This year’s Denver Restaurant Week has shifted to take place in the spring, VISIT DENVER announced in a news release. The 2021 dates are April 23-May 2. Traditionally, the 10-day showcase of Denver’s culinary scene takes place in February, which is typically a slow time of the year for the industry. This year, however, because COVID-19 restrictions — such as social distancing guidelines that limit seating — are still in place, the warmer weather in spring may allow restaurants to maximize patio and outdoor seating. This year’s spring Denver Restaurant Week also encourages takeout and delivery. “Above anything else, we want to ensure we are focusing on advocacy for our restaurant partners, while keeping the health and safety of the community top of mind,” said Richard Scharf, president and CEO of VISIT DENVER, in a news release. “We have an excellent culinary scene that is having a tough time right now through no fault of its own, so we wanted to build a new spring program that still offers as many to-go options as ever, while increasing access to safe dine-in options as well.” As usual, participating restaurants

Airbnb trying to limit parties tied to Fourth Guests must have positive reviews to book one-night stays in Denver that weekend BY DAVID SACHS DENVERITE
Airbnb is taking steps that, according to the company, will prevent parties at rental properties that use the app. Representatives with the company, which helps people rent their homes online, said travel is on the rise, but they recognize that the pandemic is not over and are heeding advice from health experts who are still warning against large, indoor gatherings. Denver has 1,957 licensed shortterm rental properties, according to the city’s business licensing center, which is 24% fewer rental homes than it had when the pandemic began. Still, licenses are up 4% since the beginning of January. “I think the fact of the matter is large gatherings remain a potential public health issue,” said Ben Breit, a spokesperson for Airbnb. “And … we still have an indefinite party ban in effect at all our listings, both in the U.S., in Denver and throughout the world.” Guests “without a history of positive reviews” won’t be able to book
one-night stays in Denver over Independence Day weekend, the new rules state. One-night bookings correlate with parties, Breit said, citing proprietary data from the publicly traded company. Airbnb generally considers accounts with an average of four stars or more to be positive, Breit said. But the new rule will affect people with new accounts, which could be opened by those who previously earned bad reviews or who are simply new to the platform, he said. “We’re not saying they’re bad people,” Breit said. “Most of them are great people and will hopefully use the platform for years to come, but they just haven’t kind of earned that trust yet.” The company made similar rules for Halloween and New Year’s Eve. Airbnb homes in Denver have been the site of parties and shootings, but most complaints lobbed at the city are for illegal shortterm rentals, said Eric Escudero, a spokesperson for the Denver Department of Excise and Licenses. “What we often found is that the short-term rentals that are problems for the neighborhoods — the noise, trash, parties, parking issues that come along with it — are often associated with unlicensed rentals,” Escudero said. “When they’re licensed, they’re usually more responsible renters.” A law enacted by Denver City Council forced companies like Airbnb and VRBO to verify the licenses

of their clients starting Feb. 1. Before then, the city doled out fines of $1,000 for each short-term rental listed without a license. But there have been zero violations since the law went into effect, Escudero said. Wait a minute. Does the new law create a loophole for anyone who books multiple nights? Since the rule only applies to those who book a single night, you might be wondering if the company is giving preference to people who spend more money with them by booking two nights. The answer is yes, to an extent. But Breit said rentals for multiple nights don’t lead to parties or “destructive behavior” as often as onenight stays. And he said the company is adding “defenses” for two- and three-night stays. For example, if

someone under the age of 25 — Airbnb must verify your age before you can become a member — lacks a history of positive reviews and tries to rent a whole house in the city or in the “area,” they would be denied. Breit declined to provide the radius that applies to the location-based restrictions because he said people could use the information to circumvent the rule. “We’re not perfect. We’re not infallible. But we feel it’s a pretty comprehensive strategy,” he said. Vrbo, another popular short-term rental app in Denver, did not return our request for comment. Oftentimes, art can be a connector between science and nature. “Art can talk to people in a lot of ways that data cannot,” said Lisa Eldred, director of exhibitions and head curator of art at the Denver Botanic Gardens. “Art helps tell the stories of our relationship with nature.” The science part comes in with the living plants and botanical illustrations. The Denver Botanic Gardens is hosting a feature exhibition called Salvador Dalí: Gardens of the Mind, which will run April 10-Aug. 22. It is included with general admission to the gardens. Part of the botanic gardens’ mission is to give people new ways to connect with plants, said Jen Tobias, who serves the Denver Botanic Gardens as the assistant director of exhibitions of art and collections and as assistant curator of art. “This show is so playful. Some of the works have humorous qualities, but they’re also beautiful and charming,” Tobias said. “It showcases some traditional botanical illustrations with surrealist spins.”

The Dalí exhibit boasts nearly 40 works on loan from The Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. It features two suites — FlorDalí and Surrealist Flowers, which are two “rarely seen series of fanciful color lithographs of flowers and fruits,” states a news release. Surrealism has a “purposefully irrational quality to explore dreams and such things,” said To-
bias. This exhibit offers a “different way of thinking about the natural world.” The Dalí exhibit coincides with a few other exhibits that are upcoming this spring and summer — also located inside the gardens’ recentlyopened Freyer-Newman Center galleries — that speak to the intersections of art and science. The other exhibits are:
• Radiant Season: Paintings by Kevin Sloan, who is a “Denver-based painter whose work focuses on the relationship between the natural world and human-made objects and environments,” states the gardens’ website. Radiant Season runs March 13 through July 11. • Golden Opportunity: Botanical Illustration, which features illustrations of yellow plants created by students and faculty of Denver Botanic Gardens’ School of Botanical Art & Illustration. This exhibit will be on display May 29 through Aug. 15. • Of Sky and Ground: Yoshitomo Saito, whose “cast bronze works capture and celebrate the elegant lines and subtle details of nature,” states the gardens’ website. Of Sky and Ground runs from July 24 through Nov. 28. These are in addition to the 24 acres of the gardens where people can explore the “gorgeousness” of living plants, Tobias said. A visit to the Denver Botanic Gardens truly can provide a multidisciplinary and multisensory experience, Eldred added. With the heightened stress people are experiencing from the pandemic, Eldred hopes that the gardens can serve as a respite and that people can leave the art exhibits — including Salvador Dalí: Gardens of the Mind — feeling restored and rejuvenated. “And with a notion of curiosity that serves as a catalyst for continued exploration,” Eldred said.

Finding cancer care during COVID

Messaging to stay home and avoid medical facilities went too far, causing fear, panic and anxiety, she said. When it comes to general health care, family-care physicians said the pandemic was a tough year. Because general care is sometimes considered non-emergent, many patients figured 2020 was a good time to take the year off from seeing the family doctor. “When all of this started, the messaging was to delay medical care if it could be delayed,” said Dr. Alison Shmerling, who practices family medicine for UCHealth in Westminster. Shmerling said she is seeing cases where screening orders for preventive testing, including mammograms and colonoscopies, that she recommended a year ago have expired. For older patients, the less active lifestyle caused by stay-athome orders has created complications in managing weight, blood pressure and keeping diabetes in check. 2020 left backlog of issues With family medicine considered the first line of defense in many cases, Dr. Mihir Patel, a primarycare doctor in Castle Rock, said 2020 has caused a backlog of issues, including cancer diagnosis, depression, obesity and issues related to heart health such as cholesterol, blood pressure and exercise. “In general, not everyone is
compliant with screenings, but that was elevated in COVID,” he said. “Anything we can catch in the early stages and start treating means we can do the work to stop it.” Dr. Amanda Babcock, family medicine provider at UCHealth Primary Care-Arvada West, said she has seen a trend of patients requesting prescription refills without coming in for annual exams. “We provide that general care
where we are able to get the whole picture,” Babcock said. “You might think something that is happening is normal and is no big deal. However, when you see (your general-care doctor), we might see something and order tests to make sure it is nothing.” Dr. Lisa Wynn, an OB/GYN at UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital, said she is seeing signs of distress from 2020 through blood
work. Patients had depression and heightened stress, and test results are showing that. Liver function in blood work is worrisome, Wynn said, as it is clear more women turned to alcohol to cope with the stressors of the pandemic. “In 2019 all these tests were normal,” she said. “Now, in 2021, there are a lot of red flags with alcohol, SEE CARE, P9

A century ago wasn’t just any old time
T
hings were different one hundred years ago. For example, no one wore flip-flops to the airport. However, there were no flip-flops and few airports. That makes a difference. They had a presi- QUIET dential inauguraDESPERATION tion in 1921 too, but not like ours, that’s for sure. The television ratings were terrible. In fact, not a single person watched it on TV. A nickel if you can tell me who was sworn in. Craig Marshall Hint: He didn’t Smith make it through his term. His pump quit on August 2, 1923. In 1921, no one on Earth had heard of the Beatles. Imagine that. Or In-N-Out. But in September of that year, the first White Castle hamburger restaurant opened in Wichita, Kansas.
“The Kid,” starring Charlie Chaplin and Jackie Coogan, was the second highest-grossing film of the year. Lana Turner was born on February 8 in Wallace, Idaho, a mining town that was known in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth for its “permissive approach” to vice. Wallace’s current population is less than 800. The Spanish flu had just ended the year before. It infected about one-third of the world’s population. Until the 1920s started to “roar,” live and recorded music options were limited. It would have been a bad time to be a teenager. But help was on the way. Fiszel Czyz was born on March 28, 1921, in Motal, Poland. His brother Lejzor was born in 1917. The Czyz family moved to New York then to Chicago. Fiszel and Lejzor changed their names to Phil and Leonard Chess and co-founded Chess Records in 1938. Chess specialized in rhythm and blues as well as jazz and early
rock ‘n’ roll. Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Dale Hawkins, Howlin’ Wolf, the Flamingos, Bo Diddley, Sonny Boy Williamson and John Lee Hooker all recorded for Chess. But “Suzie Q” (Dale Hawkins) was a long way off in 1921. “The Kid,” like all films released in 1921, was silent. The first feature-length “talkie” wasn’t released until October 6, 1927. However, by 1931 extraordinary advances had been made in the film industry. That was the year “Frankenstein” was released; a 100% film on Rotten Tomatoes in 2021. Major League Baseball was being played in 1921, just as it will be again soon. The 1921 season ended when New York Giants beat the New York Yankees in Game 8 of the World Series. That year, Babe Ruth led MLB with 59 home runs. Bob Meusel — remember him? — was second on the list with 24. Ironically, the Baby Ruth candy bar was introduced in 1921. But it
was not named after the baseball player. It was named after President Grover Cleveland’s daughter. Famous people born in 1921: John Glenn, Rodney Dangerfield, Nancy Reagan, Sugar Ray Robinson and Steve Allen, the first host of “The Tonight Show.” One hundred years seems like a mighty long time, doesn’t it? Maybe it’s not. “The Maltese Falcon” (movie) is 80 years old. “Dark Side of the Moon” is 48. The final original “Peanuts” comic strip was published 21 years ago. How is that possible? Albert Einstein said, “The only reason for time is so that everything doesn’t happen at once.” That makes (almost) perfect sense to me. The president’s name? Warren Gamaliel Harding. Listening to the whispers of success
T
his past week I was reminded of something as I once again experienced the intimacy, joy and power found in a whisper. Although it is just my wife and I who live in our home now, for some reason I paid parWINNING ticular attention to how we were WORDS saying goodnight to one another. I noticed that our voices were low as we whispered softly, “Goodnight, I love you.” This caused me to think about how we wake up together as well, Michael Norton another whisper and soft greeting of good morning. No one else can hear us. Even if we raised our voices, there is no one in the house that could possibly hear what we say. Yet we whisper. It’s not because we are worried about anyone else hearing us, the whisper just seems to intimately connect us as we begin and end each day. When it comes to effective communication skills, we know that

there are several things that we can do to help people hear what we are saying. We can speak faster, which will have some people paying a little closer attention as they try and keep up. We can speak louder, and that sometimes helps bring others back to a conversation if they have drifted off for a moment. Or we can speak quietly, even whispering, which can help those we are trying to reach lean in more to hear what we are trying to say. In addition to the shared intimacy that comes with whispering, there could also be incredible joy. It’s like when we have a really good secret to share with someone and we know that when we whisper it in their ear, we will see the joy shine upon their face. Or when someone shares something very important, and they want to make sure that no one else can hear them, but they trust us with whatever important or sensitive information they need us to know, it brings us profound joy knowing how much we are trusted. Becoming loud or shouting seems to be the go-to for some of us when we are trying to exert

power or make a point. There are some of us who do believe that the only way we can get anyone to listen is by amplifying our voice, both in volume and tonality. Those we are attempting to reach may have no other option as they listen to the shouts, however, that does not mean that they heard what was being said. When shouting and screaming cause others to shut down, become defensive, or simply walk away, the message goes unheard no matter how loud we become. Some of the most respected leaders learned how to garner respect because of their ability to stay calm and focused when delivering a message or when they tried to influence, inspire and lead those around them. As a matter of fact, they learned the power that comes from whispering. And that power comes because the leader is trying to transfer a feeling by intimately whispering their most sincere words of hope and encouragement. People who follow such leadership and whispered conversations tend to feel happiness and joy based on the flow and direction of the message.

It is a reality check for getting diet and healthy habits back on track.” Wynn joked that her entire family, including her dog, gained weight during the pandemic, noting that no one should feel ashamed or avoid a doctor just because everything is not perfect. “We all handled our health-care decisions differently,” she said. “When you think zombies are going to be at your door tomorrow, you take the attitude of eating or doing whatever you want today. f you’ve put on a few pounds during the pandemic, you’re not alone. And if you’ve only put on a few — consider yourself lucky. A study by the American Psychological Association (APA) conducted at the end of February found that 61% of American adults experienced undesired weight gain or loss since the pandemic began. More than 40% of those responding to the poll experienced weight gain they never intended. That 40% gained an average of 29 pounds. Median weight gain was 15 pounds. And 10% of respondents said they gained more than 50 pounds — a staggering number in one year’s time. So, here we are. Spring is springing, vaccinations are happening, the weather is warming up and you want to lose some of those pandemic pounds. But where do you begin? In Colorado there’s no shortage of ways to keep fit, but even in a state consistently ranking near the top in physical well-being of its residents, taking that first step along the path to fitness can be daunting. Allison Westfahl has been a fitness pro for almost 20 years. Currently, she’s the general manager for Tru Fusion, a fitness studio that brings all the boutique disciplines — yoga,

cycling, barre, pilates, boot camp, boxing, TRX, meditation and more — together under one roof, and all in classes — no independent fitness floor. They started up last fall, a rough time to open a business, Westfahl said, but a time when it was much needed. “It became clear to us that it was more important than ever, during a pandemic, for people to have a place where they can take care of themselves physically, emotionally and mentally,” she said. “So, we opened in September to 25% restrictions, and our classes were full with a waitlist by the end of the first month.” She said they’re still under size restrictions to keep everyone distanced and safe. A class that in a pre-pandemic world would have 75 participants, right now only accommodates around 23. Group dynamic helps Westfahl thinks the group dynamic that attendees get in a class, along with instructors who are involved in their clients’ success, can help people stay accountable in their fitness quest. But for people just getting back into the groove, she thinks being kind to your body and moving forward slowly is key. “I’m hearing and seeing a lot of people just beating themselves up

over putting on weight or not working out for the past year like they usually do — I see a lot of people scolding themselves for that — so, my biggest piece of advice would be to approach whatever happened over the past year with your fitness routine with grace and forgiveness,” she said. “None of us probably reached any fitness records over the past year, so just let that be in the rear-view mirror and continue to move forward.” Just getting started is a common refrain among those in the know. Westfahl also offers up this bit of wisdom, no matter the activity you start with. “Make sure it’s something that you love,” she says. “When it comes to fitness and wellness, there’s so many options out there — don’t do something that you hate. Find some-

thing that you love and you’re going to be much more likely to stick with it.” Meaghan Doherty has been doing fitness for 25 years, and teaching boot camps for the last six. She’s been able to ride the pandemic wave by moving her classes outdoors when necessary, doing online instruction when she had to, and being fortunate enough to teach in a facility she describes as the size of four warehouses. She’s hoping that as COVID numbers get better, people will begin to feel better about getting back into the gym. She typically teaches early mornings, with class times that start between 5-8 a.m. plus a noon class for those late risers. Her clients, she says, run the gamut in SEE FITNESS, P15

DPS aims to get kids vaccinated STAFF REPORT
Denver Public Schools is partnering with Denver Health and Children’s Hospital Colorado to assist all eligible DPS students who would like to have a COVID-19 vaccination. Youth aged 16 and older in Colorado are now eligible to receive the vaccine. DPS is not requiring students to take the vaccine, so a student’s enrollment will not be impacted whether they receive the vaccine. “We know this is an individual and personal choice for all students, staff and community members,” states district’s website. However, “we hope that a large number of our staff and students will choose to take the vaccine in order to provide maximum protection for our staff and student communities, and we want to provide resources to help you make an informed decision on whether to participate in vaccination.” To go through Denver Health, eligible students and their families may contact DPS’ SchoolBased Health Centers at 303-602-
8958 to get connected to a vaccine appointment. Parental consent either in person or with a current signed consent to treat form on file in the Denver Health system is required for students ages 16 and 17. For Children’s Hospital Colorado, eligible students ages 16 and older and their families may register for vaccine appointments using the Children’s Hospital Colorado portal. Children’s Hospital Colorado will then contact individuals directly to schedule appointments. Appointment invitations expire after 72 hours. Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian present to sign a physical consent form at both first and second dose appointments. Those with additional questions about COVID-19 vaccine appointments may call the Children’s Hospital Colorado’s COVID-19 vaccine hotline at 720-777-8889. age from 22 to 71, and she modifies routines for everyone. Her advice for people is to get a set of weights — nothing heavy, just something that will activate your muscles. A daily walk is also something she thinks will benefit those trying to get back in the swing of things — even 10 minutes per day. “Just start — is my advice,” she says. “I don’t care if you go for a walk, ride a spin bike or go to the park to play Frisbee — just get yourself moving and start. Get those endorphins going and I guarantee you will do more and more every day.” Frustration with weight Doherty said in her experience, weight gain can give people a sense of frustration and that can lead to procrastination. She also wants people to be realistic with their expectations about dropping those pounds, because they typically go on a lot faster than they come off. And in her opinion, adding some weights to your cardio routine will help your body burn fat more quickly than cardio alone.
Doherty, also an M.D., is happy to offer nutrition information to her clients if they ask. She thinks every diet works — the question is, which diet works for you? “There are so many (diet) options out there. You just have to figure out what works for your daily lifestyle, and what you can actually stick with,” she says. Leslie Conzemius is a registered nurse and integrative health coach who co-organized the popular Yoga in the Park at Denver’s City Park. She says Yoga in the Park began to promote yoga in nature, build community and have yoga be accessible to all. Before COVID, it was always held outside. But with the pandemic, it detoured into an online Zoom model. Conzemius, a former professional dancer and choreographer, said her hobbies and passions have always focused on dance and movement, so yoga was a natural progression. She’s been teaching yoga since 2016. “I love spreading the benefits of yoga,” she says. “Not only what it gives you in that hour (of practicing) but also what it brings to the rest of your daily life.” Stress reduction, how to breathe
and even just being kinder to yourself and bringing gratitude to daily life are some of the benefits she thinks yoga can offer. Return to park possible Conzemius says this spring, Yoga in the Park is looking into the permitting process to bring yoga back to the park, while making sure it’s done safely. But she’s happy to pass along tips for anyone who’s struggled during the pandemic and wants to make a fresh fitness start. “I really love the science of behavior change, and that’s what I focus on with my clients,” she says. “Because we can know that we need to exercise, and have all of the knowledge, but it doesn’t mean we’re doing it.” She has three pieces of advice for people looking to make a change for the better in their health. She agrees with Westfahl that finding something you love doing is paramount. “There are so many different things you can do, and so many ways to move your body — with people, alone, in classes, over Zoom, hopefully soon in person, sports, walking — and all of them are good,” she says. “And for any length of time is good.” Conzemius’ second piece of advice is: “Everything counts.” She says 150 minutes of exercise
per week is the standard, but she would put those rules aside for people just starting out or starting over. “Five minutes of stretching or a 20-minute walk — it (getting started) doesn’t have to mean an hour in the gym,” she says. “A lot of little moments can add up. Even things like playing with your kids, mopping the floor or gardening can be really beneficial for our bodies.” Her third piece of advice is to celebrate. “Celebrate your successes. People often focus on what they didn’t do, as opposed to what they did do,” she says. “Be very intentional about celebrating your wins, however small. Pat yourself on the back. Wink at yourself in the mirror. Tell somebody what you did, because then your brain will remember it and get that signal and want to do it again, and it builds motivation.” She said it’s important to talk to yourself the way you would talk to a friend — with encouragement and support — not unhealthy criticism. It’s clear from chatting with these three local fitness pros that being kind to yourself and starting slow, but starting soon, will help you ease back into pre-pandemic shape, or maybe even better.
