He helps with bingo games, keeps score and sets up a bowling game with plastic balls and pins, and helps facilitate a men’s group. Walden spent much of her life
Evergreen businesses are on a fishing expedition — trying to find the right bait to lure in a great catch of new employees. Some are offering wages in the range of $15 to $20 an hour, hoping that boosting incentives will bring in the workers they need, especially with more people frequenting area businesses this summer. It’s not only restaurants looking for workers; banks, insurance agents, Henderson Mine and more are searching for help and beginning to get a bit desperate. Representatives from 22 area businesses joined together at a jobs fair at El Rancho Brewing on May 24 to find much-needed employees. They spoke with 22 job seekers, and while that was a respectable number, the need is much greater. Nancy Judge, president of the Evergreen Area Chamber of Commerce, said the business owners couldn’t wait any longer — not even until public schools’ summer break — because they need to hire now. Businesses are frustrated because they can’t find help yet hopeful that 2021 will be a prosperous year after

Marketing Director Lisa Carter explained that it’s important to help the seniors get involved in activities that bring them joy. “We’re here to meet their needs,” Carter said, “and to engage them when they want to be engaged. Kling given Rotary’s Ethics in Business Award STAFF REPORT
Kappy Kling, the owner of HearthFire Books & Treats, has been given the Rotary Club of Evergreen’s 2021 Ethics in Business Award. Kling purchased HearthFire in Bergen Park in 2010 and made changes over the years to meet community requests, according to the Rotary club. A key component of the store’s success is engaging with the community, and HearthFire sup-
ports area schools, and hosts events for Mountain Youth Musicals and Resilience1220. HearthFire supports local authors, artists and book clubs, was a founding member of the Rocky Mountain Literary Festival and generally supports local nonprofits. Kling also has been involved in Leadership Evergreen and the Evergreen High School Education Foundation, and will host an exchange student next year.
The club has been giving this award since 2009, looking for businesses that comply with Rotary International’s Four-way Test: “Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?” The award comes with a $500 prize that recipients donate to the charity of their choice. Kling selected Resilience1220.

Upgrades ahead for downtown Morrison Grant will provide funding for more than $500,000 in improvements BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Downtown Morrison will get more than a half million dollars in upgrades thanks to a state Safer Main Street Grant. “This is amazing,” Town Manager Kara Winters said. “We will be doing crosswalk improvement, installing traffic-calming medians and striping areas to hopefully add parking for the town. The cross-

walks are huge. We’re trying to make them all (Americans With Disabilities Act) accessible.” Winters said the town is sending out a request for proposals for an engineering firm, and she expects the work to be done in fall 2022. The total project cost will be $532,500, with $426,000 coming from CDOT grants. The town will kick in the remaining funds, expecting to reap many benefits for town businesses, residents and tourists alike. Winters said the town will host meetings with the community to get input on the five projects the grant will pay for, especially since businesses are concerned about where trucks will be able to make

The five projects and the general proposals are: • Eastern crosswalk upgrade: Design an upgraded to the crossing on Highway 8 between Mount Vernon Road and Market Street, adding curb bump-outs, a pedestrian crossing, pedestrian-activated flashing warnings and a raised median with planter boxes. • Highway 8 and Stone Street intersection upgrade: Intersection upgrades and traffic-calming elements on both roads in conjunction with CDOT plans to reconstruct the intersection. In addition, there will be pedestrian crossings,

landscaped curb bump-outs and a pedestrian refuge island. • Mount Vernon Creek bridgecrossing upgrade: A better crossing for the Mount Vernon Creek bridge including a ramp to make it ADA accessible with curb bumpouts on the north side. • South Park Avenue crossing: An upgraded crossing of Highway 8 including a raised, planted median with an upgraded pedestrian crossing between South Park Avenue and the Highway 8/Maple Street intersection. The traffic light at South Park Avenue is expected to be removed. • Analyze and design the removal and reinstallation of parallel parking and bicycle markings.

When one of their teachers and her neighbors needed help preparing their new yards, students Evergreen Country Day School were more than willing to help. The school’s 16 seventh-graders took a field trip to Empire’s Habitat for Humanity project site on May 21. There, they prepared the soil and put down sod at three houses, including the future home of ECDS teacher Coral Herrin. Herrin, who currently lives in Arvada, has taught at ECDS for several years, most recently as a third-grade teacher. So, having the students take a field trip to her house and help set up her yard was incredibly meaningful, she described. “I had some of these students in first-grade,” she said. “ … They’re working hard.” Seventh-grader Ronan Pocock, one of Herrin’s learning support students, said he appreciated the opportunity to see his teacher’s future home and take a break from school. “I love being out in the mountains,” Ronan said. “It’s a beautiful spot.”

Ronan and classmate Callen Dickerson described Herrin as extremely nice, funny, creative and fun to be around. Ronan commented that she’s serious but in a good way, while Callen said, “Her bark is worse than her bite.” Both boys felt honored to help Herrin and her new neighbors in Empire. Callen, who also had Herrin as a learning support teacher, said she’s
his favorite teacher and he hasn’t gotten to see her much this year because of COVID-19 precautions. So, volunteering at her new house meant a lot to him. Fellow seventh-grader Gabby Peonio, who was finishing her first year at ECDS, said she’s doesn’t know Herrin as well as her classmates, but appreciated the opportunity to help all the same. She enjoys volunteering, saying, “It’s an honor that they asked us to come out and help.” Additionally, Gabby said the May 21 trek to Empire marked her first time going on a field trip, explaining how her previous school never had

any. So, she greatly appreciated the chance to work outside the school and volunteer. The idea behind the field trip was to help students learn the spirit of giving back and have that tangible experience, middle school teacher Victoria Hutchen said. While it’s good to help others in general, having that connection between the students and Herrin made it all the more memorable. “They can see the progress and feel that they’re making a difference for someone they know,” she continued. “Coral has been in so many of their lives for so many years.” Thanks to the students and other
volunteers’ hard work, Herrin and her family are set to move into their new Empire home mid-July, she said. Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity has been wonderful to work with, and she appreciated the organization’s flexibility whenever problems came up. Because of her teacher schedule, Herrin hasn’t been able to work on her own home much and has been spending her sweat equity hours at Habitat’s resale store instead. Thus, spending a beautiful Friday working on her future yard with her students was very special, she said, adding, “It’s amazing that they want to help me out.”

Detour discussions during trail construction The detour around Evergreen Lake while the new north trail is built starting later this year will likely be in place for four months. One lane of traffic will be blocked, and the detour still is expected to take northbound traffic through downtown Evergreen and onto Meadow Drive to get to Evergreen Parkway, while southbound traffic will drive on the remaining open lane next to the lake. Chris Vogelsang with OV Consulting, the project engineer, said in a report to the Evergreen Park & Recreation Board that total closure of the road would not significantly shorten the amount of time the road would need to be closed. Board members had wondered whether a total closure might be a quicker way to get Evergreen traffic flowing normally. In addition, CDOT has asked for an enhanced traffic analysis to provide more detailed evaluation of how much the detour will delay traffic and whether something can be done to move traffic through Evergreen, the report said. Vogelsang also said in his report that additional signage would be placed on Douglas Park Road both in downtown Evergreen and where it intersects with Meadow Drive to keep local traffic only there. A resident had spoken at the April board meeting about drivers using the road, which is narrow and steep, when there are traffic jams in downtown Evergreen.
Discussions continue for local direct lake access Evergreen Park & Recreation District officials will meet again with the Evergreen Metro District to see if a solution can be found for the residents living on the south shore of Evergreen Lake who want to access the lake from their properties. Board members at the May 25 meeting generally liked the idea, but Executive Director Ellen O’Connor said EMD was concerned that allowing property owners lake access would open the floodgates to others who would like special access, leaving the water vulnerable to the invasive species. “The board is generally in favor of the idea,” board President Monty Estis said, “and we know there are a lot of details to work out. Let’s see if we can work out a solution.”
Catalytic converters stolen The catalytic converters on three Evergreen Park & Recreation District vans were stolen recently. One van had been parked at the Wulf Recreation Center, while the other two were parked in the Buchanan Fields parking lot, Park Operations Manager Heart Cameron told the EPRD board on May 25. The district was able to find replacements, and going forward, the vans will be parked either in locked areas or in areas with surveillance cameras.

Watercraft-washing station opens in June The watercraft-washing station being erected in the Evergreen Lake parking lot will be operational the week of June 7, Evergreen Park & Recreation District Executive Director Ellen O’Connor told the board. on May 25. The Evergreen Metro District, which is responsible for water quality, has erected the station to help keep invasive aquatic species that attach themselves to private boats from entering the lake and hurting the water supply. In 2019, for example, EMD closed the lake to private watercraft in early August to prevent the invasive species from getting into the water. Trained EPRD workers inspect all private watercraft before they enter the lake, and in the past, the owners of dirty or questionable watercraft were asked to go to a car wash. The new washing station will be more convenient for private boaters and paddleboarders.
Patrons returning to rec district facilities The transition to more open Evergreen Park & Recreation District facilities is going smoothly, Executive Director Ellen O’Connor told the board at its meeting on May 25. “Participation levels are coming right along,” she said, noting that a Silver Sneakers class, for example, recently had 30 in-person participants. The district has hired 90 employees, most of them seasonal, to work at Evergreen Lake, on the grounds crew and more. O’Connor said the rec centers were not bursting at the seams, but patrons are returning at a comfortable rate.

VOICES Trusting adults to be adult about this
I
received my COVID-19 vaccine a few days ago. Knock on wood, I am doing just fine with no discernible side effects other than an expected sore arm. All during the pandemic I found that the most effective course was the middle path. The alarmism about the pandemic as well as the dismissal of the pandemic as inconsequential seem to me to both be mistaken. COVID is not inconsequential with almost 600,000 dead in the United States. Using common sense precautions, anyone can do what is necessary to protect themselves against the virus. It was originally my intention to not speak about COVID vaccines, but a number of things changed my mind. My vaccination card is in my wallet, and if I show it, I can prove that I was vaccinated.
But I should not receive that request from anyone other than my personal physician or health care provider. I find it hard to believe that if I attend a gathering at a private home — that the host or Columnist hostess will ask to see my vaccination card along with the cards of other attendees. It would seem that a commercial establishment would be less likely to do this. However, there are already news reports of commercial establishments doing just that in Denver. Those who are vaccinated will mostly resent such an invasion of privacy. Their word that they were vacci-

nated should be enough for others whether at a commercial establishment or private residence. Pragmatic businesses like Costco will not require you to show a proof of vaccination. Good for them. I initially found it odd that different individuals would announce on social media that they had come down with the COVID virus. Under the different circumstances of the pandemic, it was a reasonable thing for them to do because they were warning others who might have had contact with them prior to their diagnosis. Part of getting back to normal means trusting adults to behave as adults would behave. I trust people enough to not monitor them about their vaccination status or the status of their health. That means presuming that they
are well if they are out in public interacting with others. It also means presuming that they are smart enough to isolate themselves if they are not feeling well. As late as 2019, my attitude towards people and their judgment regarding their health was the prevailing attitude in society, and I imagine one day it will be again. I respect those who made a different choice from me because I trust them enough to behave as adults should. The danger as the pandemic ends is that a broad distinction in America will develop between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated. Such a distinction is a danger that must be avoided. Gender influences various health issues

steoporosis is more common in women. Symptoms of coronary artery disease and heart attack may be different between men and women. Women have a harder time quitting smoking than men. Women are twice as likely as men to experience depression. Even the results of common screening tests may be different between the sexes. These are just a few of the health differences between men and women. I encourage all women to schedule your annual women’s well-visit with your doctor to talk about preventive care and screenings that check for risk factors for chronic conditions and early signs of disease. Women should consider a variety of screenings depending on their age or risk factors. In particular, there is a focus on significant health disparities affecting women of color. About 700 women still die each year in the U.S. from complications due to pregnancy. American Indian, Alaska Native and Black women are
two to three times more likely to die of pregnancy-related causes than white women. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two out of three pregnancy-related deaths are considered preventable. It’s a good practice Guest Columnist to consult your doctor about contraceptives and sexually transmitted infections. Testing for cervical cancer will help detect the high-risk human papillomavirus virus which can lead to cervical cancer. And, mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, when it’s easier to treat and before it’s big enough to feel or cause symptoms. Some diseases such as diabetes are not so easily detected without medical tests. Women can develop diabetes during pregnancy known as gestational diabetes. Others may want to be screened for diabetes mellitus, a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood sugar,

Anxiety screenings may also be appropriate given the high levels of anxiety disorders pregnant or postpartum women experience, as well as women who may be victims of domestic violence. As I noted earlier, women have a harder time quitting smoking than men because they metabolize nicotine, the addictive ingredient in tobacco, faster than men. Metabolism differences may explain why nicotine replacement therapies, such as patches or gum, work better in men than women. Knee injuries, such as ACL tears, are more likely to occur in women and girls while playing sports. This difference is due to aspects of a woman’s anatomy. And, because there may be differences in symptoms of coronary artery disease and heart attack between women and men, the results of common screening tests may also be different. These differences can
lead to a misdiagnosis. For women aged 50 and continuing to age 75, there are additional health concerns: • Colorectal cancer screenings are encouraged. • And osteoporosis is more common because they have less bone mass than men and can experience more bone loss during hormonal changes at menopause. It’s also very important to be attentive to mental health, including managing stress and getting enough sleep, getting active and attending regular checkups and well-women visits with a primary care physician or advanced care practitioner. Amidst all of these medical warnings and concerns, there is good news. Women can begin and achieve better health at any age or life circumstances. Evergreen Fire/Rescue is poised to select a firm to design and build its new Station 1, which will replace the district’s oldest station on Highway 73 near downtown Evergreen. The station, which will be constructed on the former Evergreen Mountain Market property, is estimated to cost about $8 million and has been more than 20 years in the making. It is being funded from property taxes collected thanks to a mill levy increase approved by voters in 2016. Plans call for a 15,000- to 20,000-square-foot building with 11 vehicle bays, crew quarters, a kitchen, exercise room and meeting room. Part of the reason the fire district needs a new station, according to Fire Chief Mike Weege, is that newer fire engines, which are taller than older models, will not fit through the doors of the current building. The only engines housed in the current Station 1 are at least 25 years old, and once they are replaced, they will no longer fit. Weege hopes the selection committee will make a recommendation to the fire board at its June 8 meeting. Because tenant leases at the Evergreen Mountain Market property don’t expire until October 2022, demolition is expected to start soon after, with construction starting in spring 2023 and move-in in 2024. Weege said several community meetings will be conducted to get input from the public about the design and construction. No decisions have

For those who’ve recently dreamed about hanging a “Gone Fishing” sign on the window and heading to the great outdoors, this weekend is the perfect time to do it. Colorado’s annual Free Fishing Weekend takes place June 5 and 6. So, if you haven’t gotten around to getting that fishing license yet, or are a beginning angler just learning the ropes, opportunity awaits. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) invites both residents and nonresidents of all ages to participate. Among Lakewood’s participating locations are Bear Creek Reservoir, home to naturally reproducing brown trout and stocked with rainbow trout annually by CPW. You could also land a saugeye, perch, smallmouth bass or bluegill. Lakewood Park Ranger Luke Wilson recommends trying small worms and PowerBait to lure in those prize-winning trout from the reservoir at Bear Creek Lake Park. Other locations include Main and

An earlier fire board purchased property on Troutdale Scenic Drive, but CDOT concerns about emergency vehicle access to Evergreen Parkway made the site an unlikely candidate for a new fire station. In fact, earlier this year, the district decided to sell the property. Officials considered remodeling the existing station, but that would entail substantially digging into the hillside behind the building, and the area in front of the station is short, already making it difficult to back firetrucks into the building.
June 2, 2021 Fire officials knew that Jefferson County would eventually widen Highway 73, Weege said, and that prediction is coming to fruition when the road will be widened to three lanes from Plettner Lane to Buffalo Park Road in 2022-23. So the best choice for the department, officials decided, was to construct a new building. In 2016, when the fire district asked and received a mill levy increase from voters, the fire board decided not to ask for a bond to pay for a new station. Instead, the district promised voters that part of the mill levy increase would be used for a new fire station, and state law requires that the district fulfill the promise. The district spent $1.5 million

to purchase the Evergreen Mountain Market property and the property directly behind it. It has $4.5 million saved, and it plans to have the remaining funds available to pay the construction bills by the time the building is completed in 2024, Weege said. Balancing budget needs Weege said funding a new fire station is not hindering wildfire mitigation efforts, noting that this year, the district has budgeted nearly $1 million for a 10-member fuels crew that does mitigation work, the district’s chipping program, equipment, grant writing and more. 2020’s wildland budget was $775,000, Weege said, plus the department spent $375,000 on a Type 3 wildland fire engine that can be deployed in case of emergencies here and elsewhere in the state. “We have invested a lot (in wildfire mitigation), and we are committed to helping the community,” Weege said, “but the community has to help, too.” EFR has received permission from both Jefferson and Clear Creek counties to perform roadside mitigation, especially after a recent report noted that most evacuation routes in Evergreen are not passable in a wildfire event. However, Weege notes that road rights-of-way are not as wide as people might think. The EFR fuels crews will be working on 14 acres of Dedisse Park across from Keys on the Green on Upper Bear Creek Road
that will include roadside mitigation, he said. Of the 120 square miles in the Evergreen Fire/Rescue district, the majority in private property, land that EFR does not have the authority to mitigate. That’s where the public comes in. “These are your properties and your homes,” he said. “You have to take steps to help us to protect your homes. We need property owners to join in on the work. We can’t do it alone.” People can do a lot to prepare for living in a wildfire-prone environment, he added, noting that 10 subdivisions have created Community Wildfire Protection Implementation Plans. Known as a CWPIP, the document helps a community define areas that can be hazards to access and egress during a wildfire and define mitigation standards to implement to make the community less susceptible to wildfire. Planning for the future The district wants to move the ambulances and emergency response personnel at Station 4, which is further south on Highway 73, to the new Station 1, so Station 4 becomes the central location for wildfire mitigation trucks, equipment and personnel. Weege says the district is planning for the new Station 1 to last 75 years. “A major station like this,” he said, “we want to build it to last.”

a devastating 2020. Why it’s difficult Business representatives say the employment landscape has changed not only here but around the country. In general, they are having a tougher time finding workers than in years past, and they surmise it’s for several reasons attributed to the pandemic: people preferring to work from home, unemployment checks being large enough so people don’t need to work, moms not working because they are home with their kids and more. For some like J.R.’s Landscaping, summer help is a must, while others are increasing their staffs to prepandemic levels. “I think about the opportunities,” said Bryan Caldwell, an American Family Insurance agent. “There are all of these great companies hiring, so people can find something that fits them.” Victoria Logan, director of operations at Lariat Lodge Brewing Co., said weathering the pandemic restrictions was difficult, especially with laying off staff, and now trying to hire staff as the restaurant has gotten busier has become disheartening. “It wears on people trying to stay in the fight,” she said. four positions open. Lisa Cordova, owner of Aspen Way Chalet, is looking for a couple of housekeepers. She says she posted the job openings in mid-April and usually gets about 10 candidates, but this year, none. Elk Run Assisted Living, for example, is looking for caregivers, since it has 20 new residents moving in between March and mid-June, according to Marketing Director Lisa Carter, because it’s important to keep a good ratio of caregivers to residents. Tammy Carroll, the branch manager at USBank, noted that she advertised a 15-hour position with no applications, so she has converted it into a full-time position, hoping it will be more enticing to job-seekers. Even Climax Molybdenum Mine, which operates the Henderson Mine
in Empire, is in desperate need of 40 tradespeople and laborers, according to engineer Talon Choate, who says the company offers travel stipends for those driving longer distances to get to work. Employment needs ebb and flow, he said, most of the time in conjunction with the economy. The eight restaurants represented at the jobs fair are looking for workers in every position, noting that they came close to shutting down during the pandemic when they were only allowed to offer carry-out services. Now, with downtown Evergreen packed on the weekends as the weather improves, they are busy but with insufficient staff to serve all of those customers. “We survived (the pandemic),” said Whitney Carloss with Parkside Café in Bergen Park, “but now we’re gearing up for the summer. It’s tough everywhere (to find employees), but especially in the mountains.”

The process server who appeared at the door on the night of May 6 was looking for one “Libby.” The woman who answered his knock informed him that nobody named Libby lives there, something the process server already knew. “It’s a tactic,” he would later explain. “I say the name wrong so they’ll self-identify themselves.” The woman wasn’t falling for it, but her male companion was. “Do you mean Lily?” he asked, helpfully. The process server did indeed mean Lily and, deeming her identity confirmed, dropped a packet of papers on the stoop and declared them served. The woman wasn’t buying that, either. Snatching up the dastardly documents, she followed the process server out to his car and did her level best to un-serve herself. Matters got muddled, people

Turns out she’d finally got Rig Jockey on the horn, and he’d told her he must have been “sleep-texting” and had no memory of the exchange. Lady Rider thanked the deputies for their effort, but said there was no need to put the legal hammer down.
