said the shop went through its fair share of changes over the years from its early days as a roadside fruit and vegetable market back when 44th Avenue was one of the main thoroughfares to go up to the mountains, along with Colfax Avenue. “People would come on their way to picnic and stuff and say you need to start handling some groceries and stuff so we can have picnics and stuff up here,” he said. While longtime Abner’s shoppers won’t welcome the center’s closure, they might take some comfort that the space is staying local—and in the extended Abner’s family. That’s because Becerra reached an agreement with the owners of Edward’s Meats, the meat market that started out operating out of Abner’s grocery store and now occupies the full former grocery store space adjacent to the current garden center, to buy the entire property. Becerra said they are discussing using the space that currently houses Abner’s for additional storage, parking and, possibly, retail or dining space, although he was unsure if any definitive plans had been made. Those needing a new place to buy a new plant or one of Abner’s trademark hanging flower baskets also won’t have to look far. “We’ve been telling customers that once we’re gone and stuff to go see my brother at Young’s Garden Center, which is another independent garden center,” he said.

Proposed map launches redistricting process BY THY VO, SANDRA FISH, JESSE PAUL AND DANIEL DUCASSI THE COLORADO SUN

Colorado’s new, eighth congressional district would include the cities of Arvada, Westminster, Broomfield, Thornton, Brighton and Platteville, a preliminary map drawn by nonpartisan redistricting staff and presented to the state’s Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission on June 23 shows. Staff placed the new district in the north Denver metro area for two reasons, said Jeremiah Barry, a legislative attorney advising the

redistricting commissions. “The first reason was we recognize this was the fastest-growing area of the state,” said Barry. “The second was a recognition that although nearly 30% of the population of the state are Hispanics, none of the current seven districts are represented by a Hispanic.” The map is a major first step in the state’s once-a-decade redistricting process. It will evolve as the commission gets input from the public and interest groups over the next few months. The preliminary map is based on 2019 U.S. Census Bureau estimates

because of a months-long delay in the release of final population data collected during the 2020 Census. Once the U.S. Census Bureau releases that data in August, redistricting staff will have to adjust the map. “It’s the starting line, but nowhere near the finish line,” Curtis Hubbard, a Democratic political consultant who is registered to lobby the redistricting commissions, said of the preliminary map. The initial map, the public’s first glimpse at how the 8th District may affect the state’s political landscape, also makes changes to the state’s existing seven congressional districts. The 3rd District, represented by Garfield County Republican Lauren Boebert, would gain Eagle, Summit, Grand, Park, Teller and Fremont counties, as well as some of western Boulder County. The San Luis Valley and Pueblo County would be dropped and added to the 4th District, which includes northeast and southeast Colorado and is currently represented by U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, a Republican from Windsor. The 5th District, currently represented by U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn, a Colorado Springs Republican, would contract to include only parts of El Paso County. Southeastern El Paso County and counties in the western part of the district would be drawn into other districts. The 7th District, centered in Jefferson County and currently represented by U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, an Arvada Democrat, would shift south to include Castle Rock, dropping some of Denver’s northwest suburbs, including the bulk of Arvada. Perlmutter, however, would remain in the 7th District under the preliminary map, though only narrowly — by about 50 yards. The new 7th District looks to be the most competitive of the new map. In 2018, the Republican candidate won the attorney general’s contest in the new proposed district by 3 percentage points, though a Democrat won the statewide vote. The 1st District, represented now by U.S. Rep. Diana Degette, a Denver Democrat, would encompass only Denver, dropping portions of Arapahoe and Jefferson counties.

The 6th District, represented by U.S. Rep. Jason Crow, a Centennial Democrat, would lose some of its northern half while continuing to include Aurora, Centennial and Littleton. Both of those districts went heavily Democratic in the 2018 attorney general contest, and, along with the 2nd District in Boulder and Larimer counties, are considered safe seats for that party. Nonpartisan staff used the results of the 2018 attorney general contest, the closest statewide race in a recent, nonpresidential election year, as well as voter registration figures to measure political competitiveness of the redrawn districts. Based on results of the attorney general race, Districts 1 and 2 would be solidly Democratic while Districts 4 and 5 would be solidly Republican. Republicans would have an advantage of nearly 10 percentage points in the 3rd District and 3 percentage points in the 7th District, while Democrats would hold a 12.7 percentage point advantage in the 6th District and 7.3 percentage point advantage in the 8th District. Colorado Democratic Party Chairwoman Morgan Carroll said she was disappointed by the map, arguing the proposed districts advantage the GOP. “While this preliminary plan seems to put a thumb on the scale for Republicans, it is too soon to know how the commissioners will change them,” she said in a statement. The map creates three districts with Hispanic populations of more than 28%: District 1 with 28.6%, District 4 with 31% and District 8 with 29.9%, according to the preliminary data. Staff also sought to keep rural areas together as much as possible, keep the San Luis Valley in one district and keep Boulder and Fort Collins together “due to the large research institutions in those towns,” Barry said. boundaries together over specific “communities of interest,” a term used to describe communities with shared needs and interests. Barry said staff had difficulty identifying the geography of some communities named by members of the public. “In this plan, of the 64 counties in the state, 55 are wholly contained within one congressional district,” Barry said. Staff also acknowledged that comments from certain interest groups influenced their proposal, including the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, which pushed for a district capturing concentrated Hispanic populations in north metro Denver, and Club 20, which called for keeping the entire Western Slope in the same district. Colorado’s population grew 14.5% from 2010 to 2020, making it one of six states that will get one or more new congressional seats in 2022 due to population gains. Colorado’s seven existing congressional districts are currently represented by four Democrats and three Republicans. The map is nonpartisan legislative staff’s initial effort at redrawing the congressional districts, under a 2018 constitutional amendment — Amendment Y — approved by voters. This year marks the first time independent commissions created by Amendment Y and a companion ballot question, Amendment Z, are overseeing the once-a-decade redistricting process in Colorado.

In the past, state lawmakers drew the congressional lines, though they often deadlocked and courts decided on the final districts. Colorado’s Independent Legislative Redistricting Commission was to release initial state Senate and state House district maps on June 29. Both commissions will hold 32 public hearings around the state between July 9 and late August to get feedback on the preliminary maps.

Official census results coming Once nonpartisan legislative staff gets the official 2020 Census data on Aug. 16, they will use feedback from the public hearings, as well as comments submitted to the commissions online, to draw a new set of maps. Another set of hearings will be held in each of the state’s seven congressional districts on the updated district maps. It’s not clear how different the final population data will be from the estimates used for this preliminary map. This year, the Census Bureau is also using a new statistical method for ensuring privacy that would have the largest impact on redistricting at the hyperlocal level. Differential privacy injects random errors into the data to make it harder to identify individuals in small communities. Several states are against its use because it also makes data on small geographic levels, like a single census block, less accurate. Why vaccination will protect you and the community

In addition, people in vulnerable populations and some racial and ethnic minority groups are disproportionately affected by COVID-19.

Celebrating old brilliance this July 4

n the 1920s, in the wake of World War I, a small group of men gathered in Alabama, of all places, to come up with a new way of fighting a war. HITTING Of course, at the HOME time, they didn’t really think what they were doing was coming up with a new way of fighting a war. All of these men were veterans of the “Great War,” the “War to end all Wars,” and, having observed the wholeMichael Alcorn sale carnage that that war wrought upon Europe, they believed that they could do war better. As an aside, between 1914 and 1918, the French lost nearly 20% of their male population of fighting age in the war. Think about that. First, we should have hoped that somebody could do war better. And second, that stat makes me more sympathetic to the French—now I understand that surrender mentality better. At any rate, these crazy men thought that the secret to the next generation of warfare was going to be precision bombing. They had this idea—wholly untested and, at the time, untestable— that it was possible to break a country’s will to war, not by leveling their cities and their civilian populations, but by dropping bombs at precisely the right place to shut off the power, the water, the telephones, and the means of ingress and egress. In one of their

more dramatic thought experiments, they imagined a Canadian Air Force ... No, that’s not the imagination part. They imagined a Canadian Air Force leapfrogging the massed Army of the United States at the New York border and being able to bring New York City to its knees with—wait for it—17 bombs. It was also part of their mindset that such a means of fighting a war was vastly more humane than putting millions of young men and women in a field, facing each other, and grinding them down with machine gunfire. This crazy group of young men is the subject of Malcolm Gladwell’s new book, “The Bomber Mafia.” I am only partway through it at this point, and, as with every one of his books, I am astonished at both the depth of his understandings and his brilliance at telling the story. One of Gladwell’s lines, early in the book, is especially resonant with me this week. He says, “Revolutions are invariably group activities.” By that, he means that something has to spark the ideas behind a revolution; that those ideas have to be tested and weighed in the minds of similarlyminded people; that every idea is sharpened and improved by being bounced around among other good minds. The Bomber Mafia—that group of men in Alabama—started a revolution in warfare, entirely in their minds. See, in 1920, the United States did not have *a* bomber, much less a bomber

fleet with which to test the theories. In 1940, Hitler did exactly the opposite of what these men proposed when he bombed London relentlessly for months; the Allies did the exact same thing at Dresden and Tokyo. And now, much later in time, we see wars fought on CNN with such precision that the idea of civilian casualties is practically a cause for a cease-fire. Revolutions start over conversation. I wonder whose dinner table (or, more likely, bar) Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, John Hancock and the rest were sitting around when the crazy idea of a self-governing society that rested on the approval of its citizenry had started floating around. Talk about changing the world. The “rocket’s red glare” wasn’t the beginning of this grand experiment— it was the end result of a long conversation of like-minded brilliant people. ith COVID-19 restrictions lifting throughout most of the state, communities throughout Colorado are planning triumphant returns to Independence Day festivities. Here are some events scheduled for the Fourth of July weekend throughout the Denver metro area: Adams County’s Stars and Stripes returns from its pandemic hiatus for Saturday, July 3 at Riverdale Regional Park, 9755 Henderson Road, Brighton. There will be a 5K race, a cornhole tournament, live entertainment and musical fireworks. See more at http://adamscountyfair. com/starsandstripes. Arvada The Arvada Festivals Commission will put on a fireworks show on July 4 at Stenger Soccer Complex located at 11200 West 58th Ave., Arvada from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event dates back to 1979. CMF returns for a season of celebrations eturning to some kind of normal for performers and audiences alike is like coming home for COMING many members of ATTRACTIONS both groups. Peter Oundjian, music director of the Colorado Music Festival, is just one of those people. After an entirely virtual version of the event last year, it is returning to Boulder’s Chautauqua Clarke Reader Auditorium. “People are almost giddy with excitement to go to concerts,” Oundjian said. “The audience gives us a tremendous amount of energy

and focus, an energy we feed off, and don’t take for granted. The spontaneity of those moments is what we’re all looking forward to.” The annual Colorado Music Festival features some of the world’s best musicians playing orchestral and chamber music and offers 22 diverse concerts at the Chautauqua, 900 Baseline Road in Boulder, from Thursday, July 1 to Saturday, Aug. 7. There will be live-streaming options available for those who don’t feel comfortable attending in person yet. In addition to the about 40 musicians who will be performing throughout the entirety of the festival, there will be 17 guest artists, three internationally acclaimed string quartets and three guest

conductors will perform throughout the season, according to provided information. “I’ve been performing at the Colorado Music Festival since 2000, and a last has changed in the 20 years. But I’ve made so many friends over the years and love playing here, because the group is great,” said Calin Lupanu, the concertmaster for the festival. BOUND FOR THE OLYMPICS Evergreen rower Kendall Chase ready to live her dream BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

It’s still pretty surreal for Evergreen’s Kendall Chase when she says the words, “I’m going to the Olympics.” The athlete, a 2012 Mullen High School graduate, is part of the U.S. women’s rowing team that will compete in Tokyo next month. She will be rowing on a four-woman team. How does a woman who grew up in a land-locked state end up on a rowing team? When she was 14, she took a learn-to-row class and fell in love, starting at a rowing club that practiced at Cherry Creek Reservoir. She continued her rowing career at the University of California, Berkeley, and has spent the last five years at the Princeton Training Center, training nearly every day to prepare for this moment. Her days start at 5:30 a.m. with practice, a nap, more practice and possibly another practice — six days a week with on-your-own practice on Sundays. “It’s not an exciting life that I live,” she said. “I do not have a lot of time or energy to do the normal 26-year-old things. Nothing we do here is normal. We’re trying to achieve our dreams and chase gold medals at the Olympics. That can’t be normal.” The team leaves for training in Hawaii on July 7 before going to Tokyo on July 14. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, athletes only will go between the Olympic Village and the race course, and they will leave Japan 48 hours after their competition ends. “Our coaches have told us that our Olympic experience will be a bit different than in the past, and I’m totally fine of that,” Chase said. “This is our reality. I’m glad to get to go and compete.” Trials and tribulations The Olympic team tryouts were the hardest three weeks of her life, both physically and emotionally. It was so physically challenging that

she would take ice baths between the morning and afternoon sessions. Her hard work paid off when she was given the last seat in the fourwoman boat. “It’s such a weird dynamic,” Chase said. “You’re so happy for yourself, but my heart breaks for my teammates who ended up on the wrong side of things. These are all your friends. I’ve been on the same team with these people for five years. We push each other beyond our limits every single day at practice.” Now she’s preparing to compete against the best in the world, happy that the games have not been can-

celed by the International Olympic Committee. While the U.S. women have been a rowing powerhouse for many years, it’s been difficult to size up the competition because COVID-19 shut down many meets. “We usually have a sense of how good teams are based off of races and World Cups,” she said. “Who knows what will happen? No one has seen these lineups before.” She noted that the boat she is competing in has a lot of speed and a lot of potential, and it could do well. A dream come true Chase called her 12 years of com-

petitive rowing a long and windy road with the ups, the downs and the injuries, which have made her develop a love/hate relationship for the sport. “I ask myself so many times: ‘Why couldn’t I have been better at golf?’ Rowing is an endurance sport. We train in grueling long sessions, but the race lasts about six minutes” to row the 2,000-meter racecourse. Zachary Janczak didn’t come from a golf family. They weren’t country clubbers or even weekend duffers. But a couple of years ago, a chat with a friend sparked an interest in becoming a caddie. Now, that summer job carrying clubs at Lakewood Country Club, is paying off in a gigantic way. Janczak, 18, a recent graduate

from Lakewood High School, has been awarded the Chick Evans Scholarship by the Western Golf Association (WGA). He is one of 14 Colorado high school students to receive the scholarship this year. For Janczak, that means full tuition, room and board to study Finance at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Janczak says he’s loved his time on the course and will continue to caddie throughout the summer. “Most of the players are already pretty good golfers. So, for the most part, our responsibility as a caddie is to make their experience as enjoyable as possible,” he said. “A lot of the members are really cool — great people to surround

yourself with — very successful and kind and smart, so it’s really cool to work alongside those types of people and also just learn about golf.” He said when he first found out the scholarship existed, he realized what an unbelievable opportunity it could be for his family. “I saw how within two years, I could do it if I worked hard enough, so from there I really dedicated myself to it,” he said. “When we (his family) found out I got it, we were all ecstatic. Quest for first boys lacrosse state title comes up just short BY DENNIS PLEUSS JEFFCO PUBLIC SCHOOLS

ENGLEWOOD — Evergreen’s boys lacrosse team was six minutes away from hoisting the Class 4A state trophy June 22 at Englewood High School. The Cougars had scored four unanswered goals to grab a 4-2 lead on top-seeded Cheyenne Mountain (12-1 record) in the state championship game. However, the Indians mounted a comeback for the ages with three goals in the final 5:15 minutes of the fourth quarter to steal a 5-4 victory from the Cougars. “We knew we had to play 48 minutes of solid lacrosse. Some of those small mistakes toward the end really did cost us. That was unfortunate,” Evergreen coach Jay Egger said after the Cougars’ first appearance in a boys lacrosse state championship game. “We played a really good Cheyenne Mountain team. Congratulations to them; they deserved it.” Cheyenne Mountain sophomore Kevin Papa scored the eventual-game winning goal off a great feed from senior Zak Paige in the final minute of regulation-time. Paige fired a hard pass to Papa, who was camped out just to the right of Evergreen senior goalie Andrew Morris. “They worked it around to the top right corner and kind of lulled our defense a little asleep,” Morris said of the Indians’ eventual game-winning goal. “When we expected a shot from the top left, they fired a pass right across my face. It was a beautiful play

by them. They deserved that goal.” Evergreen (11-2) has a couple of scoring chances late. A play set-up for senior Ben Crosbie just missed, and a final shot by senior Connor Dries was saved by Cheyenne Mountain sophomore goalie Matthew Kelleher in the final seconds. It’s the second state title for Cheyenne Mountain, who has advanced to the last three 4A state championship games in 2018, 2019 and 2021. There was no state championship game in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We knew if we could get one more goal in there, that would give us all the momentum,” Egger said about the Cougars going up 4-2 with the goal from Dries early in the fourth quarter. “It was right there.” Cheyenne Mountain took a 2-0 lead through the first quarter with goals from sophomore Hank Walsh and Papa. However, the Indians were tagged with a 2-minute illegal stick penalty between the first and second quarters. Evergreen took advantage with senior Jared Stiller rifling in the Cougars’ first goal 19 seconds into the second quarter. “That man-up play gave us some momentum that we needed to come back,” Stiller said of his power-play goal. It was a defensive struggle for the remainder of the first half. Morris was solid in net with defenders Stiller, senior John Wagner and sophomore Mike Crane holding Cheyenne Mountain scoreless for more than 30

minutes of play. “We kind of knew if we were going to stay in the game we had to keep our defense together and hold them down,” Stiller said. “Damn, we did pretty good but not good enough.” Evergreen scored back-to-back goals in a span of 7 seconds in the third quarter to take a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Nash Carroll got off a shot before taking a huge hit, but the shot got past Kelleher. Senior Jack Fairbanks won the ensuing face-off and drove to the net and scored with 7:53 left in the third quarter to give the Cougars their first lead. A power-play goal by Cheyenne Mountain sophomore Wyatt Furda cut Evergreen’s lead to 4-3 with 5:15 to play. Papa had a hard shot hit off the post and in with 3:42 left to tie the game at 4-4 before Papa’s third goal of the night sealed the victory for the Indians. “Things could have fallen either

way,” Egger said. “Tonight I’m proud of our coaches. I’m proud of our players. We just fell a little short. Hopefully we gave the community and our families a good show. Evergreen is going to be around here for a while.” Evergreen went 1-13 during the 2016 season. Egger took over the program in 2017 and the Cougars went 10-5. Evergreen made its first playoff appearance in 2018. Two years ago the Cougars won their first playoff game. This year Evergreen won its first-ever conference title while making its deepest postseason run in the program’s history. “If there is anything we can still be proud coming out of this game,” Stiller said. “We were setting (school) records even before we got to the playoffs. We did stuff this school has never seen before. I definitely believe we’ll see another Evergreen boys lacrosse team back here soon.” Evergreen graduates 17 seniors that were the heart of the Cougars during this historic season. “I’m so proud of these boys and this program,” Egger said. “They changed this program forever. These 26 players have changed it. They worked so hard and I wanted (state title) for them. I’ve been coaching a long time, and I’ve never had a group like this. sport. I have played every other sport there is, and there is no sport more team-y than rowing.” She called her teammates gritty with a will to fight to win. So far she has no plans for after the Olympics, though Chase hopes to take some time off to decide if she wants to return to the sport. “If I decide that I am OK being done, I will be done,” she said. “If I feel like I have some unfinished business or want to keep going, I will keep going. Right now, I’m trying to focus on the here and now.”

He recently started an online business buying and selling sports trading cards and offering a subscription service to teach others the ropes in the trading card game.
