Firefly Autism, a Lakewood-based organization that’s been helping those diagnosed with autism for more than 20 years, is seeing new programs and possibilities emerge as COVID finally starts to retreat. Jesse Ogas, Executive Director/ CEO of the nonprofit says Firefly had just moved into its newly purchased and renovated facility at 20th Avenue and Hoyt Street when COVID appeared on the horizon. They quickly transitioned to a virtual model, and since reopening to in-person services, have been successful at keeping the virus at bay. “Firefly continues to innovate and change the landscape of autism treatment across our communities in Colorado,” Ogas said. “But we’re also now recognized as leaders, nationally and internationally, for the work that we’re doing.” He says the new building allowed them to open a diagnostics clinic and begin offering sibling support programs. Colorado Mills making a post-pandemic comeback Retailers say crowds have been returning to Lakewood shopping center even as challenges remain

After a year in which even the act of shopping was beset with precautions and anxiety, those who visited Colorado Mills mall on the last Friday in May and first in June found a scene that was surprisingly, well, normal. The mall was crowded with shoppers — particularly going into the Memorial Day weekend — and most walked without masks, which are no longer required by mall management for the vaccinated, and oftentimes in large groups of clearly unrelated people (read: the teens are back). The vast majority of shops big and small had also reopened for business with some new businesses even having sprung in the places of old favorites and only a handful of vacancies breaking up the activity. Even the neighboring Regal UA Colorado Mills movie theater, which was closed entirely for well over a year, has turned its screens back on and is again screening new releases. Sure, if you looked closely their were some things you wouldn’t have seen two years - the children’s play area was closed off and covered in plastic and some stores required shoppers to wait outside before entering to allow for social distance. But by and large, those changes were subtle and provided only a few clues that America is still coming out of a pandemic that completely altered the mall and most other facets of everyday life. At Colorado Hat Co., owner Pat Sanner said he has noticed significantly more activity at the mall. “We are definitely noticing the weekends are quite busy,” he said. “I would say weekends are probably on par to what they were before the pandemic but weekends are much better off.” That seems to be paying off for Sanner’s business, which he said has actually been doing better re-

cently than it was before the pandemic. He said he’s not quite sure if that’s a result of the busier mall, the ongoing Nuggets and Avalanche playoff runs or other factors but says he welcomes the business after what he describes as a “pretty tough year” that led his store to close for 89 days at the start of the pandemic. When it comes to the long-term future of the mall, Sanner said he’s “not totally bullish” given the struggles malls were experiencing even before the pandemic thanks to such challenges as the ever-increasing popularity of online retail. However, he feels his shop is in decent shape for the time being and won’t be going out of business anytime soon. “Some of the really big spots in the mall are still empty but the SEE MILLS, P3

small spots seem to be doing OK,” said Sanner. “Just next door a new Italian spot opened up.” That spot is Bravo’s Italian Restaurant, a counter specializing in fresh and authentic Italian food that opened at the end of May. Bravo’s owner Tony Lombardi, who owns two successful Bravo’s standalone restaurants in the north Denver metro area, said he decided to give opening a Bravo’s in Colorado Mills a shot after receiving a call from mall management after taking over one of the spaces that became vacant during the pandemic. “It’s been pretty slow,” said Lombardi. “But we are trying.” Among the bigger spaces in the mall that have welcomed a new tenant was the former Sak’s Fifth Avenue space, which is now home to the Rodz & Bodz, a car museum showcasing cars that were
used in the filming of movies. Rodz & Bodz owner Zack Loffert said his company provides cars for movies and commercials as well as weddings. Loffert said he had been planning to eventually open a museum so the public could see the cars but decided to accelerate the process once COVID hit thinking that opening as the pandemic was ending would make sense because “everybody is going to be wanting to get out and about.” Loffert said he chose to open inside a mall, rather than as a standalone museum, in large because he wanted to create something that would normally never be seen in a mall and also put his business in a place where “people who are never going to drive to a museum” could access it. Democratic Sponsors May Regret HOA Legislation Which Bans Limits on Political Flags & Signage Before the current session of the Colorado General Assembly ends this Saturday, it will send to the Governor a bill which bars HOAs from regulating the display of partisan signs. The bill’s prime sponsors are Rep. Lisa Cutter of Jefferson County and Sen. Robert Rodriguez of Denver, both Democrats. The title of the bill is “Homeowners’ Association Regulation of Flags and Signs” with the subtitle “Concerning additional protections for homeowners’ freedom of expression in common interest communities.” Sounds like a good idea, right? Who is (or dares to be) against freedom of expression? It has attracted 11 other representatives and 5 other senators as sponsors. However, let’s consider the unintended (or perhaps intended) consequences of this law. Basically the bill only allows content-neutral regulation of signs and flags, prohibiting only commercial messages.
Considering the political divide in our country and the extremism on each side of it, do we really want to allow unfettered display in our communities of right-wing and left-wing signs and flags? I can live with the fact that a neighbor might be a QAnon follower, but I don’t want his lawn festooned with conspiracy messages or even Trump 2024 flags and signs without any limitation on their number or duration of display. Currently it is typical for an HOA to bar flags or signs of a political nature unless they are for a particular candidate or ballot measure and to limit their display to 45 days prior to an election and a short period afterwards. The effect of HB21-1310 would be to bar HOAs from enforcing any such limitation on the display of any political message at all, even if the membership voted for such a limitation. If this bill becomes law, look for signs cropping up in your neighborhood for “Stop the Steal” or “Black Lives Matter”

This can only serve to rile up divisions among neighbors who were heretofore happily ignorant of each other’s political beliefs. I can picture neighbors removing or destroying signs and flags they disagree with. These actions will be caught on cameras leading to criminal complaints and sometimes violence. Do
we really want to go in this direction? Homeowners and renters are entitled to the quiet enjoyment of their premises. Unleashing this “freedom of expression” through flags and signs will only work against that principle. I hope Governor Polis vetoes this bill when it gets to his desk. Let’s Make Our Summer Months a Little Bit Quieter Walking our dog, Chloe, is a favorite daily routine for me. Recently, I passed a neighbor mowing his lawn with a battery electric lawn mower, and I thanked him for doing so. “I love it,” he replied, and it got me thinking how nice it would be if more neighbors ditched their gasoline lawn mowers, edgers and trimmers now that electric versions of each are widely available and affordable. The next time your gas-powered device needs a tune-up, apply that expense to the purchase of an electric version and you’ll enjoy not only a quieter neighborhood but no future tune-ups, no struggles to start the device, and lower cost overall. I have read that a lawn mower emits more pollution than an automobile. A
quick Google search on the topic produced the following tidbit: “The EPA estimates that hour-forhour, gasoline powered lawn mowers produce 11 times as much pollution as a new car. According to the EPA, each gas-powered lawn mower produces as much air pollution as 43 new automobiles driven 12,000 miles per year – lawn care produces 13 billion pounds of toxic pollutants per year.” My stepson has a small lawn and is happy to use an old-style rotary push mower. I have a 10-year-old corded electric mower that has never needed repair and a battery powered weed eater which only needs me to replace the string now and then — my biggest annoyance!

When most kids are in third grade, they learning their first multiplication tables and reading their first first chapter books. But last year, Shelton Elementary School student Adele Fulton achieved a much different sort of first: she was issued her first patent. That patent, received in October, was for a unique backpack called the Lovie Window that includes a pocket where a stuff animal can be placed along with a plastic “window” that allows the stuff animal inside to be seen. Fulton said she came up with the idea for the Lovie Window about four years ago after facing a simple but nonetheless very distressing problem: she was having trouble falling asleep during her pre-school’s nap time because she was worried about her stuffed toy — which she calls a stuffy or a lovie — in her backpack. “When I went home my dad was like ‘what are you going to do about that?’” Adele said. “And then I was like ‘I need a backpack with a window.’” So Adele and her dad, David Ful-

What followed was a yearslong process to get the backpacks produced that involved everything from COVID-19-related delays to a lengthy process to make sure the backpacks were approved as safe for use by kids. “I totally did not know that was a thing and how expensive that was,” said David of the safety testing. But that lengthy manufacturing process recently came to an end, when Adele received some big news from her dad. “I came home from school and he was like ‘you have 750 backpacks in the garage,’” she said. In the weeks since, Adele and her dad have been busy distributing backpacks to those who supported the initial Kickstarter. They do so by hand if the contributor lives in Golden and use the mail if they live out of state. Adele has also been busy hand signing cards that are sent to everyone who contributed or has since ordered a backpack. With the first order of backpacks now received, Adele said she is now hoping to continue selling backpacks to finish paying off the costs of manufacturing the initial batch. At that point, she will then be able to start collecting the profits. “I think it’s more than just a fun

James Hessel came home from school on Sept. 11, 2001, and told his mom he was joining the Marines. “He felt it was his patriotic duty after that terrible day,” said Hessel’s mom, Kathie Newman. “I told him to look into some of the other military branches. The Marines are pretty hardcore.” But Hessel was set on the Marines, and was sent to Iraq. “Every day, my pride and my fear lived side by side,” Newman said. Eventually, Hessel came home, but he wasn’t the same. He struggled with the impacts of a head injury sustained in a bomb attack on his convoy. He earned a Purple Heart for surviving the attack, but it left him with nebulous mental issues. “He struggled for a time, but he found a good job, and we thought he was doing great,” Newman said. “But those who served over there — they carry wounds in their hearts. He saw things that ate him up inside. Sometimes he was here, and sometimes he said he felt like he was back there. He wasn’t sure

The Adult Social Skills program is a place for adults on the spectrum to come together, seek treatment and share the trials and tribulations of living with autism. Although Firefly has been working with adults for years in a home-based model, the new center has opened new ways to serve this often-overlooked group. “We’ve got several groups of likeminded individuals that are problem solving. It’s a space for them, alongside of a Board-Certified Behavioral Analyst,” Ogas said. “They begin to become a support group for one another and talk about solutions. They become a resource for other individuals in the group.” The need for such a program became clear to Ogas while giving a tour of their old facility to a donor. “At the end of the tour, he looked like he was irritated, and I asked if he was okay, and he said, “where was Firefly when I was growing up?”” He said the man told him he’d been diagnosed with autism in his mid-sixties and was dismayed that he’d lived his whole life without understanding what was at the root of so many of his issues. He told Ogas if he’d been diagnosed earlier in life, so many things would have made more sense. That said, an autism diagnosis can be difficult to receive. Ogas says there’s a lot of stigmas that comes

with it. So, Firefly is really focused on helping people understand what autism is and what it isn’t. “Contrary to the old belief that kids would grow out of it, we know

that autism is a life-long journey,” he says. “Not just for the individual — for the entire universe that circles that individual.” He says whether they’re working with a child of eighteen months or a seventy-year-old adult, they’re creating support systems to help ensure success — not just for the individual, but of the entire family unit. “When you meet a person on the spectrum, they are totally unique. There’s not another person on the planet just like them,” Ogas said. Another goal on Firefly’s list is doing away with stereotypes that only make life harder for those who’ve been diagnosed with autism and may actually prevent others from seeking a diagnosis. “The bottom line is autism is a different way of being — a differ-
ent way of looking at the world,” he says. “There’s so much power when you’re able to look through a different lens and able to communicate in a different way.” Tobin Truslow, Firefly’s Director of Development, stressed the importance of the holistic treatment offered at the facility. “Because of our all-encompassing approach, you can get a diagnosis for autism, but autism is only one factor of the diagnosis,” he said. “Here, we’ve got speech therapy, occupational therapy, mental health, physical therapy. We’ve proven through data and science that we’re the best clinic you can go to.” Recently, Firefly has been holding vaccination clinics to serve in another way. “We were what you call an equity clinic, taking care of folks on the (autism) spectrum, folks with developmental disabilities, taking care of our elderly who had not been able to get a vaccination. We were taking care of our Asian and Latino and African American communities. So, we are taking care of the community as a whole,” Ogas said. “We’re firm believers that you’ve got to give back to the community in which you serve. Westbound I-70 $1.7 million grant to fight hunger in Jeffco ramp to Ward Road closed June 10-14 BY GRACIELA A. FISCHER SPECIAL TO COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA

The Colorado Department of Transportation will close the westbound I-70 on- and off-ramps at Ward Road (Exit 266) from 9 p.m., Thursday, June 10, to 5:30 a.m., Monday, June 14. The closures are necessary to make safety and traffic operations improvements at the I-70 and Ward Road interchange. The improvements will includes wider ramps and new pavement, ramp meters and signs. The project will add permanent water quality features, and improve access to the RTD Park n Ride. Detour signage will be in place to direct drivers to alternate routes. Motorists can exit westbound I-70 at Exit 267 (Kipling St.) or Exit 265 (CO 58 to Golden) to bypass the closures. To access westbound I-70, drivers will be directed to the frontage road north of the ramps to Kipling. Alternatively, motorists can take 44th Avenue, then east to the I-70 interchange. Motorists can expect short delays and an estimated 10 minutes added to drive times through the area. th The project began in March and is expected to last until late October. To help those who need a consistent food supply, Jefferson County is planning on giving a $1.7 million grant to help build a resilient food system. Community First Foundation (CFF) and Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) are working to help those in Jefferson County with food insecurity. They plan on giving people access to food that is locally produced, nutritious, and meets cultural preferences. Before the Covid- 19 pandemic, 10% of Jefferson County residents were experiencing food insecurity. Since the pandemic, that number has quadrupled. Now since Covid, 2 out of 5 Colorado residents struggle with food insecurity according to Marybeth Goodwin, the Program Officer at CFF. “Food is one of our most basic human needs. If we’re hungry it becomes really difficult to do anything else well, whether that is going to school, being a good parent, or showing up for work,” Goodwin said. “When access to food is limited or unreliable, it creates a ripple effect that can span multiple communities, Rescue including the places we live

and work.” The funding for this organization has come from projects, service areas, and the strength of alignment with the request for proposals. In addition, JCPH and CFF plan on making 15 to 20 awards in amounts of up to $500,000. To receive support from Jefferson County, the applicants must be headquartered or have a physical location in Jefferson County. If a resident is not headquartered or does not have a physical location in Jefferson County, they must have a recent and or clear planned commitment to providing services in Jefferson County. This is to ensure that the food goes to Jefferson County residents. CFF has to look at several factors when deciding the best way to fight food insecurity. One thing they have to keep in mind is asking themselves what the long-term and sustainable solutions look like. This has Presented led the CFFbyto analyze the entire food system. The biggest concern is trying to understand the long term effects, and Covid-19 has made that a struggle. time in around the last month that Jeffco Schools educators and staff have mobilized to draw attention to their concerns on a Thursday evening before a school board meeting, July 3. Elizabeth Powis Fulks, an art teacher at Adams Elementary School in Westminster, brought her daughter to the rally. She said she’d come to encourage the district to hire more black teachers. Jeffco currently has only six black teachers in the district. In a recent interview with the newspaper, new Jeffco Schools Superintendent, Tracy Dorland, said equity was one of her priorities.

What does a family do when a global pandemic hits, leaving countless hours to fill and three children to keep entertained? If the family in question is the Goekes of Lakewood, they invent their own game, which is actually three games, and turn a homemade time-filler into an exciting new home business. “We always struggled to find family games that gave the kids a fair shot at winning, but which also kept all ages engaged. So, we made one of our own,” said Jeff Goeke, father of Claire, 12, Eve, 10, and Jacob, 7. Canoosh, the game the Goekes created, uses the principle of probability in rolling number combinations with a pair of dice to create what they call a portable, fun, family-friendly competition for all players. “We knew that if we were going to create a family game, we knew it had to work where the adults weren’t bored and the kids had an equal chance of winning,” Goeke said. “We feel like through the testing and the writing of the gameplay, we really cracked the code on the family game that everybody

wants to play.” Goeke, a graphic designer by trade, said it didn’t take him long to start thinking about the look and feel of the game, including packaging and branding. “My background, my nature, is to create things, make them visual,” he said. “As soon as we felt we had
some viable game-play with this, we started taking it to the next level — logo development, identity.” He said his work with various start-ups over the years showed him how quickly a product can go from idea to investor. On the financial side, the Goeke family has been able to fund the game’s production
on its own. Prototyping, testing and refining soon followed. Now, the game, which started on a lark, is being sold online and in a retail store in Jeffco. Composed of a game board, colored marker chips and two dice, Canoosh gives players a chance to “roll the dice, place their chips on the corresponding numbers on the board, remove (Canoosh) opponents’ chips, and conquer the board to win,” he said. Eve said the name Canoosh is a play on a nickname (Noosh) she’d given her little brother, Jacob, a few years ago. Originally called Probability, Goeke said that name didn’t come close to relaying the amount of fun the game had to offer. Claire said another fun part of creating the game has been the time spent assembling the packaging with her family. “We order our supplies, then as a family, we all pitch in to sort out the chips, cutting out the instructions and putting the game boards into the tubes,” she said. “Then, once they’re packaged, it’s pretty easy to take them to the store in a neat little box.” The Goekes say that’s fine for right now but admit they’d love to see large quantities of the game being shipped to Target and Walmart in the future. Rehearsing success leads to success
W
hen we anticipate the future, do we see ourselves winning or succeeding? Or do we look into our future and see only WINNING losses or failure ahead? WORDS Some could see this as a simple difference between optimism and pessimism. However, it is more than that too. When we dream, we don’t typically dream of Michael Norton the fish we almost caught, the deal we almost won, or the meal we almost prepared. No, typically in our dreams we catch the fish, and it is bigger than we expected; we close the deal and it’s worth more in commission than any previous deal we had sold; and the dinner that we cooked was nothing short of culinary perfection, worthy of qualifying for a spot on a famous cooking show. Over the course of life, I have yet to find the person who shared a dream where they saw them-
selves shanking a drive on the golf course, had a big outdoor event like a wedding getting rained out or canceled, or the company they were about to start becoming an immediate and utter failure. When those do occur, those are nightmares, not dreams. All visions of success are not limited to dreams. As a matter of fact, many people who have achieved their goals in life didn’t passively wait for success to happen to them, they went ahead and made success happen. And the way they contributed to their success was planning, preparing, and rehearsing ahead of time. A friend of mine was always swinging a golf club. Well, not really a golf club, but an imaginary golf club. We would be in the conference room having a conversation and he would stand and make the motions of swinging the club. He would do this in the airport, standing around outside of a restaurant as we waited to get in, or anywhere he had enough space to swing his arms. Whenever he had a few minutes, he would go through the motions as if he were playing a
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Xcel should speed transition The climate emergency demands that we quickly replace fossil fuels with low-carbon renewables. Unfortunately, Xcel plans to operate the Comanche 3 coal-fired power plant in Pueblo until 2040, making it the only utility in Colorado planning to burn coal after 2030. Comanche 3 is Colorado’s single biggest source of carbon dioxide emissions and is a major contributor to smog, as well as causing or contributing to asthma attacks and other respiratory and cardiac illnesses. Coal plants are the most expensive and polluting form of energy in Colorado. This Spring, the Colorado Public Utilities Commission released a report on Comanche 3, revealing that it has been far more expensive and far less reliable than Xcel promised when it built the plant. The plant has been shut down due to malfunctioning equipment for 700 days since it started operating in 2010. Malfunctions in 2020 alone resulted in an additional $25 million in capital costs and nearly $16 million in replacement power costs. Xcel customers are footing the bill for operation of an unreliable, highly polluting power plant that should be shut down by 2030 and replaced with clean, abundant wind energy (the cheapest form of energy in Colorado). round. And if he knew the course that he was going to be playing, he would envision the actual hole and mentally play it out in his head. He would tee off, hit his approach shot, and make the putt. He was rehearsing for success. Now I play a little golf too, or rather I attempt to play golf. And I have also made some imaginary golf swings. However, I am doing it just to stretch, not with the full intention of seeing the club strike the ball, the trajectory, and the soft landing. No, I am not rehearsing for success the way that my friend does, and it shows each time we play. Have you ever seen a pianist, guitarist, drummer, or other musician practicing without their instrument? Their eyes are usually closed as they play, but in their head, they see their hands moving across the keys or strings and hear the awesome and beautiful sounds that they are creating. They too are rehearsing for success. Will we always succeed or win by merely envisioning ourselves doing so? No, we will not. Will we
increase our likelihood of succeeding and winning by seeing ourselves doing so? Yes, we will. You see, something happens to us as we allow ourselves to internalize the motions, the real and rehearsed drills and practice swings of life, they become part of what we call the winner’s attitude. If this pandemic has taught me anything, I have learned to keep dreaming, to keep seeing the next opportunity for success ahead of me, and to encourage others to do the same. The world will continue to change, that is fact. And the best thing we can do is to make sure we change our mindset to one of seeing ourselves succeeding and winning with each change that comes our way. A lesson for each of us as we honor our heroes
O
ne of my favorite aspects of the recent Memorial Day holiday coupled with the anniversary of D-Day is the unironic respect, for one day, that television networks give to HITTING our heroes and veterans. For one day, it seems, the HOME powers that be in Hollywood and New York are willing and, maybe, even happy, to run entire days’ worth of programming devoted to telling the stories of the men who volunteered to put on a uniform with an American flag on it, and run into the most Michael Alcorn dangerous places in the world to beat back tyrants and megalomaniacs. Thus, we are treated to day-long marathons of shows like “Band of Brothers,” which tells the story of the 101st Airborne, 506th Battalion, Easy Company, from its formation in Georgia all the way through to the liberation of one of the subcamps of Dachau, and the eventual victory in Europe in World War II. If you’ve never seen it, you should. It is an unsparing look at the horrors and brutality of war, and of the extraordinary character of the men who fight it on our behalf. At the center of the story is Maj. Dick Winters, who was awarded the
Army’s Distinguished Service Cross for his efforts. Then there’s “Hacksaw Ridge,” the story of Desmond Doss, a committed pacifist who, nonetheless, served as a medic in the Pacific Theater of World War II, and, during the Invasion of Okinawa, repeatedly scaled a cliff in the dead of night to carry wounded soldiers off the battlefield. And when I say, “repeatedly,” I’m vastly understating it: Pfc. Doss climbed up the cliff *75* times to pick up a wounded comrade, and 75 times scaled down the cliff with his burden. For his heroism, Desmond Doss was awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor … all without firing a single shot. There is also “Men of Honor,” the story of Carl Brashear, the first African-American Master Diver in the U.S. Navy. This movie tells of how Brashear overcomes racism to rise through the ranks, saves a crew and recovers a missing hydrogen bomb (!) in the 1966 Palomares incident, survives having his leg amputated and, yet, fights his way back into honorable service. Brashear was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, the highest non-combat award in the U.S. Navy. Coincidentally, I just finished reading the book “Beyond Valor,” the story of Sergeant Henry Erwin, who served aboard a

The Clear Creek County commissioners have recommended that Squaw Mountain be renamed Mestaa’ehehe Mountain. Dozens of Clear Creek residents, people of indigenous descent, Colorado residents and others from out of state submitted public comment at the June 1 commissioners meeting, saying the current name is extremely offensive, and it should be renamed in a way that honors the tribes that once lived in the area. Both written and verbal public comment almost unanimously supported renaming the peak. Only three local residents submitted comments in opposition, saying they felt renaming the mountain would be an overreach. The commissioners also felt the peak should be renamed and directed staff to convey their recommendation to the U.S. Bureau of Geographic Names and a state advisory board. The latter will likely evaluate the Mestaa’ehehe Mountain petition in mid- or late summer and make a recommendation to the USBGN, which has final say in renaming the peak. Last October, representatives from the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the U.S. Forest Service filed a joint federal petition to rename the peak Mestaa’ehehe Mountain. The proposed name would honor Owl Woman, a notable Cheyenne figure who helped maintain peace-

On one particular mission, his plane was flying lead in the bombing run, which meant one of its responsibilities was to drop phosphorous bombs over the target to mark it for the others. One night, that bomb got stuck in the chute and began to burn inside the plane. Erwin picked up the phosphorous bomb — which burns at over 1,000 degrees — and carried it through the plane to throw it out an open hatch, saving the lives of his entire crew. He too, was awarded the Medal of Honor. Stories of our heroes are more important than simply glorifying their deeds. They inform us of who we are, what we fight for (Band of Brothers, episode 9, “Why We Fight”) and who, at our very best, we are capable of being. I do not

Boulder’s Paul Soderman described how he and members of the Lakota Tribe worked to change the name of South Dakota’s Harney Peak, which was named for his ancestor, to Black Elk Peak. While the process wasn’t easy, he said it was worthwhile. “The energy has changed,” he said of Black Elk Peak. “ … These name changes are not just hip and cool. They actually help heal a lot of historical trauma and unresolved grief.” Theresa Small, a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, also emphasized the need to rename the mountain, saying, “We breathe life into our words.” Residents’ reactions Lia Presnell and Anne-Marie ther King Jr. said our goal should be judging each other on the content of our character, not the color of our skin. How does Critical Race Theory further these goals? Dan Bidstrup, Arvada deny that we often fail at living up to these men (to date, there is only one woman MoH recipient, a Civil War doctor), and that, in many ways, there is no doubt these men were imperfect. But, I think — in fact, I know — that’s the point. We’re waiting for Superman or Captain America, men and women of unimpeachable character and superhuman abilities to save the day. What our real heroes inform us is that, as the song says, “If I can, you can too.” Also, and more importantly these days (from “Saving Private Ryan), sometimes their sacrifices beg us to look in the mirror and say to ourselves “Earn this.” Michael Alcorn is a teacher and writer who lives in Arvada with his wife and three children. Schmidt, both of whom live near the mountain, were among the Clear Creek residents who supported renaming the peak and the roads that share its name. “The least we can do is not remind communities of past trauma but honor these spaces that were never ours in the first place,” Presnell said. Clear Creek officials have explained that the roads that share the mountain’s name wouldn’t automatically change names if the USBGN approves the Mestaa’ehehe Mountain petition. Instead, the county will eventually have to decide whether and how to rename those roads, but there’s no formal proposal or process yet. Greg Markle, who lives along Trail Creek, wondered whether the nearby mountains of Chief, Warrior and Papoose should be renamed as well and said he would support that effort. Commissioner Randy Wheelock described how the subject has come up in discussions with tribal representatives, but the conversation hasn’t run its course yet. Of those who oppose the name
change, East Clear Creek resident Linda Windsheimer stated that the mountain’s current name doesn’t bother her but a Cheyenne name would. “Change it to something benign like Sunshine or Snowflake Mountain, but I do not want any of my tax dollars to go for renaming this mountain,” she wrote to the commissioners. Nelson Sanders and his wife, who live in the county, also opposed the name change, saying they understand the discussion’s sensitive nature but felt renaming was going too far. Officials’ opinions Commissioner Sean Wood agreed that the current name is inappropriate but said he didn’t have a strong opinion about what the replacement name should be. He’s heard feedback from some residents who believe the name Mestaa’ehehe is confusing, which he understood. Wheelock said he’s strongly supported changing the mountain’s SEE PEAK, P16

Karen May (Ramsey) Ecker, 80, of Lakewood, CO, passed away early Saturday morning May 1, 2021. Karen is survived by her daughters Teresa Gause (Gerald), Glenda Tarran (Lance), and son Eric Ecker (Melanie), 8 Grandchildren, 9 Great-grandchildren, brothers Kenneth Ramsey (Marilyn), Samuel Ramsey (Ann), and numerous nieces and nephews. Karen is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years Eugene F. Ecker and her parents Samuel Ramsey and Elva (Morley) Ramsey. Karen was born in San Bernardino, CA, August 2, 1940. She lived in Steamboat Springs with her family until she married in 1959. Gene and Karen raised their children in Steamboat. She was active in numerous organizations from Girl Scouts to Lutheran Women’s
Missionary League. Karen was also instrumental in starting & organizing the Buddy Werner League & Girls Pigtail Softball League for local youth in the “boat”. In 1982, Gene and Karen moved to Lakewood where Karen spent her years running & coaching youth bowling leagues. She will be eternally loved and remembered for the opportunities she brought into the lives of countless children. oloradans love to tout the state’s sunshine with the warmth and mood boost it provides, but the sun’s rays also are something to be reckoned with, especially as we get into the swing of summer. Skin-care experts and doctors say the two biggest issues are preventing skin cancer and implementing anti-aging measures, especially since the sun’s ultraviolet light can be so damaging. “A healthy dose of sunlight is really good for our bodies because our bodies make vitamin D,” said Brooke Sarmiento, founder and creator of Bee-Och skin-care products based in Fort Lupton. “(Sunlight) boosts mood, helps boost immunity and can ward off infections.” However, too much sunlight is not a good thing, the experts said, noting that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70, and more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the United States than all other cancers combined. In addition, sun can damage skin, causing it to age prematurely. Ultraviolet rays penetrate into the skin, damaging the elastic fibers that keep skin firm and accelerating production of the pigment melatonin, allowing wrinkles to develop and age spots to appear. Neither is good for skin, which is the body’s largest organ, and both are mostly preventable. Skin cancer The Skin Cancer Foundation and

the Colorado Melanoma Foundation preach constantly about the benefits of sunscreen every day, not just when you are planning a day in the sun. Even better, wear a hat and clothing to keep skin from sun exposure or stay out of the sun as much as possible, especially during the hottest part of the day. Not all sunscreens are created equal, the experts say, and it’s important for people to follow the directions. The Skin Cancer Foundation offers a seal of recommendation on sunscreens and other skincare products that have an SPF — which stands for sun protection factor — of at least 15. HOW TO LOWER SKIN CANCER RISK Skin cancer statistics
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation: • On average, a person’s risk for melanoma doubles if they have had more than five sunburns, but just one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life. • When detected early, the five-year survival rate for melanoma is 99%. • In the United States, more than 9,500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day, and more than two people die of the disease every hour. • Regular daily use of an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen reduces the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma by about 40% and melanoma by 50%.
Preventing skin cancer, aging
• Clothing is the best defense against skin
cancer and an easy way to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. The more skin you can cover, the better, with light-colored clothes. • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and UVblocking sunglasses. • Wear SPF15 or higher sunscreen daily and SPF30 or higher sunscreen for extended outdoor activity. • Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. • Examine your skin from head to toe monthly and have it checked by a dermatologist yearly.

t’s difficult to imagine the challenge that an artist faces when they’re used to rehearsing and performing as part of a group, and suddenly find themselves in a situation where they must work on their craft alone. That’s the situation orchestras and choirs faced all over the country, and the Denvermetro area’s Alpine Chorale is no exception. The Chorale - based in Arvada, but made up of people from Lakewood, Westminster, Wheat Ridge, Thornton, Centennial, Denver, Golden, Northglenn and more - normally has about 70 members, but the challenges members faced practicing by themselves or via zoom proved extremely dispiriting for many. “It was tough at first for everyone, but we were determined to move ahead with our singers and not take a break, like so many groups did,” said Dr. David Farwig, the
chorale’s artistic director. “It’s worth the time and effort, and it has been a lot of effort to keep the group together. We’re down to about 45 members, but the people who stuck with it have really committed.” That commitment has paid off. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the group has done two virtual performances - one around Christmas and the other a spring celebration - but now it’s gearing up to kick off the summer with a free performance at McIlvoy Park, 5750 Upham St. in Olde Town Arvada, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 13. The title of the performance is “Our Road Home: Emerging from the Pandemic,” and its aim is to create a feeling of returning to the comfort of the familiar and honoring those who helped each of us get through the pandemic, said Christa Geyer, the chorale’s executive director. “I really hope people come away with
those feelings from hearing the pieces,” she said. “There’s a lot of meaning to the pieces that have been chosen, and we hope everyone feels renewed that hears it.” Following the McIlvoy concert, the Alpine Chorale will resume its regular performance schedule, which kicks off in the autumn. The Alpine Chorale performs a different series of songs (running the gamut from classical and Celtic to Broadway and pop) three times a year. As if to make up for lost time, plans are eagerly being made for the 2021-22 season, which Geyer and Farwig hint will include some exciting collaborations. “It’s been extraordinary hearing the choir in person again, even if it’s not the normal size we’re used to,” Farwig said. “There’s an incredible energy, excitement and joy SEE READER, P15

Foothills Animal Shelter gets a catio New outdoor space, which cats can access on their own, will be a boon for cats used to being outside BY PAUL ALBANI-BURGIO PALBANIBURGIO@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
One of the longstanding problems with animal shelters is that cats are usually relegated to being secondclass citizens within them, Foothills Animal Shelter Executive Director Connie Howard says. “Animal shelters were designed for dogs, they just were, and cats became this sort of aside that often were put in substandard spaces and too-small cages,” she said. “And we often didn’t know a lot about the behavior and needs of cats.” But at Foothills, the addition of a new fenced in outdoor space the staff are calling a “catio” is the latest step to changing that and providing a better environment for the increasing number of cats that are end up spending time in the shelter. The new space, which was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting event on June 4, contains toy and play equipment designed for cats. Cats housed in an updated space designed specifically for cats that have adjusted to shelter life will be able to access the space on their own whenever they want via their own

doors leading into it (another space for cats that are still adjusting to the shelter is also being updated). Howard said the space will be particularly helpful for those cats that are used to being able to roam freely outside. “For those cats that have been indoor/outdoor cats, often the transition to the shelter can be really challenging,” she said. “So we are trying to do a lot to help those cats and we are excited to say today that this new catio is part of that.” The patio was funded by Donna Toeroek, a longtime donor to the shelter who said she has “a big heart for cats.” “Connie said ‘let’s see if we can make a catio,’” said Toeroek. “And I said `what the heck is catio?’ But then I thought what a good because some of the cats I adopted were outside most of the time and it’s an adjustment. And now to see it, it’s really amazing.”

name for years, and felt that renaming it after Owl Woman would honor her and her legacy of peace. “We’re not here just to change a name,” Wheelock continued. “We’re trying to do a tiny bit of rectification and become more educated in the process.” Commissioner George Marlin remarked on the very high rate of violence toward indigenous women, saying he hoped that changing the mountain’s name would change people’s attitudes and prevent vio-
lence toward indigenous women. Marlin also pointed out that landmarks in other states with the same name have been renamed or are going through the process. So, the only visitors last year were cyclists, trail runners, researchers, and trail restoration volunteers. On Friday, though, the highway reopened to the general motoring public for the first time since September 2019. At 8 a.m., the gates near Echo Lake were thrown open and dozens of cars briefly stopped at the welcome station before starting the 14-mile ascent. At the summit, photographers, skiers, out-of-state tourists and other visitors were reveling in the long-awaited panoramas and the breathtakingly blue sky. “We’re a very happy bunch,” Brilz said of Friday’s first wave of visitors. “I missed it last year, and I wanted to make sure to have that experience this year.” While the highway is now open for the season, the U.S. Forest Service is requiring reservations for those wishing to visit and park between 8

He’s typically at the summit around sunrise to photograph the mountain goats and their young, and then stops at the Echo Lake Lodge for cinnamon rolls afterward. “I’m glad we’re getting back to a sense of normalcy,” Paul continued.

LITTLETON — In the 90-degree heat Saturday afternoon, top-ranked Chatfield sweated out 7-6 victory over Class 5A Jeffco League rival Dakota Ridge. “It was crazy, but that’s Jeffco baseball,” Chatfield coach Brett Pieratt said about Dakota Ridge bring the tying run to the plate after sophomore Thomas Hartman belted a 2-run home run to make it a 1-run game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Chatfield senior lefty Colby Cruser didn’t wilt after giving up the home run on the first pitch he threw after coming in relief for starter Matthew Lighthall. Cruser struck out the next batter — Dakota Ridge senior Ben Gultig — to end the game. “I felt loose and my arm was feeling pretty good. There are pitchcount rules and I let my pitch-count
get a little too high,” Lighthall said after coming out with 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh inning after striking out 15 batters. “We’ve got plenty of guys in the pen who can come in and close it.” Dakota Ridge (7-6, 5-2 in 5A Jeffco) had only four hits on the game, but three of the hits were home runs. Senior Logan Balfanz had a solo run in the first inning. Senior Bennett Gregory had a 2-run blast off Lighthall in the sixth inning to cut the Chargers’ lead to 5-4. Then there was Hartman’s blast to make it a 1-run game again. “We had our fingers crossed,” Pieratt said after Hartman hit the 2-run home run on the first pitch he saw from Cruser. “Colby does a good job. ARVADA — Evergreen’s girls soccer team is one win away from capturing another Class 4A Jeffco League champion title. “League title would be huge for us,” Evergreen senior Myla Stewart said after a 2-1 victory against D’Evelyn at the North Area Athletic Complex on Thursday, June 3. “With COVID last year we call it back-to-back. That league title is almost more important than state (qualifying) because we play in one of the hardest conferences in Colorado.” Evergreen won the 4A Jeffco League title in 2019 on its way to a state runner-up finish in the 4A state tournament two years ago. The COVID pandemic completely wiped out the Spring 2020 season. The Cougars — ranked No. 1 in the CHSAANow.com 4A poll — had to hang on against a desperate D’Evelyn squad that was coming off back-to-back losses to 5A’s No. 3 Valor and Green Mountain. The No. 5 Jaguars was in a must-win situation to have a chance to qualify for
the 16-team state tournament. “Playing D’Evelyn is always my favorite game of the year,” Evergreen coach Peter Jeans said. “I told the girls before the game I don’t believe in my 15 years either team has won by more than a goal. I love this game. It had a playoff feel to it.” Stewart got Evergreen (9-0, 8-0 in 4A Jeffco) on the board early with a goal in the 16th minute. The ball came to the senior striker in the middle of D’Evelyn’s goal box and Stewart delivered her 9th goal of the season. “I saw net and I took it,” Stewart said of her goal in the 16th minute. “When I turned around I had all 17 of my teammates cheering me on. I think this was one of the first games this year we’ve fully played as a team.” The Cougars dominated possession against D’Evelyn (5-3-1, 5-2-1) for the majority of the first half. Gultig wasn’t sure if the umpire had called a ball or a strike. “It was crazy,” Lighthall said of the final inning. “There wasn’t a doubt in my mind he (Cruser) wouldn’t get it done.” Offensively, senior Quenton Low did his damage early with a monster 2-run home run in the top of the first inning. “We barreled up a couple of balls early,” Low said of his 2-run home run in the first inning that was followed up by sophomore Mason Lowe’s 2-run shot in the sixth inning. “You can’t be mad about 11 hits.” Chatfield (11-2, 6-1) had four straight hits from the 6 to 9 hole hitters in the top of the seventh inning that produced two key insurance runs. Junior Mason Cowgill had an RBI double and senior Drew Lytle drove in another run with an RBI single. Dakota Ridge junior Gavin Kaiser had a strong five innings on the mound giving up just three runs on five hits. “Every time we play Dakota Ridge it’s a grind,” Pieratt said. “It’s always a 1-run game.” The win kept Chatfield No. 1 in the RPI standings. Valor Christian (11-2, 7-0) defeated Chatfield 3-1 a few days
earlier to clinch the conference title for the Eagles. “The goal is host a regional and hopefully see Valor again,” Lighthall said of the bounce-back win after the loss to Valor. “A loss like that you have to come back and just play your game to get the win. That is what we did today.” Heading into the final week of the regular season, Chatfield and Valor are locks to make the 24-team regional field. Dakota Ridge, Ralston Valley and Lakewood are right on the bubble to make the postseason. “This games are important,” Low said of the high school baseball season extended three weeks due to COVID this year. “Growing up with all these kids my entire life it’s fun getting this last round in.” Chatfield will be without pitcher Logan Carlisle if the Chargers make it all the way to the second week of the state tournament scheduled for June 25 and 26. The hard-throwing Carlisle reports to the Air Force Academy on June 24. “The vibe is strange,” Pieratt said. “Our seniors graduated three weeks ago. We are practicing sometime in the morning. It’s been a little weird for us, but the great thing is we have great senior leadership. They have adapted and have led the way. Another playofflike game.” D’Evelyn concludes its regular season against Wheat Ridge on Monday, June 7, at Lakewood Memorial Field. Unfortunately for the Jaguars it will likely be a season finale too. “There is a very slim chance. We’d have to have a lot of cards fall into place,” Bervik said of the Jaguars’ postseason chances with the field limited to 16 teams instead of the normal 32 teams. “It’s definitely a bummer because (4A) Jeffco usually has five or six teams make the tournament. effco Sustainable Lands and Safer Homes (SLASH) is hosting a summer-long program of collection sites where you can drop off tree debris and other organic material. The 2021 slash collection will be each weekend at various locations throughout Jefferson County until Oct. 31.
What can you bring? Slash includes tree debris and limbs with a maximum length of 8 feet and a maximum diameter of 6 inches. You can also bring loose pine needles, tree bark and pine cones.
What’s not allowed? Slash sites won’t accept household trash, tree stumps, metal of any kind, rocks, yard waste/ grass clippings, construction materials or lumber. In addition, they will not accept paper or plastic bags. All bagged material must be emptied into the collection pile.
