It was another successful year for the Elbert County Fair. The much anticipated yearly occasion took place from July 30 to Aug. 7 at the Elbert County Fairgrounds in Kiowa. The 2022 Elbert County Fair Junior Market Sale was a huge success, setting a new sale record of $850,780, nearly $90,000 more than 2021. Organizers believe it may end up being this year’s highest market sale in Colorado. The sale took place at the Horse Pavilion at the Elbert County Fairgrounds on Aug. 6. The Junior Market Sale consists of animals raised by young people ages 8-18 who are in good standing with either 4-H or Future Farmers of America. Throughout the course of the Elbert County Fair, the kids and teens participate in livestock market shows, competing for Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion in the given category. At the market shows, animals are divided into weight categories and judged based on animal-specific established criteria. The participants are allowed to show multiple animals in the showmanship competition but are only allowed to sell one per category in the Junior Livestock Market Sale, with the caveat that each animal category’s Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion must be sold. In addition to the champion and reserve champion sales, there was $150,000 of additional sales. SEE MARKET, P10
