Ten grizzly bears from a zoo in Argentina are adjusting to their new home at Colorado’s Wild Animal Sanctuary. The bruins were flown from Argentina to Dallas then driven to Keenesburg, north of Denver, in late November.
After an adjustment period, sanctuary officials plan to move the bears to a 50-acre habitat near Springfield. Wildlife Animal Sanctuary director Pat Craig tells Colorado Public Radio that the sanctuary is the next best thing to living in the wild. The bears come from the Mendo-

za Zoological Park in the Mendoza Province near the Chilean border. The zoo was the subject of protests for housing a polar bear that died in 2016. Craig says the grizzlies mostly lived in cages and concrete surfaces. He says one was kept in a concrete pit for almost 19 years because he once escaped.

The Elizabeth Five Percent Growth Committee submitted documentation to Elizabeth Town Clerk Michelle Oeser on Nov. 18, seeking approval to begin a petition process to get a five percent growth cap in Elizabeth on the ballot. The committee cited Lakewood’s recent initiative, which was approved in July, which capped growth at 1% annually. However, more fine-tuning is required, as Oeser returned the documents on grounds that they failed to be in petition form. The purpose and intent outlined in the documents are to “establish a building permit management system that limits residential growth in the Town of Elizabeth to no greater than five (5) percent per annum, which will assure the preservation of its unique environment and exceptional quality of life.
More than 90% of Elbert County residents commute outside the county for work.
