While contracting COVID-19 has generally been considered far less risky for those in younger age groups than it is for their grandparents or even parents, JCPH Executive Director Dawn Comstock said it is still important for kids to be vaccinated because they can spread the virus to friends and family.
With suicide attempts on the rise, and emergency rooms statewide filling up with psychiatric patients, Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHC) declared a state of emergency last week. During a special round-table discussion on May 25, health experts said they are seeing dramatic increases in young patients suffering from depression, anxiety, and feelings of isolation and social disconnectedness. Participants in the panel agreed hospital beds are filling up, resources are running low and more help from the county, state and federal levels are needed. According to statistics provided in the hour-long discussion, the leading cause of death for children and young adults, starting at age 10, is suicide in Colorado. According to 2021 data from Mental Health America, Colorado ranks 42nd in youth mental health services. CHC has hospitals and services throughout the Denver metro area, including locations in Arapahoe, Jefferson, Douglas, Denver and Adams counties.

When the Pfizer vaccine was approved for use in kids ages 12-15 just three weeks before the end of the school year in Jeffco, Jefferson County Public Health was faced with its latest challenge in a year full of them. “We were asked to hit all of our
schools in the next two weeks,” said Marius Nielsen, who has been helping coordinate vaccination efforts for JCPH. Hitting as many schools as possible was important, Nielsen said, because JCPH knew that they presented the best place to reach as many 12-15 year olds as possible. In total, the district was able to hold events at 34 schools out of the 155 in the district. The urgency had also increased in recent weeks as COVID-19 cases spiked significantly among those ages 10-19 and 20-29 around the end

It’s Tuesday morning, and drivers once again are lined up in an RTD parking garage near Wadsworth and Colfax to receive a COVID vaccination. Among Stride Community Health staffers, EMTs giving shots and folks waiting their turn, Congressman Ed Perlmutter (D), mixes, listens and learns more about the operation. Perlmutter can often be found in his district, holding regular community meetings with constituents. This day he was underscoring the point that federal legislation his party pushed through helped make events like the vaccination event possible. “They’ve (Stride) really got it down to an art,” he says. “They’ve got the van that they were able to buy with funds that we provided with the American Rescue Plan and the CARES Act, and they’ve been able to bring these shots to where the people are.” Having had the virus himself, Perlmutter has little doubt a vaccination is by far, the better way to go. “We don’t want to see another surge like we see in Japan right now, which may cancel the Olympics. We don’t want to see a surge like India has had — where it’s just

There’s a lot of continued research to refine the vaccines to deal with the variants. There’s a lot of support for public health — for making sure the community is healthy— physically and mentally.” Looking forward, Perlmutter said he thinks the American Rescue Plan anticipates the potential need for booster shots for Americans, and he’s confident science and the administration will be able to answer the call when it happens. “We know we can do things in a very big way to protect the health of the nation,” he said. Allison Draayer, Stride’s Director of Community of Care, says demand is tapering off but they’ll be at that same location, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., through the end of July, after which they plan to offer vaccinations as long as there is a need. “We’re just going to go where the community would like us to go,” she said. Eric Garcia is a union stagehand for live events. He’s anxious to get his vaccination and get back to work. He said getting the shot isn’t a

requirement, but thinks it’s best for everybody concerned, to get it. “I’m looking so forward to (getting) it. Red Rocks events have started, but we’re not at full capacity — we’re trying to get there,” he says. “I’m going to Jimmy Buffet,” Perlmutter replies. Once again, he points to the legislation Democrats passed and the money that’s gone to restaurants and shuttered venues, before quickly moving on to say hello to a man who’s just received his shot.
According to Perlmutter’s office, as part of the $1.88 trillion American Rescue Plan, approximately $60 billion was provided for COVID testing and vaccine activities. Specifically, Colorado received $131 million for community health centers to expand vaccine access. In addition, Colorado received $56 million to ramp up mobile distribution, increased sites and extended hours, and expanded capacity to improve vaccine availability, particularly to underserved communities.

The Metropolitan Fire Chiefs (Metro) Association has named West Metro Fire Chief Don Lombardi as the group’s new President. The association brings together fire chiefs from large metropolitan fire agencies around the world to share information and focus on major issues effecting policy changes in the fire service. Mem-
bers of the association are fire chiefs of districts or departments with at least 350 fully paid career fire fighters. “This past year has been a time of unprecedented challenges for the fire and emergency medical services community,” Lombardi said.“The COVID-19 pandemic showed us again just how important it is to share information and best practices across all agencies
as we work to serve our communities. I’m honored to help lead the efforts of the Metro Chiefs as we move forward.” The Metropolitan (Metro) Fire Chiefs Association was founded in 1965, for the purpose of bringing fire service professionals together to address the challenges of largecity departments that were becoming increasingly complex. Today the association includes fire chiefs
from Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Chiefs who are members of the association also belong to the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Firefighter safety continues to be a primary focus for the Metro Chiefs.

Parents sentenced in fentanyl death of toddler Father already on parole when daughter’s death occurred BY BOB WOOLEY BWOOLEY@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Rashad Turner, 31, and Denisha Woodsking, 30, have been sentenced in the death of their daughter, two-year-old Jada’Marie Glenn-Turner. Jada’Marie died of fentanyl intoxication at the Crosslands Motel at 715 Kipling Street in Lakewood, Feb. 24, 2020. On March 1, 2021, Mr. Turner and Ms. Woodsking each pleaded guilty to Child Abuse Resulting in
Serious Bodily Injury ( a class 3 felony). Last month, District Court Judge Phillip McNulty sentenced Turner, who had three prior felonies and was on probation at the time of the toddler’s death, to 20 years in prison. The maximum sentence Turner faced was 22 years. May 25, Woodsking, who faced the same potential sentence (16-22 years) as Turner, was given the minimum, 16 year sentence. According to a Colorado First Judicial District press release, when police responded to the motel the day Jada’Marie died, the child was unresponsive and they determined her to be deceased. During a search of the motel room, police found a trash bag that contained several drugs including
Xanax, oxycontin, heroin, Suboxone, and marijuana. Following the autopsy and toxicology report, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office found that Jada’Marie had ingested fentanyl that was present in the motel room; her cause of death was ruled as fentanyl intoxication. At Woodsking’s sentencing hearing, Senior Deputy District Attorney Kelley Dziedzic told the court, “we do not doubt the significant grief experienced by Ms. Woodsking and her family, however, this case didn’t occur in a vacuum,” as she detailed Ms. Woodsking’s involvement and criminal history and asked the court to impose the same twenty-year prison sentence as Mr. Turner. SDDA Dziedzic argued that “twenty-years would
serve as recognition of the seriousness of the offense.” Woodsking addressed the court, speaking of the tremendous loss she suffered as a result of her carelessness. “Jada’Marie was beautiful, smart, and she loved her family,” she said. “All I can do now is grow and get the help I need so I can be a better mom.” McNulty told Woodsking he was sorry for the loss of Jada’Marie; even though she’d had a hand in it. “I can’t imagine losing a child,” he said. McNulty said he did find significant differences in Ms. Woodsking’s involvement and background, in comparison to Mr. Turner, which accounted for the lighter sentence for her.

National Association of Realtors’ Latest Member Profile Reveals Drop In Realtors’ Median Income Despite the pandemic and the shortage of active listings, the membership of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) grew by 5.7% in 2020 over 2019. Perhaps it was because people lost their hourly or salaried jobs and moved toward self-employed occupations such as real estate. Real estate has always attracted people who perceive it as a high income profession. They don’t realize that the “80/20 rule” applies as much to real estate as it does to any profession. While that rule would suggest that 20% of Realtors earn 80% of the income, it’s actually worse. I would estimate that 10% of us earn 90% of the income. According to NAR, the sales volume per Realtor dropped to $2.1 million. With our median sales price in Denver’s MLS at $438,239 in 2020, that’s about five closings per Realtor. And keep in mind that only half of licensed agents are members of NAR. I consider NAR members (“Realtors”) the agents who are serious about real estate, since Realtor dues are about $500 per year. Licensees don’t join a Realtor brokerage unless they hope and expect to justify that expenditure. I’ve been a Realtor for nearly 20 years, so I know a lot of fellow agents, yet it continues to surprise me that most listings in my own city are by agents — usually Realtors — I’ve never heard of. Looking at the six active listings in Golden right now, I’ve only heard of one of the listing agents, and he had only 10 sold listings in the past 12 months. Another of the six had one sold listing, a third agent had two sold listings, and a fourth agent had zero sold listings in the last 12 months. (I had 25 sold listings.) Each year, NAR surveys its membership on a wide variety of topics. The 2021 Member Profile was based on 18,209
respondents. Here are some of the results. The median gross income of Realtors has never been over $50,000 per year, and it fell 13% from $49,700 in 2019 to $43,330 in 2020, according to the Member Profile. And that is gross income. Realtors are typically self-employed and have lots of expenses, with the median for 2020 being $5,330. That brings the median net income down to $38,000. Depending on family size, that is only two to three times the poverty level! The largest expense for most Realtors is vehicle expenses — $1,200. (My largest expense is, no surprise, advertising!) For Realtors who specialize in residential real estate, the median net income for real estate activities in 2020 was only $23,500. Only 73% of residential specialists said that real estate activities provided 75% or more of their personal income. Only 56% of residential Realtors say that it is their only occupation. 29% say it has never been their primary occupation. Realtors with 16 or more years in the business had a median gross income of $75,000 in 2020, down from $86,500 in 2019. Realtors with 2 years or less in the business had median gross incomes of $8,500, down from $8,900 in 2019. Missing from the report is how many members (who probably thought real estate was their path to wealth) dropped out in their first or second year of membership. Of the respondents to NAR’s survey who specialize in residential real estate, 23% reported zero transactions in 2020. Another 32% reported between 1 and 5 transactions in 2020. The median was 4 transactions for males and 5 transactions for females. Notably, the median for White/Caucasian residential Realtors was 7

transactions, compared to between 2 and 3 transactions for other racial groups. Here are some other interesting findings from the 2021 Member Profile that you may find interesting. The median age of a Realtor is 54, unchanged from when I entered the business (as a 54-year-old) 19 years ago. The typical Realtor has 8 years’ experience. 17% of respondents specializing in residential real estate said it was their 1st career. 49% said it was their 2nd career, and 34% said it was their 3rd or more. Only 79% of respondents were “very certain” they would remain in the business another two years. Most Realtors worked 35 hours per week in 2020, down from 36 hours in 2019. (I work at least 60 hours per week!) Text messaging is the top method of communication that members use with their clients, at 93%, followed by phone calls (90%) and email (89%). 88% of Realtors work as “independent contractors,” meaning they live on commission income alone, have no tax withholding and pay all their own expenses. Realtors change firms a lot. The median tenure of Realtors with their current firm is five years, down from six years in 2019. 8% work for a brokerage that was bought or merged in the last two years. 65% of Realtors are females, up from
64% last year. (As I understand it, RE/ MAX was the first company to hire female agents, back about 1970. Before that, our industry was virtually all men — and they wore suits and ties to work.) 82% of Realtors own their own home, and 37% own a secondary property. 86% of brokerages are independent, non-franchised, mostly with a single office and typically only two full-time licensees. The typical residential brokerage has operated for 14 years. (That’s us! I founded Golden Real Estate in July 2007.) Brokerages typically got 30% of their customer inquiries in 2020 from referrals by past clients, 25% from repeat business with prior clients, 10% from their website, and 10% from social media. (Golden Real Estate gets well over 75% of our business from readers of this advertisement, which has appeared every week without fail for over 15 years.) Firms with only one office typically had 18 transactions in 2018. (Golden Real Estate closed 45 seller sides and 22 buyer sides in the last 12 months.) Of respondents to NAR’s survey, 57% were White/Caucasian, 20% were Hispanic/Latino, 16% were Black/African American, and 8% were Asian/Pacific Islander. 60% were female and 38% were male. 89% were heterosexual, 3% were gay/ lesbian, and 6% preferred not to say.

Avery Wilson isn’t trying to change the world — just a really painful part of it. Wilson, a 2021 Lakewood High School graduate, has been working for the past three years to end the stigma around mental illness and reduce teen suicide. Now, that hard work is being recognized in the form of a scholarship from the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). Wilson has been awarded the Mental Health Awareness Scholarship after writing an essay about her efforts to support young people who often suffer in silence, sometimes to the point of taking their own lives. Teen suicide is a topic Wilson is all too familiar with. Three years ago, her best friend, high school sophomore Robbie Eckert, took his life. Wilson says she had no clue the boy she ate lunch with every day was suicidal. “It was a complete sur-

prise to everyone who knew him. We had no idea it was going to happen,” she said. “I had just gotten my driver’s license that day (of the suicide) and we were talking about being able to go off campus for lunch, and
all of the other things we’d be able to do.” His death, heartbreaking as it was to her, was also a catalyst to take action. She joined others affected by the loss, including Eckert’s parents, in founding Robbie’s

Wilson says the foundation offers Hope Groups where teens can get together to talk and interact in a safe environment. They’ve also created a handbook, A Guide By Teens on How to Talk to Teens, written from the perspective of a teen, to help teach adults to communicate better with their kids. “We don’t have all of the answers,” she says. “But we want to start that (mental health awareness) conversation.” This fall, Wilson will be heading east, to the University of New Hampshire, where she’ll study Ocean Engineering. She says she’s hoping to continue volunteering and being an advocate for mental health and suicide prevention on her new campus. The thought of which reminds her of a Jana Stanfield quote that’s become a favorite. “I cannot do all the good that the world needs. The city had considered retrofitting the office building, but determined it would be more cost effective to tear it down and start from scratch.

There is also still some risk of serious complications from the virus, including hospitalization and possibly death, for people in that age group. At one such vaccine distribution event held on May 27 at Bell Middle School in Golden, a team of about 10 nurses spent three hours vaccinating students, family members and anyone else who showed up. The events were promoted by the schools, Nielsen said, but no advanced registration or appointment was required. Christine Billings, JCPH’s COVID-19 emergency response commander, said that vaccinating kids is basically like vaccinating anyone else, except that a parent needs to provide permission. “That hasn’t been much of an issue,” Billing said. “Either the parent is present or they have usually been able to provide clinical consent by phone.” Nielsen said she has also observed several situations where a child’s desire to get vaccinated has led their parent to also do so. “That’s something we are seeing a lot is the child has been exposed to information that leads them to want to get it (the vaccine) and that ends up being the catalyst for the parent who has gotten it,” she said. Nielsen said that about 11,000 people had been vaccinated at the JCPH school events, and the organization was hoping to add about 2,000 more to that at the remaining events. She and Billings said that while JCPH considers that number a success given the limited amount of time, it is also getting ready to continue to target vaccine eligible kids at pop-up vaccine clinics at pools, farmer’s markets, libraries, youth sporting events and other places frequented by kids. “We have a lot of big plans for once schools close but we are also taking any and all ideas from the community about where to set up
clinics to reach people who haven’t been reached,” said Billings, who said people can call 303-239-7000 to make a request for a clinic location. Nielsen also noted that JCPH now has lots of capacity of all three vaccines as well as mobile clinics that are capable of stopping at up to six sites in a day. The week before, one clinic briefly even set up on a busy street corner at the request of a community member. Making sure vaccines are accessible is now more important than ever, she said, because with 70% of the county having already received the vaccine and supply now exceeding demand, those who remain generally haven’t been vaccinated because they’ve either struggled with access or are vaccine-hesitant. “With both of those populations, it really helps to have them see the vaccine in their community,” she said. Billings compared the latest vaccine distribution efforts to a jigsaw puzzle “where we are just trying to put the pieces in the right places.” “Gone are the days where we would administer 1,000 doses a day at a single site,” she said. “Now 50100 doses is really good.” Of course, there is still one large population that is still not eligible for the vaccine: children under 11. But with that population expected to be approved for vaccination later this year, Billings said JCPH is already thinking about how to reach that population — and said the approach will likely be different from how the county aimed to reach older populations. “I think with the 5-11 year olds we will really be looking to have those vaccinations given by a trusted pediatrician,” said Billings, who said pediatricians will have the advantage of having earned families trust, which could be more important when it comes to vaccinating younger children, and could also deliver the COVID-19 vaccine alongside other vaccines typically given to children. “At that point it will start to look like a typical vaccine like the chicken pox or measles,” she said.

On May 24, Wheat Ridge city council gave a second reading and unanimously passed an ordinance that will prohibit open carry, or non-permitted concealed carry, of deadly weapons on any city owned property. Council member Korey Stites read the bill into record: “Council bill 05-221, an ordinance prohibiting deadly weapons on city property and making other amendments consistent with state weapons laws. At issue, a growing concern exists today with increasing gun and deadly weapons violence throughout the United States. These acts of violence contribute to increased personal safety concerns for visitors and guests at city owned properties and for employees of the city. City owned buildings and properties should be considered safe, available and open. The lack of deadly weapons in those settings contributes to a
sense of safety for visitors, guests, elected officials and employees.” Stites said there’s currently a section in the city code that deals with weapons, but it doesn’t specifically prohibit the possession of deadly weapons on city owned property. Patrick Goff, Wheat Ridge City Manager, said state law allows municipalities to regulate the possession of certain firearms and deadly weapons in specific settings. Lakewood, Arvada, Golden, Denver and Jefferson County all have similar bans. “What Colorado law does not allow, is for the city of Wheat Ridge to prohibit individuals who carry concealed firearms, and who possess a concealed carry permit,” Goff said. “So, I want to be clear we don’t have that authority unless we provide for security at municipal buildings, security officers and magnetometers at entrances to municipal buildings.” He said the city’s not recommending anything be done about legally permitted concealed weapons. In Aurora, at the main regional campus in Aurora, the 52-bed emergency department is now overrun with youths in crisis. Emergency visits went up 90% in April compared to the same normal time in 2019. In declaring a pediatric mental health state of emergency, CEO Jena Hausmann said CHC has worked more than decade to expand facilities, programs, and beds to serve mental/behavioral health issues for children and teenagers. However, she noted, it is not enough with the continual increase in patients starting in 2020 and continuing at an even faster pace in 2021. “Now we are seeing our pediatric emergency departments and inpatient pediatric units overrun with kids attempting suicide and suffering from other major mental-health illness,” Hausmann said. “The current system is unsustainable, and it is hurting our children. Our children need us to rally together.” Dr. Janna Glover, CHC director of psychology training, said even though society is seeing COVID issues improve, the impacts on children and teenagers are going to continue. “Kids have dealt with chronic stress in the past year that a has interrupted their development and education,” she said. “Now, kids are asked to get back to life again and they feel completely unprepared. They are burnt out and they feel so behind that they do not know how to catch up. They feel a sense of

Through tears, David Brumbaugh, the CHC chief medical officer, said some of the cases hit too close to home. Brumbaugh said he had a ninth-grade patient who attempted suicide after failing to make the baseball team. Brumbaugh said his own son is in ninth grade and plays baseball. Brumbaugh said in his 20 years of treating pediatric patients, he has never seen such a high demand for mental health services. The stress on the system started about 15 months ago, Brumbaugh said, and the last three to four months have been even worse. “Our kids have run out of resil-
ience,” he said. “We are seeing kids who were largely functional and now the floor is falling out. They are attempting suicide.” Patricia Givens, the chief nursing officer for CHC, said, “We are tapped out in all areas. We cannot build enough beds to keep pace with demand.” Givens said hospitals are seeing children as young as 8 years old attempting suicide. CHC experts said a lot of the problems in are rural communities where training in schools and services are lacking. Experts said if teachers, counselors and staff receive more training, they can intervene and get help for children and teens before they get into a crisis mode. CHC officials said hospital beds once being used to treat patients with physical injuries and illnesses are being converted into beds for patients presenting with behavioral health issues. Besides treating patients who have attempted suicide, hospitals are seeing an increase in patients suffering from eating disorders and presenting with symptoms associated with substance abuse. Many of the health experts said the situation is going to require partnerships with county governments, health departments, school districts and state and federal agencies. Heidi Baskfield, CHC vice president of population health and advocacy, said it is going to require more funding. It is going to require more work to reach children or teens in crisis before they attempt suicide and put pressure on the healthcare system, she said. Mike DiStefano, chief medical officer in Colorado Springs, said a
major focus must be placed on prevention, where outpatient services intercept children in crisis long before they attempt suicide. Preventive services are also in crisis. Over the last few years, Baskfield said 47 facilities across the state closed. These are facilities that have traditionally provided mental health care to children and teenagers. “At a time when we are seeing volumes increase, severity increase and overall need, the system that is meant to be in place to serve these kids not only does not exist but those attempting to do this work are underwater and overwhelmed,” Baskfield said. While not present during the round-table discussion, Douglas County Commissioner Lora Thomas said the county wants to be the example other communities across the state can follow. In 2017, Douglas County started investing more than $1 million per year into mental-health services, creating a Community Response Team. In 2019, the county created the Youth Community Response Team after more than 40% of the calls for help were for residents 19 and younger. Thomas said the partnerships health experts are calling for can work statewide and the CRT program is proof. Douglas County suicide rates are decreasing and partnerships with local organizations, especially the Douglas County School District, have gone up, she said. “We want to take the success we have had here statewide,” she said. “For us, the good news is we are ready to handle the crisis with our youth.”

Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For - Song by U2 Most of us are probably familiar with this song by U2, if not, I highly recommend giving WINNING it a listen. This WORDS song popped into my head recently as I was on vacation. Yes, vacation, my first trip in 14 months. As I walked along the beach, I was scanning the sand for unusual shells, sea Michael Norton glass, or unique pieces of coral. Something I have always done when visiting a beach. Over the years I have trained my eyes to quickly identify shells of unique shape and color. On most walks along the shoreline, I will automatically find little treasures where the sea meets the sand. Sometimes I am very casual about it and a shell or piece of coral happens to jump right out at me. And other times, I am heads down in full search mode,
looking for exactly the right size, color, or shaped shell for my collection. Well on my recent trip, I found myself looking but not finding, searching but not really seeing anything. After a couple of days of coming up empty, I thought about why this could be happening. And I realized that my mind had not caught up with being on vacation yet. I realized I wasn’t quite relaxed enough to see anything popping out at me, and I wasn’t focused enough to be intentional about seeking out something special. I found myself in a weird state of work and vacation limbo. Have you ever been there? Are you there right now? Maybe it’s not searching for seashells, sea glass, or coral, but searching for something, something you aren’t quite sure about or haven’t clearly defined yet. And since what we are searching for isn’t always completely obvious, it becomes harder and harder to find. Or as the U2 song goes, “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.” We search for understanding
and we find confusion instead. We look for peace only to see conflict all around us. We want answers but only seem to come up with more questions. More than anything we seek the truth and become frustrated by half-truths or lies. We really do want to find the good in others and yet we confront disappointment time and time again. What I have found in each one of these scenarios is that we don’t find what we are looking for because we have placed ourselves in “understanding-peacehope-truth-good” limbo. When our heart and mind are in a good space, we would tend to see everything around us that is positive whether we are searching for it or not. And when we are aligned mentally, physically, and spiritually, we have the ability to become laser-focused, seeing exactly what we set out to see. Not just what we want to see, but what we are intentionally looking for when it comes to understanding, peace, hope, truth, and goodness. When we still can’t find what it is that we are looking for, we may
need a quick “checkup from the neck up,” as Zig Ziglar used to say. We may need to snap ourselves out of that weird state of limbo, somewhere between not being relaxed enough to trust our instincts and not being confident enough to pursue what it is that we want the most. Ambiguity hinders us wherever we are, at work, at home, taking a hike, or walking along the beach looking for the perfect seashell. Have you found what you are looking for yet? Have you identified whether it is because you are in limbo and not allowing yourself to be relaxed enough to come upon it naturally? Or are you simply lacking focus to do a thorough search? In particular, there is a focus on significant health disparities affecting women of color. About 700 women still die each year in the U.S. from complications due to pregnancy. American Indian, Alaska Native and Black women are two to three times more likely to die of pregnancy-related causes than white women. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two out of three pregnancy-related deaths are considered preventable. It’s a good practice to consult your doctor about contraceptives and sexually transmitted infections. Testing for cervical cancer will help detect the high-risk human papillomavirus virus which can lead to cervical cancer. And, mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, when it’s easier to treat and before it’s big enough to feel or cause symptoms. Some diseases such as diabetes are not so easily detected without medical tests. Women can develop diabetes during pregnancy known as gestational diabetes. Others may want to be screened for diabetes mellitus, a group of diseases that
affect how your body uses blood sugar, after pregnancy. Women are twice as likely as men to experience depression, with some experiencing mood symptoms related to hormone changes during puberty, pregnancy and perimenopause. Anxiety screenings may also be appropriate given the high levels of anxiety disorders pregnant or postpartum women experience, as well as women who may be victims of domestic violence. As I noted earlier, women have a harder time quitting smoking than men because they metabolize nicotine, the addictive ingredient in tobacco, faster than men. Metabolism differences may explain why nicotine replacement therapies, such as patches or gum, work better in men than women. Knee injuries, such as ACL tears, are more likely to occur in women and girls while playing sports. This difference is due to aspects of a woman’s anatomy. And, because there may be differences in symptoms of coronary artery disease and heart attack between women and men, the results of common screening tests may
also be different. These differences can lead to a misdiagnosis. For women aged 50 and continuing to age 75, there are additional health concerns: • Colorectal cancer screenings are encouraged. • And osteoporosis is more common because they have less bone mass than men and can experience more bone loss during hormonal changes at menopause. It’s also very important to be attentive to mental health, including managing stress and getting enough sleep, getting active and attending regular checkups and well-women visits with a primary care physician or advanced care practitioner. Amidst all of these medical warnings and concerns, there is good news. Women can begin and achieve better health at any age or life circumstances. For those who’ve recently dreamed about hanging a “Gone Fishing” sign on the window and heading to the great outdoors, this weekend is the perfect time to do it. Colorado’s annual Free Fishing Weekend takes place June 5 and 6. So, if you haven’t gotten around to getting that fishing license yet, or are a beginning angler just learning the ropes, opportunity awaits. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) invites both residents and nonresidents of all ages to participate. Among Lakewood’s participating locations are Bear Creek Reservoir, home to naturally reproducing brown trout and stocked with rainbow trout annually by CPW. You could also land a saugeye, perch, smallmouth bass or bluegill. Lakewood Park Ranger Luke Wilson recommends trying small worms and PowerBait to lure in those prize-winning trout from the reservoir at Bear Creek Lake Park. Other locations include Main

Attorney, explained that areas where open carry will not be permitted, defined as city property in the ordinance, include all buildings, facilities, real property and portions thereof owned by the city — this includes the streets, which the city owns. Goff made clear that although people will not be allowed to open carry while walking on city streets, gun owners will still be allowed to transport them in private vehicles. The new ordinance will take affect later this month.

Joel Zachrich
8/3/1952 - 5/2/2021 Joel Zachrich, 68, a resident of Eaton Rapids, Michigan died on Sunday, May 2 at his residence and in the company of his dear friend Deb Snider. He was a prior resident of Defiance, Ohio, Dearborn Heights, Michigan and Lakewood, Colorado. Joel was born August 3, 1952 in Defiance, Ohio to Charles and Mary (Hill) Zachrich. He grew up fishing, hunting and exploring nature in Northwest Ohio. He graduated from Crestwood High school in Dearborn Heights, Michigan in 1970. That same year he took his first flying lesson as a graduation present. Joel continued to fly, adding licenses and time to his aviation career. His career as a pilot began at the Defiance Ohio County airport doing charters and air taxi flights. He did flying stints in Plymouth, Michigan, Birmingham, AL, Albuquerque, NM, Phoenix, AZ and Las Vegas, NV. All of these stops enabled him to make the progression to turbine engine and, finally jet aircraft. After this period, Joel started flying 747’s internationally. He visited every continent, but Antarctica. Joel had reached his goal in life. His career, family and life goals had been achieved. In 2015, Joel retired from his corporate flying job. Joel moved to Eaton Rapids, Michigan to hunt, fish and teach soaring. Joel was determined to become involved in his newly adopted residence in Eaton County, Michigan. Though retired, he was active in the
local organizations of AARP, CERT, Eaton County Republican Party and with the Eaton County Sheriff Office. Surviving are his children Robert Zachrich and Sarah Zachrich of Lakewood, Colorado; his brother Charles (Connie) Zachrich II of Castle Rock, CO, and sister, Deborah Z. (Roger) Gunderson of Fort Collins, CO. Preceding him in death were his father; Charles Zachrich, mother; Mary Zachrich, brother: Michael and Greg Zachrich. He loved his dog Trapper, who survives him and is now a companion to Deb Snider, a very close friend of Joel’s, who extended kindness in making his last year of life better. If you’re among the millions ready to shed some pent-up energy as the summer of 2021 dawns, here’s a few events coming back or scaling up this year. First Friday art walks After a hiatus in 2020, the First
Friday Art Walk returns to the Art District on Santa Fe on June 4 and continuing the first Friday of every month thereafter. The signature art walk in the Denver area, Santa Fe’s takes visitors into a variety of galleries, studios, lofts and alleys. The District is big, but most of the action is on Santa Fe Drive between 5th and 11th streets. Masks and social distancing still required — for now. Other art walks are in RiNo and on South Pearl Street. DenversArtDistrict.org Film on the Rocks What could be a more Colorado moment than watching “The Shining” — inspired by Estes Park’s Stanley Hotel — at Red Rocks? Film on the Rocks is back at Colorado’s most beloved concert venue, with a twist — most of this year’s 24 cult
classics will be screened drive-in style in the lower parking lot, with Creation and Ship rocks as a backdrop. Just three films — “Casino Royale,” “Jurassic Park” and “The Princess Bride” — will be screened in the amphitheatre itself. he Arvada Center is celebrating the return of live musical theater with an experience that will be novel for both performers and audiences — musical theater outside. For the first time in 19 years, the Center is premiering a show — “Million Dollar Quartet” — in its Outdoor Amphitheatre. “The show is based on a real jam session recorded by Sam Phillips from 1956 featuring Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis,” said Rod A. Lansberry, producing artistic director of musical theatre. “It took place in a two-hour span, and the show is a lot like watching that session live. But it’s not a Vegas impersonation show — it has a storyline that carries through.” “Million Dollar Quartet” runs at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., through Friday, July 2, with performanc-
es at 8 p.m. on Tuesday through Sunday. “Million Dollar Quartet” features Zachary Andrews as Phillips, JP Coletta as Lewis, Sam Sherwood as Perkins, Andrew Frace as Cash, Nick Voss as Presley and Suzanna Champion as Dyanne. Lansberry said the Center received about 600 auditions for the roles — all virtual, due to the pandemic. Once that relatively new experience was surmounted, then came the “old is new again” experience of putting together a show. In person. For a live audience. “After two years of not performing for the actors and two years of not directing for me, it took a little while to get used to again,” he said. “But there was much more of a feeling of excitement for us to be back in front of an audience, with performers getting to do what they do.” The show features classics like “Blue
Suede Shoes” and “Walk the Line,” which means not only do the actors have to perform and play on stage, but they need to do be convincing as the well-known figures without straying into caricature. “It’s a very intricate show because of the style all these musicians played in,” Lansberry added. “We don’t want them to be doing impersonations, so all the actors did their homework to ensure they’re believable as these characters.” The original plan was for the show to be performed on the Main Stage, but when the Center’s production of “Small Mouth Sounds” was moved into that space to allow for social distancing, “Million Dollar Quartet” migrated outside. “It really fits in the amphitheater because it is very similar to the live music SEE READER, P15

After spending much of the summer of 2020 closed, Clear Creek Whitewater Park is open to floaters and boaters this year — just in time for a wet spring and some epic snowmelt. Grab a tube and head to the west end of 10th St., then walk upstream as far as your flip-flops will take you. Most folks get out around the baseball diamond to go back upstream and float the stretch again, but intrepid floaters can continue northeast through town — just make sure you get out before the Coors brewery. “Each/Other” is the first exhibition to feature the works of contemporary Indigenous artists Marie Watt (Seneca, Scottish, German) and Cannupa Hanska Luger (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Lakota, European) together and the Denver Art Museum will run it through Aug. 22 — a perfect show for viewers of any age and from Colorado or anywhere else in the world. The exhibit is contained in size — 26 mixed-media sculptures, wall hangings and large-scale installation works, along with a large artist-guided community artwork, also named “Each/Other.” Discover new works now — part of a whole new genre and perhaps later in the fall, plan to visit the familiar Native American collection when it reopens to consider possible connections. Both artists focus on collaborative art making in their practices, but this exhibit is the first time they
in 2013, leading quilting circles and exploring textile art from her unique perspective on collaboration ... Luger, a New Mexico resident, had a history of collaborative works as well, including a floor to ceiling piece, “Every One” (2018), created with large clay beads, each individually created to represent one of the many missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and transgendered people in Canada. Lukavic began to think about a collaborative show as he enjoyed the lively crowd and we are fortunate to experience the result! Catalogue author Jami Powell writes about her initial difficulty of placing these artists within any predetermined categories of Indigenous art. “By grounding their work within Indigenous understandings of place, relationality and materiality, Watt and Luger refuse Western art historical categorization and argue for a consideration of art as inseparable from our humanity,” she writes.

Mellon Curator of Native Arts John Lukavic writes in his catalogue introduction of a “seed” planted in his mind at a late-night Manhattan arts event where both artists were present and met for a first time. “Family is a deep bond ... an essential part of both Watt’s and Luger’s practices and is what helped them develop deep bonds with one another, and with me,” he writes. “They create and amplify platforms for shared experiences ... When we see collaboration in these broad terms, our eyes are open to the land, animals and processes with which we sometimes unknowingly collaborate — or even harm.” Watt, who lives in Montana, had been an artist in residence at DAM
“While we tend to think in terms of reservations, nearly 80% of us do not live on one,” Powell said, as she talks of a new space they and other contemporary BIPOC artists are creating. The centerpiece of this exhibit is a participatory sculpture, also called “Each/Other,” a large-scale shewolf, with a pelt stitched from hundreds of bandannas, contributed by more than 700 people who answered their call. According to the catalogue, “Contributors were instructed to take a bandanna-sized piece of fabric, fold it in a triangle and embroider a word, message or visual sentiment that is meaningful to them during this time of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and mail their creation to the artists. They were stitched into a giant animal pelt at Portland Garment factory, a woman-owned and environmentally-conscious fabrication studio. It was then draped over an armature created by Neal Fagan from the artist’s design.”

We’re trying to make them all (Americans With Disabilities Act) accessible.” Winters said the town is sending out a request for proposals for an engineering firm, and she expects the work to be done in fall 2022. The total project cost will be $532,500, with $426,000 coming from CDOT grants. The town will kick in the remaining funds, expecting to reap many benefits for town businesses, residents and tourists alike. Winters said the town will host meetings with the community to get input on the five projects the grant will pay for, especially since businesses are concerned about where trucks will be able to make deliveries and want to make sure the upgrades will improve the town. The five projects and the general proposals are: • Eastern crosswalk upgrade: Design an upgraded to the crossing on Highway 8 between Mount Vernon Road and Market Street, adding curb bump-outs, a pedestrian cross-
ing, pedestrian-activated flashing warnings and a raised median with planter boxes. • Highway 8 and Stone Street intersection upgrade: Intersection upgrades and traffic-calming elements on both roads in conjunction with CDOT plans to reconstruct the intersection. In addition, there will be pedestrian crossings, landscaped curb bump-outs and a pedestrian refuge island. • Mount Vernon Creek bridgecrossing upgrade: A better crossing for the Mount Vernon Creek bridge including a ramp to make it ADA accessible with curb bump-outs on the north side. • South Park Avenue crossing: An upgraded crossing of Highway 8 including a raised, planted median with an upgraded pedestrian crossing between South Park Avenue and the Highway 8/Maple Street intersection. The traffic light at South Park Avenue is expected to be removed. • Analyze and design the removal and reinstallation of parallel parking and bicycle markings.

Wheat Ridge to benefit from an urban agriculture grant STAFF REPORT
The Jefferson Conservation District (JCD) and the City of Wheat Ridge (COWR) in Jefferson County, Colorado, have been awarded an urban agriculture conservation grant for their collaborative agricultural project through a partnership with the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to boost technical capacity nationwide. JCD is one of 20 conservation districts across 14 states to receive funding. NACD and NRCS established the Urban Agriculture Conservation Grant Initiative in 2016 to help conservation districts and
their partners provide much-needed technical assistance for communityoriented agricultural projects in both urban and rural contexts. The “Regenerate Wheat Ridge: Growing Urban Agriculture Partnerships” project will increase regenerative urban agricultural production in Wheat Ridge by identifying eligible parcels of land and providing technical assistance to facilitate at least two local landowner-producer partnerships. “This grant is an innovative opportunity for Wheat Ridge gardeners, yard farmers as well as advocates for the future of local food production and new urban farmers to showcase our city’s agricultural history,” said Amanda Weaver, Wheat Ridge District III, City Coun-
cil member for Wheat Ridge. Regenerative agriculture is a broad framework of farming, grazing, and growing practices that help rebuild soil organic matter and restore degraded soil diversity. The prospective landowner-producer partnerships would connect Wheat Ridge landowners (private, public, and/or non-profit organizations) who have available land with those looking for space to practice this approach to agriculture. “This is an exciting opportunity for Wheat Ridge community members to expand regenerative agriculture practices in their own yards through education and hands-on experiences at Happiness Community Gardens,” said Wheat Ridge City Council member Rachel Hultin.
The project will also connect residents with Happiness Community Gardens through educational events to increase awareness of regenerative urban agriculture. This is the fifth round of funding awarded by NACD and NRCS, with grants totaling $5.6 million for 122 projects across 35 states. “The Urban Agriculture Conservation grants provide opportunities for conservation districts to continue their great work in new and different ways,” said NACD President Michael Crowder.“The projects we’re announcing today will help conservation districts reach new audiences and build new programs to provide technical assistance in a variety of community-oriented settings.”
Colorado ends ‘legacy admissions’ at public colleges SAT/ACT requirement also will be thing of the past BY PATTY NIEBERG THE COLORADO SUN
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill on May 25 making the state a leader in the nationwide effort to ban legacy admissions at public colleges and universities. Prateek Dutta, Colorado policy director for Democrats for Education Reform, who brought the bill idea to state lawmakers, said Colorado is the first state he has found to have enacted such a law. The bill prohibits public higher education officials from looking at “legacy preference,” or familial relationships to alumni of the institution, in their admissions process. “Just because your parent or grandparent went to one of our colleges in Colorado, that doesn’t mean that you automatically get in,” Polis said. “Because that could take the spot of somebody who is more worthy of that spot.” Legacy admissions can disproportionately harm Coloradans who are first-generation college students, people of color or those who are living in the country illegally, he added. In Colorado, nearly 63% of white
students and 67% of middle- to highincome students enroll in a bachelor’s degree program right after high school compared with only 42% of Latino students and 47% of low-income students who enroll directly from high school, according to the bill’s text. “This bill will help move us in a direction where our higher education institutions are moving towards being meritocracies — meaning that you have to earn admission because of who you are and what you can do and what your potential is. Not who your parents or grandparents were,” Polis said. While several states have tried to ban affirmative action based on race, Colorado seems to be the first to ban “affirmative action for the rich, aka legacy preferences,” said Richard Kahlenberg, director of K-12 equity and senior fellow at The Century Foundation, a progressive, independent think tank. Several universities are considering ending their practice of legacy admissions, following behind Johns Hopkins University, which made its announcement in January 2020. Texas A&M University made the decision to abolish its legacy program in 2004. In October 2019, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law requirements for colleges to disclose whether they give preferential
admissions to applicants related to donors or alumni. The bill came in response to the college admissions scandal that revealed dozens of wealthy families paid bribes to get their children into elite California universities. Polis also signed a bill on May 25 lifting requirements for public colleges in the state to consider SAT or ACT scores for first-time freshmen, encouraging what he called a more equitable and holistic approach to the admissions process and access

Golden and Valor Christian girls golf programs were able to sweep the team and individual medalist titles this spring in the Class 4A and 5A Jeffco League. Morrissey spearheaded the Demons’ run to the 4A Jeffco League team title on the Indian Tree golf course. Conifer placed second and Evergreen took third in the team standings. Valor cruised to the 5A Jeffco team title winning all five conference tournaments. Valor senior Grace Young’s 37.8 9-hole average was a full stroke better than Arvada West senior Anju Ogi to claim the 5A Jeffco medalist title. Lakewood finished second and Ralston Valley third in the 5A Jeffco team standings.

LITTLETON — It kind of felt like a summer league baseball game Friday morning at Frank DeAngelis Field on the Columbine High School campus. “It is a little weird. I’m usually playing summer ball by now,” Dakota Ridge senior Reese Randell said of playing the morning game on a weekday. “It’s fun. I’m happy we are playing in warm weather that’s a good thing.” The rivalry game between Dakota Ridge (5-3, 3-0 in 5A Jeffco) and Columbine (5-5, 1-3) was actually a key Class 5A Jeffco League showdown in the middle of the conference schedule. The Eagles stayed undefeated in league play with a dominating 17-3 victory. “It is so weird. Everything is so weird. The scores everywhere are weird,” Dakota Ridge coach Jeff Legault said after the 14-run victory over Columbine. “It’s just a weird year. We are trying to keep the guys focused and our guys are doing a good job of that. They have bought in.” Dakota Ridge got an impressive start on the mound by junior Gavin
Kaiser against the Rebels. Kaiser went five innings and gave just one unearned run to pick up his third victory this season. “I felt pretty good coming into it,” Kaiser said after giving up just two hits in five innings. “I was throwing my fastball pretty well.” Kaiser also got plenty of run support. Dakota Ridge senior Joey Cavallaro got things going with a lead-off single to start the game. He would eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Logan Balfanz to get the scoring going. The Eagles added four more runs in the top of the second inning that started with a solo home run from senior Reese Randall. “He just hung me a slider and I put a good swing on it,” Randell said of his solo home run in the 4-run second inning for the Eagles. “It was a good swing and the ball went a long way.” Dakota Ridge’s 6 through 9 hitters were extremely productive scoring nine of the Eagles’ 17 runs. “It takes a lot of stress off me,” Kaiser said about the bottom half of the Eagles’ line-up producing during SEE BASEBALL, P21

the 4-run second inning and 8-run seventh inning. Randell actually ended the scoring for Dakota Ridge. He ripped an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to cap off the offensive production. “We’ve had our times when we’ve struggled,” Randell said about the backend of the Eagles’ line-up. “When 6 through 9 are hitting you are pretty much unbeatable. You need to have the bottom of your order hitting.” Seniors Bennett Gregory, Brock Hoos, Randell and sophomore Josh Ezell did an outstanding job at the back half of the line-up. “We are not a strong offensive team. We are more pitching and defense,” Legault said after the Eagles’ largest scoring output of the season. “To score that may runs … I was pleased with that.” Freshman Cade Collins had a big game in the No. 2 hole. Dakota Ridge’s starting second baseman went 3-for-4 from the plate with 4 RBIs. He also made an outstanding play in the field chasing down a fly ball for the second out in the bottom of the seventh inning. “He (Collins) is a special baseball player. He is really good and nothing fazes him,” Legault said of the freshman. “He is one of our best hit-
ters and defenders. He is awesome.” While during a normal season the high school season would just be wrapping up, during this COVID school year the baseball season doesn’t end until the state championship games scheduled for Saturday, June 26. Dakota Ridge is scheduled for eight regular-season games between Saturday, May 29, and Friday, June 11. That’s eight games in 14 days. Legault believes his pitching staff, along with his team is up to the task. “We’ve good four good starters and we have the right amount of breaks. We’ll see,” Legault said. “We are just trying to squeeze our way into the playoffs. Trying to find a way to that top 24.” The top 24 teams in the RPI standings advance to regionals that are scheduled for Monday, June 14. “We need to win the games we should win,” Randell said. “We are going to face some really good pitchers. We’ll face someone who throws 90 mph against Chatfield. Against Valor we’ll face a good pitcher no matter who they throw. We just have to go out there and play our game.” Dakota Ridge played No. 4-ranked Valor May 29, and lost 8-7. ARVADA — Ralston Valley boys lacrosse team responded in a big way Wednesday, May 26, after suffering its first league loss to the season. The Mustangs dominated Jeffco rival Chatfield to the tune of 16-3 late Wednesday afternoon at the North Area Athletic Complex. “We were coming off a tough loss on Monday,” Ralston Valley junior Lane Kellogg said of the Mustangs’ 8-6 defeat against Monarch in a Class 5A League #2 game. “I really think we wanted this game. We were communicating, flying around and sharing the ball really well. It was amazing to see.” The Mustangs held a 5-2 halftime lead against Monarch, but the Coyotes outscored the Mustangs 6-1 in the second half. It was a completely different ending Wednesday against Chatfield for Ralston Valley. Kellogg had a monster game offensively scoring six goals. Ralston Valley closed out the game with a 10-0 run and didn’t allow Chatfield (1-5, 0-5 in league) to score in the second half. “Our focus was really just keep sharing the ball. We weren’t really thinking about the score,” ‘Kellogg said of the Mustangs’ 10-0 run to end out the game. “We really just brought it for all four quarters.” Sam Lindsey (3 goals), Nicholas Gates (2 goals) and Payton Hevers (27) all the multiple-goal games for

We’ve played some of the top teams in the state and haven’t had a four-quarter game until today.” The Mustangs’ three losses this season have come against No. 6 Denver East, No. 11 Monarch and Cherokee Trail.

Ralston Valley could still grab an automatic bid to the 12-team 5A state tournament by winning the 5A League #2 title. Fairview (5-1, 5-0) has the inside track for the conference title, but the Mustangs have a date against Fairview on June 9 at NAAC that could determine Ralston Valley’s playoff future. “Our goal is to make the playoffs. Our goal is to win a league championship every year,” Lewis said. “We’ve got three more league games.

Golden shuts out No. 4 Wheat Ridge at the NAAC BY DENNIS PLEUSS JEFFCO PUBLIC SCHOOLS
ARVADA — Golden’s girls soccer team stayed in the mix to qualify for the 16-team Class 4A state tournament scheduled to begin June 16. The Demons knocked off rival and previously undefeated Wheat Ridge 2-0 on Wednesday night at the North Area Athletic Complex. Golden had to win to have any realistic shot at grabbing one of two automatic qualifier spots out of the highly competitive 4A Jeffco League. “Any chance what’s so ever. We had to get this one,” Golden coach Larry Harding said of the Demons’ playoff hopes. “The ladies worked hard. They played for each other tonight.” Golden (4-1-1, 4-1-1 in 4A Jeffco League) already had a 1-goal loss to No. 1 ranked Evergreen (7-0, 6-0) and a tie against No. 5 D’Evelyn (5-0-1, 5-0-1). A loss or tie against No. 4 Wheat Ridge (6-1, 6-1) would all but sealed the Demons fate of missing the postseason. “There was so much pressure, especially with Wheat Ridge being our rival too,” Golden senior captain Devyn Schaefer said. “We
needed this.” Only one team that doesn’t finished in the top two of its conference this spring will be granted an at-large bid to the reduced postseason field this spring because of the shortened COVID season. It’s impossible that Evergreen, D’Evelyn, Wheat Ridge and Golden will all qualify for the state tournament. The loss and tie early in league play could have dashed all hopes for the Demons advancing past the regular season, but that disappointment didn’t show against Wheat Ridge. “It’s been tough because I think with those other two games (Evergreen and D’Evelyn) we could have won those too,” Golden senior Jordyn Hyland said. “This was a must-win game and we did it.” Golden had the majority of the scoring chances in the first half, but it wasn’t until the 32nd minute that the Demons took a 1-0 lead. Junior Abby Des Cognets was able to find the back of the net when the ball came to her with a straight-on shot attempt against Wheat Ridge junior goalie Ariel Martin. The Farmers got some great pressure in the opening minutes of the

second half in an attempt to get the equalizer. Senior Jessica Brummett and sophomore Sadie Powers mouth had good scoring chances in the opening 8 minutes of the second half. However, Golden junior goalie Ella Harrison was up to the task keeping the shutout in tack. Hyland changed the momentum with a perfected placed long kick in the 49th minute. “Scoring that goal to start the second half totally changed the game,” Hyland said of her goal that gave the Demons a 2-0 lead. “Hon-
estly, I didn’t think it was going in. It changed the game for the better for us.” Wheat Ridge did continue to put pressure on the Demons, but Golden was able to get the shutout victory and stay alive for the postseason. “From here on out we definitely want to keep on winning games,” Schaefer said. “It’s not time to let off the gas, but it’s time to slow down and focus on the things we need to fix.” The Demons have league games against Conifer, Littleton and Green Mountain from June 1 to June 7. The Demons must get some help to finish either first or second in the conference to grab that automatic bid. “It is tough, but we are just hoping for the best,” Hyland said. Wheat Ridge still in the mix despite the loss. The Farmers control their own destiny. If Wheat Ridge defeats D’Evelyn (June 7) and Evergreen (June 9) the Farmers will claim a top-2 spot in the conference and be headed to the postseason.
