Denver public health officials on June 1 retired capacity limits for large outdoor events, including for two of the city’s most popular venues: Coors Field and Red Rocks. “These venues now have no capacity limits, distancing requirements or other restrictions,” the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment said. The Colorado Rockies said on June 2 that they will allow fullcapacity crowds of 50,000 beginning on June 28. They’re calling that date “Opening Day 2.0.” A new public health order that takes effect runs through July 1 also removes regulations for indoor events up to 1,999 people. Indoor events of 2,000 or more still require approval from DDPHE. The changes in Denver come after the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment on Monday dropped restrictions for large indoor gatherings. Denver Metro Chamber chief stepping down Kelly Brough will end 12-year tenure at helm of organization on Sept. 1 BY DENNIS HUSPENI DENVER GAZETTE
Kelly Brough, the longtime head of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, announced June 2 that she’s leaving the position after 12 years. President and CEO Brough oversaw the 3,000-member organization through the Great Recession recovery, and is in the midst of another caused by the COVID-19 pandemic that shut down huge swaths of the economy in 2020. “Truth be told, I have shared and implemented every idea (bad and good) I’ve had, and it’s time for somebody who can see challenges and opportunities with fresh eyes to lead the work,” Brough said in a statement. Brough said she notified the executive committee of the chamber’s board in the previous week and has agreed to stay on through Sept. 1.

In Brough’s time at the chamber, its revenue doubled ($17 million in operations, $30 million in assets). She led initiatives on race and gender equity in 2018 focusing on jobs, affordable housing and entrepreneurship. She led numerous ballot efforts raising more than $40 million (open primaries, higher education, transportation, health care policy, energy production, tax policy
and growth) and advocated for business-friendly legislation. “I’ve worked with Kelly since I was on city council and she was a member of the Hickenlooper administration,” Mayor Michael B. Hancock said via email. “We’ve tackled some of our region’s biggest issues together over that time. I look forward to seeing what challenge she takes on next

to continue making a real and lasting difference.” She worked for the City of Denver from 2003-09, including serving as then-Mayor John Hickenlooper’s chief of staff. Downtown Denver Partnership’s President and CEO Tami Door, Brough’s longtime friend, said “it has been a true benefit to work with someone who cares deeply about our community, as Kelly does, and is as committed to getting results. “She is definitely a collaborative leader focused primarily on ensuring the best possible outcome,” Door said in an interview on June 2. “She does that through consensus building. She develops and maintains relationships and truly listens to wide array of viewpoints.” While Brough didn’t elaborate on next steps for her, she alluded to areas that have been important to her in recent years: housing and education. “These issues are fundamental to helping families succeed,” she said in the statement. “We have such serious challenges in these areas, so I am drawn to them.” Brough thanked all the
businesses and economic development-centered organizations she’s worked with since 2009. One of the hallmarks of her leadership was cooperation with other chambers, the state’s Office of Economic Development and International Trade and the Downtown Denver Partnership. That effort also included government officials, both locally and up through U.S. legislators from Colorado. “I started at the Chamber in 2009 with the desire to work for an organization that aligned with my personal belief that there is nothing more powerful at advancing opportunities for families than a really good job,” Brough said in the statement. “That belief aligned perfectly with the work of the Chamber and its affiliates. Youth mental health services in crisis As youth suicide attempts rise, mental health experts declare state of emergency BY THELMA GRIMES TGRIMES@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
With suicide attempts on the rise, and emergency rooms statewide filling up with psychiatric patients, Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHC) declared a state of emergency last week. During a special round-table discussion on May 25, health experts said they are seeing dramatic increases in young patients suffering from depression, anxiety, and feelings of isolation and social disconnectedness. Participants in the panel agreed hospital beds are filling up, resources are running low and more help from the county, state and federal levels are needed. According to statistics provided in the hour-long discussion, the leading cause of death for children and young adults, starting at age 10, is suicide in Colorado. According to 2021 data from Mental Health America, Colorado ranks 42nd in youth mental health services. CHC has hospitals and services throughout the Denver metro area, including locations in Arapahoe, Jefferson, Douglas, Denver and Adams counties. At the main regional campus

Emergency visits went up 90% in April compared to the same normal time in 2019. In declaring a pediatric mental health state of emergency, CEO Jena Hausmann said CHC has worked more than decade to expand facilities, programs, and beds to serve mental/behavioral health issues for children and teenagers. However, she noted, it is not enough with the continual increase in patients starting in 2020 and continuing at an even faster pace in 2021. “Now we are seeing our pediatric

emergency departments and in-patient pediatric units overrun with kids attempting suicide and suffering from other major mental-health illness,” Hausmann said. “The current system is unsustainable, and it is hurting our children. Our children need us to rally together.” Dr. Janna Glover, CHC director of psychology training, said even though society is seeing COVID issues improve, the impacts on children and teenagers are going to continue. “Kids have dealt with chronic stress in the past year that a has interrupted their development and education,” she said. “Now, kids are asked to get back to life again and they feel completely unprepared. They are burnt out and they feel so behind that they do not know how to catch up. They feel a sense of hopelessness.” Glover said hopelessness is the top predictor of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Through tears, David Brumbaugh, the CHC chief medical officer, said some of the cases hit too close to home. Brumbaugh said he had a ninth-grade patient who attempted suicide after failing to make the baseball team. Brum-
baugh said his own son is in ninth grade and plays baseball. Brumbaugh said in his 20 years of treating pediatric patients, he has never seen such a high demand for mental health services. The stress on the system started about 15 months ago, Brumbaugh said, and the last three to four months have been even worse. “Our kids have run out of resilience,” he said. “We are seeing kids who were largely functional and now the floor is falling out. They are attempting suicide.” Patricia Givens, the chief nursing officer for CHC, said, “We are tapped out in all areas. We cannot build enough beds to keep pace with demand.” Givens said hospitals are seeing children as young as 8 years old attempting suicide. CHC experts said a lot of the problems in are rural communities where training in schools and services are lacking. Experts said if teachers, counselors and staff receive more training, they can intervene and get help for children and teens before they get into a crisis mode. SEE CRISIS, P7

A numeral, a letter, and unsure what’s better
W
hat’s 5G? What happened to 4G? Is 5G better than 4G? Is 6G next? Will the commercials for 6G be better than the commercials for 5G? The commercials QUIET for 5G give me a DESPERATION headache. Especially the ones that feature “Lily,” who stands behind a podium now because of internet trolling. By the end of the commercials I still don’t know what 5G is. Craig Marshall Someone in marSmith keting assumes we all keep up with this stuff. A year ago I wrote a column about new technologies that I don’t need. I don’t need any more of them. My internet is fast enough. My car doesn’t have a screen on the dash. My car doesn’t have cameras. It doesn’t drive itself, park itself, wash itself, or change
colors. An Italian automaker is experimenting with cars that can change colors like chameleons. You drive a red one today and a blue one tomorrow. At midnight it’s purple. The Japanese are a step ahead. They’re working on “mood” cars. Cars that will change colors according to the driver’s mood. You’ll be able to tell how the woman in the car next to you is feeling because her car will tell you. Does anyone draw with a pencil anymore? I draw with a 2B. It’s softer than a 2H. I never draw with a 4H. I know someone in 4H, but it has nothing to do with pencils. Lily probably makes 5K every time one of her 5G commercials is shown. It would take no time at all to find out what 5G is. But I’m stubborn. But there are a few technologies that amaze me. I have self-published two novels and a compilation of short stories this year.
Which reminds me of something Nietzsche said: “Every time I climb I am followed by a dog named Ego.” Once these books are written, proofed, and formatted, the files are forwarded to a print-ondemand company. Books are then printed as they are ordered. Right now. Self-publishing does have its drawbacks. Bookstores won’t carry the books and newspapers won’t review them. Additionally, they’re the kids at the card table on Thanksgiving: looked down on. It would be nice to have a publisher. Have someone else pick up the checks. But that someone else would want me to make changes I wouldn’t want to make, design the cover, make me go on promotional tours, sign autographs and talk about Faulkner at cocktail parties. Self-publishing accomplishes all I want. Sure, it would be nice to have big house behind one of my
books, but I don’t. There’s a film, “Sideways,” about a couple of men who have a dirty weekend in California’s wine country before one of them, Jack, gets married. His friend Miles is an author who spends the film sweating out his editor’s ability to have his book published. Ultimately, the book is rejected. Miles’s reaction is to drink from a spit bucket in a winery’s tasting room. I will never drink from a spit bucket. Or jump off a roof or stick my head in an oven because my book was rejected. There was a time when I thought I had it all. A bicycle, a baseball glove and a transistor radio. Each one gave me limitless pleasures. Those were the days, Mary Hopkin. What’s 5G? Rehearsing success leads to success
W
hen we anticipate the future, do we see ourselves winning or succeeding? Or do we look into our future and see only losses or failure ahead? WINNING Some could see this as a simple WORDS difference between optimism and pessimism. However, it is more than that too. When we dream, we don’t typically dream of the fish we almost caught, the deal we almost won, Michael Norton or the meal we almost prepared. No, typically in our dreams we catch the fish, and it is bigger than we expected; we close the deal and it’s worth more in commission than any previous deal we had sold; and the dinner that we cooked was nothing short of culinary perfection, worthy of qualifying for a spot on a famous cooking show. Over the course of life, I have yet to find the person who shared a dream where they saw themselves shanking a drive on the

golf course, had a big outdoor event like a wedding getting rained out or canceled, or the company they were about to start becoming an immediate and utter failure. When those do occur, those are nightmares, not dreams. All visions of success are not limited to dreams. As a matter of fact, many people who have achieved their goals in life didn’t passively wait for success to happen to them, they went ahead and made success happen. And the way they contributed to their success was planning, preparing, and rehearsing ahead of time. A friend of mine was always swinging a golf club. He was rehearsing for success. Now I play a little golf too, or rather I attempt to play golf. And I have also made some imaginary golf swings. However, I am doing it just to stretch, not with the full intention of seeing the club strike the ball, the trajectory, and the soft landing. No, I am not rehearsing for success the way that my friend does, and it shows each time we play. Have you ever seen a pianist, guitarist, drummer, or other musician practicing without their instrument? Their eyes are usually closed as they play, but in their head, they see their hands moving across the keys or strings and hear the awesome and beautiful sounds that they are creating. They too are rehearsing for success. Will we always succeed or win by merely envisioning ourselves doing so? No, we will not. Will we increase our likelihood of suc-

CHC officials said hospital beds once being used to treat patients with physical injuries and illnesses are being converted into beds for patients presenting with behavioral health issues. Besides treating patients who have attempted suicide, hospitals are seeing an increase in patients suffering from eating disorders and presenting with symptoms associated with substance abuse. Many of the health experts said the situation is going to require partnerships with county governments, health departments, school districts and state and federal agencies. Heidi Baskfield, CHC vice president of population health and advocacy, said it is going to require more funding. It is going to require more work to reach children or teens in crisis before they attempt suicide and put pressure on the healthcare system, she said. Mike DiStefano, chief medical officer in Colorado Springs, said a major focus must be placed on prevention, where outpatient services intercept children in crisis long before they attempt suicide. Preventive services are also in crisis. Over the last few years, Baskfield said 47 facilities across the state closed. These are facilities

that have traditionally provided mental health care to children and teenagers. “At a time when we are seeing volumes increase, severity increase and overall need, the system that is meant to be in place to serve these kids not only does not exist but those attempting to do this work are underwater and overwhelmed,” Baskfield said. While not present during the round-table discussion, Douglas County Commissioner Lora Thomas said the county wants to be the example other communities across the state can follow. In 2017, Douglas County started investing more than $1 million per year into mental-health services, creating a Community Response Team. In 2019, the county created the Youth Community Response Team after more than 40% of the calls for help were for residents 19 and younger. Thomas said the partnerships health experts are calling for can work statewide and the CRT program is proof. Douglas County suicide rates are decreasing and partnerships with local organizations, especially the Douglas County School District, have gone up, she said. “We want to take the success we have had here statewide,” she said. “For us, the good news is we are ready to handle the crisis with our youth.”

It will feature a virtual parade — which will be broadcasted at 9:30 a.m. on June 27 on Denver7’s and The Center’s social media channels — a virtual marketplace, a 5K and Pride Hubs. Those who wish to participate in the 5K can do so in their own neighborhood by registering to participate virtually, or they can participate in-person at Cheesman Park. Both the virtual and in-person 5K will take place on June 26. Micro-events — being called Pride Hubs — will take place at a variety of venues throughout the city. Just a few examples include a Saturday night pool party a with a deejay at the Jewish Community Center, family-friendly activities at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and a mini festival in The Center’s parking lot featuring food trucks, exhibitors and rooftop entertainment. Admission to most Pride Hubs events are free, but there will be capacity limits. Some require preregistration and some venues will be using a ticketing system to manage attendance. Denver PrideFest’s website has links to each Pride Hub for people to register for the events. “Pride events are an important opportunity for community members to come together and speak out on issues that are important to the LGBTQ+ community. Pride is also an opportunity to celebrate one’s identity without fear or shame,” Fuller said. “I’m so proud of our PrideFest committee members and staff who have been so creative in finding safe ways to celebrate pride.”
There are many Pride events taking place throughout the metro area in June. Here are a couple suggestions. Loud & Proud: A Celebration of Pride Bands from Coast to Coast This live-stream concert will feature 13 LGBTQIA+ bands part of the international Pride Bands Alliance, including Colorado’s own Mile High Freedom Bands — MHFB Winds, MHFB Swing and MHFB Corps & Guard. Performances for Loud & Proud will range in musical genres including pop, symphonic, classical, modern, soundtrack and more. Loud & Proud will be broadcasted twice on June 26. In mountain time, the times are 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. It is free to live-stream view the concert, but donations are appreciated. All proceeds will be split evenly among the 13 bands to support their missions of building pride and inclusivity through music. Loud & Proud is being coordinated by the San Francisco Lesbian/ Gay Freedom Band.
