As summer’s 90-degree-plus days crawl into September, local school officials say students and staff are staying cool largely thanks to air conditioners in nearly every building. School staffers are also using other means to lower temperatures in buildings without central air. “Beyond ensuring our building systems are running well, our school staff is always mindful of keeping kids cool during the heat, whether they are inside or out,” said Kevin Denke, Adams 27J School District spokesman, said via email. “This can include frequent water breaks to keep students hydrated and encouraging the use of refillable water bottles.” All the buildings and facilities in the Brighton-based Adams 27J School District are equipped with air conditioning, even in the oldest building, which was built in 1926, said Denke. That means there was no need to include the installation of new HVAC systems in the district’s $515 million bond issue in 2021, he said. SEE COOL SCHOOLS, P7
