Timothy Johnson, who lives in Shakopee, Minnesota, regularly searched online for branches of his Paulson family tree. He never guessed he’d find three whole books about them in Fort Lupton, of all places. “I was searching online, and an article came up. I think it was the Commerce City Sentinel Express. The article did not have pictures but the description matched the Paulson family tree, I immediately called the librarian, “Johnson said. It was a November 2021 story about how librarians at the Fort Lupton Public Library had some very specific genealogical books among a pile of donations. Librarians had found the books and hoped to find the family whose past they detailed. Johnson said he was interested in genealogy and started his Paulson genealogy family tree project just when COVID began in 2020, just as something to do. But he’d never found a bounty of information like this before. “When I got the books it knocked me off my chair seeing those old original photos, and I’ve seen some of them and some I had not seen before that are still surviving,” Johnson said. Surprising find The story starts when Cindy Lyons, a librarian with Fort Lupton Public School and Library, found three three-inch ring binders of the Paulson, Miller genealogy in the library storage room. “I was searching the storage room for history about the Fort

By August 2022, Johnson called Lyons to claim the genealogy books, and she sent all three along right away. “I said, ‘I’m familiar with the Paulson family tree book, but the other two I’m not familiar with but you might as well send them to me. Brighton-based School District 27J will ask voters to approve a mill levy override on November’s ballot. Members of the district’s Board of Education voted unanimously Sept. 6 to forward the funding request to voters. “We can’t afford not to go out and ask our voters again,” board director Ashley Conn said. “Look at our finances; look at our needs. We’re way behind and our community needs to understand those facts.” A mill levy override is a request of voters to approve an increase in the rate of their property taxes. The increased revenue can be used for operational expenses, such as programs and people. This will be the eighth time since 2000 that the board has asked for local support for schools at the ballot box. However, in those eight attempts, voters have yet to approve mill levy overrides for things like staffing, educational programs, teacher compensation, and instructional needs. 27J Schools is third from last in per-student funding statewide and it is the lowest funded district in the Denver metro area. 27J last passed a mill levy override in 2000 for $750,000 which today equates to $41 per student.
