Smiles were on the faces of ev-
ery Englewood police officer at a Walmart in Englewood on Dec. 17 for the Santa Cops event. Children were paired up with Englewood police officers for a night of shopping at Walmart. The children were nominated by Englewood Schools and police officers for the shopping extravaganza. Each child was given a Walmart
gift card to buy whatever they wanted. Police officers accompanied the children with shopping carts around the store as they shopped. Englewood’s Santa Cops event aims to strengthen the relationship between children and police. The shopping experience was provided by a Walmart grant that provides funds for the program.
At Bishop Elementary School in Englewood, things have been a bit different since January for the 211 students who attend the K-6 school. Bishop Elementary students have been spending their school days inside the old Maddox Early Childhood Education Center awaiting a new school building. Those days of waiting and staying in a building that wasn’t met for those students are soon coming to an end after winter break. Bishop Elementary is anticipating the opening of its new $19 million school building when students return from break on Jan. 8. The school will hold a ribboncutting ceremony outside the school on Jan. 7 that will include self-guided tours and refreshments from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. “I think it’s just really cool that all of these kids get to experience the transition between having our older building and coming into something new that has been planned out for us and our population. I think just having a new space, it’s going to be inviting for (students),” said Gabby Cautero, a kindergarten teacher at Bishop Elementary. The new school building will feature 16 classrooms; an art room; music room; gym; science, technology, engineering and mathematics lab; maker space; and SEE BISHOP, P9
