GCS third graders’ anti-bullying message goes from paper to print BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

It’s not every day that Georgetown Community School’s third graders get to wear a T-shirt they helped design. Just on Thursdays. In October, the school hosted an

anti-bullying poster contest and Lorray Singmaster’s third grade class submitted a group entry. At the time, the class had eight students and Singmaster thought it would be a good idea to incorporate elements of a stop sign into the design. So, the class picked out large red paper, traced their hands on separate paper, cut them out, and gave them unique designs. Then they used their hands to frame a stop sign with the words “Stop Bullying” SEE T-SHIRTS, P15

Idaho Springs has named Nate Buseck of the Cheyenne, Wyoming Police Department as its next chief of police. He replaces Chris Malanka, who has been chief for more than five years and is retiring on March 1. “(My family and I) are thrilled to be able to get into the mountains and be part of such a cool, little community,” Buseck said Thursday. “We look at it as another chapter for us.” Buseck will take over as chief starting April 5, the city announced on Feb. 17. ISPD’s second-in-command Lt. Mark Hanschmidt will serve as interim chief in the intervening month. Buseck is a captain and secondin-command in Cheyenne, where he has served for 21 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in criminology from the University of New Mexico and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He said that he plans to be in Idaho Springs for eight to 10 years before retiring. On Thursday, Buseck described how his initial step as chief will be to listen to residents, businesses and city staff about their concerns and ideas. He said he’d be open to a virtual town hall meeting and explained that, while he has several ideas, he wants to adapt them to betSEE BUSECK, P7
