Fort Lupton adds two items to November ballot Marijuana grow tax, Rec Center expansion make the cut BY STEVE SMITH SSMITH@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

A new excise tax on retail marijuana sales will make November’s ballot in Fort Lupton, but only by a one-vote margin. Council voted 4-3 to put the ques-

tion to the voters. Valerie Blackston, Claud Hanes and Chris Ceretto cast the “no” votes. If voters approve, the tax would amount to 1.5 percent on future grow operations. Council will have to adopt an ordinance to outline the rules for grow operations later — if voters approve the tax question — much as councilors did when voters approved the sale of medical and retail marijuana two years ago. Earlier this year, the council approved retail and medical marijuana licenses for four businesses, all away

from the downtown area. “I’m curious if this has to go this year,” Blackston said. “I feel it would be a better idea to wait and see what comes of retail.” Mayor Zo Stieber Hubbard said grow operations and retail/medical marijuana businesses were different. “Growing operations allow the farming of marijuana for sale to other businesses outside the city,” she said. “Higher revenue is a possibility.” SEE BALLOT, P4

A love of dogs, and especially highly trained police dogs, led a Frederick nine-year-old to raise $1,007 for the Frederick Police and K-9 officer Dobby and his handler. “I want to help the police and their dogs because they work hard to keep the community safe, and I want to help repay them,” Morgan said. On August 23, with her parents and grandparents, Morgan delivered the check to K-9 Dobby and his handler, Officer Ian Austin. Dobby and Morgan developed a friendship, and she learned about his training and his favorite toy, a ball on a rope. Officer K-9 Dobby and Officer Austin have been certified with the K-9 unit for one year. Austin started with the Frederick Police Department two years ago and was selected last year to restart the K-9 SEE DOBBY, P20
