The Arvada United Methodist Church held a celebration in honor of LGBTQ+ Pride Month on June 13 at their location on Carr Street. The event was attended by over 70 members and supporters of the LGBTQ+ community featured a small parade, informational booths, and speeches from House District 27 Rep. Brianna Titone and AUMC Bishop Dr. Amy Gearhart. The event ran from 12-2 p.m. and saw attendees adorned in rainbow regalia with signs supporting the LGBTQ+ community. A youth group set up an informational table to share resources for young people who identify as LGBTQ+. The AUMC joined the Reconciling Ministries Network in 2000, meaning that the congregation believes that “all people are God’s children and affirm(s) that all SEE PRIDE, P8

After seven hours of deliberation, dozens of public comments and months of debate, Amazon’s proposal to build a warehouse in western Arvada was rejected by City Council on June 15 with a 5-2 vote on an annexation ordinance necessary for the tech giant’s proposal to move forward. Mayor Marc Williams and Mayor Pro Tem Dot Miller were the two dissenting votes. Amazon’s proposal to build a 112,485 sq. ft. “last-mile” Delivery Station warehouse in Arvada — referred to as “Project Indiana” — involved annexing of unincorporated county land into the city, rezoning some of the land parcels and approval of the warehouse development plan. When the annexation of 6700 Indiana Street, 6702 Indiana Street, 6710 Indiana Street and a Portion of 6720 Indiana Street E was voted down, Amazon’s proposal was effectively denied. The 36-acre site in question borders the Maple Valley neighborhood and the Ralston Creek trail, a habitat for bobcats, coyotes, deer, and other species of wildlife. A group called the Ralston Valley Coalition — formerly known as Protect Maple Valley Park — formed to oppose the development based on a number of concerns that the group has raised. Prior to the Project Indiana vote, Council unanimously voted to annex Maple Valley Park, previously located in unincorporated Jefferson County, into Arvada. The council subsequently voted 7-0 to rezone Maple Valley Park from Jefferson County A-2 (agricultural) to Arvada Open Space. SEE AMAZON, P14

Collaboration in Jeffco Schools’ summer programs Community partners pitch in to make sure students can recover from the unusual year BY BOB WOOLEY BWOOLEY@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

As the 2020-21 school year drew to a close, a number of community organizations were concerned that summer supports for students would need to be more robust than ever to give students who struggled through COVID-19 disruptions and remote learning a fair chance to stay on track. Angela Baber, executive director of the Jeffco Schools Foundation, worked with many of them. The excitement in her voice was palpable when she spoke about summer collaborations between community partners and the district. She said the Jeffco K-12 Students Learning and Support Collaborative, a group of 60-70 community partners, was invested in finding solutions around summer supports for Jeffco students. Annual programs like Jeffco’s Summer of Early Learning and high school credit recovery had been planned before, but the district was leaving other summer support programs up to individual schools, in hopes those schools could best assess students’ needs.

“JSEL, at that point in time, three months ago, had the lowest enrollment it had ever seen. So, we really pulled together and started pushing to find out why,” Baber said. “And then district leadership and Dr. Susan Leach (Jeffco’s chief student success officer) came into that conversation. Within a span of a month, we went from JSEL being offered at seven physical locations and one online site to double the capacity of enrollment we’ve ever seen in the history of JSEL and expansion geographically to double the physical sites.” Community partners like The Action Center were invited to pitch in across the six-week long programs at each of the physical JSEL sites, providing direct supports like fresh groceries, produce, King Soopers gift cards and low-income internet assistance to students. In addition, Baber said that although grade levels for JSEL itself which focuses on reading for K-3 students haven’t expanded, JSELrelevant curriculum for grades 4 and 5 are being offered at JSEL locations and may be looked at as a pilot program for summer supports in future years.

Academics are not the only area of concern following this year like no other. Social and emotional supports have also been top of mind for many. When asked for an interview with decision-makers about summer support programs, the district instead, agreed to provide written answers to direct questions.In their written response to questions about the availability of social/emotional supports, the district said: “Many of the programs offered for middleand high- school level students have a social emotional/mental health component.” As for emotional supports during the district’s upcoming Jump Start programs, the response was: “School Social Emotional Liaisons are part of the planning teams for Jump Start, so intentional integration of social emotional learning skills will be part of the daily curriculum.” When asked about benchmarks or metrics community partners who received federal Elementary & Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds would need to meet, the district’s response read: “Metrics for measuring effectiveness were developed by our research and assessment team. All programs (credit recovery, transition, intervention) will be measured using attendance data, a student pre/post survey, and a parent post survey. For the ninth-12th grade credit recovery programs, we will also measure credits earned/ recovered. And for the academic intervention programs, we will measure using Spring 2021 to Fall 2021 MAP data.” One of the recipients of ESSER funds from the district is Edgewater Collective. Executive Director Joel Newton said from the beginning, Edgewater Collective’s mission has been to bring people together to solve big issues in Edgewater. Newton said they’ve been working with schools in the Jefferson Jr/Sr High School area since 2013, so it came naturally to them to step in to help with summer supports. He said when COVID hit, the relationships they had built over the last several years had given them a great starting point to implement different supports for students and families. Last summer, his organization put on a “Lunch and Learn” program, pairing food support with a literacy program. That lead to an enrichment program during the school year called “Pathway Pods.” “Then, in December 2020, we began to think about the summer

— the Jefferson Success Academy grew out of those conversations because we’d always wanted to do a summer program for incoming fourth through sixth graders — that was in addition to JSEL,” he said. “So, we started planning that in December to really focus on providing academic support for students, paired with enrichment, for a six-week program.” The Jefferson Success Academy program operates during the same days, times and dates as JSEL and offers students an hour each of literacy, math and enrichment, every day. It is being held at Edgewater Elementary. Newton said a program called I-Ready allows them to assess student needs and fill in gaps where needed. Teachers from Jeffco and other districts, along with paraprofessionals from Edgewater area elementary schools, provide the academic instruction. Enrichment (art programming) is taught by a Denver group called Museo de las Americas. The program also provides physical education and STEM activities. Noah Atencio is vice president of community impact of the Community First Foundation. He said they too got involved with the district as a result of the pandemic. They also gave out more than $400,000 in grants to a number of organizations including Edgewater Collective. Atencio said as the end of the school year approached, it seemed to him that everyone was feeling tension over what was going to happen for students — not around the district’s plans, but a general tension of emerging from COVID with a sense of uncertainty as people started to receive vaccinations and things started opening up again. He credits Baber for inviting district leadership to meet with community partners, spurring the expansion of JSEL and fleshing out programs for older elementary students, allowing for more of a one-stop approach. Atencio said the summer response feels organized and acknowledged the hard work it’s taken to get to this point. He said if actions speak louder than words, new Superintendent Tracy Dorland’s level of engagement in a recent K-12 Collaborative meeting gives him a clear indication that she’s interested in working within the community. Jump Start programs are set to begin the week of Aug. 2. Jeffco’s 2021-22 school year will begin Aug. 17.

Don’t Fall for ‘Title Lock’ Services. They Are a Waste of Money and Don’t Provide Much Protection. Perhaps you have seen advertisements or received a solicitation to purchase “title lock” service. A reader asked me to find out if it was a scam, so I asked my friends at First Integrity Title to check it out. Here’s what I learned. The premise of the service is that the company monitors your public property information. It is supposed to alert you to changes to your home title (similar to credit monitoring) but is not as helpful or as necessary. The truth is that it really isn’t as easy to steal your home’s title as they claim. Also, this is a monitoring service only. There is no “insurance” or help if your title is found to have changed, although Home Title Lock’s website does claim to provide a million dollars towards legal fees and costs to defend title from one of these scams. Doing so wouldn’t be terribly risky for the company, since the fraud is so rare and so easy to repair legally. The reason a scammer would pretend to own your home is to take out a loan against it, pocket the money and disappear. The best target for such fraud would be a home that is owned free and clear. Any lender would require the purchase of title insurance, so if the scammer were successful in fooling a title company to insure that loan, it would be the title company at risk, not you. Jerry Spaeth, a lawyer and CEO of First Integrity Title, reported that in 22 years of doing title work, he has never seen a case where someone has been able to “steal” tile and then take out a loan, as they claim. And for only $15 a month, which such services typically charge, it would be difficult to be anything more than a monitoring service.

It is difficult to find out how many such frauds have been committed, because they would be lumped together statistically with wire fraud and identity theft. The likelihood of needing this service is greater if you have several properties that you own, or if you own your home free and clear — and if you are elderly. The victim might not be able to receive the letters from the new mortgage company that a payment is late. Again, you aren’t going to be getting support from most title lock services. They are just letting you know if something has taken place. The title policy you received when you purchased your home does not provide protection for a fraud incident after the purchase of the policy. You can, however, monitor your property on assessment websites to verify that you are still the rightful owner. Every year you should be receiving valuation and tax notices from your county assessor and treasurer. If you don’t get such notices, contact the county to find out why. If you have a credit monitoring service, as Rita and I do, you would be notified if a new loan is taken out in your name, and a no-cost “credit freeze” with the three credit bureaus would stymie anyone seeking to obtain credit in your name. In conclusion, title lock service is not necessarily a scam, but it is questionable how useful the service is if there is little or no protection that comes with it. Remember: Google is your friend. I found some useful information by Googling “title lock protection,” including a September 2020 piece from Fox 5 Atlanta calling it a “Waste of Your Money.”

We and Our Truck Go the Extra Mile for Our Clients! Our clients have put a lot of miles on this box truck, saving them thousands of dollars on moving costs. They also get free moving boxes, packing paper and bubble wrap. They only pay for the gas used. The truck is also used twice a week by BGoldN to pick up food from Food Bank of the Rockies and by other non-profits, including Family Promise of Metro Denver and the Golden Chamber of Commerce. We also use it ourselves every couple weeks to take truckloads of polystyrene (aka “Styrofoam,” a brand name) to a reprocessing center in Aurora, keeping over 200 cubic yards of the material out of landfills every year. People from all over Jefferson County (and beyond) bring their block white polystyrene to the Styrofoam Corral behind our office.

The Real Estate Bidding Wars Are Not Abating This is my monthly update on the real estate bidding wars. This week I chose to analyze the closings that occurred last Thursday, June 10th, to see how the bidding wars have evolved over the past four weeks. The source for this monthly analysis is REcolorado.com, the Denver MLS. As I did in previous months, I limited my analysis to sales within a 15-mile radius of downtown Denver. I limited my search to homes, condos and townhouses that were on the MLS at least one day and not more than 6 days before going under contract. Those are the homes with bidding wars. I divided the results into homes which sold up to $500,000 and those that sold for more. On June 10th there were 40 closings up to $500,000, compared to 44 closings on May 13th. The median home sold for 6.2% over its asking price, compared to 8.7% on May 13th. The highest ratio this time was 19.6% for a condo in Golden compared to 15.7% on May 13th for a home in southwest Denver. Only one

listing sold for the asking price, and only two sold for less than listing price. There were 37 homes that closed on June 10th for more than $500,000, compared to 56 homes on May 13th. The median home in that group sold for 7.7% over its listing price, compared to 8.1% on May 13th. Only three sold for the listing price, and none sold for less than the listing price. The highest overbid in this group was 20.9% for a one-story home in Lakewood on June 10th compared to 29.4% on May 13th. To have a statistically significant number of closings over $1 million, I analyzed the 82 such closings over a longer period — June 1-13. The median closing for those high-end homes was 6.1% over listing price, compared to 6.0% in May. Four homes sold for the listing price and 9 homes sold for less than the listing price. The highest overbid was for a 1979 ranch-style home in Jeffco’s Sixth Avenue West subdivision, which was listed at $1,080,000 and sold in 6 days for $1,575,000, 45.8% over listing price.

For the 22nd year, the City of Arvada hosted its annual Kids Fishing Tournament on June 12, an event for children aged 14 and under to fish for prizes at the Arvada-Blunn Reservoir. This year’s event took place in an elongated timeslot lasting from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and was attended by over 300 kids throughout the day. The event was complete with a barbecue snack shack, weigh station, photo booth, and prize stand for the winners. The City of Arvada and the rangers service donated prizes ranging from bicycles to fishing rods. This year’s event was spread out throughout the day to accommodate for COVID-19 prompted social distancing, and winners were notified the next day and will receive their prizes at a later date. Emily Alba, who coordinated the event, said she was happy the kids got to have the photo booth to get immediate recognition and thanked the rangers service for helping put the event on. “It’s kind of a different set up,” said Alba, “but we get to applaud the kids and get a picture of them with their catch… I applaud all the Rangers running the reservoir and their commitment to making this event happen.” Alba said her team stocked 18,000 trout for the event to get the reservoir ready for the tournament so the kids would have something to catch.

people including LGBTQ+ people are created in God’s image.” AUMC Project Coordinator Katie Vigil said she felt the event was important to show the local LGBTQ+ community that they have a space where they’ll be accepted. “We are a proud progressive voice in Arvada,” said Vigil, “and our bishop (Dr. Amy Gearhart) identifies as a lesbian and she was installed in our church a few years ago — we are proud to have her come to our church and be here. We just want everyone to know they’re welcome.” June has been designated as Pride Month to honor the legacy of the Stonewall Riots, which began on June 28, 1969, in Greenwich Village, New York. The Riots are often cited as the catalyst of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Two protesters came to the event but stood on the opposite side of the street and did not interfere with the celebration. Titone said the event saw a positive move by a religious group, many of which have historically excluded members of the LGBTQ+ community. “I think it’s a real step in the right direction,” said Titone, “to take the initiative to show inclusion and welcome LGBTQ+ people into their congregation. It shows people that religion and being LGBTQ+ are not mutually exclusive; you can be both, and you should be welcomed into those places if you

are, and it just shows the intersection of what our beliefs are.” Vigil said that she was glad the event featured an informational booth hosted by a youth group due to the heightened occurrence of suicide and suicide attempts among LGBTQ+ youths. LGBTQ+ youth contemplate suicide at a rate of almost three times that of their heterosexual counterparts and are five times as likely to have attempted suicide compared to their peers who are not in the LGBTQ+ community, according to the Trevor Project, an LGBTQ+ youth advocacy group.

“Our family ministry director wants to be sure to include the youth group,” said Vigil, “so they always know they’re loved and accepted however they are, and for parents to know that as well and not be afraid to talk about it. “I think it’s a special event to have,” Vigil continued,” because of the high incidents of mental health issues and suicides of kids who are having enough problems with the COVID-19 pandemic and then may not feel supported. With this project, we just want them to know that they are, and they will be welcome here.”

Urgent: Slow down to control hurry sickness

o you count the cars in front of you and always move to the line that seems to go faster? Do you check out the items in grocery carts ahead of you and calculate which checkout lane will move faster? Do you chronically feel short on time and try to accomplish ALCHEMY every task faster, only to get irritated with any kind of delay? If so, then you – as I do – might have hurry sickness. Yes, hurry sickness is a real thing. However, hurry Andrea Doray sickness, sometimes called excessive time urgency, is not disorder or a diagnosis, and it’s not an actual medical or mental health condition. But it is a compulsion I often have trouble managing. By definition, hurry sickness is “a

I receive the Wall Street Journal and my neighbor the Denver Post. After reading them we exchange papers, and also give a paper to an elderly neighbor (just a bit older than I am) who can’t afford a paper but likes to read them. The other day my wife was talking to some of her friends at the gym and mentioned something about “Cancel Culture” to them, and they had no idea what it was. This is possibly a failure to get information from more than one source, and in some cases any source, perhaps they cannot afford a paper. Newspapers are expensive, so why not share them as you would books, and allow current information to reach more readers? As we live in a townhouse we do not get the Arvada Press delivered, so I pick up copies at the YMCA from the paper box and hand them out to my neighbors; who appear quite pleased to receive them. zones, so allowing for time between bolting out of bed and booting up the computer sounds like a better way to start the morning. Practice mindfulness, even if it’s just a few breaths to help me focus on what’s going on in the moment, such as navigating the interstate, participating in a conference call, or simply watering my flowers. Embrace self-care … sleep, hydration, nutrition, relaxation and exercise. All I can say here is that I’m trying. But perhaps the most important remedy for the pressure and angst of my hurry sickness to make sure my friendships and relationships a priority. I am most nourished when I connect with the people I love and admire, and I’ve missed you.

In fact, I have an actual list called “things to do while doing something else.” This might look like playing solitaire on my phone while eating lunch or sorting and deleting photos while binge-watching episodes of “House.” There’s no telling what I’ll squeeze in while waiting on something in microwave! I’ve been driven by extreme time urgency for most of my adult life … I feel perpetually behind schedule, and there never seem to be enough hours in a day to accomplish what I need to do. Often, no matter how much I do get done, I feel as though as I’m playing catch-up. Fortunately, there’s lots (and lots) of advice for getting hurry sickness – and its resultant anxiety — under control. I’ve selected a few here that I’m going to work on: Wake up with enough time to enjoy a cup a coffee before I start work. I log on in the early a.m. to connect with colleagues across multiple time

behavior pattern characterized by continual rushing and anxiousness and an overwhelming, persistent sense of urgency – even when there’s no need to be moving so fast.” I experience hurry sickness in pretty much every aspect of my life. At work, hurry sickness takes the form of multi-tasking, which is probably doing more harm than good. Stanford University research found that people who are “regularly bombarded with several streams of electronic information cannot pay attention, recall information, or switch from one job to another as well as those who complete one task at a time.” Hmmm … I often have trouble differentiating between when the urgency is real – such as getting to the airport to catch a flight – and when it isn’t. Even small, everyday things such as shopping, eating or (especially) driving feel like a race to me. And sometimes, focusing on just

When MVP stands for most variable player

o, Denver has an NBA Most Valuable Player this year. Our first in the history of the franchise in the NBA, and the first professional HITTING MVP for the city in a HOME … while. Anybody remember a guy named Manning? What’s amazing to me is how different Nikola Jokic looks than any of the recent NBA MVPs. And, no, I’m Michael Alcorn not talking even a little bit about the color of his skin. What I mean is, if you watch Jokic, he does not come across as, what you would say, an athlete. Well, other than the size— 6-foot, 11 inches. Other than that, he plays slow, his vertical jump can be measured in sheets of paper, and he has the physique of a centralcasting back yard dad. Thing is, he’s different. He would rather, I think, make a great pass to get one of his teammates a basket than make the basket himself. I’ve seen him make five or six different moves to get himself free for one shot (as the kids say, “putting his defender in a blender”). Rather than throwing the ball down in a thunderous slam dunk, he tends to float it gently through the air,

barely making the net move. But it works. For him. Nikola Jokic is the NBA MVP precisely *because* he does things differently than the other guys around him. I think it’s obvious to see that the Joker did not learn how to play basketball in America as a kid. You look at all the guys who play little defense, rely on speed and athleticism to create only for themselves, and then jack up long-range shots as the clock is expiring, and you see the pervasive influence of A.A.U. basketball— youth club basketball, whose only purpose is to showcase young talent to get them their one year of college exposure to get them their high draft pick. All without knowing how to play the game (ahem cough cough Michael Porter, Jr., cough cough). Jokic knows how to play the game, and it’s no coincidence that the player that almost single-handedly eliminated the Joker from the playoffs was a 36-year old “old timer” (Chris Paul) who slayed the Nuggets with a thousand 12-foot jump shots. If you look at the baseball standings right now, there is another team out there finding ways to win without, perhaps, the top-tier talent and certainly without following the “formula” everybody else uses. No, I only wish the Rockies were this clever. Right now, the Chicago White

Sox are in first place in their division. And, granted, the Sox pitch extremely well, but they are winning with a different formula. They are the third-highest scoring team in baseball … while being in the bottom third of the league in home runs hit. They are one of only six teams in all of baseball that have a batting average higher than .250 (which, by older standards, is a pathetic team BA), but their team strikeout numbers are in the bottom half of the league. In other words, the Sox pitch well, and they put the ball in play at the plate without necessarily hitting it a mile, and they play good defense (very few unearned runs against). It’s not what everybody else is trying to do: strike people out, only swing for the fences, and don’t care a lot about defense. And, when the whole world is trying to pump out cookie-cutter versions of everybody else, being different works. You can do that, too, in the real world. Think about all the people at your job/in your industry that do things exactly the same way. Now, sometimes that’s just because that’s what works; but sometimes it’s because “that’s how we’ve always done it.” Thing is, if you do things the same as everybody else,

So, I’ve been here a very long time now. I was in New York in the Hudson Valley area working as a geologist for a small company based out of Pennsylvania. I was the last one hired,

and they didn’t want to grow, so I knew that I was going to keep doing low level work. At that time, I had two bachelors and a master’s degree and a little bit of ambition, so I didn’t want to stick around being the low person on the totem pole — I wanted to do something else. I decided I was either going to go back to school or find a job. I was accepted to Tulane to get my PhD and found a job working for a mining consulting company here in Denver. It was a very difficult decision for me to turn down a full scholarship at Tulane to get a PhD, but I decided I wanted to come out here to be in the mountains instead of being under water. And that’s kind of how I ended up here. I like Arvada because it’s central to a lot of cool stuff. It has its own cool stuff and then you’ve got Golden, Boulder, Denver, and it’s kind of central to everything. What led you to get involved in politics? I was a volunteer firefighter when I was 16 and really got into that; taking all the different classes and learning all the different skills to be really good at my work as a vol-

unteer in that respect. When I was going to school, 9/11 happened and it was very impactful. Being close to New York City, having a lot of friends that had families that worked and lived there and seeing a lot of firefighters lose their lives in that event was impactful to me as well. I had a couple of opportunities to join the military out of high school — they wanted me to do nuclear physics — but I had a secret life that I kept from a lot of people. As much as I didn’t get to be myself that often, I could do it at home and in my private space, and when you’re in the military you don’t have a private space. But I really wanted to serve my community, I wanted to help people. I had to figure out what to do next. And one of the things I realized was that I was sacrificing a lot of my own happiness and my own well-being thinking about everything that I wanted to do for everybody else. That’s when I started to get some therapy and look into all of this stuff that I was hiding from everyone, being a closeted trans person. And once I finally got the courage

It seems mental health illnesses are being talked about more and young adults are stepping up to change the narrative. And as somebody who wanted to help people and prevent people from being hurt and from being attacked, this was right up my alley. So, I just became an activist. As an activist, I went down to the Capitol and tried to educate people on different topics and showed up to rallies and was present in a lot of different ways that I never was before because I had a lot of privilege. I didn’t need to fight for anything for myself, but as someone who has not lost a lot of my privilege, I was going to stand up for other people. Through that activism, someone asked me to run for office. At the time, a trans person hadn’t won any election really to that point, but when Danica Roem won her race in 2017, along with Andrea Jenkins and Lee Cunningham, they broke the glass ceiling and it said, ‘it doesn’t matter what your gender

EMILIO E. (LEE) FIORINO 1/18/1925 - 5/22/2021

Lee lived a long, healthful, prolific and vibrant life until his passing on May 22, 2021 at age 96. Born of Italian immigrants Emilio Fiorino and Ernestina Tessitore Fiorino in Little Italy, New York City on January 18, 1925, he served with the 204th Combat Engineers in Europe during WWII. After the war, he met the Love of his life, M. Madeleine Turgeon, and married her on September 24, 1949. As a young draftsman, he was selected to draw up safety upgrades for the Empire State Building’s observation deck. Recruited by renowned Denver architect Temple Buell, he moved in 1955 from NYC to Colorado to realize his ambition of becoming a prominent architect himself, and to raise a family in the wide open spaces of the West. In 1965 he designed and built a custom home for his fast growing family near Parker, CO. His several architectural design creations include Denver’s Tiffany Plaza. He retired to Tucson AZ, fulfilling a lifelong dream of living in the desert. There he continued his passion for photography and watercolor painting,

receiving several local and national awards for his work. His deep, abiding love and appreciation of music was a hallmark of his life and inspired the same within each of his children. A man of impeccable integrity, he was dearly loved by many and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Madeleine, their 5 children, Robert, Paul, Michelle, John, and Ted, 11 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. ardening is a challenge, yet it is such a satisfying pastime. “Gardening is one giant experiment. But that’s part of the fun of it,” said Keri Luster, manager of Plum Creek Garden Market’s Denver location. “There will be failures and OK, because you’ll learn from those. The key is just to have fun.” During Plum Creek’s off-season, Luster serves as a gardening consultant. “I really like helping people make the world a beautiful place,” Luster said. But not only that, Luster added, “gardening can help you grow as a person. It’s the pride of creating something.” Luster grew up in the gardening industry. Her father owned Groundcovers, which operated for about 40 years in the north University Hills neighborhood. Luster started going to work with her father when she was 12. In 2019, the city of Denver purchased the Groundcovers property and will eventually turn it into a public neighborhood park, Luster said. Gardening can provide you with something to be proud of, Luster said. “It’s hard work, but at the end of the day, you will be satisfied with what you did,” she added. All five of Plum Creek Garden Market’s seasonal pop-up markets opened on late April and are open seven days a week through June. Plum Creek Denver is located at 2150 S. Monaco Pkwy., which is in north Goldsmith. The markets boast more than 700

varieties of plants including perennials, annuals, vegetables, some fruits, herbs and some shrubs; as well as plants in hanging baskets; some accessories such as pots; and bagged goods such as soils, compost and fertilizers. “There were a lot of new gardeners starting to get into it last year because everyone was stuck at home,” said Matt Niemann, who oversees the operations of all five Plum Creek Garden Markets. “People wanted to make their home as beautiful as possible.”

An industry goal this year, Niemann added, is to keep all those new gardeners interested in their new-found passion. “And one way to do that is to them be successful,” Niemann said. There’s always something new to learn — whether beginner or expert — and the more time a person spends around plants, the more knowledge that person will absorb, Niemann said. SEE GARDENING, P13

Building a history of architecture in Denver COMING ATTRACTIONS

ne of my favorite things about a city is the symphony of architectural and design styles that go into making it a vibrant and dynamic place to spend time. And History Colorado’s latest exhibit, “Building Denver: Visions of the Capital City,” takes people behind the scenes of the histories and meaning behind the Mile High City’s built environment. “We’ve been working on this exhibit for two years, and we want it to share the vision and stories of the architecture,” said Anna Mascorella, exhibit curator with History Colorado. “We’re looking for key moments that transform the city, including the many works of fantastic local architects and nationally-known architects.” Building Denver is on display at the History Colorado Center, 1200 Broadway in Denver, through Aug. 31, 2022. Numer-

ous events are being held during the next year-and-a-half as well as connected exhibits like Black in Denver, Five Points Plus: Neighborhood Memory Project and Brick and Soul. There will also be guided tours and treks for people who want a more boots-on-the-ground look at the city’s styles through Saturday, June 26. According to provided information, the exhibit uses its 3,000 square feet to examine the city from 1860 to modern times and centers on how the capital has changed during those last more than 150 years. Divvied up into five sections (a new city, a beautiful city, a contested city, a great city and a resilient city), it makes use of 2-D artifacts like maps and photos, as well as items like architectural models and drafting tools and historic pieces like an original light post from I.M. Pei’s 16th Street Mall.

“The enjoyment of gardening is in our human nature,” Niemann said. “There is enjoyment in planting something, caring for it and watching it grow.” People love color, so flowers tend to be popular for gardeners, and others enjoy plants that yield something they can eat, such as herbs or vegetables, Niemann said. Every situation is different, he added, but there is always a solution to any problem someone might be having in their gardening endeavor. It’s helpful for many people to visit a gardening center and talk with the experts who can provide all sorts of advice and knowledge, Niemann said. Coupar Lester of Denver’s Cory-Merrill neighborhood has been gardening as a homeowner for about 20 years but starting helping his grandmother with her garden when he was a teenager. Lester finds gardening therapeutic and relaxing, and enjoys flowers because of the color they add to his yard. But he and his wife enjoy cooking, and especially so with fresh ingredients, so Lester’s garden includes a variety of vegetables ranging from tomatoes and cucumbers to squash and peppers, as well as an assortment of herbs such as rosemary, basil, thyme and cilantro. The Lesters even have a peach tree they can harvest. “Gardening will give you a creative outlet to do something outdoors,” Lester said. After all, he added, “Colorado has a lot of wonderful days to be spent outside.”

identity is, if you have the heard and qualifications to do the work, people can take you seriously.’ And that’s how I ended up deciding that I would run. How did you navigate being an LBGTQ+ trailblazer and also an advocate for all constituents? I had to put my best foot forward and not make it about being trans. It’s about doing the work of the people, and that’s what I demonstrated and showed people. I’m not just doing this work because I want to be a trans person breaking these barriers, it’s about doing the work and doing it better than I’ve seen it done in this area because people deserve to have someone here doing the work at a high level. I always say that I have to wear two hats and have two different jobs. One of my jobs is to be the

What strides does Colorado still need to make in terms of LGBTQ+ issues? There are a bunch of different things that are still not quite complete yet. Marriage licenses are one thing. I was looking on running a bill on that to help trans people who are married before they come out as being trans and have a name change to be able to update their marriage license instead of having a new one. The thing about a lot of these issues is that it doesn’t affect a lot of people, so it’s not really high priority bills that we’re looking at. I try to do that as a late bill, I’ll probably work on that maybe next year. In terms of health care, we have OK health care. Medicaid is pretty good for trans people, they can get a lot of the things there want, but there’s still a few things that aren’t

covered when it comes to healthcare. There are issues about adding mandates to coverage. That’s a federal issue that we’re actually looking at with one of my bills right now which is House Bill 1068, which is the mental health wellness exam and having a new mandate on health care can cause the state to be fined by the federal government. That becomes a problem if you’re trying to give coverage to people that didn’t have it before, mandating insurance companies to provide those services, you can run into this problem where the federal government can fine us. The one thing we really need to change, and I’m going to be talking to a lot of the folks who do trans care in Colorado, is about increasing the number of doctors who can actually treat trans people, because there’s not a lot of people who really know how to care for trans people and their specific needs and there’s a lot of people on wait lists to try and see doctors.

Many others feel the same way I do. zens of Arvada should be deciding such “hot-button” issues. “I think this should be referred to the citizens of Arvada,” said Williams, “just like I said the trash hauling should have been referred to the citizens of Arvada. My `no’ vote is not an indication that I wanted to see this approved, I would have preferred to see this referred to the citizens” The Ralston Valley Coalition’s legal counsel James Silvestro argued that going forward with the Project Indiana proposal would have been

detrimental to the western Arvada community. “This is not a NIMBY (Not in my backyard) group,” said Silvestro. “The city is squandering their opportunity to make this land a crown jewel of the community … this is not the right site for light industrial use. “ After denying the annexation ordinance, Council also voted 6-1 to deny a rezoning ordinance for the Project Indiana land to be designated for light industrial, with Miller being the lone dissenting vote.

EJ Mapps goes over the ground rules with the umpires and Mountain Range coach D.J. Yeager before both teams’ season finale June 10. Yeager was actually on Pomona’s 2003 state baseball championship team that Mapps coached.

ARVADA — EJ Mapps coached his final game Thursday, June 10, on the baseball field that bares his late father’s name — Bart Mapps Field. After 32 years at Pomona High School — 28 years as the head baseball coach — Mapps filled out his final line-up card, hit his last pregame infield and coached third base for the final time. “Four years ago I kind of had this in my mind with my son (Griffee Mapps) graduating that would be a good time to do it,” Mapps said of stepping down after this season. “I really wanted his last game to be my last game. I felt it was a good time to close this book and start a new chapter.” And what a book was written over the three decades at Pomona. Mapps finished with 288 victories to go along with winning the Class 5A

state title in 2003 after state runnerup trophies in 1998 and 2000. “We just kept pushing and pushing and pushing,” Mapps said of the Panthers’ state runner-up runs in 1998 and 2000. “It was similar to what Jay Madden did in football here at Pomona. You have to get to the title game a couple of times and maybe lose before you figure how to push over and through to get the title.” Pomona edged Regis Jesuit 2-1 in the winner-take-all championship game at All-City Field in Denver back in May 2003. “We’ve had a million great teams. That 2003 team has to be the best ever,” Mapps said. “Just fantastic memories, great ball players and great people that I’m still friends with.” While the wins and heated rivalries with the likes of Arvada and SEE MAPPS, P22

WHEAT RIDGE — Eight new members of Jeffco Public Schools’ Athletic Hall of Fame were inducted on Wednesday, June 9, at The Vista at Applewood. Due to COVID, the Class of 2020 and 2021 were both honored since a ceremony wasn’t held last year. The exclusive group of now 116 members began with the charter group back in 1986. Here are this newest members of the Jeffco Athletics Hall of Fame. Class of 2020 Dave Rulli — Rulli worked for Jeffco Public Schools for 33 years. His final 15 years he worked in the ath-

letic department primary at Jeffco Stadium. He finished his career as the Manager of Stadium Operations overseeing the four central athletic stadiums. Rulli was instrumental in bring all-classifications of track and field of the now 3-day state meet held at Jeffco Stadium. Scott Smith — Smith is a Golden High School graduate who went on to play basketball at Western State University in the mid-1970s. He returned to Jeffco where he was a boys basketball coach at Alameda International High School from 1979-2007. Smith was the head boys basketball coach for the Pirates from 1991-2006. Arvada West back in the late1990s and early-2000s were legendary, it was the family aspect that Mapps brought every day to Pomona. In 2000 the baseball field was actually named after Bart Mapps, EJ’s father that had been there from Day 1. “Those were good times. A lot of people thought he was the coach before me,” Mapps said. “Right as I was about to start my career my Dad was retiring from Coors. What a great thing for him and I. He was able to come everyday. He did our scorebook. He worked on the field. He relaced kids’ gloves. The kids just fell in love with him because of the kind of person he was.” Bart Mapps passed away in 2013. Mapps will continue to teach physical education at Pomona next school year. He also plans on getting back into coaching sooner rather than later. “This is what I do. Coaching is in my blood. I can’t stop. I’m a terrible golfer,” Mapps admitted with a laugh. “I won’t be away for long. It will be hard for me to be away from the game for very long. I’m sure there will be some opportunities.” Mapps felt like it was

season next year. I feel like it’s a great time for the next person to take the reins and start off on the right foot. The cupboard, in my opinion, is still stocked.” Pomona had more than 70 students tryout for baseball this spring. “The school is a great place. The administration has been totally supportive

in everything we wanted to do,” said Mapps, who had Pomona’s principal Andy Geise and athletic director Mike Santarelli on hand Thursday for his final game. Santarelli spoke before Thursday’s game simply saying, “Coach Mapps did it the right way.” “I just appreciate all the players and their families.

Lisa LaGuardia — LaGuardia was one of the top girls basketball players in Jeffco in the early 1980s. She was First-Team All-State Colorado for three seasons while playing at Wheat Ridge High School where she scored over 1,000 points for the Farmers. She went on to play college hoops at the University of Nebraska. She returned to Jeffco in the early 1990s where she taught and coached basketball at Alameda and Golden high schools. LaGuardia is currently a teacher at Campbellsport High School in Wisconsin. Griff Wirth — Wirth is a Wheat Ridge High School graduate who was a football, basketball and baseball standout for the Farmers in the early 1980s. He was the

Gold Helmet award winner as Colorado’s most outstanding student-football player his senior year. Wirth was a teacher and coach in Jeffco before turning to Wheat Ridge High School as its principal in 2007. The Farmers had great athletic success during Wirth’s 10-year run at Wheat Ridge. The Farmers won 10 state titles and 24 league titles. He was honored as the CHSAA School Administrator of the Year in 2016 before his retirement. Class of 2021 Steve Greivel — Greivel was a fixture at Bear Creek High School for more than 50 years. He began his teaching and coaching at Bear Creek in 1967. He would retire from teaching in 1998, but would continue coaching until 2020. Greivel was the Jeffco boys track and field Coach of the Year in 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996 and 1999. While track was his

main coaching focus, he also was an assistant coach for wrestling, cross country and football, along with the head golf coach for a time at Bear Creek. Kami Keiter — Keiter was one of the best softball players ever to come out of Jeffco. The hard-throwing lefty pitched Arvada West High School to back-to-back Class 5A state titles in 1999 and 2000. She also played basketball and was on the track team during her time at Arvada West. Keiter went on to play softball at the University of Oklahoma from 2002 to 2005. She helped the Sooners to three consecutive trips to the College World Series and finished her career as one of the top pitchers in OU history. Dave Sanders — Sanders taught and coached basketball and softball at Columbine High School for nearly 25 years. He died during the tragic shooting at Columbine

Blayne Van Dyke — Van Dyke has become a fixture during Friday Night Lights at Jeffco Stadium for more than 40 years. He has been a member of the chain crew

primarily at Jeffco Stadium since the 1980s. Van Dyke was inducted into the Colorado Football Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2013 to recognize his longtime service to high school athletics.
