In much of the south Denver metro area, the disputes that property owners filed with their county officials over whether their property values should be lowered for tax purposes has outstripped recent years by thousands of filings. Douglas County property owners filed disputes, or appeals, for about 20% of the properties that received new property values this year — the
highest percentage of appeals in recent history for the county, according to Toby Damisch, who heads Douglas County’s property valuation office. “And I don’t expect for this to ever happen again,” said Damisch, the county assessor, adding: “It’s a complete anomaly.” In appeals, owners argue their property value should be lower — and tens of thousands in the south Denver suburbs have taken that step. market, home values have spiked since the last time homeowners received notices of value two years ago. In Douglas County, residential properties saw increases in value between 30% and 60%, with a median of 47%. During the June 8 Parker Water and Sanitation District board meeting, Kory Nelson encouraged board members to adopt a motion that would remedy the May 2 board of directors election results. The motion failed in a 3-2 vote. While addressing the room, Nelson said the board took an illegitimate oath of office last month. “The residents of these 62 homes in Lincoln Creek Village who you disenfranchised are shocked, dismayed and quite frankly pissed off that you did this,” said Nelson. According to Nelson, he went to many of the Lincoln Creek Village residents and collected signatures on a petition “demanding” they can vote in the election and that many would have voted for him. “With the full board here tonight, I am asking anyone of these directors to adopt a formal written motion as their own and second it, to force a vote,” said Nelson.
