When the pandemic hit in 2020 cities across Colorado had to cancel big events and festivals that not only impacted the cities economically but also affected communities socially. This year the big events are coming back, with a bang. The city of Fort Lupton cancelled both Independence Day celebrations and its traditional late summer Trapper’s Day event due to the pandemic last year. “Both signature events are planned to be bigger and better than ever with live music, car shows, rides, food trucks, and more. We feel that we’re not only planning something fun for the community, but we see these activities as a way to build pride and show off our resiliency after such a hard year,” said Christy Romano, Fort Lupton Events Coordinator. The Trapper Days celebration is September 10 this year. Trappers Days in Fort Lupton’s is the largest event celebrating the culture of Fort Lupton’s pioneers of the past, present, and future. The festival starts with a parade downtown main street with live music, a beer garden, car shows, and vendors. The celebration continues at the historic park with the

The Frederick in Flight Hot Air Balloon Festival was the town’s most significant event that was canceled in 2020. It usually features the colorful hot air balloons in the air visible from

miles away. “It was canceled due to COVID-19,” said Jessica Hill, Communications and Engagement Specialist. During the pandemic, Frederick had its annual outdoor Chainsaws and Chuckwagon event in July but made it a small socially distanced event, as was the annual Taste of

Frederick festival. The Chainsaw artists were protected six feet away from the public and spread out. For the Taste of Frederick in June, residents stayed in the car and picked up samples of food from a variety of vendors. SEE SUMMER, P4

Thornton annexes 357-acres for new development

Thornton just grew by 357 acres, per a 7-1 vote by Thornton City Council at an April 13 meeting. After a public hearing, the council approved the annexation in northwest Thornton and two other measures to move the Clear Creek mixed-use development ahead. units and retail space. “It’s a beautiful project, it’s going to help our city moving forward,” said Councilman Sam Nizam. “We need those kinds of builds. James “Jim” Louis Jaeger

Ted “Shorty” Bucher

September 26, 1940 - April 13, 2021 James (Jim) Louis Jaeger, age 80, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home, in Brighton, Colorado, on April 13, 2021. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 26, 1940 in Imperial, Nebraska to Louis and Clara (Ohmie) Jaeger. He grew up, attended schools, and graduated from Chase County High School, in Imperial, in 1958. That is also where he met Sharon L. (Stout) Jaeger, his high school sweetheart, and two years later they married. A marriage that lasted for more than 60 years. Shortly after marrying, they moved to McCook, Nebraska, then to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and finally to Brighton, Colorado. Jim loved life as a young child and for a portion of that time was taught in a one room school building. He liked to note that he was the smartest in his class, however conveniently left out that he was the only one in his class. At the age of six he moved from a farm, a few miles to the northwest of Imperial, into town so he could play baseball, basketball and participate in track and field. His high school, Chase County High School, won the state championships in baseball his senior year (1958). He then went on to McCook Community College, where he continued to play baseball. His position was first base. Jim worked a few different jobs throughout his upbringing. His first job as a young man was as a freshman in high school (1955) and required that he drive from Imperial to McCook, 62 miles. He started by sweeping floors and doing small, tedious tasks and eventually worked his way up to department manager. In 1967 he transferred to the JC Penney store in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and on April 1, 1970 transferred to the JC Penny store in Brighton, Colorado, and was the store manager until 1977. He then decided to open up a shoe store, which eventually became Jim’s Shoes. The shoe store transformed from a shoe store to a shoe repair (cobbler) with some shoe/boot sales. He worked until he was 79, late 2020. His goal was always to work until he was 80, but Covid and other family needs led him to close the business before reaching that goal. Church and family always came first in Jim’s life. He was very devoted to his faith and was heavily involved in taking care of his church and community. Jim held many positions within his church and church

school over his 50+ years as a member. He was well known locally for such things as the one that led the downtown merchants and city to acquire Christmas lights for Main and Bridge Streets in town when they had none. He served on the Brighton School District 27J Board for 7 1/2 years, was a state judge for the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) of Brighton High School for 30 years, a board member of United Power for 12 years, a Brighton Jaycee, a Brighton Elk, and a Kiwanis member for over 30 years. Jim was also a diehard Nebraska Cornhusker fan who also grew to love the hometown high school team, the Brighton Bulldogs. He was an avid Bulldog fan and if you didn’t know where Jim was chances were that you may find him in the crowd of a Bulldogs sporting event. Jim was also an enthusiastic mountain hiker and bird watcher, and completed numerous continental divide hikes from the east side of the divide, over the divide, and ending near Grand Lake. He loved the outdoors and spending time with friends and family as much as he could. Jim is survived by his spouse, Sharon L. (Stout) Jaeger, of Brighton, CO; two children, Mike (Kristin Forster) of Baltimore, MD, and family; Colin and Ryan Forster; Jodi (Rob) Michel of Brighton, CO; three grandchildren: Kyle (Apryl) Michel, of Frederick, CO, Ashley (Alan) Ricard of Houston, TX, and Kayla (Julio) Campuzano of Chadron, NE; and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Louis and Clara (Ohmie) Jaeger. Memorial services honoring Jim will be Friday, April 30, 2021 at 11:00 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, 1400 Skeel Street, Brighton, Colorado 80601. Seating is limited and those desiring to attend will need to signup prior to attending. There will be no viewing or cemetery services. A reception will be held following at a location a few miles east of Brighton on Bromley Lane. Tabor Funeral Home will be broadcasting the service via Jim’s online obituary at www.taborfuneralhome.com for those unable to attend. For those desiring to make a donation in Jim’s honor, he requested memorials be made in his name to Zion Lutheran Church and designated to be applied to the “Building Debt Retirement Fund.”

Shorty was born in Alamosa, Colorado to Mike Bucher and Francis Valdez and was the second youngest of four siblings. Ted married the love of his life, Patty Bucher on November 4, 1970. Ted spent much of his life in Commerce City and Fort Lupton Colorado working in many different areas along the way before he established his own business called Shorty’s Tree Service. Shorty was a jack of all trades but found his final passion being the boss over his small crew that would trim, remove, and address all sorts of trees, shrubs, and bushes. It was not rare to see Shorty working weekends in the wood yard moving stumps, splitting wood, and cutting logs. Shorty loved his wife Patty dearly and admitted she was the real boss on many occasions. He also enjoyed spending time teaching his family the tricks of the world he had picked up over time. While formalized education was not always his cup of tea, those who know him would attest that he was street smart, wise beyond belief, but most importantly very generous with all that he knew. Ted was motivated by his faith in the Lord Jesus and attended church regularly as a believing Catholic. For fun he enjoyed attending church with his grandson Noah, but he also enjoyed telling funny stories, watching NFL and UFC, and when he was younger, he fished a lot. As he got older family became his source of fun and listening to what his grand kids and family were doing became more to him than anything. He died working to be sure that his family and children would never have to experience some of

the hardships that he and Patty worked their way through. Shorty’s home as he once called it, the “ranchito,” in Aristocrat Acres was his favorite place to be. He was proud of the home that he and Patty built over time. The garage with all his equipment, trucks, wood splitters, and his Bobcat tractor will certainly miss him since he spent nearly every weekend with these tools and that garage. The “ranchito” was his pride and joy and where he was able to spend his last moments on earth surround by his loving family. Ted is survived by his wife, Patty Bucher; their two sons, Tony and Ricky Bucher; along with several grandchildren, Samantha, Courtney, Shayla, Andrew, Jacob, Noah, and Marcus. Shorty is also survived by a brother, Danny Bucher. Shorty was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Francis Bucher; and his other two brothers, Billie and Sidney Bucher. Recitation of the Rosary is Tuesday, April 20, 2021, beginning at 5:00 p.m.; Funeral Mass is Wednesday, April 21, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., all at St. William Catholic Church, in Fort Lupton. Interment immediately follows at Hillside Cemetery, in Fort Lupton. It was Shorty’s desire that, in lieu of flowers and gifts, any type of donations for him would go to the Knights of Columbus for their faithful service to the poor and needy. James, also known as Jamo or Mo, was born on September 2, 1960 to Lupe & Duvie Torres. He grew up in Brighton with his siblings Dan, Linda and Mike. He met Patty in high school and had a son, Jose. A couple years later another son, Mario was born. Jamo worked construction most of his life and for the last six years he worked for the St. Augustine Church as the groundsmen. Jamo`s favorite thing was his Harley; any chance he got he would be on it. Jamo and Patty were married on February 19, 2021 surrounded by family.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Hernandez; sons, Jose (Jackie) and Mario; grandchildren, Shanisa, Tiara, Isaiah, Miriya, Noah, Xavier, Aubriana, Lt Xavier, and Rocky. Funeral Mass honoring James was held Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Augustine Catholic Church, in Brighton, Colorado with Interment following at Elmwood Cemetery. Severe weather 101 Weather service gives training for prospective spotters BY STEVE SMITH

Updrafts. Downdrafts. Mammatus. Funnels. Land spouts. Lightning. At some point during a two-hour online severe weather spotter training class April 14, National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Entrekin explained these weather terms and types of clouds to 235 people interested in becoming severe weather spotters. It’s one in a series of seminars the weather service offers in advance of severe weather season. The explanations included the various types of thunderstorms common (single-cell, multi-cell and supercell, the type more likely to cause tornadoes) in this area. All require air to flow into the clouds. The amount of wind determines the type of storm. “In a single cell storm, the winds are weak, and you can’t really tell the updraft and the downdraft,” Entrekin said. “After the heating of the day, there’s usually good updrafting. You can see well-defined edges to the clouds” like the shape of a cauliflower. The multi-cell storms have a series of up and downdrafts. Entrekin said storms can last about 30 minutes, but the complex can last for several hours. Supercell storms contain rotation in the clouds. Another key ingredient for these types of storms is wind shear, a rapid change in either

ignation. At the April 13 meeting, in addition to the annexation, the council only approved the zoning associated with the overall development plan and conceptual site plan. Yet some council members already expressed concerns about the housing. Councilor Jacque Phillips, who represents Ward 1 in south Thornton, said, “I believe in balanced housing and so when we see something going up north that

velocity or direction. “If you stand under a hose with no wind, you’re probably going to get wet,” Entrekin said. “But if you stand under a hose with strong winds, those winds take the water away from you. Wind can cause a storm to tilt.” Entrekin highlighted two other storm features. One is a wall cloud, which tends to form at the back edge of a storm and in an area free of rain. “When you see a wall cloud, there is a lot of in-flow,” Entrekin said. “A shelf cloud is linear and slopes away from the rain. A wall cloud moves with the rain.” Outflow winds, winds that come from the bottom of the clouds, can lead to storms in other areas. In some cases, they can cause strong winds up to 2½ miles away. In some cases, those winds can cover

larger distances. The front edge of a thunderstorm is a shelf cloud, which tends to create a lot of wind and rain. Entrekin also discussed last year’s derecho, the wind event that started in Utah, went through the Rockies and on up into the Dakotas. The weather service received more than 200 reports of winds that were more than 58 mph. One thing Entrekin stressed to the spotters was safety. “When thunder roars, go indoors,” he said. “Victims of lightning strikes are not charged, so it’s OK to touch them. Wait 30 minutes after you see the last lightning bolt before you go back outside.” Email Scott.Entrekin@noaa.gov.

But down in the south end, we have to look at high-density housing and very limited parks.” Though Phillips seemed to be making a larger point about differences in how Thornton is developed, Diana Rael, a representative of Norris Design, sought to respond by highlighting the plans to build a diversity of housing types. “Our intent is to provide a very eclectic blend of housing,” Rael said. After, Councilor Julia Marvin commented that diversity in housing type doesn’t necessarily

equal variety in housing costs, a point that community members made during a public hearing for a different development two weeks prior. Rael said the developers don’t currently have housing cost estimates. Marvin was the only dissenting vote on the measures. The only minor hiccup of the April 13 public hearing was a discussion about oil and gas wells currently operational in that area. Developers plan to plug up and abandon the oil wells when they build the development in future years. However, Extraction Oil & Gas, the company that currently manages the wells, doesn’t antici-

Greeley Stampede plans to return this summer Ticketing could start in May as officials wait for best estimate on restrictions BY HANNAH METZGER THE DENVER GAZETTE

One of Colorado’s foremost Western summer celebrations is returning this year with the annual Greeley Stampede community festival set to be held. This summer’s celebration is scheduled for June 24 to July 4 at Island Grove Park. This comes after the festival was forced to close in 2020 because of COVID-19 restrictions. “We are thrilled to finally say we are officially having a Stampede in 2021,” said Justin Watada, Greeley Stampede general manager, “but we still have a lot of work to do.” The Greeley Stampede tradition dates back to the late 1800s as a community celebration started to honor local potato farmers. Now, it’s an internationally acclaimed festival that

It features rodeos, concerts, a carnival, a Western art show, food and a Fourth of July parade. Officials don’t know what the festival will look like this year, saying they’re making modifications to meet current COVID-19 event guidelines. “The Greeley Stampede has been working hard making plans and collaborating with the city and state,” said Greeley Mayor John Gates. “We are confident that the Stampede is creating an event that will be safe and entertaining for our community.” Additional information on this year’s festival events will be available soon, officials said. Tickets are set to go on sale sometime in early May. Officials said the ticket sale date is so late because they are unsure what capacity they’ll be allowed with COVID-19 restrictions. This year the plans are in works for the Adams County Fair in August 2021. No Zombies or ballerinas in 2021

Westminster canceled most of its popular community events due to the pandemic such as Adult Egg Hunt, July 4, Westy Craft Brew Fest, and Halloween Harvest Festival including a few other events. “Those events typically range in attendance from 300 egg hunts to 34,000 for the harvest festival. Regardless of size, we were disappointed to see any of them canceled, they are cherished traditions in our community. Thankfully, we were able to pivot to other events that were compliant with health regulations to assist with social recovery,” said Rich Neumann, Westminster marketing and cultural affairs administrator. Due to the local and state public health changes, some events cannot be brought back, including the Adult Egg Hunt, Ballerina Dodge Ball, and the Zombie Golf Tournament. The City of Westminster Cultural Affairs Team is planning its 2021 lineup of events and celebrations for the community with some required public health protocols. “To achieve this, staff has shifted its focus from one-time events to month-long attractions that can accommodate smaller gatherings over

an extended period. Planned attractions are subject to change depending upon changing guidelines of local and state public health agencies,” said Ryan Hegreness, Westminster’s innovation and communication manager. Hegreness said with major public gatherings such as Westy Craft Brew Fest, Halloween Harvest Festival and Balloon Glow, the team is creating innovative activities for the community to participate safely than ever before. The city is also working with the Westminster Alamo Drafthouse to create a drive-in movie with live entertainment and with local breweries to create a socially distanced beer crawl in August. ‘We’re also partnering with the Denver Center for Performing Arts this summer to offer a series of acting workshops for youths using our new mobile art studio Art A La

Food Truck Carnival downsized

The city of Northglenn also had to cancel its big event of the year the Food Truck Carnival with carnival rides and vendors. “It hit us economically as well as some of the food truck vendors,” said City of Northglenn, Steven Stokes, Event Supervisor. Depending on local and state guidelines changes this summer Northglenn plans to create smaller events at four separate parks, similar to what the city did in 2020. “The Food Truck Grab and Go” will be held on June 4, 11 and 18 and August 12, 19 and 26 in two separate parks each night with live music. A new event added this year is Pride night on June 26 which is a familyfriendly event with a silent disco and drag show. The July 4 celebration will be held in four parks with a car show, lunch,

dinner, and dance bands, but there will not be a firework display due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Stonehocker Porch Concert will have a house concert performance on August 5, September, 2, and October 7. Thorntonfest spreads out

Thorntonfest was Thornton’s major event that was cancel due to the pandemic in 2020. This year it’s planned for June 5, but separated into seven venues. “Current health restrictions allow gatherings of no more than 175 people, which is why they broke the event up into seven venues. The capacity for each of those cohorts, though, may increase with the changing public health orders. Though the event is divided up into seven venues, all seven venues are within walking distance of each other,” said Chris Steinke, Recreation Superintendent. Thornton’s July 4th celebration depends on the current COVID status dial, Steinke said. Thornton’s COVID status must be at least in the blue stage, which means the outdoor guidelines move from the state health department authority to TriCounty Health. If that happens, Thornton staff can move forward with the event. The city will follow the guidance of TriCounty to make any modifications to provide a safe venue. Plans call for the venue to open at 5 p.m. without a live band and food vendors spread out around the venue. The city has set a May 14 deadline for deciding the July 4 celebration’s fate. If conditions worsen, the city will announce cancellation by then.

No Memorial Day parade Commerce City will not play host to the state’s largest Memorial Day parade for the second year in a row, thanks to coronavirus. Instead, the plan, inconjunction with the Commerce City Veterans Commission, is to honor those who have died in service of their country with a Memorial Day program at Veterans Memorial Park, 6015 Forest Drive. The city of Brighton plans to open its Oasis Family Aquatic Park starting Saturday, June 5, and continuing through Sunday. Aug. 8. Season passes are available. Speak Week starts April 26

The Brighton Youth Commission will be hosting a series of events for SPEAK (Suicide, Prevention, Education, Awareness and Knowledge) Week the week of Monday, April 26. The goal of SPEAK Week is to raise awareness about the prevalence of teen suicide and to educate the community on mental health issues and the stigmas surrounding them, according to a press statement. Part of the program is two virtual QPR (question, persuade, refer) courses at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on April 26. They are free. Key components covered in the training include: -How to question, persuade and refer someone who may be suicidal -How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide -The common causes of suicidal behavior -The warning signs of suicide -How to get help for someone in crisis The QPR courses will be presented virtually through Zoom - log-in details can be found at speak5k.org. The program consists of virtual and socially distanced events and a WPEAK Week walk Saturday, May 1. Virtual activities include outdoor art and other activities. The walk will take place at Carmichael Park in half-hour waves from 1 - 4 p.m. Facial coverings will be required and any other COVID-19 health and safety guidelines at the time will apply. The city of Brighton’s annual Trash Bash is set for two weekends. One is the weekend of Friday, April 30, and the other is the weekend of Friday, Sept. 24. In both instances, the drop-off point will be at the wastewater treatment plant, 325 N. Kuner Road. Acceptable items for trash bash include furniture, cabinets, appliances (not freezers or refrigerators), bicycles, cut-up carpet and doors. Small items have to be in containers. Total weight has to be relative to the type of container. Present a city of Brighton water bill or something that indicates your place of residence. A suggested donation of $10 will be accepted to help defray the cost. Car and light pick-up tires will be accepted for $7 each. Oversized tires are $10 each, and semi-tractor trailer tires cost $20.

Rec center to change to level blue May 1

The Brighton Recreation Center will be making several adjustments to align with Adams County moving to Level Blue on the COVID-19 dial. A city statement said as of Saturday, May 1, the center will move forward with providing extended hours, the return of several key programs, more fitness classes, lockers and more. Among the changes: No reservations for fitness classes except BOGA; The hot tub will be opened for a maximum capacity of three people; Increased swim capacity (no reservations required); Masters and youth swim team will return mid-May; Lockers will be available for use (locks will be available for purchase or you must provide your own); Increased gym capacity and extended drop-in pickleball hours; Chair massage Wednesdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m; $10 for 10 minutes; Community gardens and park shelters are available to reserve; In addition, the new hours of operation are 5:30 a.m, to 8 p.m. Monday through Thurdsday; 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday. Young entrepreneur program

The Youth Services’ Growing Grads Program starts its new Young Entrepreneur Program in June. The workshops will be virtual and will consist of a series of hour-long classes that will teach and empower youth how to build their own business. It’s for young adults ages 19. After the workshops, participants will be eligible to sell their products on an online marketplace. Interested buyers will then be able to purchase directly from the seller. “This is a class for young adults in Brighton who are passionate about entrepreneurship or just simply want to learn more,” said Tawnya Russell, manager of Brighton Youth Services. “We hear of so many great business ideas among youth in our community, so we hope we can help

The city of Brighton announced the return of its full moon bike rides. The first, the Pink Moon Ride, starts at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 26. Other rides are set for Wednesday, May 26, Thursday, June 24, Friday, July 23, Saturday, Aug. 22, and Monday, Sept. 20. All rides are free. They start and end at Emi Chikuma Splash Pad and Plaza, 1750 Skeel St. Ride sign-ups begin at 6:15 p.m. (participants will have to sign a waiver the first time they attend and check-in each ride thereafter). A free giveaway drawing and serving of treats will occur after each ride; to enter the drawing, you must check-in. The free monthly community event is for bicyclists of all levels to enjoy a leisurely five- to 10-mile ride through Brighton as the sunsets. A map of the rides will be posted to the Bike Brighton page of the City’s website. Face coverings will be required while waiting for rides (but are not mandatory while riding) and any other COVID-19 health and safety guidelines at the time of each ride will apply. First, it was a 23-game season for high-school baseball players. Then it became 18 games and eventually shrunk to 16. The Colorado High School Activities Association said it made the decision on a shorter season to keep in line with Title IX requirements. Some area coaches aren’t buying it. “I have many thoughts, but for the record, most everyone else in the country is trying to increase participation and opportunities for athletes, and CHSAA is taking opportunities away,” said BHS baseball boss Justin Stringer. Thornton’s coach, Jeremy Miller, agreed. “I’m definitely not in agreement with the decision, but it does sound like the coaches’ association made some headway and we may be getting two to three games added to our season,” he said. Adams City’s assistant coach, Erick Delatorre, is happy to have a season.

“But I’ll also say that having a shorter season does hurt us,” he said. “The majority of our players do not get the opportunity to play on club teams throughout the summer, so they rely on the school season to get game experience. Having a shorter season hurts us more than other high schools, especially when we are trying to rebuild the program.” Frederick’s coach, Colin York, said there is not a right and a wrong answer. “I go back and forth with the shortened baseball season. On one hand, I see and hear everything about Title IX and agree with keeping it fair and consistent between genders and their specific athletic programs,” York said. “On the other hand, the recent narrative has included the counterpoint of the lack of a season baseball had in comparison to softball, which is a fair point. In my opinion, I don’t think adding the two games to our season (something CHSAA and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment are discussing) is going to make up for the lost season

Through the end of last week, the Bulldogs won eight of their 10 matches, including a commanding victory over rival Prairie View on April 16. They beat the ThunderHawks in straight sets 25-13, 25-18 and 25-12. BHS swept all of its matches in the East Metro League and entered the week tied with Vista PEAK Prep for first in league with a perfect 4-0 record. The two teams were to face off

Adam Laubert is trying to address a need in sports programs that cater to all age levels and all ability levels. It’s the lack of officials, an issue that has caused postponements of area high-school and nationwide college contests. Part of the shortfall is the impacts of coronavirus. “There are a lot of veteran officials who don’t want to retire,” Laubert said. “A lot of people say, ‘We’ve had John Doe the past 25 years.’ We need to be looking for the next John Doe.” Laubert, who graduated from Prairie View High School in 2015 and then spent four years in the Army, is the operations director and

social media director with Herd of Zebras, a start-up company with a goal to make sure there are enough certified officials to work these contests. Rob Sigmon is the CEO/founder. Herd of Zebras started in 2006. Laubert moved back to Colorado after his military service. “I realized I love coaching, so I took a basketball job at Kipp Denver Collegiate School (the team was 14-7. Laubert took the job three weeks before the season started). It put me in a great position. I remember telling my dad what my game plan was, to coach football. (Laubert’s first football job was in Wabunsee, Kansas. His Army post was in Fort Riley, Kansas). He asked how I was going to do it. Then he said, ‘Go do it.’ I love working with kids. But I never thought I’d end

up doing this.” One target area for prospective game officials is present high-school students. Laubert said in three to four years’ time, those athletes could be officiating high-school games. “We’ve got accountability,” Laubert said. “We’ve never had to cancel or postpone a game. We had a lot of issues about putting new guys into the fire. I didn’t receive one complaint. “I’ve got four kids at Mountain Range (Laubert is an assistant coach during this spring season). We gave them the training, and they did a phenomenal job,” he added. “The coaches said they were the best refs they’d ever had. They can be a resource no one has tapped into. We’d like to find more kids like

this. If you find the right high-school kid, he’ll impress you.” The sign-up process (available at HerdofZebras.com) takes five minutes. Training, which takes place on weekends, involves all sports. Business is good. Laubert had to find more than 70 officials for a new program in Florida. The company also expects to expand into Arizona and Texas by the end of the month. The worldwide industry makes $60 billion annually, Laubert said. “A lot of associations think we are trying to put them out of business,” Laubert said. “We never want to do that. We want to help them solve that shortage. Our five- to 10year plan is to hire assignors, match salaries and make this grow and expand.”

Riverdale Ridge’s Mazurek makes his college choice BY STEVE SMITH

Riverdale Ridge High School’s Cayden Mazurek waded through all the things that go with recruiting, and he did so through an ongoing pandemic. Most importantly, he made his college commitment. “I was able to visit Lake Forest (Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois), and it was a beautiful place, especially being right in Lake Michigan,” Mazurek said. “Meeting the coaches and seeing practice was great. We had genuine conversations and a great time.” That wasn’t the only factor that

swayed the decision.

“I chose Lake Forest because of the hospitality and character of the school and coaches,” he said. “It feels like a family there, and that’s what I wanted.” Mazurek, who was expected to sign his letter on April 19 at RRHS, is a multi-sport athlete. The football teams from Chadron (Nebraska) State, McPherson University and Lewis and Clark State were interested in Mazurek. “It took me a while to actually make a decision on what school I wanted to attend,” Mazurek said. “My parents were on me because the clock was ticking. But I wanted to be sure I made the right choice, and I

believe I did.” Mazurek wants to major in finance with the goal of getting into the real estate field after college. Recruiting during this time did seem very weird, but I have nothing to compare it to,” Mazurek said. “From stories I hear, it seemed as if it was non-existent. But I don’t know any different, and we had to work with what we had.” Mazurek described his future as “nerve-racking.” “But I’m excited to move to a new chapter in my life, meet new people, and create experiences I won’t forget,” he said.
