The trail can be accessed at several points along the way including a trailhead on Third Street in Monument close to dining, shopping and even a bicycle repair shop. Other trailheads are located at Baptist Road, North Gate Road, Ice Lake at the Air Force Academy and two access points at Woodmen Road. Cyclists must wear helmets and trail users are not allowed to leave the trail where it passes through the Air Force Academy. The New Santa Fe Trail is an integral part of both the southern route of the American Discovery Trail, which runs from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and the Front Range Trail, a Colorado Parks and Wildlife trail that when completed will run from New Mexico to Wyoming. In fact, the combined New Santa Fe Trail, Pikes Peak Greenway and Fountain Creek Trail represent the longest completed section of the ADT in Colorado. Other other nearby trails to the south include the Chamberlain Trail, the Crews Gulch Trail, Fox Run Trail, Jackson Creek Trail, Jimmy Camp Creek Trail, La Foret Trail, Palmer Divide Trail, Rock Island Trail, Sand Creek Trail and the Midland and Ute Pass Trails that lead up into Teller County. Some of the trails to the north of the New Santa Fe Trail are still in the planning stages but completed sections include the Plum Creek Trail and the Chatfield Trails system, which are also sections of the American Discovery Trail. The northern and southern sections of the ADT meet in Denver. Continuing west, the ADT uses portions of the Continental Divide Trail, a more than 3,000-mile trail that runs through the Rockies from Canada to Mexico, and the Colorado Trail, a 500-mile trail from Denver to Durango. The Academy campus is open to visitors from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The Visitor Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. A one-third-mile paved nature trail east of the facility allows visitors to walk to the Cadet Chapel. A movie about cadets highlighting the Academy experience is shown throughout the day in a 250-seat theater. The exhibit area features displays on history and cadet life with specially designed exhibits to explain the academy's four “pillars of excellence.” These refer to the four areas of the cadet training program: character development and academic, athletic, and military training. The 5,652-squarefoot exhibit area includes video and static displays, a hometown map, and a historical exhibit featuring information on Academy history, current and former superintendents and other significant features of the Academy’s history. There are 17 guest rooms in the castle, as well as four meeting rooms and two dining rooms. This house was his dream home and is near the northwest foothills north of the Garden of the Gods Park. After building a large carriage house, where the family lived for a time, Palmer and his wife Mary (Queen) Mellen built a 22-room frame house on the 800-acre estate. For many Tri-Lakes area residents, easy access to quality golf courses is an added boGrab your clubs nus of living in the region. There are five and take in the scenery as you tee up at some of breathtaking courses within 20 minutes the best golf courses and of downtown Monument. private clubs Colorado has Three public golf courses offer chamto offer, all just a short pionship play at reasonable prices; King’s drive from downtown Deer Golf Club and Monument Hill Monument. Country Club in Monument, and Perry Park Country Club in Larkspur. The Air Force Academy’s Eisenhower Golf Course is private, but if you can get on with a member or someone in the military you will experience an unforgettable day on the link. The Club at Flying Horse in North Gate is also a private course. It was built in 2005 out of the heart of a legendary landscape. The 18-hole course was designed by golf legend Tom Weiskopf. It has a European resort-style feel with bloodlines that rival those of the greatest venues in the world. King’s Deer is a regulation 18-hole championship golf course. It was designed and built by Redstone Golf Group and opened in 1999. Throughout its history, King’s Deer has earned a reputation for its outstanding conditions and quiet atmosphere, as well as breathtaking views of Pikes Peak and the Front Range. With four sets of tees, the course tests the abilities of golfers of all skill levels. The lush rolling fairways and smooth undulating greens give the feeling of a Scottish links style course making your golfing experience truly exquisite. Monument Hill Country Club is nestled in Woodmoor, a prestigious community in Monument. It is located just minutes east of exit 161 at Interstate 25 and CO-105. At 7,300 feet, this course also has beautiful views of Pike Peak. The course is lined with Ponderosa Pines and is designed by J. Press Maxwell. The 18-hole course opened in 1969 and measures 6,715 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 140 and a 71.6 USGA rating. The course features five sets of tees for different skill levels. Perry Park is a 7,007-yard par 72. The layout was designed by noted Colorado golf architect,

The par 72 can be stretched to over 7,300 yards but the 7,000-foot elevation makes it play much shorter. Other unique characteristics include no out-of-bounds and only a few small water hazards. The Silver Course, designed by Colorado architect, Frank Hummel, is the newer of the two Eisenhower courses. It is shorter than the Blue but makes up for its lack of length with King's Deer Golf Club fast, tricky greens, narrow fairways and many hazards. The museum’s mission is to provide, maintain and expand a museum resource for historical data, artifacts and other items of significance relating to Palmer Lake, Monument, and the Palmer Divide area and make resources available to the public on a scheduled basis. The Lucretia Vaile Museum began in the basement of the Palmer Lake Marshal's Offices (originally the AT&SF Section Foreman's house). The museum quickly outgrew that building, and the current Library-Museum was dedicated on October 4, 1981. The building was erected as a memorial to Lucretia Vaile, who left a bequest to the town of Palmer Lake, which was used to build the original structure. With the new building came new museum pieces. An area furrier who was going out of business donated the glass display cases still used in the museum. An addition was built in 1996 with money the Palmer Lake Historical Society received from the estate of Lena Royse, providing storage and administrative space. The Museum now contains permanent exhibits dedicated to the towns of Palmer Lake, and Monument as well as the surrounding area. The rich history of the Tri-Lakes is maintained as a legacy for those yet to come.

Aircraft onsite include a C-47 Gooney Bird (or the Navy’s Douglas R4D), a T-33 Thunderbird, an F-104 Starfighter and the biggest aircraft in the collection, a fully restored B-29 Superfortress that towers over the rest of the collection in Hanger 1. Rosemount Museum is the 37-room mansion built in 1893 by banker John A. Thatcher. It remained the Thatcher family home for 75 years before becoming a museum and nearly all its furnishings are original to the home. Pueblo County Historical Society Museum volunteers have collected and preserved local and regional historical artifacts including Saddles by local renowned makers, early Pueblo photos, Mesa Verde pottery, railroad artifacts, artifacts from the Pueblo Dodgers baseball team and oral history tapes.

Tri-Lakes area is a bird watcher’s paradise

COMMUNITY GUIDE

By Rob Carrigan

When the first class at the United States Air Force Academy was considering a mascot in Birding is the the fall of 1955, the cadet wing chose the largest spectator sport falcon because they felt it best characterin America, and because ized the combat role of the U.S. Air Force. of the vast open spaces and “They did not specify any particular diverse habitat of Colorado, the Tri-Lakes area is host species, thus, any falcon can serve as masto abundant birdlife cot,” says a fact sheet from the Academy. for your viewing “Although they are members of the pleasure. hawk family, falcons differ in that they have long pointed wings and dark eyes. There are five types of falcons native to North America, ranging in height from two feet to as small as five inches. They are the arctic gyrfalcon, the largest; peregrine falcon, sometimes called the duckhawk; prairie falcon; American merlin, or pigeon hawk; and the American kestrel, also known as a windhover or a sparrowhawk.” Some of the characteristics which led to its selection are: • Speed: can attain velocities exceeding 200 miles per hour in stoops or dives on their prey. • Powerful and graceful flight, with strong, deep wing beats; they maneuver with ease, grace and evident enjoyment. • Courage: fearless and aggressive, falcons fiercely defend their nest and young against intruders. They have been known to unhesitatingly attack and kill prey more than twice their size. • Keen eyesight: about eight times sharper than man. • Alertness, regal carriage and noble tradition. In Colorado, there have been more than 460 different kinds of birds recorded according to hundreds of bird watchers that have recorded them over the years which became the official state record. Birding is the largest spectator sport in America and its popularity here in this state is because of an unusually rich and abundant birdlife. “Why are there so many birds?” asks Stan Tekiela, author of Birds of Colorado: Field Guide. “One reason is open space. 104,000 square miles, making it the eighth largest state. Despite its size only about 4 million call Colorado home. On average, that’s only 39 people per square mile. Most of these people are located in and around four major cities, all of which line up in a narrow belt of about 200 miles along the eastern foothills of the Rockies. Over 80 percent of the state’s population lives an urban environment. This concentration of people leaves plenty of room for birds.” But Tekiela notes it not just open space that allows for so many birds. “It’s

also the diversity of habitat… Water also plays a part in Colorado’s bird populations. There is over 371 square miles of water surface in the state… And varying habitats also mean variations in weather. Since elevation in the state rises from approximately 4,000 feet in the eastern plains to over 14,000 at the mountaintops, there are great differences in weather.” On Oct. 5, 1955, a splendid peregrine was the first falcon presented to the cadet wing. It was named "Mach 1," referring to the speed of sound. While "Mach 1" is still the official mascot name, each bird receives an individual name from

the falconers. Ten to 15 falcons are kept in the mews (enclosures for trained hawks) north of the cadet area. The majority are prairie falcons native to Colorado. Cadets train both the tiercels (males) and falcons (females) to perform flying demonstrations. , Colo. She is now on display in Arnold Hall. Because of the local presence of the United States Air Force Academy, and nearby Peterson and Schriever Air Bases, in addition to NorthCom and other concerns, there is also preponderance of mechanical birds in the area’s air space as well.
